Hello and welcome to the October and November issue. As I am writing this there is a real Autumn feel, the leaves have fallen, the air is fresher and i’m thinking of all the things I can do with my children over the coming weeks. Nature trails, walking our dog, wrapping up warm and lots of Hot Chocolate afterwards. We are lucky that we have so many walks and parks nearby, plenty of open space to stay safe. Whether it be a long hike or a short walk around the block, or even a cuppa in the local cafe to get some fresh air, we really are blessed with our surroundings. Senior Snippets from Tony Ward of Home Instead Senior Care (Sutton) Preventing hospitalization Over the past months we have seen just what a great job the NHS does for us but how many people, especially our pensioners, want to spend more time than necessary in hospital? Excluding Covid-19 issues, more older people than ever are being admitted to hospital but how many of these visits could have been prevented if the right support had been in place at home? There are many ways you can help prevent hospitalization among the older generation and so here are just 5 ways you can help do that for yourself or your loved ones. Keep Health in Check Having an excellent GP is essential but equally important is making sure that older people follow their GP’s direction. Ensure that regular blood pressure readings are taken as people with high blood pressure run a higher risk of having a stroke or heart attack. Keep an eye out for changes in health such as worsening chronic conditions or unused medication. Keep physically and mentally active Encourage your older relatives to get active where possible. Walking for just 5 or 10 minutes at a time several times a week is a great way to begin. Keeping the brain active through activities such as crosswords, drawing, or learning something new are also excellent ways to stimulate the connections between nerve cells. Maintain a healthy diet You should encourage your loved ones to work towards a balanced diet containing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish and starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice. Extra vitamin D and Calcium should also be on the menu to help combat Osteoporosis. Keep hydrated It is important that you or your family member stays hydrated, even if they say they are not thirsty. It is advisable to drink around 1.5 litres of fluid a day. Companionship Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health and so, when the current situation permits, it is important to encourage social activities. Joining clubs and associations or even volunteering to reach out and help others could all help with future well- being. In addition to the above, a regular check around the home looking for potential causes of falls (loose rugs, clutter, obstructions, poor lighting etc.) would also help to reduce the need for hospital stays.
