the school had met its objective.
The History of
Belmont Hospital
By local resident, Brent Stevens
However with the dawn of a new century these municipal schools became too expensive. As a result, the school closed in 1902, but in 1908 it became a workhouse. It was used as an overflow for 12 London Boroughs, but was principally owned by Fulham Board of Governors. In time 1200 men lived there. They were worked hard. Discipline was harsh. Between January and May 1910, 3149 punishments were handed out. The most common reprimand was being placed on a diet of bread and water. It is not surprising that in November 1910, a serious riot broke out in the workhouse, involving some 200 men. In 1915, the workhouse in Belmont closed temporarily and the building was used as a hospital for German POW’s as well as being an internment camp for enemy aliens, who were kept there without trial. In 1922 the building briefly reverted to being a workhouse and changed its name to the Belmont
The building that became Belmont Hospital was constructed in 1853 and demolished in 1982. During that time it was a school, a workhouse, a training centre, a POW camp, a hospital for the war wounded, and eventually a home for people with mental health problems. Lord Shaftesbury was very concerned about the welfare of orphaned children in the rapidly expanding industrialised cities of the mid nineteenth century In 1844, the City Boroughs were made responsible for these children and several London Councils combined to provide a boarding school that would absorb orphaned or abandoned children. As a result, the South Metropolitan District School was established in Belmont and it was ready to take pupils in 1853. The aim of the school was to lift the child from a life of poverty and give them the skills to earn a living. At its peak, there were 1500 pupils in the school. The school was divided into three sections: boys, girls and infants. Each had its own block and play area. Amongst the skills taught were carpentry, shoemaking, millinery, farming and surprisingly music. Many ex-pupils ended up in the army, especially the military bands.
All staff lived on the site and the school had its own farmland, infirmary and gas works! It was pretty much self sufficient. Its reputation as a school was mixed. Infant mortality rates were initially high. On the plus side pupils were largely better off than living on the streets. A report from 1870 stated that 70% of pupils who left gained useful employment, so in one sense

Institution. Labour MP George Lansbury campaigned constantly to achieve closure. He achieved his goal in 1929, when the workhouse was finally closed and the LCC re-named the building the Sutton Training Centre. Residential places for up to 700 men were available and courses included farming, carpentry, car repair and other jobs. In 1939, fearing huge numbers of injured from bombing, it became a neurosis unit and renamed Belmont Hospital. In the opening months of the conflict, it had more staff than
patients, but as the Phoney War ended and the Blitz became reality, the 800 beds at Belmont filled with the victims of the Luftwaffe, with both the physical and psychological problems being treated. The bridge over the railway line was strengthened to take double-decker buses which were capable bringing more people to be treated. After the war Belmont Hospital was developed as a centre for those affected by mental illness. Modern treatments were adopted and patients given freedom to move around the hospital and take leave at weekends. Occupational therapy remained a cornerstone of rehabilitation and at its peak, 1500 patients a year were accepted for treatment. Despite its success, spiralling costs forced Belmont to close (1973) and transfer all patients over to Sutton Hospital. It was demolished in 1982, and the only part surviving was the Henderson Hospital, but this has also disappeared and residential houses now occupy this area. With over 100 market and fun stalls, traditional fairground rides, live music, Punch & Judy shows and much much more to entertain you and all the family, this bi-annual event is a wonderful day out for the whole family! As usual, we are raising funds to support the fantastic work of the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital and in particular their Oaks Centre for Children and Young People, so please have a go at all of our fun stalls (all proceeds go to charity); buy a raffle ticket and, if you enjoy your day, please make a generous contribution in one of our collecting buckets. We raised £12,000 at the last Festival which was donated to the Oaks Centre; with your support, let’s see if we can raise even more this year! Live entertainment – We have spectacular line-up of live entertainment on the Main Stage, in the Park, in the Children’s Arena and in the Tea Room. The opening procession will be led by the rousing Gary Mason drummers and will feature the wonderful Shimmy Sisters. Main stage acts include acclaimed jazz singer Jenny Green, the Frisbys, the Tenovus Cancer Choir, the Aultones, Emma Stevens, Holloway Road with closing performance by the Avenue Academy. Compered throughout by Radio Marsden. In the Park, you can relax and soak up the atmosphere to the accompaniment of live Brass Band music from the Norwood Wind Ensemble. Or you can chill out in the Tea Room and enjoy a full line up of gentle relaxing live performances. Kiddies Fun – And of course, we do our best to make sure our younger guests are blissfully entertained. From traditional Punch and Judy shows and fairground rides, to face painting, a bouncy castle and the infamous monster slide, all guaranteed to bring smiles to the faces of our younger guests. There will also be children’s entertainment performances, plus numerous Fairground style stalls where you can win prizes or buy pocket money toys! Food and Drink – Whether you’re a fan of sweet or savoury, we’ve got all sorts of tasty treats on offer to tempt your taste buds! We have a monster BBQ serving burgers and hot dogs throughout the afternoon. Or if you’re in the mood for something sweet, you can gorge yourself on delicious homemade cakes in the Tea Room or buy a donut, a crepe or ice-cream from one of the food stalls. Beer and Pimms are available in the Beer Tent in the Park and from the Social Club in the heart of the market stall area. Street Market – Station Road will be thronging with over 60 market trading stalls offering a wide variety of products at affordable prices ranging from jewellery to glassware, paintings to jams to name but a few! Grand Raffle – Buy your tickets (£1) in advance or on the day and win some fantastic prizes. Top prizes include a Krups Espresso “Bean to Cup” Coffee Machine, a Lightning McQueen Electric Toy Car, an Amazon Echo, a Tour of Houses of Parliament with Tea, plus many more exciting prizes. Tickets are available from shops in Belmont Village displaying the Festival Logo and are also being distributed by residents’ associations and local schools and clubs. 2018 Summer update Firstly thank you for taking the time to read this, with lots of information fighting for our attention my hope is that you will find this short piece of some interest or use. The housing in 2018 so far has two major themes; A) prices remain mostly static but positive B) Activity hasn’t followed its usual timing patterns. Here we explore both in greater detail. House price indexes have shown value performance differing around the country with London underperforming against its peers. Wow what a worrying report…until you read the into the data or understand the sources and starting points. My job involves property discussion everyday and its amazing how we interpret these reports and the filters we use when applying them; a buyer will relativize them differently from a seller (even if it’s the same person!) over emphasizing the negatives and positives to suit. Within many of these indexes central London is separated from Greater London but you have to dig deeper than what’s nationally reported to see this. Secondly these reports are often 2 -3 months post the fact and rely on sources such as mortgage applications, if the report reflects the first quarter then one must expect this to be slightly dower as this is our low season as the market ramps into gear for the spring summer months. Generally the market has been stable and holding since 2016, the lack of growth is seen by some as a failing market, however the market cannot win as growth spurts are negatively reported on as being ‘housing bubbles’ which need to be controlled. It could be argued that the other parts of the country are attracting growth due to the lower starting prices and any % change is lower overall. A market which is stable and healthy needs the a balanced amount of buyers and sellers; any greater numbers for either side creates unsustainability. My advice is to look beyond the headlines. The first quarter has for many years been our low season with sellers using the time to ready their property for market and buyers getting over the Christmas financial hang overs. 2018 was different, January sprung from the gates with gusto and was closely followed by February for its vigour. It was March that became problematic with the expectations much higher than usual following two ‘good’ months, any hope was quickly extinguished by the snow and minus temps and the month under performed against historic counter parts. Following on April and May have swung back around with positive months and in many cases multiple offers and sealed bids. For the remainder of 2018 my hope isn’t for soaring prices but for much of the same; stable prices and a stable market. If you are considering selling or buying and would like to discuss how we can be of assistance please feel free to call or visit our offices within Cheam Village.
