Highlights St Raphael’s Fire & Ice Walk

As I sit here writing this I feel torn thinking back to the warm weather of the summer with so many Autumn and Winter events and festivities to look forward to. It may be colder but with the thought of log fires, Autumn walks, and even Christmas Pantos it does feel the right time to be putting on the hat and scarf and embracing all the exciting and fun things to come.

Established in 2006, Connections of Cheam is a private hire vehicle (mini-cab) firm built on the belief that the mini-cab industry, first and foremost is a customer service based industry not simply a driving based one. We feel that the paying public deserve to be collected at a time of their chosing in a clean and reliable vehicle by a polite and friendly driver and charged a competative fare. Every one of our drivers has been invited to work for us because they are reliable, conscientious, friendly, polite and articulate.

WORK OUT WITH LYNDA AND REACH YOUR DIET & FITNESS GOALS I have been running fitness and nutrition classes in Sutton, Carshalton and Banstead for over 23 years and certainly seenand experienced the changes as to how we get fit and lose weight. We are certainly more educated in realising that what we eat and how we move brings greater benefits to our long term health. Many find the amount of information offered overwhelming and so I work with members helping them understand the benefits of good nutrition and exercise for long term health benefits. However, for me and my members the key for health and fitness is having fun! So many think exercise and ‘diets’ are dull and boring, but that is certainly not the case at WOW. My members range in age from 21 to 88 years old showing that my classes can be adapted to suit all ages and abilities. The style of fitness classes available has changed. At WOW we encapsulate that variety which now includes Fitness Pilates courses. My enthusiasm and passion for what I do is clear. I know it’s not easy walking in a venue full of strangers for the first time, but at my classes you really are made to feel welcome. If you follow a healthy eating plan enjoy regular classes and take on the support and motivation from me and the other members, you will soon see results, plus have lot of fun in the process. We will always be grateful for those who created a world of aerobics classes. However today it is the hard work and support from experts like myself which means we can enjoy great workouts (of all descriptions), learn more about good nutrition and have fun, all to the benefit of our health.

and laughter. Those attending regularly build friendships with other class members and such friendships are encouraged and supported by Lynda’s twice-yearly parties and other social activities – all with proceeds being donated to local charities. So, why not go along to one of the W ork O ut W ith Lynda classes? You can be sure of a warm and friendly welcome from Lynda and her class members. Like them, you’ll be exclaiming ‘ WOW’ when your scales and your mirror show some really positive results. Get in touch When you go along, your first class is free, (excludes Fitness Pilates) to enable you to judge whether WOW is right for you. Local History Focus The War Memorial, Manor Park, Sutton

By local resident, Brent Stevens

This November it will be 100 years since the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War. Over 700,000 British servicemen lost their lives defeating Germany. Most households lost a relative or friend. All over the UK meetings took place about the best way to honour and remember those killed. The location chosen in Sutton was in Manor Park. The Park itself opened in May 1914. In 1921 the War Memorial Committee bought two more houses adjacent to the park, and after clearing the site built the memorial by June 1921. Sir Ralph Forster, a local businessman and philanthropist unveiled the memorial. The list of names inscribed included Sir Ralph’s son, Hugh. Hugh Forster was born in 1883 in Newcastle. He was eight when the family moved to Sutton and he attended Banstead House Prep School between 1892 and 1897. Hugh then went to Charterhouse for five years. He was a gifted sportsman and represented his House and School in a wide variety of teams. Outside school time he played cricket for Banstead and Sutton, rugby for Sutton and Epsom and was a member of Banstead Downs Golf Club. After leaving school Hugh decided not to go to university but instead travelled round the world boosting family business, especially in Argentina. When war broke out in August 1914, Hugh applied for a commission in the army and he joined the King’s Own Scottish Borderers. By December 1914, he was made a Captain and by February 1915 a temporary Major in charge of “C” Company. Training took place in Winchester and in July 1915 continued in France. Hugh’s company took over the trenches in Loos on 10 August. The trenches were quiet at first but this changed in late September. The French were planning a big attack further south in the Champagne area and wanted the British to attack in the north at Loos to divert German forces. Haig thought there was insufficient artillery to sustain an attack and that no-man’s land was too flat and afforded little cover. To compensate for the lack of shells, the British decided to use gas for the first time in the war. A heavy bombardment started on 21 September. The infantry attacks that followed had some successes on the first day, but the reserves were held too far back to exploit any breakthroughs. The first day of the infantry attack, 25 September, Hugh led his men over the top but was soon wounded. Hugh refused help, and it was evening before he was eventually taken to an ambulance station. By then he was considered too badly wounded to move further back to a military hospital, and he died of his wounds three days later. In his unit, every officer on duty on 25 September was either wounded, gassed or killed. Hugh is buried at Noueux- les- Mines Cemetery in France. He is also commemorated at the Sutton War Memorial, and in a plaque in Christchurch. In the same battle, Rudyard Kipling’s son was also killed. The lingering memory of the Great War is the casualty rate. Hugh’s death was typical – an infantry attack into well emplaced German machine gun where the chances of success were limited. Some at home questioned the purpose of the war and the leadership. What was never in doubt was the tenacity of those doing the fighting, as as reflected in Hugh’s death. There was a strong belief that such sacrifice should be recognised and remembered by building war memorials, which can be found in most towns. Hugh Forster was one of 518 Sutton men who fell in the war and it is right their bravery should be recorded and honoured each year on 11 November.

Social responsibility The Fine & Country Foundation has been created to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness. Homelessness is a growing issue both in the UK and overseas. Often the reasons for it are misunderstood, with many blaming the individuals for poor life decisions and carelessness. The reality is: people become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons that cannot be avoided, such as family breakdowns, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness does not only involve putting a roof over people’s heads, it is also trying to tackle the root of the problem and asking the question: why did they became homeless in the first place? The Fine & Country Foundation is dedicated to bringing together all Fine & Country agents in over 300 locations worldwide to raise awareness of the causes of homelessness whilst supporting homeless charities. Each month Fine & Country offices host and take part in numerous fundraisers and events to raise money for local, national or international homeless charities of their choice. Starting in March 2018, we will have two periods a year when homeless charities can apply for grants from us of up to £15,000. Applications will be open in March and October each year. If you have a homeless charity that you would like to recommend for a grant, please let us know. Find out more about our grant scheme contact foundation@fineandcountry.com . Nationally - We are partnered with End Youth Homelessness, a national campaign formed of nine homeless charities across the UK. Internationally - we fund Happy Home, a girls home in Bandladesh in association with Action Aid. Girls from age 6-18 are given a safe and happy upbringing with a proper education and childhood. We are working to rebuild the village of Thangpalkot1 in Nepal which was destroyed by earthquakes in 2015. Each home costs just £1,600 to build. In 2017, we funded 30 houses through donations and a fundraising expedition to Everest Base Camp. This year, we are trekking from Kathmandu to the village to raise fund for more houses. Sponsor a family for just £1,600 and transform their lives for generations. For more information on the foundation or how we can help you move please contact us now.
