A Short History
B ENFLEET
HALL
By local resident, Brent Stevens
Benhill, in North Sutton, is dominated by the Church of All Saints, constructed in 1863. 1 Once built, it soon attracted wealthy families and by the 1870’s, twenty nine residences had been constructed. One grand villa was called Benhill House, although it was later re-named Benfleet Hall. Built on high land, it commanded great views of the surrounding area. Thomas Alcock, who owned the land, had sold it to developers and Benfleet Hall was bought by Mr E. Rabbits. Edward Rabbits (1818-1874) came Benfleet Hall in 1918 from Somerset and moved to Newington in London and established himself as a shoe maker and repairer. He was quite religious but, tired of the formality of the Wesleyan Church, he became an Evangelical. While attending church, in 1850 he met and became friends with William Booth who went on to found the Salvation Army. Rabbits gave financial support to Booth that enabled him to devote his energy to the newly founded movement. By 1851, Rabbits business was booming. Rabbits employed over 175 people in his factory and had several retail outlets by 1856. In 1861 Rabbits liked to proclaim that his shoe factory was one of the largest in the world. The warehouse that stored the shoes made in the factory employed another 400 people. His sons took over the business on Edward’s death and eventually it was sold to a rival, Freeman, Hardy and Willis, in 1903. In 1890 the house was bought by William Appleton, who lived there with his wife Charlotte and his third son, Herbert, who was making a name for himself as an architect. After William’s death, it was decided to rent the house, and during 2this time there was a serious fire. Over the next few months the house was gradually restored but on completion it was no longer a family home. The Great War was in its second year, casualty lists were mounting and as a result many large properties were requisitioned by the state to act as hospitals, or more Kitchener Ward likely as a convalescence home.

Benfleet Hall opened its doors as a home for soldiers to recover from their wounds in June 1915. The British Red Cross took responsibility for much of this. They set up the so called “auxiliary” hospitals, where the wounded soldiers, having been treated in established hospitals, were transferred to recuperate. These auxiliary sites were run by one person, supported by a Quartermaster, who obtained all the supplies needed, and matrons who looked after Benfleet Hall damaged by fire the patients. However what made these hospitals work was the number of volunteers, who operated under the banner “Voluntary Aid Detachment” or “VAD’s”. They were either too old or too young to work as a nurse in the military hospitals but were happy to contribute unpaid. Local GP’s also gave their time and expertise. At Benfleet Hall, Dr. Hooper was in charge, helped by two matrons. When it opened 72 patients were accommodated and the local population volunteered to help in large numbers. Apart from the treatment, the extensive grounds were used for playing croquet and bowls. Throughout the UK there were some 3000 of these hospitals. At Benfleet, photos show men in “Kitchener” Ward, most of whom had received the “blighty one” – a 4 wound that would see the soldier discharged from the army. This often involved an
3
amputation or damage to the lungs as a result of a gas attack. Those less seriously injured were housed in “Haig” Ward. The ending of the war saw the house change its function and Miss H. Griffiths rented the property and set up a “Marie Souvestre” School for Girls. Born in France in 1830, Marie made it her mission to educate girls. She set up establishments and the one in Wimbledon most famously had Eleanor Roosevelt as a pupil. Although Marie
Marie Souvestre
died in 1905, her vision lived on but sadly the school did not last long and moved to Europe. The house lay empty for a few years and in the mid 1930’s it was demolished and new houses built in the area between Bexhill Wood Road and Benhill Road, which was the original site of the house. Large houses became more difficult to maintain with each demand of Death Duties. Like so many other houses, Benfleet Hall adapted itself to a variety of functions but in the end succumbed to the demand for smaller houses for a rapidly increasing population. My thanks to Sutton Library Archive Centre for some of these photos. A special thank you to Abby Matthews who found the relevant pictures helped me select which ones to use. GET THAT ‘WOW’ FACTOR! REPAIRING THE DAMAGE Christmas and New Year are joyous times when we can relax and enjoy the company of family and friends in a convivial atmosphere. But we all know that there is a downside – far too much eating and drinking with little thought of how fattening or unhealthy those special Christmas meals and treats can be. However, it’s a New Year and time for a new start. There’s no point in beating yourself up over the food and drink follies you committed in December – just regard them as a pleasant memory. Now’s the time to commit the rest of the coming year to looking after yourself with a diet and exercise regime that will have you looking good and feeling fit. This is traditionally the time when we think about summer holidays. How will you look in your swimsuit? Act now and deal with any unsightly bulges. Having resolved to start a diet, shed pounds and gain fitness you’ll probably discover how difficult this can be, especially if you are still preparing ‘normal meals’ for the rest of your family. That’s why you need the help of a professional – and you’re fortunate to have a nutrition and fitness expert in this local area. Lynda Loakes has some 25 years’ experience in running classes and has helped thousands of her class members to achieve their goals of losing weight and, just as importantly, improving fitness. Lynda’s classes are called WOW, not only because they are an amazing experience but also because the letters stand for Work Out With Lynda. When it comes to diet, Lynda advocates sensible eating which, once learned, will become a lifelong habit, not a ‘once every so often’ attempt at a quick fix. Lynda encourages ‘eating clean’ and all her menus involve cooking from scratch, using ingredients that provide just the right balance to keep the body healthy and fit. Don’t be put off, though, if your skills in the kitchen leave a little to be desired! Lynda’s recipes are simple and easy to follow, and time spent in preparation and cooking is kept to a minimum – and the ingredients are readily available and inexpensive. Even better, the meals taste superb! Lynda is very aware of the challenges that losing weight presents. She has been there herself so is keen to offer plenty of support to others. Fully trained in all aspects of nutrition, she helps class members to achieve their goals in a friendly and caring way. Each class starts with a private, one-to-one weigh-in, followed by a motivational talk. The exercises that follow cater for all ages and abilities and include high intensity fat-burning, muscle strengthening and overall posture and fitness

improvement. Each week’s class is different, and Lynda has a wonderful sense of humour which creates plenty of fun and laughter. She encourages friendships that are built up in her classes with the camaraderie of mutual support from others aiming for similar goals. Lynda also arranges various social activities – parties and dances and she and her class members actively support local charities. Fitness-pilates courses are also offered by this very busy lady. Pilates exercises are not strenuous and are suitable for all age groups and fitness abilities. They aim to enhance flexibility, build strength and develop a strong body core which improves balance and co-ordination. The classes run for an hour and are arranged as four-week courses and must be booked in advance. If you are serious about improving your looks and fitness in the coming year, why not go along to one of the Work Out With Lynda diet and fitness classes or enrol on one of her fitness pilates courses. You’ll be sure of a warm welcome from Lynda and her very friendly class members. Lynda’s website address is www.wowlynda.co.uk Class times and venues are as follows:Monday – Fitness pilates courses 9.30 -10.30 a.m. – Highfield Hall, 320 Carshalton Road, Carshalton SM5 3QB; and 6-7 p.m. at Banstead Day Centre, The Horseshoe, Banstead SM7 2BQ. These courses run for four weeks and must be booked in advance. Tuesday – Diet and fitness classes 6.00-7.30 p.m. and 7.30 to 9.00 p.m. – Banstead Day Centre, The Horseshoe, Banstead SM7 2BQ. The areas we at your local Fine & Country are privileged to deal with contain a wealth of history with properties dating back many hundreds of years, some being Grade II Listed. Cheam itself has an interesting past and has several Listed buildings as well as the interesting “Hare Warren Wall” located in South Cheam, behind which in the 17th Century hares were bred before being released for hunting by the local landed gentry. Cheam should also not be mentioned without reference to the great park of Nonsuch where King Henry VIII built his magnificent palace, so named Nonsuch as there was to be None-Such found anywhere else in the land! Sadly the palace was demolished in the late 1600’s and so we will never know how the surrounding area would have grown if the building still existed. However, Nonsuch Mansion House was built in the original grounds around 1740 and stands to this date as a Grade II Listed building with beautiful gardens and a wonderful Artisan coffee shop. Further afield one finds Ewell and Epsom both of which have a rich historical background. The former is a quaint village set on the outskirts of Epsom and Cheam. Records reveal that there has been a church in the village since the 13th Century and this is likely to account for the wealth of historic and Listed homes within the town. The high street also has The Watch House which is said to date from 1777 and served the dual purpose of prison and “fire station”! Turning to Epsom, many will know of the town from the famous Epsom Derby which takes place annually on the downs. However, it may not be common knowledge that Epsom was once a renowned Spa town. Tradition has it that the spa was discovered by a villager in 1618 when he found a trickle of water in the hollow hoofprint of a cow which, after a bit of digging, turned out to be a well. Perplexed that his cows would not drink from the well he tried the waters himself and, on experiencing their mineral qualities, immediately set about promoting them as Epsom Salts! Although in theory our area would be classed as the suburbs, it must in no way be diminished to such a bland description. We are all lucky enough to live in a what we believe is a hidden gem of Surrey with plentiful parkland and abundant history.

Santa and his Elves will be bringing the Santa Sleigh to you again in December
Cheam and Sutton Rotary are delighted to announce that their Santa Sleigh will be running as usual in December, from December 1 – 24, Christmas Eve inclusive. It has been a roller-coaster ride for the Club to get the Sleigh this year. The old van used in the previous years had caused a lot of maintenance problems over the recent years so the Club had over time built up a reserve to replace the van and replace they did in September. The new van would be used as Santa’s Sleigh in December and the other 11 months of the year it would be used by the Banstead District Scouts. Rotary purchased a new van and together with the Scouts they were working towards getting it ready to be transformed into a Sleigh when alas, 12 days after it had been purchased it was stolen. This theft had put all the Club’s plans at risk. So, it is a great relief that Cheam and Sutton Rotary, having received the insurance payment were able to buy another van and will be able to have the Santa Sleigh parading our streets once more in December and bring its usual Christmas cheer to our neighbourhood. It will be the Santa Sleigh’s 54th year. It has been running since 1966. The Sleigh’s route plan will be announced soon, giving the dates and the street names to let the residents of Sutton, Cheam and Worcester Park know when the Sleigh will be visiting their street. Please follow the Sleigh on Facebook pages: Santa’s Sleigh - Cheam & Sutton Rotary and Cheam and Sutton Rotary. The announcements will be made from the Facebook pages and Twitter @CheamSanta.
For more information please contact Peter Bright: 07967 388987 Peter Bright is a Cheam and Sutton Rotary member who is the lead person for the Santa Sleigh.
