Welcome to the last issue of 2020. This has been such a challenging year for many, and I wanted to end on a postive note. I hope that as our second lockdown is ending, you may be looking forward to making some plans and having a little more freedom to meet friends and family. End of 2020. A most bizarre year. A year which we couldn’t have imagined before and hopefully looking back. Having the concrete boots of lockdown placed upon us and the economy from mid-March until mid-May, it was envisaged the property market would nose dive with the anticipated job losses and mortgage liquidity drought. Except this didn’t happen and those lucky enough to have bought or continued during and just after lockdown are now ‘quids in’. As we learn more about the official process employed to estimate the justification for lockdown its not surprising the guestimates for the housing market were as wildly detached from reality as the expected peak of the first wave. Ending the year, I have realised that I placed questionable faith and expected more from those in governance and from the conjecture, I dare not care them fact, we read daily in the newspapers. In any case, onto more interesting news and the year has been very positive for the housing market with high levels of demand and multiple buyers to most available property. Currently, the stamp duty holiday finishes March end 2021, however there is some speculation this could be extended due to the reliance of the economy upon the housing market. Generally the start of any year is always a warm up toward the busier spring/early summer season, however this creates opportunity for both buyers and sellers to pick up the best of each. Those wishing to take advantage of the stamp duty holiday, if that ends March, are starting to cut if fine and should really motor to find. Reassuringly we have been back in the offices since mid-May and we will be open for much of Christmas to help those wanting to sell and buy. Santa’s Sleigh
will be bringing the Santa Sleigh to you again in December THE SANTA’S SLEIGH WILL BE ON OUR STREEETS THIS DECEMBER, if Covid restrictions allow it. As Cheam and Sutton Rotary, we are hoping that Covid restrictions will allow our Santa’s Sleigh to fly through our streets again, this December. The Santa Sleigh is now in its 55th year. Every year in December it has been touring our streets bringing Christmas joy to the residents in Cheam, Sutton and Worcester Park. Normally the Sleigh should be accompanied by Santa and a group of elves collecting door-to-door donations. This year when Santa heard about the pandemic restrictions he said to his elves: “We cannot disappoint the children. The Sleigh must go out on all our routes. With Covid-19 restricting our lives, we need the Sleigh more than ever to give joy to children and adults alike.” Although the Sleigh will be on our streets there will be NO door-to-door collections and there will NO interaction with the residents, as these are not permitted. But the Sleigh will tour the streets so that children and adults alike can find joy from watching the Sleigh from their homes. We will be accepting donations online via http://www.santas-sleigh.uk In addition to the Sleigh we have other Christmas fundraising activities which we are not permitted to do this year: the very popular mulled wine and mince pies stand at the Cheam Traders Christmas Evening and supermarket collections. We usually raise around £16,000 – £18,000 from all the Christmas activities, the Sleigh and the collections, and we donate these funds to a long list of charities including Sutton Home Start, Sutton Night Watch, Ryan MS Therapy Centre, Macular Society, Muschamps, St Dunstan’s Church, Banstead District Scouts and more. We have organized a Virtual Santa this year where children can visit the Santa’s Grotto online.
