GET THAT ‘WOW’ FACTOR! GIVE YOURSELF A ‘SPRING CLEAN’ Every year the time comes when we notice the sun is shining, daffodils are in bloom, there’s blossom on the trees and wonderful bird song all around us. With this realisation comes thoughts that summer is just around the corner – and will those pretty summer dresses, shorts, bikinis and swimsuits still fit after an over-indulgent Christmas season and comfort eating to cope with the cold, dark winter days that followed? It’s not just a question of whether those clothes will fit, either. We need to look in the mirror and honestly evaluate how those clothes look on our ‘winter bodies’. Are we as toned as we were last summer, or have we developed flabby upper arms, paunchy stomachs and fleshy legs? No need to panic. Help is at hand. Just be positive and commit to embarking on a diet and fitness regime that can deliver real results within weeks. If you can’t muster enough will power to do this yourself, there’s a very inspiring lady who can help you. She’s Lynda Loakes and she runs local classes that promote healthy living through diet and exercise. Her company name is WOW, the initials standing for ‘Work Out With – Lynda’. Lynda has had nearly 25 years of experience in promoting the benefits of healthy eating combined with sensible and safe exercise. She is qualified to teach exercise to music and her routines incorporate low impact aerobics, muscle toning and ways of strengthening the body’s core to improve posture. Also trained in nutrition, Lynda can advise on weight loss goals and ways of achieving them. She speaks from experience, having lost over four stones herself some time ago – and, equally importantly, has managed to maintain that loss by a combination of healthy eating and exercise. Classes start with private weigh-ins (no-one but you and Lynda know your weight) and a short motivational talk follows. The rest of the class is devoted to exercise. Lynda’s many strengths include enthusiasm and encouragement to help class members to achieved their goals. More encouragement is provided by Lynda’s weekly newsletter which reminds class members about their goals and helps to to reinforce their resolve. Menus are also included which are not only ‘healthy’ but delicious, too. Lynda promotes the establishment of strong friendship bonds among class members and she also arranges various social activities and charity events. Although the object of the classes is serious - to lose weight and promote fitness they include a huge element of fun. Lynda’s sense of humour adds something very

special to all of her classes. So, if you’re unhappy with your body, if your clothes don’t look as good as they should, and if you’re lacking in energy and motivation, why not make some positive changes to your life right now – feel great, get healthier, make friends and have fun – all at the same time. Go WOW now, and when you try on those summer clothes and look in the mirror, you’ll say WOW (and so will your friends and family!). You can read more about Lynda and her classes on her website: www.wowlynda.co.uk.

Property most in demand! As summer rolls on the market heats up. We approach the end of the spring market and with it the glorious gardens are coming into full swing. Hats and lemonades at the ready. June is realistically the last month for those house hunters wanting a move before the new school year and as 2019 rumbles on and gathers pace, its the half year marker, Christmas will inevitably be at our door in a twinkling of an eye. 2019 has so far been similar to the last three years in values and unit sales. It’s most likely market activity will continue at its current levels for the foreseeable future. The price range most in demand currently is £500,000 - £1,000,000. However it’s important to add that 2018 saw the £1,500,000 - £3,000,000 bracket performing best when compared to the previous 10 years. Buyer levels have remained consistent and although Brexit was dominating the headlines early on in the year this coincided with our slow season which removed any lasting negativity. Buyers currently citing Brexit as a reason to abstain from a purchase are likely the buyers who will blame any negativity, easy to find at any time should you look, to not buy. It pays to be cautious but be realistic and objective about the market activity. Fine and Country are proud to offer assistance for your property needs. We provide sales, lettings and mortgage services and as ever you are guaranteed the very customer service.

A Brief History of

Cheam Village By local resident, Brent Stevens

An old engraving of Nonsuch Palace

There have been people living in Cheam for over 2000 years. Roman pottery has been found where Manor Road is now and the remains of a Saxon building are incorporated into the Lumley Chapel. Cheam is also mentioned as being part of Chertsey Abbey in 727 AD. In Saxon times, England was divided into fairly small parishes. Cheam was typical, with the Church and Manor House at the centre and fields surrounding them.

At this time, the key behind any settlement was a reliable water supply. North Cheam is based on clay while the south part of Cheam is on chalk. Between the two is a belt of “Thanet Sand” on which the original Cheam village was built. The soil retained the water and natural springs emerged. This is why most of the older buildings in Cheam are in the area of Park Lane and St. Dunstan’s Church. Prior to the Norman invasion around 1018, the owner this area was Athelston, (Archbishop of Canterbury from 1013-1020). He gave the “living” from Cheam to the monastery at Christchurch in Canterbury. After 1066, this changed when the new Archbishop, Lanfranc, who held office from 1070-1089, felt that Athelston had been far too generous to the monks and so divided Cheam into two. West Cheam, centred round the church was retained by the monastery, but East Cheam, roughly where Gander Green Lane is now, was taken over by the Archbishop. In the Domesday Book this change was recorded and it was also noted that Cheam overall had a population of around 300 living in about 50 houses. In the Middle Ages, Cheam became quite affluent because of the wool industry. Sheep farming was popular and very profitable, with most of the local wealth deriving from it. Cheam Market was given Royal assent by Henry III. The market built up a good reputation, especially for pottery. Cheam Library

St Dunstan’s Church

Cheam Railway Station

It is thought the Royal Charter was signed on 15 May 1259 and since the 1800’s this has been celebrated with a fair. The next major change to Cheam came with the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538. West Cheam was taken away from the monastery in Canterbury and came under the King’s control. The Archbishop then was Thomas Cranmer and he wanted to swap his land in East Cheam with some land held by the King in Chislet Park in Kent. Henry VIII thought this was a good idea because he thought Cheam was an ideal spot for a new palace he was designing. With East and West Cheam now reunited, Henry added the village of Cuddington with a view to demolishing it in order to enhance the palace’s grounds. With this land now under the King’s control, Henry was ready to build his new Palace – Nonsuch. After Henry’s death, Nonsuch Palace was sold by Queen Mary to the Duke of Norfolk in 1553. East Cheam stayed with the crown until Queen Mary granted it to the newly created Viscount Montagu, but in 1575, Montagu sold it to the Duke of Norfolk, thus reuniting Cheam. However mounting costs forced the Norfolk family to sell the palace back to Crown in 1592. It was used by Elizabeth and the early Stuarts before being given to one of Charles II’s mistresses, who demolished the building to pay off her gambling debts. Despite the presence of the Palace and regular visits from Royalty, Cheam remained a quiet village until the nineteenth century, when two key events altered the situation. In 1847, the railway arrived, with the line from Victoria to Sutton being extended to Epsom. Then in 1863, Cheam was linked to the mains water supply. These two factors explain the rapid expansion of Cheam. The population was 616 in 1801; by 1900 it was 3,500 With ever improving communication links Cheam became a desirable place to live. The age of the commuter had arrived, but with many areas having been Royal hunting grounds, this meant that Cheam did not urbanise in the same way as Sutton, and Green Belt restrictions covered vast areas around Cheam village. In the 1930’s the roads were widened leading up to the main crossroads and the structure stays much the same today. The two Manor Houses, one for West Cheam (situated near the library) and one for East Cheam, (which was situated near Gander Green Lane) have long been demolished, but other historic buildings can be seen today and these will be explored in a future article.
