A STAR, SAUSAGES AND A SONGWRITER:
THREE MEN OF SUTTON By local resident, Brent Stevens
The title refers to three men with connections to Sutton. Firstly – the star is Noel Coward. He was born in Teddington in 1899 but he and his family were residents in Sutton from 1905 to 1908. It was a significant period as during those three years, he attended his first school, his younger brother was born and he gave his first public performance. The house the Cowards lived in was in Lenham Road. The house still survives although many made way for a car park. Noel’s father had moved to the area to take a job at Paynes, a piano manufacturer. When his brother Eric was born, Noel was not impressed. “He seemed to be bright red and singularly unattractive.” Though never close, Noel was devastated when his brother died in 1933. After a brief attendance at a local elementary school, Noel was sent to a girls school called St. Margarets, located in a large house in Worcester Road. It was a wealthy area with affluent family homes. The Coward’s maid Emma used to take Noel to School each day but Noel often walked out and went home by himself. The Headmistress, Miss Willington, found Noel a handful. On one occasion he is said to have bitten her on the arm, an incident he later acknowledged but “never regretted” However, it was Miss Willington who was the first person to recognise Noel’s talent beyond the immediate family. On 23 July 1907, Noel made his first public appearance in Sutton Public Hall (demolished in 1981). The event was the school Speech Day and young Noel sung two songs, accompanying himself on the piano. He received much applause, but did not understand why he, unlike others, did not receive a prize. He threw a tantrum and had to be taken home. Meanwhile, Paynes went bankrupt and Noel’s father moved his family to Battersea in 1908. In Worcester Road, where Noel went to school, lived another very famous family – the Walls. In 1780 Richard Wall had opened a butcher’s stall in St, James’ Market. In 1812 he gained a Royal Appointment to make pork goods for the Prince Regent. In 1817 his son, Thomas, was born and in 1834 they moved the business to Jermyn Street. By 1836, both Thomas’ parents had died. So at 19 he had to run the business and look after his 12 year old sister. Thomas’ first son Thomas Wall II was born in 1846. He and his younger brother continued to build the business up. In 1913, Thomas had the idea to start making ice cream to compensate for

lower meat sales in the summer months, The outbreak of war prevented this happening until 1922, by which time Thomas had sold his business to Macfisheries and retired. Thomas Wall II used his retirement to help local people improve their lives through education. By 1930, a trust he set up helped to finance over 200 students at university and he paid for the construction of the “Thomas Wall Centre” in Benhill Avenue, a building that enabled anyone to have the chance to educate themselves. It is still being used by the community today. Between 1897 and his death in 1930, Thomas Wall II lived in “Blyethwood” in Worcester Road. His house is no longer there, but the house he bought for his sister still stands and is now the local Registry Office. Finally, the songwriter who was born and lived in Sutton as a boy is Clark Datchler. Born in 1964, he found fame as the lead singer and songwriter in the mid 1980’s in a group called “Johnny Hates Jazz”. His father was a backing singer and saxophonist in the 1950’s and encouraged his son to play the piano, the flute and guitar from the age of seven. Clark went to school at Downsend and then St. Johns School in Leatherhead. Whilst at the latter, he felt the school looked down on his music, hence the name of his group. They stayed together for about three years and he wrote a string of hits, including “Shattered dreams”, “Turn back the Clock” and “Heart of Gold”. Although the group did reunite recently, Clark has spent most of his time in California writing and performing. In 2007 he released a successful album “Tomorrow” which expresses his concerns over the pollution of our planet. He wrote all the songs and played most of the instruments you hear. What links these three men apart from Sutton? Well my father-in-law is approaching 90 and for the past 80 years or so has eaten Wall’s sausages every night for supper: company shareholders should award him a medal. Noel Coward wrote some of our favourite plays, for example, “Blithe Spirit” (recently revived starring Angela Lansbury) and we shall never forget seeing “Private Lives” in London a few years ago starring Alan Rickman and Lyndsay Duncan – absolutely outstanding. Coward also starred and directed the Great War film “In which we serve” and of course his performance in the film the “Italian job” with Michael Caine lifted the whole film. Finally I had the pleasure of teaching Clark GCSE history where he achieved a good grade. I shall never forget him playing the theme from the “Deer Hunter” on his guitar in a house instrumental competition - a wonderful performance. I last saw him in 2007 when he paid a surprise visit to the school on Speech Day where he gave me a copy of “Tomorrow”. It is playing now while I write this article. Cold winter mornings, the threat of snow and political uncertainty BUT DO NOT DISPAIR …….. Although at the time of my writing this segment it is just over three weeks since the 25th December, Christmas Day feels a very long time ago and January is heading towards February. In usual English fashion, the weather is changeable ranging from unseasonably mild one minute to windy and raining next. In fact there was a small snow flurry this morning, however, sitting writing this now the sun is out and it feels quite Spring-like! Like the weather, the market can be unpredictable in the first few weeks of any year and with the current political uncertainty we would indeed need a crystal ball to know what the year will bring. However, historically, Cheam and its s urrounding areas doesn’t tend to suffer badly from adverse market conditions. This is in part, we believe, due to the prestigious schooling in the area and the excellent train links into Central London. So far this year we have already sold stc five £500k+ properties which we believe will snowball (forgive the pun) into the higher end market and we will see the £700k+ market starting to move by early Spring. I may have mentioned before the magic of what we call “The Daffodil Effect” – as soon as those first glorious yellow flowers appear, the market often reveals its first buds of promise At the end of the day, whatever the weather or climate, people will still move whether it be from necessity, downsizing, upsizing or simply for a change of scene

It’s the return of the Big Knit campaign and Age UK Sutton is calling on the knitting ninjas, purling pros and crochet connoisseurs of Sutton (and those just keen to have a go) to get wild about wool and join the Big Knit.
Saturday 16th February at 7.30pm Tickets £18
The Big Knit is a joint campaign between Age UK and innocent drinks to raise funds to help vulnerable older people. This year, Age UK Sutton has a target of 10,000 hats, and each hat they get raises funds to support vital services, like Information & Advice (which helped people more than 5500 times last year) and Befriending ( befrienders made more than 6000 visits to lonely older people last year) for older people in Sutton, as well as their families and friends. Age UK Sutton needs 10,000 hats by 31 July 2019. They already have more than 1000 tiny hats – but need lots more if they are to hit their target. So Sutton, it’s time to get knitting, crocheting and bobbling to help this local charity get to 10K! For hat patterns and more about the Big Knit, visit www.ageuksutton.org.uk, email comms@ageuksutton.org.uk or call 020 8915 2233
