Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board Vice Chairman Jack Daly will seek the District 4 seat on the Longboat Key Town Commission. Town Clerk Trish Granger notified Daly in an email Friday that he qualified to run for the seat in the town’s March 10, 2015 general municipal election. At press time, Daly was the only

candidate who has qualified for the District 4 seat. Mayor Jim Brown, who has held the District 4 seat for more than five-and-a-half years and will term-limit out of office in 2015, told the Longboat Observer in September that he hoped Daly would consider a run. “I think he’d be a good commissioner, and he’s taken an interest

in the town,” Brown said at the time. Daly, 78, said he spoke to several individuals before deciding to run. “Jim Brown was influential, I’ll tell you that, as were several other commissioners,” he said. Originally from Norwich,

+ Longboat Key keeps it clean We’re still reeling from Longboat Key’s exclusion from Movoto’s “10 Sexiest Small Cities in America,” which named Sarasota and Bradenton the first and third sexiest small cities, respectively. But Longboat Key recently earned a distinction that softened the blow: We’re one of the cleanest cities in Manatee County. That’s right, our Code Enforcement beat out other municipalities for litter law enforcement and won a Keep Manatee Beautiful Public Service Award. The cities of Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach and Anna Maria also received awards; Palmetto and Bradenton did not. Keep Manatee Beautiful Executive Director Ingrid McClellan presented Code Enforcement Officer Chris Elbon with a plaque Oct. 23.

We encourage Perry to walk this way for a book-signing.

Longboat Key is thousands of miles away from the center of the Ebola outbreak — but the town’s first responders are prepared, just in case.

Firefighter/ paramedic Jose Rivera

“Is the town prepared for Ebola?” Longboat Key Fire Rescue Chief Paul Dezzi has gotten the question from concerned citizens in recent weeks. His answer: “We’re as ready as we can be.” Town Manager Dave Bullock announced at the end of the Longboat Key Town Commission’s Oct. 20 regular workshop that its police and firefighter/paramedics are fully integrated with the county health departments’ protocols for handling suspected Ebola patients. Commissioner Lynn Larson asked Bullock if the town bought hazmat suits that cover the necks, referring to the protocol breach that allegedly occurred at Texas Presbyterian Hospital, where nurses treated

an Ebola patient in protective clothing that left their necks exposed. (The answer: Yes.) “It’s a low probability that we would be faced with it, but we have to prepare because we have so many international residents and people who travel,” Larson told the Longboat Observer. According to Dezzi, each fire and emergency medical services department in Florida must implement an infection control protocol for dealing with a suspected Ebola case. Because Longboat Key Fire Rescue handles both fire and EMS calls, it was required to develop its protocol with its medical director, Dr. Steven Newman. The town has purchased 40 hazmat suits at a cost of $30 each and four respirators that hook into air masks at $900 apiece to use if firefighter/ paramedics believe a patient may have the virus. But the most important step in the protocol begins

before firefighter/paramedics arrive at the scene. “The dispatch center is the first line for us,” Dezzi said. “A lot of our patients have flu or cold symptoms, so if you call 911, there’s a CDC (Center for Disease Control) protocol in place where the dispatcher asks you if you have been traveling to a list of countries.” If the patient has traveled to an affected country in West Africa, the dispatcher asks other questions, including whether the patient has a fever, and transmits that information to first responders. Firefighter/paramedics would then use universal precautions, including wearing protective gear. They would also notify hospitals and local health agencies. The department would limit exposure, possibly sending just one or two firefighter/paramedics to treat the patient. “It’s a common sense approach to this,” Dezzi said.

The department would determine if it evacuates properties after an exposure on a case-by-case basis, according to Dezzi. Whether an entire condominium building would be evacuated might depend on whether it has interior or exterior hallways. Dezzi said that departments develop similar protocols whenever a contagious disease surfaces. Departments went through the same procedures with SARS and bird flu. Dezzi remembers the early days of the AIDS epidemic, when firefighters were trained to wear air tanks for protection when they treated a patient they knew or suspected had the virus. COURT CALL

Unit owners seek stay in lawsuits Colony owners are asking the 12th Judicial Circuit to put on hold the cases until a bankruptcy judge rules on a related matter.

I

n 2005, the Longboat Key Town Commission unanimously approved plans for an 11-unit condo at 4765 Gulf of Mexico Drive. More than nine years later, those plans are nearing fruition for the rare parcel of Gulf-front land. Site work began last week for the $37 million Infinity project that will bring 11 new luxury units to the Key, priced between $2.95 million and $4.95 million. “We’re in the process now of starting site clearing,” said Randy Moore, managing partner of developer Crossgate Partners LLC, of Atlanta. “We’re excited to be off the ground and running.” Moore estimated that in the next couple of weeks, contractors will begin laying the foundation for the new clubhouse. The condominium has the same basic footprint of the Bleu Claire project that was planned for the property in 2005, however, its design has been modified to have a “coastal contemporary” look instead of the Mediterranean design that was planned for Bleu Claire. The Holiday Beach Resort, which was demolished in July 2013, was previously located on the site. Lee Rugh, sales associate at Michael Saunders & Co., who is marketing the project, said that five units have sold, and one is under contract. Rugh said she has received calls about the property since the installation of the construction fence around the property last week. “I think the start of construction has spurred a lot of interest,” Rugh said. Sarasota architect Mark Sultana, of DSDG Architects, is the designer. Residences will have between 3,380 square feet to 5,456 square feet. Wayne Martin, new homes and condominiums sales manager at Michael Saunders & Co., said many of the property’s amenities — including a clubhouse, fitness center and a lighted HarTru tennis court — will be closer to Gulf of Mexico Drive, while the building will overlook the Gulf. Other amenities include a beachside infinity-edge swimming pool and a hot tub spa that overlooks the beach. “It’s going to be a great building,” Martin said. “Some of those balconies are close to or up to 1,000 square feet, which is pretty much the size of a small condominium.” The project is scheduled for completion in late 2015 or the first quarter of 2016.

Infinity …

and beyond

Construction of the 11-unit Infinity condominium will begin in November, adding to a finite inventory of new Key construction.

...BEYOND INFINITY…

The following new residential construction projects continue on the Key:

Aria condominium

2251 Gulf of Mexico Drive Developer Jay Tallman’s Ascentia Development Group broke ground on the 16-unit, $60 million Aria condominium project in July and is currently on schedule for completion in fall 2015, according to project spokeswoman Amy Drake. “We’re pouring the first level of slab for the first living level under the garage,” Drake said. “We’ve taken nearly four months for site work. The vertical columns are in, and now we’re pouring the first deck.” Thirteen of the condo’s 16 units are cur-

rently under contract. Prices range from $3.44 million to $4.25 million. The restored 1935 Villa Am Meer home on the property will become the condo’s future residents’ club and will include a catering kitchen, guest residence and wine cellar.

Bonaire Triton Bend

located off of Neptune Avenue near the 2900 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive The single-family Triton Bend neighborhood is located mid-Key and will eventually have 13 homes. Currently, five homes are at or near completion. Two have certificates of occupancies, one of which is currently occupied, and developing agent Walter Hackett, of Michael Saunders & Co., expects the other three to receive certificates of occupancy in the next few weeks. Hackett estimates the remaining eight residences will be built over the next two years. Prices begin at $1.1 million. “The demand is definitely picking up, and of course, we’re coming into season,” Hackett said. “The season looks very promising.”

5005 Gulf of Mexico Drive

Ho l m e s Beach developer S h a w n Kaleta plans to break ground on the first homes in the nine-home Bonaire subdivision by the end of the year. Contractors began clearing the 3.48-acre property of invasive plant species earlier this year. During the summer, work came to a temporary halt while Kaleta waited for the Florida Department of Transportation to approve construction of a road off of Gulf of Mexico Drive, a state highway. “Rather than clearing it all and letting it grow in again, we were waiting on FDOT approval,” Kaleta said. “The permits were received, and that was clearly all we are waiting on.” Kaleta said that six of nine lots have sold. Completed home prices range from just under $3 million to $5.9 million. Residences will range from 2,800 square feet to 5,000 square feet and include private swimming pools, driveways and garages. Three of the homes will be located directly on the Gulf, although each home will have Gulf views and access.

Nine Colony Beach & Tennis Resort unit owners and the Colony Beach & Tennis Association are asking the 12th Judicial Circuit Court to stay Colony Lender LLC’s lawsuits against unit owners. Association attorney Jeffrey Warren filed the motion Oct. 22, asking the court to put Colony Lender’s lawsuits on hold until a bankruptcy judge rules whether Colony Lender has the right to pursue action against unit owners for damages related to a disputed recreational facilities lease. The suits, filed in October against unit owners, seek $4,594,276.40 for accrued unpaid rent plus interest on the lease for the period of Oct. 29, 2008 through Aug. 15, 2014, plus $525,244.82 in unpaid real estate taxes, interest, and attorney fees. The association argues that Colony Lender owns a 95% interest in the land but not the lease on 2.3 acres of recreational property at the shuttered resort and that the Florida Legislature made such leases illegal in 1975. Colony Lender purchased overdue bank loans on resort property controlled by longtime Colony owner Dr. Murray “Murf” Klauber, including an 80% interest in loans on the 2.3-acre recreational property, plus a 15% interest in the same property. It received a judgment of more than $14.3 million in a foreclosure trial last September, which increased by several hundred thousand dollars as interest accrued each month. It placed the winning bid of $15,200,001 in a July auction to become 95% owner of the recreational property. Meanwhile, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge K. Rodney May is expected to rule Nov. 12, on a motion Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Trustee Douglas Menchise filed seeking sanctions against Colony Lender LLC for its assertions that it controls the recreational facilities lease. “The state lawsuit should have never been filed, and it is a violation of the stay that was imposed by the bankruptcy court,” said Colony association President Jay Yablon. “In our view, it is sanctionable.” Warren has stated in court that he believes there are several millions of dollars in damages stemming from Colony Lender’s actions. Colony Lender insists that there was no stay in effect. Colony Lender LLC principal David Siegal said the motion has “no merit.” “It’s a bizarre argument to say that a bank forecloses on a mortgage on a piece of property and the tenant contends that the former owner is still the landlord,” he said. Siegal said Colony Lender will file its response to the motion later this week.

SHORE THING

5A

by David Conway | Observer Staff

Candidates sound off on renourishment The Lido Key Residents Association expressed the need for shoreline renourishment at a Sarasota County Commission candidate forum Saturday. Candidates drew different lines in the sand, but urged patience as a proposal is reviewed. At the Lido Key Residents Association’s forum for Sarasota County Commission candidates, one topic was of particular interest to the audience: a proposed project to renourish critically eroded portions of the Lido shoreline. The project, backed by the Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Sarasota, is an issue of note for the candidates for two reasons: One, the plan would take sand from Big Pass — which has never been dredged. This has drawn concern from Siesta Key residents. Two, the project would place a groin, designed to slow the erosion of the shoreline, on county-owned land along the south of Lido Key. Currently, the county plans to conduct a third-party review of the Army Corps proposal, and it contributed to a shortterm renourishment of the Lido shoreline scheduled for later this year. On Saturday, county commission candidates shared their views on the Army Corps project and other related issues:

DISTRICT 2

Paul Caragiulo (R)

Attended an Army Corps meeting on the Lido renourishment plan: Yes

ly is exactly the way we should be working here. It’s a big deal, and it took some pictures that aren’t very attractive pictures to show people what we’re dealing with on Lido. This is our earth here; this is where we are. You have to keep communication open.”

Alexandra Coe (NPA)

Attended an Army Corps meeting on the Lido renourishment plan: No On her experience with renourishment: “This is one of those issues where it’s important to have people who understand science on the County Commission. I have a very personal relationship with beach renourishment. I own a lot in Englewood where we went through the same thing. The project has turned out very well. They did it in stages and it really has had very little negative impact. There are a lot of successful examples of how to do it right.”

Pete Theisen (WriteIn)

Attended an Army Corps meeting on the Lido renourishment plan: No

On hastening the renourishment project: “I don’t really know what we can do to speed it up. I do know we have to stay on top of it. I think the collaboration that’s been occurring with the city and county recent-

sand.’ I would advocate drawing a line in the sand and saying this is how much sand we need. When it comes past the line, you add more sand. As long as it’s out there — well, it’s out there.” On the dredging of Big Pass: “I like the idea of taking it out of the pass, because it makes the pass more passable.”

DISTRICT 4

Al Maio (R)

Attended an Army Corps meeting on the Lido renourishment plan: Yes On how to move forward with the project: “First of all, you need your beaches restored. That’s critical; that must happen. That’s part of your culture, part of your ownership, part of our lifestyle and that needs to happen. It’s a slow process, and that can be extremely annoying. People on Siesta say time again they have no intention of hurting anyone here — the conflict arises in how do you go about doing this? You need to go slowly.”

come up with a justification for building the groins and for taking the sand out of Big Pass. I totally disagree. I’ve lived here in Sarasota County for the past 33 years. You cannot predict what each storm is going to do to the erosion of the beaches and the private property in Sarasota County… I don’t agree with the conclusions that came from that model and that study. My experience with nature is that you don’t fight nature.”

Ray Porter (D)

Attended an Army Corps meeting on the Lido renourishment plan: No

John Minder (NPA)

On the proposed Army Corps project: “This needs to happen. Clearly, we’re at a critical stage — the beach is vanishing…Early indications are that there aren’t impacts on Siesta Key. Areas of (Siesta) Key that used to be eroded are now enormous. It’s done very well.”

On his opposition to the renourishment project: “As a registered professional engineer, I’ve got a lot of concerns about the Army Corps. I think they will

On the dredging of Big Pass: “At this point in time, I would definitely support using the Big Pass sand. The peer review is necessary, but we have too much at stake here. It’s an enormous loss if we don’t do something soon here.”

The new Longboat Key chapter seeks to honor the sacrifices of those who serve and their family members in a Veterans Day parade and program. The 2010 census found that Longboat Key had 1,476 veterans, representing 22.1% of its population 18 years and older. Yet despite the fact that nearly one quarter of residents have served their country, the Key hasn’t had a regular, islandwide Veterans Day event. That’s something the new Rotary Club of Longboat Key plans to change. The Rotary Club will hold its first Veterans Day Parade and Recognition Program at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 11, on Bay Isles Road, ending at Temple Beth Israel, 567 Bay Isles Road. A program inside the temple will follow the parade, honoring veterans and their family members and survivors who live, work or worship on Longboat Key. “When one member of the family goes into the military service, they all go into the service in one way or another,” said Rotary Club President Sydelle Pittas. Approximately 60 veterans have signed up to participate in the parade. The Rotary Club is also seeking owners of convertibles to drive a veteran or survivor of a veteran in the quartermile parade. The Longboat Key Town Commission approved the Rotary Club’s request to close Bay Isles Road from 4 to 5 p.m. Nov. 11. Mayor Jim Brown and Commissioner Phill Younger are among the veterans who plan to participate. The route will follow the same path as the Longboat Key Freedom Fest parade that takes place each year on the Fourth of July. The Rotary Club participated in Freedom Fest earlier this year by sponsoring the “Hot Diggity Dog Parade.” “We were just delighted with our doggy parade on the Fourth of July,” Pittas said. “That just put the idea of a parade in our heads as we were thinking about what types of service projects to get into that would get people involved on the Key.”

PARADE PARTICIPATION Those who served in the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard or National Guard in times of war or peace, and their family members and survivors who live, work or worship on the Key are invited to participate in the parade. The public is invited to line the roadway for the parade, attend the service and enjoy light refreshments. To participate in the parade, contact Marine Corps veteran Nick Kovalakides at nkovalakides@ aol.com or veteran paratrooper Philippe Koenig at 487-7328. To drive a veteran or survivor in the parade, contact Sydelle Pittas at sydellelaw@aol.com. Other Rotary Club projects have included sponsoring Mote Marine Laboratory’s visit to a kindergarten classroom at Tuttle Elementary School in Sarasota; working with All Faiths Food Bank’s Campaign Against Summer Hunger; adopting a room at Selah Freedom House in Sarasota; and exploring the feasibility of a dog park on the Key.

Final thoughts before Nov. 4 If you’re in to politics and political campaigns, you probably have a good sense of the heightened, emotional epinephrine coursing through the campaigns of Sarasota County’s two school board candidates, Ken Marsh and Bridget Ziegler (see “The ugliest race,” on this page last week). They’re good people. It’s unfortunate others around them have made their race as contentious as it has become. As we pointed out last week, the weapon of choice — for both sides, as it turns out — is email. Each campaign has accused the other of having its supporters engage in either illegal or school board prohibited use of the Sarasota County schools’ employee email system (see Ken Marsh’s letter on page 9). Here’s the deal: State law prohibits public employees from using his or her “official authority or influence” in a campaign. That would include sending political emails on the government email system. State law also prohibits such activity while a public employee is on the public clock. What’s more, the school system’s policy manual, under a heading entitled, “Appropriate use of email,” prohibits using the school system’s email for “mail that may be perceived as harassment, political campaigning or commercial solicitation.” In contrast, there are no statutes that prohibit outside organizations or people from sending political (or otherwise) emails to public employees through the government-operated email system. This is what Ziegler’s campaign has been doing. And as such, it prompted this email from Barry Dubin, executive director of the Sarasota Classified/Teachers Association, the union. See the accompanying box. The email from Christian Ziegler, husband of candidate Bridget Ziegler, urged Sarasota County school employees to vote for his wife and included a copy of our Oct. 23 editorial. The email was legal. Some of those sent by school employees have not been legal. Dubin, nonetheless, made a point. The Ziegler campaign would have taken the higher road had it not used the school system’s email addresses. Legal is one thing. Perception is another. Politics is ugly.

+ Hillary and the pie test

First: “You didn’t build that …” Now comes: “Don’t let anybody tell you that raising the minimum wage will kill jobs. They always say that … My husband gave working families a raise in the 1990s. I voted to raise the minimum wage, and guess what? Millions of jobs were created or paid better, and more families were more secure… “And don’t let anybody tell you that, you know, it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs…” And she wants to be president? Here’s a test for Mrs. Clinton: Eight people are sitting at the table. In front of them is a pie. It’s cut into eight pieces. Everyone gets a piece. Now those same eight people are sitting at the table. In front of them is a pie that is cut into six larger pieces. Who loses? Who doesn’t get a piece? Hillary Clinton and everyone else advocating raising the minimum wage ignore facts in favor of feelings. We’ll cite a few facts, but first consider this simple economic principle: When prices rise, consumers typically buy less. Yet advocates of higher minimum wages think that the government can raise the price of labor without reducing the amount of labor that will be hired.

ELECTION 2014 ‘HYPOCRISY’? On Oct 27, 2014, at 11:17 AM, DUBIN BARRY <BARRY.DUBIN@ sarasotacountyschools.net> wrote: Matt, here is your editorial being sent to the school board members’ secretary at her work e-mail address. How ironic is that, is hypocritical a better word? The content of your endorsement knocks us for communicating with our members in spite of our reimbursing the district for all costs incurred, whereas it is OK for him to annoy and distract people while at work with impunity? Gee, I wonder how he got her school board work address? Barry Dubin Executive Director Sarasota Classified/Teachers Association From: Marshall Zoe <Zoe.Marshall@ sarasotacountyschools.net<mailto:Zoe. From: Christian Ziegler [mailto:christian@christiangop.com] Sent: Saturday, October 25, 2014 9:10 AM To: Marshall Zoe Subject: *****POSSIBLE SPAM*****Observer Newspaper Recommends: Ziegler Marshall -My wife is running for the Sarasota County School Board for two simple reasons … Now consider these facts from noted economist Thomas Sowell: “Unemployment rates have been very much lower in places and times when there were no minimum wage laws. “Switzerland is one of the few modern nations without a minimum wage law. In 2003, The Economist reported: ‘Switzerland’s unemployment neared a five-year high of 3.9% in February.’ In February of this year, Switzerland’s unemployment rate was 3.1%. A recent issue of The Economist showed Switzerland’s unemployment rate at 2.1%. “Most Americans today have never seen unemployment rates that low. However, there was a time when there was no federal minimum wage law in the United States. The last time was during the Coolidge administration, when the annual unemployment rate got as low as 1.8%. When Hong Kong was a British colony, it had no minimum wage law. In 1991, its unemployment rate was under 2% … “In the United States, the last year in which the black unemployment rate was lower than the white unemployment rate — 1930 — was also the last year when there was no federal minimum wage law. “In 1948, the unemployment rate of black 16-year-old and 17-year-old males was 9.4%. This was a fraction of what it would become in even the most prosperous years from 1958 on, as the minimum wage was raised repeatedly to keep up with inflation.” Hillary Clinton is completely disingenuous when she tries to make you believe raising the minimum wage does not kill jobs. Someone always loses — the people who can least afford it. She needs to take the pie test.

+ St. Armands Park: Buy it

The new Sarasota ordinance governing events in St. Armands Circle Park should not be the last word. Be sure of this: The residents who live around the Circle are not satisfied. In surveys, 85% of respondents said residents should have a say in events permitted in the park; 92% say City Hall should not be the sole decision maker on park events. “Residents should have the final say over what takes place in their own backyard,” said Ed Rosenblum, a member of a new residents group, Citizens Organized to Protect St. Armands. Here’s the answer: Buy the park, or lease it, from the city. St. Armands merchants and residents should form a not-for-profit corporation, create a board with equal representation and then buy the property from the city. And part of that deal should include a reduction in property taxes to account for what the city spends on the park each year. This isn’t far-fetched. New York City is already a model of success for this. Who will take the lead?

+ Mote Marine re-set

Timing is everything, so says the cliché. Mote’s timing was off when it approached the Sarasota City Commission for an endorsement of an aquarium near the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. We don’t know what went on behind the scenes, but often in matters like these, the party seeking the favor tries to line up its votes in advance. If it cannot secure them, it delays the process to avoid embarrassment or rejection. It looks like Mote’s strategy now is to align itself with the Bayfront 2020 process, while at the same time continue to operate where it is — and send out tentacles to entice developers that it can be an anchor on the privately owned Quay property. Now that makes sense.

LETTERS TO THEEDITOR + Compare the records

Dear Editor: I have always respected The Observer as a bastion of conservative thought whose views on financial matters I often agree with. That’s why I cannot help but believe The Observer did not know the full story of this school board race when it chose last week to reverse its earlier dual endorsement of both my opponent and me. On the measure of financial responsibility alone, The Observer as the area’s fiscal watchdog should be endorsing candidates based on their proven ability to save taxpayer dollars — not on whether they might “challenge the status quo,” which is really my opponent’s only valid claim to run for office. My career includes 20 years of successful grant-writing and saving taxpayer dollars. I’ve helped our schools save hundreds of thousands of dollars, in many areas of operations. I, and many voters, would have assumed this fact alone would be The Observer’s top priority — let alone my 40 years of experience working hand-in-hand with both parents and teachers to serve students of all kinds and ages. Which leads to the next curiosity about The Observer’s endorsement: Why would such a distinguished publication, with such a history of guarding the public

interest, endorse my opponent, a candidate whose campaign is setting a record for the greatest invasion of “dark money” in our school board’s history? Tens of thousands of dollars are being poured into my opponent’s campaign anonymously through PACs and limited liability corporations. This is exactly the kind of shady influence that has been decried nationwide as harmful to our political system. Every single donor to my campaign is public record. Any voter can learn every detail about who is funding my campaign and how that money is being used. The same cannot be said of my opponent and her campaign. Some of those advocating the strongest for her election will never be known to voters. That is wrong — and in my book, reason enough alone to vote for me Nov. 4. These are our children, after all. Even if experience and the invasion of “dark money” into our schools don’t raise enough eyebrows at The Observer’s surprise endorsement reversal last week, there is that oft-repeated question of whether I am receiving undue support from the teachers union, or from my supporters’ overzealous use of the taxpayerfunded school district email system. I am among the most avid supporters of ethical practices among school district employees, as my co-workers over the past 20 years can and do attest. While I welcome everyone’s avid support, I share taxpayers’ concerns that school district employees keep politics out of their workday. But why is The Observer not equally concerned — if not more so — about questions now raised regarding possible abuse of district email by my opponent

herself? My opponent is alleged to have sent fundraising emails to school district employees during the workday. Given the power she wields over these very employees’ jobs, my opponent’s overzealous use of district email is far more egregious than what has been alleged against my supporters. I am also not ashamed of receiving $2,000 in total donations from our local teachers’ union — especially when compared to the tens of thousands of secret special-interest dollars being spent on behalf of my opponent. Nor am I ashamed that some sitting school board members — many of whom I’ve frequently disagreed with during my two-decade Sarasota County Schools career — recognize I am by far the more experienced, qualified and trustworthy candidate on the School Board ballot Nov. 4. In closing, I simply encourage voters: Don’t listen to me. Don’t listen to The Observer. Compare me with my opponent on any and all measures relevant to the education of our students and their futures. I am confident you will arrive at the best possible decision. If you have any further questions, reach out to me at Ken Marsh Direct: 941-586-9526. I sincerely ask for your vote Nov. 4. Ken Marsh Candidate Sarasota County School Board Editor’s note: Regarding alleged email violations by candidate Bridget Ziegler, state law permits candidates to send emails to public employees’ email addresses but prohibits public employees from sending political emails on public

+ Amendment 2 is wrong Dear Editor: The use of medical marijuana deserves a chance. It has not been evaluated according to FDA standards, likely because of cultural and legal concerns, but there is enough anecdotal evidence that it relieves debilitating conditions to give it a try. The challenge, of course, is to ensure its use is controlled by appropriate safeguards. As a starting point, nothing that is smoked can be considered safe. It isn’t the THC in cannabis or the nicotine in tobacco that is the worst problem. It’s the carbon monoxide and partially burned carbon compounds that are dangerous. The risk of these particles, usually referred to as tars, isn’t a recent finding. The occupation most exposed to tars exposed its toxicity in England during the 1600s. They were chimney sweeps. Smoking marijuana for whatever purpose does not pass the medical test of “first do no harm.” To be at all safe, it must be delivered as a pill or liquid. I don’t think that is what its proponents of Amendment 2 have in mind. When medical marijuana requires a physician’s script and it is dispensed as a medication by CVS, then I will be on board. Until then, I will take a pass. I hope the Legislature can act promptly on a comprehensive medical-marijuana bill that will give relief to people as intended. He also develops weekend fitness activities for children in his neighborhood. His Fitness Forever practice includes a like-minded, well credentialed partner, Chaz Mirtolooi. Bickel and Brizdle got together about five years ago. The trainer then also worked with her late husband, Larry Schoenberg, known for his indefatigable spirit, legendary love of knowledge and passion for its transference and development via illustrated manuscripts. Since her husband’s death, Brizdle says her training sessions “keep me going.” Brizdle comes honestly to her enthusiasm for an active lifestyle. Her father was an athlete — an all-star basketball player — and she has always done sports as well. She was a tree-climbing tomboy as a little girl and a canoeing enthusiast as a teen. “I was a platinum canoeist at age 16 and taught it at camp,” she said. Today, at 71, she puts that skill set to work on her paddleboard; she maneuvers it with impressive ease all the while doing wonders for her balance, strength and endurance and — here it comes again — having fun.

FROM SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH TO CLINICAL APPLICATION

Oct. 17. Born Jan. 12, 1935, in Norfolk, Neb., Mr. Johnson received a basketball scholarship to the University of Colorado in Boulder. There he fell in love with Mary Lou, whom he married in 1958. He joined Kappa Sigma, earned his bachelor’s degree in 1957 and was a proud member of the 1956 University of Colorado basketball team that went to the Final Four Championship. In 1958, Mr. Johnson became a regular commissioned officer as a lieutenant and pilot in the Air Force. He rose to the rank of captain in 1963. Mr. Johnson’s business career began in 1963, after he completed Travelers Insurance School. The Johnsons moved to Edina, Minn., where Mr. Johnson started his own insurance business, Valley View Insurance, specializing in commercial, casualty, property, life and health insurance. Mr. Johnson received advanced training and earned his chartered property casualty underwriter (CPCU) and certified financial consultant (CFC) certifications. His motto was, “No account is too large to handle.” Mr. Johnson enjoyed family, friends, tennis, golf, fishing and boating. He and Mrs. Johnson loved yearly travels to France and Italy, where they shopped for antiques. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; daughters Jacque Fryklund and Debra Booden; son, Jeff Johnson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services are planned for Jan. 12 in Sarasota and for the spring in Brainerd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the American Cancer Society, cancer. org, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Oliver Haskard, 95, of Longboat Key, died Oct. 10. Born May 24, 1919, in Lancastershire, England, Mr. Haskard attended Eton College, followed by Cambridge University. He trained with the Royal Horse Guard and went into World War II as a captain in British intelligence. After the war, Mr. Haskard worked the land as a farmer and developed a love of nature through the animals he cared for and the beauty of the land that he worked. He opened a garden center not far from the farm offering a vast assortment of plants including grafts and hybrids of his own liking. He had two children, Victoria and Doria, during his first marriage. After his first marriage ended, Mr. Haskard took passage on a small Greek ship bound for the island of Patmos. On the deck of the ship, Mr. Haskard met his soulmate, Grace Haskard. After moving to the United States, their love of books led them to become owners of the Tempest Book Shop in Waitsfield, Vt., where they worked side by side every day for many years. Their love for Tempest stayed in the family when their son, Rick Rayfield, took over the store, which he runs to this day. Mr. Haskard had a great interest in the arts and literature and could carry a conversation on practically any subject. He is remembered as the type of person more interested in having a discourse rather than winning it and as a person of the greatest character, who, with all his knowledge, remained humble and always looking out for humanity.

JAZZ Drummer Al Hixon provided a swinging celebration of music as part of the Longboat Key Center for the Arts’ sixth annual Ageless Creativity series. The Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design, resembled a jazz club Oct. 23, during an Ageless Creativity concert and reception. The performance featured drummer Al Hixon, one of six recipients of the Arts Center’s sixth annual Ageless Creativity awards. Hixon has played the

drums since he was in seventh grade and is the founder of the Al Hixon Jazz Group. After receiving the award, Hixon joined band mates Billy Marcus and Jim Wellen to perform for the packed crowd. (Bassist John Lamb arrived late to the concert.) Vocalist June Garber joined the group for the performance as well.

Garden Club gets photo tour of Arctic Circle Approximately 50 Longboat Key Garden Club members got to explore Siberia and the Arctic Circle thanks to images by local photographer Lou Newman. The Garden Club met Oct. 21, at the Windward Bay condo clubhouse, for its first meeting of the 2014-15 season. Newman presented members with a slideshow of his adventure into the chilly Arctic Circle last year, during which he came face to face with a few polar bears and walruses. He explained the impact of the receding ice caps on the polar bear population. Members also got an update on the Garden Club’s Nov. 14 field trip to the State College of Florida, in Bradenton, where the club will see an exhibit about wedding attire and its significance since the 19th century.

ust on the outskirts of downtown Sarasota, there exists a dense jungle. However, this rainforest is rich with creativity and humanity instead of exotic wildlife and giant plants (though it does have its fair share of foreign Banyan trees). The Ringling Complex, the combined canopy of The Ringling, FSU Performing Arts Center and the New College of Florida, houses and produces

an abundance of classic art, circus artifacts, new works of theater and ballet, foreign architecture and gardens galore. But living within this wilderness lives a strong collective that feeds off this ecosystem of creative raw materials: the FSU/ Asolo Conservatory. Formally titled the Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, the conservatory is a competi-

tive, three-year, master’s of fine arts acting program that ranks among the top 10 programs in the country and in the top 25 in the English-speaking world. Each incoming class consists of 12 students — just small enough for the faculty and staff to mold and elevate each individual performer, but also just large enough to create a sense of camaraderie and collaboration. After a three-year gauntlet

of learning and performing, the students earn a degree and their Actors’ Equity Association card. “The conservatory combines academia and graduate-level training that is professionally based,” says Greg Leaming, director of the conservatory and associate artistic director of Asolo Repertory Theatre. “This is not an academic institution per se. We’re not training teachers; we’re training artists.”

The tribe of thespians is as eclectic in taste, temperament and creative energy as the conservatory’s upcoming season. The conservatory’s season opens with David Mamet’s rarely produced play, “The Water Engine,” running from Nov. 4 through Nov. 23. The remainder of this year’s productions are William Shakespeare’s cross-dressing comedy “As You Like It;” the fairly new musical Duette Vertiglide®Shades

During his decades-long career, he has had work exhibited at the Lincoln Center’s Cork Gallery as well as in Chicago, Atlanta, Louisville, Ky., Washington, D.C., Boca Raton, Tampa and Palm Beach. “When people look at my work, I can only ask that they feel something personal for themselves,” says Forgard. “If I can produce something that has a little bit different emotion, feeling or concept, I can only ask that of someone, and maybe somebody who’s sitting next to them won’t feel anything at all.”

at several Chicago design and advertising studios. Forgard’s combination of art and business acumen led to an instructor position at the Ringing College of Art and Design. Having lived, worked and taught in the Sarasota area for more than 25 years, Forgard draws inspiration from a local muse: the everyday existence. Shades and shadows of human lines and figures live in his canvases in diverse hues. His works provide a snapshot of life on busy streets or quiet cafés as if captured through the soft-focus lens of a camera. Forgard uses several paints and oils and adds raw materials for extra texture. “Everything I see inspires me,” says Forgard. “I’m a visual person, and as I walk through the city or do anything in my life, I’m always absorbing visual stimuli to get me started.” Even though he has resided and taught in Sarasota, Forgard does not let his stable geographic location stifle his techniques or cause his art to become static. “The process of being an artist is constantly moving on,” says Forgard. “You’re discovering technique through concepts, through experimentation, through mistakes.” And one continuing source of inspiration is different artists, new and old masters. Artists whom Forgard has connected with throughout his career include Francis Bacon, Edgar Degas, Wolf Kahn and, most recently, Gustav Klimt. “Figure Flow of Life” contains visual echoes of the late 19th century Austrian painter, known for

“Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?” asks narrator Edward French at the beginning of “The Secret Garden.” One would think that the Sarasota Ballet couldn’t top its world premiere of Will Tuckett’s “The Secret Garden” in August, but this garden certainly grew to new heights. Opening its 24th season, the Sarasota Ballet performed the “The Secret Garden” flawlessly. This production that includes dance, theater and puppetry, has the dancers working full-time — not only dancing — but also as the crew performing scene changes of the gates and walls on wheels and the puppetry, as well. The wheeled walls were magical as they transformed the stage from the secret garden to the various rooms of the hallowed Craven Mansion. The puppetry is still a standout feature of this creative masterpiece that is set to music by Jeremy Holland-Smith. The dancers are not concealed behind their respective puppets, but almost merge as one with their animals, using graceful moments to bring the crow, robin and fox puppets to life. Calvin Farias and Patrick Ward were once again experts as the fox puppeteers, not missing a single moment — even mimicking the fox panting while waiting for the next scene. Jessica Cohen delighted as Mary Planwho to starts attend our Lennox, off as a petulant orphan but blossoms into a happy, loved young girl surrounded by friends and a new family. The Sarasota Ballet opened its season with Will Tuckett’s “The Secret Garden.” Jamie Carter, Kate Honea and Ricki Bertoni are ever adept at character roles, so much so that Bertoni was recently promoted to Character Principal. Carter was perfect in portraying the melancholy Mr. Craven. Honea stomped around the mansion as the mean Mrs. Medlock. And Bertoni performed as Ben Weatherstaff with a permanent scowl on his face. Two new dancers to the company made their debut on Friday night: Michael Burfield and Kyle Hiyoshi. Both displayed immense talent and ability. Burfield was buoyant and quick on his feet as Dickon, and Hiyoshi jumped with fervor and might as the bad Dr. Webster. Sara Scherer lead the female servants, Kristianne Kleine, Sareen Tchekmedyian, Dagny Hanrahan and Ellen Overstreet, with a sunny demeanor that seems to glow across the entire stage. Tchekmedyian was sharp and strong and danced with a very nice style. At the end of the ballet French states: “Garden is Love.” I think it’s safe to say, we love “The Secret Garden.” — Anna Dearing

SAFE SEX HALLOWEEN BASH

‘MIDNIGHT ON THE BAYOU’ Benefiting: Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida • Saturday, Oct. 25, at Michael’s On East by Heather Merriman | Black Tie Editor

Safe Sex Halloween Bash: the spookiest event of the season, infamous for attracting the most creative, over-the-top costumes for Halloween in all of Sarasota. This year’s theme “Midnight on the Bayou” was a New Orleans-inspired late-night kiki. It was decorated with such intenseness that after a few signature “Bayou Banshee” cocktails, guests surely thought they were in the murky swamplands of haunted ‘Nola. Picture this: hosts in voodoo-inspired costumes greeting you at the ghoulish entrance, fire breathers to your left, and a swamp and creaky wooden dock to your right, leading you into the ballroom where you find burlesque dancers, an undead DJ, candy bar, unlimited drinks and hors d’oeuvres. The truly daring could hang outside with a live alligator named Jack and an alligator snapping turtle named Big Teeth.

HOW THE COUPLE MET

Matthew Eyerly Gilbert and Elyse Margaret Huss met at Rollins College when Matt was about to graduate and Elyse was finishing her second year. Shortly after meeting, Matt graduated and they stayed in touch over the summer because of their mutual connection to Longboat Key/ Anna Maria Island. Elyse grew up on Anna Maria and knew that Matt’s family owned a home on Longboat (the houses are only eight miles apart). Elyse started her third year of school and needed a date to her sorority formal, and while she knew it was a long shot, she asked Matt. He immediately booked his flight. After the formal on Nov. 20, 2010, the flights didn’t stop. Matt told Elyse that he was planning a fun weekend, but wouldn’t tell her anything else. On Dec. 29, 2012, Matt took her to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, a place they visited on Elyse’s first visit to Philadelphia. The couple visited Elyse’s favorite exhibit last, and Matt wanted to take a picture in front of her favorite Degas statue. He asked a stranger to take it, however, he actually asked him to videotape everything. The newly engaged couple walked outside, and Elyse was shocked to see so many family members and friends waiting on the steps. The couple enjoyed the evening celebrating with all who traveled to witness the big moment.

The ceremony took place May 31 at Palmetto Riverside Bed & Breakfast with the reception following at the Manatee Riverhouse. The couple recalls the weather as a fun memory from the wedding — a rainbow appeared right before the rehearsal dinner and the rain held off just long enough to make it through the ceremony. Thunder actually boomed as the bride walked down the aisle, which gave everyone a good laugh. The bride and wedding planner Nicole Kaney transformed the venue for a classic, timeless and elegant look, using the couple’s colors of navy and ivory. The card box and the box they used during their ceremony to seal love letters and champagne for their 10-year anniversary were both handmade by the bride’s dad. He used the pecky cypress he had leftover from her childhood home that he had built.
