A helping hand; what’s the big idea? We live in interesting and at points disappointing times. Although we are seemingly more materially wealthy than ever we often see visible and invisible homelessness and breaks in society. So how can we all help? Welcome to the Fine & Country Foundation. The Fine & Country Foundation has been created to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness. Last year, the Government estimated around 2,414 people sleep on the street on any one night across England, a rise of 36% over three years. Often the reasons for homelessness are misunderstood, with many blaming the individuals for poor life decisions and carelessness. The reality is: people become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons that cannot be avoided, such as family breakdowns, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness does not only involve putting a roof over people’s heads, it is also trying to tackle the root of the problem and asking the question: why did they became homeless in the first place? The Fine & Country Foundation is dedicated to bringing together all Fine & Country agents in over 300 locations worldwide to raise awareness of the causes of homelessness whilst supporting homeless charities. Contact us at foundation@fineandcountry.com or call us on 020 3368 8221 for further information.

Cheam School & The Royal Connection By Local Resident, Brent Stevens The recent news that the Duke of Edinburgh is to step down from many of his public duties later this year was recognised in a television programme that traced his life and achievements, presented by Alan Titchmarsh. When talking about his education, the fact he went to Gordonstoun is well documented but prior to that he mentioned that he was at Cheam School. My curiosity was aroused: where in Cheam was this school and where is it now? The exact date of the school’s opening is not clear but records indicate that a school was in Cheam in 1645, with the Reverend George Aldwich as Headmaster. He lived in a pre-reformation house, now known as Whitehall. Although boarders must have stayed in the house, lessons were taken in an underground vault in the back garden. This rather bizarre venue had been used for secret religious meetings by Protestants and Catholics – which one depended on the current monarch’s religious disposition. By 1670, a larger building was needed and West Cheam House was acquired. This stood on the site where Cheam library now stands (and was destroyed in the late eighteenth century). Before that happened, the fifth Headmaster of the school, Dr. Daniel Sanxay, supervised the construction of a purpose built school in Cheam High Street which opened in 1719. The site of this school which was demolished after 215 years is where the block of flats, called Tabor Court, now stands. The school claimed to be one of the oldest private schools in Surrey. Its numbers were originally boosted in 1665, when many families vacated London to avoid the plague. This gave the impetus to construct a new school. However, by 1752, the School was in trouble with just 15 boys on the roll. Fees at this time were £25 a year for tuition and board, while each pupil had various other bills including 6 shillings a year for coal! After a re-organisation and under the guidance of one of the School’s great Headmasters, William Gilpin, Cheam School revived. Gilpin was an enlightened educationalist, who brought in alternative admonishments other than corporal punishment. He believed in “uprightness and utility”. With him at the helm, numbers rose and the School began to earn a good reputation for getting boys into top schools at 13, as well as entrance to university for the older ones. By 1856, numbers had fallen again and the new Headmaster, Robert Tabor, made a key decision which probably saved the School: he decided to turn the Institution into a prep school, and stop taking boys over the age of 13. This coincided with the founding of several senior schools to which he could send boys. Between 1844 and 1965 the following schools were set up: Cheltenham, Marlborough, Rossall, Brighton, Radley, Bradfield, Epsom, St. John’s, Wellington, Haileybury and St. Edward’s, to mention just a few. This was a big market that Cheam School could supply. By 1864, numbers were up again to over 100 pupils.

Aug Sept Magazine 2017 Mag .indd 30-31

A study of the archives at this time see one or two interesting things emerge. With boys as young as seven boarding, it was inevitable that there was a lot of “homesickness”. During that time domestic staff working in the School, recalled having to ensure each evening that the “right” teddy bear was in the right bed! It is easy to imagine the upset if they got it wrong. Pupils were also billed at the end of term for the amount of alcohol they consumed, which included port, sherry and claret. Some of these were prescribed on medical advice, but not all of them! Many boarders at this time had beer with their meals, rather than water, because the local water supply was potentially contaminated. Boys were also billed for the repair of hot water bottles and convalescence trips to Worthing, Hastings and Eastbourne, presumably to recover from an illness whilst at school. At its heart, the school had a strong religious foundation, with Christian principles playing a central part in the daily lives of the boys. Until 1890, all Headmasters were Church of England clergymen. Before the school built its own chapel, the boys went to services at St. Dunstan’s. At that time, to guarantee a seat in church, a small payment was required, and the school charged parents 10 shillings when their son entered the school to guarantee an allocated place in a pew. The school had set aside one of the galleries that were in the old church, which stood to the south of the current one. In 1862 a new church replaced the medieval one, which was demolished. The only reminder of that time is the Lumley chapel, built as a mausoleum for Lord Lumley and his two wives. (It is believed that the actress Joanna Lumley) is related to the Lord. In response to this development, Cheam School, inspired by Robert Tabor, had their own chapel built by 1867. It was considered to be one of the finest private chapels in Surrey. The school continued to flourish until local planners intervened in the 1930’s. The decision to expand the High Street that lead into Cheam, meant the school lost land at the front of its site. In 1934, the Governors took the decision to move to Beenham Court in Headley near Newbury. The new building was bought for £18,000. The Headmaster at this time, the Reverend Harold Taylor, tried to raise money from alumni and friends of the school to have the chapel moved to Newbury. Alas for him, not enough money was promised and in 1937, Father Rhead, the catholic priest in Sutton gained permission to buy the chapel. The Cheam school chapel was thus acquired by for St. Christopher’s which has built out in front of the original structure but it can be seen clearly when taking a stroll down Dallas Road. As for the school now – it is doing well. In 1992 day boys were admitted and two years later a local girls school, Hawtrys, amalgamated with Cheam school and it is now a fully co=educational prep school with flexi boarding, boasting over 400 pupils. It has come a long way from 15 boys in 1752! Finally, back to my starting point, Prince Philip was a pupil at Cheam from 1928 to 1933.He left aged 12 to go to a school in Germany owned by a member of his family because it was cheaper. However, it coincided with Adolf Hitler coming to power and Philip was wisely brought back to Britain to continue his education at Gordonstoun. His son Prince Charles was also a pupil, but that was of course after the move to Newbury. Peter Beck, Headmaster 1947 -1963, apparently had to cane Prince Charles twice; the reasons are not recorded! Other famous old boys include Winston Churchill’s father, Randolph and the British Prime Minister from 1801-1804, Henry Addington, who had the distinction of agreeing a Peace Treaty with Napoleon in 1802 (Treaty of Amiens). However it is a sobering thought that for seven decades the Queen’s Consort, was educated in Cheam in his formative years. I think that this should be acknowledged in some way.

WORK OUT WITH LYNDA AND REACH YOUR GOALS! Want to lose weight, get fit and, as a result, increase your energy levels and look great? That’s a ‘big ask’ if you undertake it by yourself, but if you join forces with people who have similar goals, it’s very much easier. Even if you are blessed with amazing self-discipline, there inevitably comes a time in your diet when, tempted by chocolate, cream cakes or a glass of wine, you ‘fall off the wagon’ and wonder whether it’s worth climbing back up. That’s when professional help, such as that offered at Lynda Loakes’s WOW diet and fitness classes, is invaluable. Lynda has been a health and fitness instructor for the past 22 years and she understands, from her own personal experience, that the battle is hard but the final result is well worth the effort. WOW (Work Out With) Lynda classes are held at various venues throughout the week and, in addition to providing helpful advice on dieting to lose weight, Lynda also offers a variety of exercises to improve fitness and tone muscles. Easy-to-follow recipes There’s no need to be put off by the term ‘diet’. Lynda does not expect you to exist on a couple of lettuce leaves! She advocates ‘eating clean’ and her menus involve cooking from scratch, using ingredients that provide just the right balance to keep the body healthy and fit whilst, hopefully, shedding a few pounds. Lynda’s recipes are simple and easy-to-follow and class members are offered new ones each week which might be for breakfast, lunch or dinner. In this way class members can build up their own collection of recipes which they can refer to time and time again. Realising that we all lead very busy lives, Lynda’s recipes involve very little preparation and cooking time, yet the resulting dishes are delicious! Balance healthy eating with exercise Fully trained in all aspects of nutrition, Lynda helps class members to achieve their individual goals in a friendly and caring way. But diet and food choices are only part of the story. Lynda aims to balance diet with exercise to

achieve each individual’s weight and fitness goals. All of Lynda’s classes start with a private, one-to-one weigh-in, followed by a group motivational talk. The rest of the class time is devoted to exercises and these cater for all ages and abilities. If anyone has physical difficulties that prevent them from carrying out certain exercises, Lynda can always find suitable alternatives. Her exercise sessions include high intensity fat-burning, muscle strengthening and overall posture and fitness improvement. Lynda also runs one-hour-long fitness Pilates courses. Pilates exercises are not strenuous and are suitable for all age groups and fitness abilities. They aim to enhance flexibility, build strength and develop a strong body core which improves balance and co-ordination. The fun element There’s one other aspect of Lynda’s classes that must be mentioned – the fun element. Lynda has a fantastic sense of humour and her classes are interspersed with fun and laughter. Those attending regularly build friendships with other class members and such friendships are encouraged and supported by Lynda’s twice-yearly parties and other social activities – all with proceeds being donated to local charities. So, why not go along to one of the Work Out With Lynda classes. You can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome from Lynda and her class members. Like them, you’ll be exclaiming ‘WOW’ when your scales and mirror show some really positive results. Lynda’s contact details are on the back of this leaflet. She offers your first class free, so you have nothing to lose. Class times and venues are:Monday – Fitness Pilates courses. 09.30-10.30am – Highfield Hall, 20 Carshalton Road, Carshalton SM5 3QB; and 18.00-19.00pm at Banstead Day Centre, The Horseshoe, Banstead SM7 2BQ.
