SEASON

A+E EDITOR’S PICKS

27TH ANNUAL SARASOTA FILM FESTIVAL

When: April 4-13

Where: Various locations

Tickets: TBD; festival passes $180-$1,500

Visit: SarasotaFilmFestival.com

Details are always sparse until the last minute, but mark your calendars now for the 27th annual Sarasota Film Festival. You can thank us later. Among film festivals, Sarasota may not have the prestige of New York, the pedigree of Cannes or the edginess (and snow) of Sundance. What it does have, like the Toronto International Film Festival, is accessibility, plus its own laid-back vibe. You never know who you might find scanning tickets at the door or dancing poolside at a festival soiree.

ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG: A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

When: March 1 through June 29

Where: The Ringling Museum of Art Tickets: Free with $30 admission (Mondays free)

Visit: Ringling.org.

This Ringling Museum exhibit celebrates the centennial of Robert Rauschenberg’s birth and explores his impact on 20th century art. By incorporating mundane objects and combining painting and sculpture, Rauschenberg paved the way for Pop Art. The Ringling presents works from its collection, including Rauschenberg’s photographs from “Studies for Chinese Summerhall” and the textile “Hoarfrosts.”

‘MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL’

When: March 18-23

Where: Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

Tickets: $70-$125

Visit: VanWezel.org.

Not every theatrical adaptation of a hit film is a success, but “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” swept audiences off their feet — and the Tony Awards. The story told in the eye-popping Baz Luhrmann film set in Belle Epoque Paris remains the same — boy meets the wrong girl. Can love bloom between a bohemian writer and chorus girl at a nightclub in Montmartre? Yes, it can-can. But like flowers, some romances only last a season.

SARASOTA ORCHESTRA: ‘THE PLANETS’

When: March 7-9

Where: Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

Tickets: $39-$105

Visit: SarasotaOrchestra.org.

As the Sarasota Orchestra searched for a new music director from 2022-24, Peter Oundjian helped plan programming, audition musicians and conduct performances. Giancarlo Guerrero has been named music director designate, but Sarasota audiences can still enjoy a concert led by Oundjian. A Canadian violinist who is former music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Oundjian will conduct Masterworks: The Planets featuring the iconic composition by Holst. Grace Park is the guest violinist.

‘JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR’

When: May 14 to June 15

Where: Asolo Repertory Theatre

Tickets: $35-$80

Visit: AsoloRep.org.

This is the granddaddy of all rock operas. “Hair” came first, but Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” created the genre. We can safely say Asolo Repertory Theatre’s production of “JCS” will be a sensation when it opens at FSU Center for the Performing Arts in May. Why? Anything directed by Josh Rhodes (“Cabaret,” “Evita” and “The Sound of Music”) is bound to get people asking, “What’s the buzz?”

SARASOTA PERFORMING ARTS FOUNDATION GALA

Benefiting: SPAF

When: March 21

Where: Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

Tickets: $1,500

Visit

PerformingArtsFoundation.org.

If last season’s theme de jour was masquerade, this year’s is Moulin Rouge. But the SPAF is offering the real thing by pairing “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” as the performance sandwiched between dinner and an afterparty. Settle in for a glamorous and show-stopping evening.

BLUE TIES AND BUTTERFLIES

Benefiting: Child Protection Center

When: April 4

Where: The RitzCarlton, Sarasota Tickets: $325 Visit CPCSarasota. org.

Enjoy an elegant night out at The Ritz while supporting the heartwrenching mission of helping survivors of child abuse. This year marks CPC’s 45th anniversary, which will be celebrated with dinner, music, dancing and live and silent auctions, all to benefit the worthy cause.

POPS SUPPER CLUB

Benefiting: Sarasota Orchestra

When: April 16

Where: The Ora Tickets: $350 Visit SarasotaOrchestra. org.

With many events repeating year after year, we love a changeup. The Sarasota Orchestra is offering something different for its annual gala with a Pops Supper Club theme. In addition to some standout cocktails and dinner, the gala features a special pops performance by the orchestra performing songs by Marvin Hamlisch and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
