Senior Snippets: Helping Families Cope Dementia. It’s the word that can strike fear and dread into the hearts of families. That’s because dementia often takes away the very things that people treasure most; their identity, their memories and their ability to communicate with their family. Dementia affects over 850,000 people in the UK and the figure is growing at an unprecedented rate. Part of the reason for this is that people are more aware of dementia and are more willing to discuss it. As a result, they are more likely to seek medical help, leading to improved rates of diagnosis. However, by 2051, over 2 million people will have been diagnosed with a type of dementia. These are not just statistics; they represent the millions of families with loved ones who require special care and support to live a full life while coping with the illness. As a family there are many ways to cope with the situation and the following 5 methods can assist with understanding and managing your family difficulties in relation to dementia care. Help with Communication Difficulty communicating can be a major frustration for both parties. By understanding that different behaviours are how the person with dementia will attempt to communicate a need. Capture Life’s Journey Capturing someone’s life stories and memories is very important and also makes for an enjoyable activity to do and revisit. Recording events, feelings and special moments can also help you understand different situations as the dementia progresses. Engage in Activities Often people lose interest in activities they once enjoyed or simply forget about them. Involvement in these activities, which can be intellectual (puzzles and games), physical (gentle walks) or social (meeting old friends. Use the 5 Senses Stimulation of some, or all the 5 senses can promote calmness and reduce upset or agitation. Hearing a favourite piece of music can be soothing. Tasting different foods or smelling flowers can also promote familiar memories. Assist with Nutrition We know that people with dementia can forget to eat or may eat the wrong types of foods for maintaining good health Gentle prompting and providing full and nutritious meals can stave off possible malnutrition and other health problems. GET THAT ‘WOW’ FACTOR! REPAIRING THE DAMAGE Now’s the time to commit the rest of the coming year to looking after yourself with a diet and exercise regime that will have you looking good and feeling fit. This is traditionally the time when we think about summer holidays. How will you look in your swimsuit? Act now and deal with any unsightly bulges. Having resolved to start a diet, shed pounds and gain fitness you’ll probably discover how difficult this can be, especially if you are still preparing ‘normal meals’ for the rest of your family. That’s why you need the help of a professional – and you’re fortunate to have a nutrition and fitness expert in this local area. Lynda Loakes has some 25 years’ experience in running classes and has helped thousands of her class members to achieve their goals of losing weight and, just as importantly, improving fitness. Lynda’s classes are called WOW, not only because they are an amazing experience but also because the letters stand for Work Out With Lynda. When it comes to diet, Lynda advocates sensible eating which, once learned, will become a lifelong habit, not a ‘once every so often’ attempt at a quick fix. Lynda encourages ‘eating clean’ and all her menus involve cooking from scratch, using ingredients that provide just the right balance to keep the body healthy and fit. Don’t be put off, though, if your skills in the kitchen leave a little to be desired! Lynda’s recipes are simple and easy to follow, and time spent in preparation and cooking is kept to a minimum – and the ingredients are readily available and inexpensive. Even better, the meals taste superb! Lynda is very aware of the challenges that losing weight presents. She has been there herself so is keen to offer plenty of support to others. Fully trained in all aspects of nutrition, she helps class members to achieve their goals in a friendly and caring way. Each class starts with a private, one-to-one weigh-in, followed by a motivational talk. The exercises that follow cater for all ages and abilities and include high intensity fat-burning, muscle strengthening and overall posture and fitness improvement. Each week’s class is different, and Lynda has a wonderful sense of humour which creates plenty of fun and laughter. She encourages friendships that are built up in her classes with the camaraderie of mutual support from others aiming for similar goals. Lynda also arranges various social activities – parties and dances and she and her class members actively support local charities. Fitness-pilates courses are also offered by this very busy lady. Pilates exercises are

not strenuous and are suitable for all age groups and fitness abilities. They aim to enhance flexibility, build strength and develop a strong body core which improves balance and co-ordination. The classes run for an hour and are arranged as four-week courses and must be booked in advance. If you are serious about improving your looks and fitness in the coming year, why not go along to one of the Work Out With Lynda diet and fitness classes or enrol on one of her fitness pilates courses. You’ll be sure of a warm welcome from Lynda and her very friendly class members. Lynda’s website address is www.wowlynda.co.uk Email: lparter@blueyonder.co.uk Telephone: 020 8669 4316 Class times and venues are as follows:Monday – Fitness pilates courses 9.30 -10.30 a.m. – Highfield Hall, 320 Carshalton Road, Carshalton SM5 3QB; and 6-7 p.m. at Banstead Day Centre, The Horseshoe, Banstead SM7 2BQ. New Decade, New year, New bounce! If like me you cant quite believe that its 2020 you may have found the weeds have grown up around you without noticing. Some of us have planned ahead and had a move in mind for some time and the new year has always been earmarked for the next chapter, whilst there are others more reluctant movers who are moving out of necessity and have left it to the very last moment; effectively putting it off until the need becomes urgent. Whichever best describes you, the positivity in the sales market will undoubtably impact you. Very little property has come to market since the last quarter of 2019. This will impact you either positively or negatively depending on your associated property status. Sellers will be favoured, with less competition and consistent demand its likely stock will sell quickly. For the very same reason buyers will essentially experience reduced decision times and room for negotiation. If you are a seller we would encourage you to come to market as early as possible to take full advantage of this and essentially beat the spring activity which sees increased property levels. A handy tip for any buyers coming in a competitive market is to be prepared. Estate agents qualify buyers by their ability to buy and those that have their property on the market will be considered more serious than those that do not. If you are a first time buyer or are planning to let your existing property then obtaining a mortgage agreement in principle is helpful to show agents that you have the ability to buy and are serious. This may sound like a mine field, never fear we are here to help guide you in any way we can; including letting valuations, sales valuations, mortgage advice and solicitor quotes. On a positive note Fine and Country Cheam again finished 2019 as the number one agent in SM2 for property sales above 500k. We are grateful for the continued support of the local area, being based in Cheam ensures we are dedicated to providing the very best service and sale price. We are excited about 2020 and hope to further raise estate agency standards to the benefit of all. Contact Fine and Country for all of your property needs.

Manor Park A Brief History of
By local resident, Brent Stevens
Manor Park House was built in 1871 as a family home. Before being demolished in the 1980’s, it was also used as a prep school, a home for Belgian refugees, as an annexe for Sutton County School and for several years as the local library. The area it once occupied now forms part of the gardens, with a cafe and the War Memorial at the front. The house was commissioned by John Ruck. Born in London in 1811, he was a Fountain donated by Charles Yates successful wine merchant who married Marie Sayer in 1847. They moved into Sutton Court, a large house with extensive grounds around the area now occupied by the police station. John and Marie had six children and had Manor Park house made for them and moved into it in 1871. The children were Charles, Frederick, Ellen, Egerton, Harriet and Gordon. John died in 1888 and his wife six years later in 1894. It was believed that the Ruck children then sold the house, but recent records suggest that Egerton owned the house until 1905. All six children did well in life but special mention must be made about Harriet, who was elected as a guardian for N.E.Sutton, which meant she helped to manage the local Poor House and the distribution of “outdoor relief ” to those in poverty. This was one of the few avenues open for women to participate in local government. Charles followed his father into the wine trade. Egerton was a director of Sutton Water Corporation. The family were shocked in 1905 when both Gordon and Egerton died from heart attacks within a few days of each other. Egerton is buried at St. Dunstan’s in Cheam while Gordon lies next to his parents in St. Nicholas Churchyard in Sutton. The new owner the house rented it out to Sutton Preparatory School from 1905 to 1914. The Headmaster was A.W.F. Rutty, who as well as being in education, played cricket for

Belgian Refugees
Manor Park House post 1945
Surrey between 1908-1924 (His father had been headmaster at St. John’s School in Leatherhead from 1883-1909).The school taught boys from 6 to 15 years old. It had a CCF, fives courts and the grounds where the park is now situated were used as playing fields for cricket and soccer. Just before war broke out in 1914, the grounds were given to the council for as a park, while the house was designated to offer temporary accommodation to Belgian refugees fleeing from the invasion of their country by the Kaiser’s armies. By the middle of 1915 over 250,000 Belgians had come to Britain to escape the conflict and German occupation of their country. Local councils responded throughout England. Over 2000 committees were formed to help organise relief for the refugees. The photo on this page was donated by Bruce Brolinger whose mother, Louise is eight years old in this picture and is sitting on the left. Her mother and Aunt are second row from the back on the left. Meanwhile the council decided that the grounds of Manor Park should be a garden rather than a recreation ground. A fountain was donated by Charles Yates. After the Great War, the council chose this site for a war memorial. Two houses were demolished to create room for it. The memorial was financed by a local businessman Ralph Forster whose son Hugh was killed at Loos in 1915. In 1920 with the refugees now back in their own country the building was leased to a school again, this time the County School. This had opened in 1899 and had room for 150 pupils. In 1920, they had 200, hence hiring the house as an annexe. In 1928 a new site was acquired and the school moved out of their existing two sites when building was completed. This is now Sutton Grammar. The final occupiers of the house were books as it became the home of Sutton Library in 1937 until 1976 when it moved to its current site. Once the library moved, the house was demolished almost straight away. In 2010 the Manor Park cafe was opened and this was the first “eco” friendly building with a straw bale construction on the roof, which you can see today. Manor Park House may no longer be here with us but the Park is a good legacy. To advertise call 07894448189 or email carla@yourneighbourhooddirectory.com
