An attempt to retire P
AdvertISeMeNt
eter Migliaccio tried to retire. He really did. After nearly 44 years building highly regarded restaurants from New York City to sunny Florida, he and his wife, Susan, put their popular Café Gabbiano on Siesta Key into the hands of new owners. They planned to embrace a more relaxing lifestyle, enjoying some travel to Europe, particularly Peter’s native Italy, and boating on the blue waters of the Gulf. That lasted about four months. “I found that I missed all of my friends from the restaurant and needed to have them around me again,” Peter said. “As exciting as it was to expand my former location as it grew, I knew this time I wanted to create a very intimate experience where I can give my personal attention to everyone who comes in.” And so, CasAntica was born.
Steakhouse. If early days are an indication, Peter and Susan are well on their way to another success since CasAntica has been full since it opened and even has had quite a waiting list for reservations. “Its great to know that people are coming here because they know me and my food,” Peter said. “Since we’re downtown now, we’re also looking forward to getting to know people who may not be familiar with us from before.” Those who are familiar with the exuberant Peter know that he is involved in all the details of the restaurant from the selection and training of his friendly staff to the background music, whose play list he personally selected. “CasAntica’s menu and the ambiance created here are the accumulation of 44 years of creativity that has been refined to include only what I consider to be the best,” Peter said. “As I think about how I want to end my career, I feel that I am offering the best of me and what I’ve learned for my friends to enjoy.”
Peter and Susan have a gift for creating a fine dining experience complete with white tablecloths and attentive staff, but without the stuffy pretentiousness. Having a leisurely dinner there is more like sharing a gourmet meal with friends at home, which makes the new location perfect since it was formerly a family residence. True to its name, which is Italian for old house, CasAntica was built in 1926. It is located at 1213 N. Palm Avenue just down the block from Florida Studio Theatre on one of downtown’s most picturesque streets where an outdoor wine bar and garden seating make the most of the gentle sea breezes and leafy view. The Migliacios have shown that they can create a culinary success where others have repeatedly not been able to do so. They were successful in their former location for nine years in a spot that previously had a revolving door of restaurants, and CasAntica presents a similar task, having housed a number of restaurants previously, including the notable Zak’s Closed Sunday’s

Collaborative artists Robert Stackhouse and Carol Mickett created the 32-layer, silk-screen print “American Print, Ode to the 2-by-4” in 2001 in Cortona, Italy. They worked with master printer Dennis O’Neil in a print shop temporarily set up in the laundry room of a convent. The image is of a sculpture the artists built on the campus of the University of Georgia, “Fallen Water,” and Mickett wrote the featured poem. Their work includes paintings, prints and site-specific installations. This piece is featured in “Tidal Works,” which is on display through March 23, at Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art Gallery.

‘King for a Day’
In 1840, “King for a Day“ was the second opera Verdi debuted, and it didn’t go over well with the audience — it was the first comedy he attempted. To synopsize the complicated plot to a sentence: It’s about Cavaliere di Belifore posing as the king, who, on a visit to Barone di Kelbar, falls in love with his widowed niece who is already spoken for by another man. Maestro Victor DeRenzi will direct “King for a Day“ (Un Giorno di regno) and it means he’s checking another Giuseppe Verdi off the list — it’s down to the final three. DeRenzi initiated the Verdi Cycle in 1989. In 2016, the completed vision makes Sarasota Opera the only opera company in the world to see the complete works of Verdi, and one of few opera companies to present the rarely performed “King for a Day.” WHEN: 8 p.m.; runs March 2 through March 24 Where: Sarasota Opera House tickets: $19 to $120 Call: 328-1300
Michael Donald Edwards looks over the script for

2. ‘Clybourne Park’
The rarely performed comedic opera about
what it would be like to become king for a day comes to Sarasota Opera House.
3. 2013 Sarasota Film Festival Last year’s 10-day program featured films such as “Robot & Frank,” “Dark Horse” and “Under African Skies” and brought 230 films from 30 countries. Visits from actors Dominic Monaghan, Rory Kennedy and Ashley Bell, as well as conversations and appearances by actor Frank Langella and director Todd Solondz were some festival highlights; along with community events and celebrations. Director Tom Hall will announce the 200 new films reeling in to SRQ for the 15th Sarasota Film Festival Thursday, March 13. “The reason I love this job so much is that ever year, what we present Is entirely new because film is a living, breathing art form,” he says. This means upcoming talent and fresh stories, visits from promising filmmakers, thousands of new students enrolled in the educational programming and new celebrations.
WHEN: Runs April 5 through April 14 Where: Regal Cinemas Hollywood 20 tickets: $12 Call: 366-6200
Asolo Repertory Theatre’s WHEN: 8 p.m.; runs theme of An American March 15 through May 2 Character continues with the provocative Pultizer Prize and Where: Asolo Tony Award-winning producRepertory Theatre tion “Clybourne Park” under tickets: $20 to $75 the direction of Michael Call: 351-8000 Donald Edwards, producing artistic director. It just goes to show that the clever theme tackles all sides of what it means to be American, this one being race and gentrification. Playwright Bruce Norris originally wrote the play in response to 1959 play “Raisin in the Sun,” and incorporates some of the same characters spinning on the same events in a plot that looks at race and real estate, as prominent of an argument in 1959 as it is in the 21st century.

“Dali’s Chest
of Drawers” by Ray Peper
Art Center Sarasota puts on an entertaining and fun event every year that sends great art by talented local artists down the runway. Think trash-turned-treasure with custom made gowns out of non-traditional materials made into glamorous and funky looking gowns. Made from surgical gloves, Observer newsprint or recycled plastic grocery bags from area artists such as Carl Abbott, Andrea Mihalyffy, Jackie Peters Cully and 2012’s “HelpOfra Friedman and lots more — this night emphasizes ing Hands” by creativity and community. Sarah Ford
Principals Kate Honea,
Ricardo Graziano and the rest of Sarasota Ballet’s company will present “La Fille mal Gardée.“
Iain Webb made Sarasota Ballet’s season a particularly exciting one. Upcoming “La Fille mal Gardée“ is no exception. This full-length ballet is considered one of Sir Frederick Ashton’s masterpieces and is full of drama and sadness but at the same time is fun and humorous about Lise who is in love with Colas, but her mother, Simone, wants her to marry a nerdy son of a vineyard owner. This version is the most familiar staged production that was originally staged in 1960 for the Royal Ballet.

The Breakfast House Creativity is key at Sarasota’s most talked about dining establishment. The Breakfast House, located on Fruitville Road, downtown (look for the yellow house with the white picket fence), has become one of the most popular breakfast and lunch eateries to hit the city. It’s the menu that draws visitors in. A hint of coconut where you’d least expect it. An edible orchid served alongside a fluffy pancake. The collaboration of design, intuition and a few “secret” ingredients, draws in foodies to start their day off with a fusion of mouthwatering tastes. Customers come for the signature Key West Benedict, Homemade Corn beef Hash, or the Delectable Island pancakes. There’s an outdoor garden, with seating for diners. Follow the yellow brick road and enter into the garden where you will enjoy dining under an array of oak trees. The Breakfast House opened its second location in March 2012, so now Customers have 2 locations to choose from. Finally a Great Breakfast.
