RESEARCH INTO THE PRINT AND DIGITAL INDUSTRY What Solent Press aims to teach us: Solent Press aims to provide us with hands-on professional content creation and layout development experience, in order to best prepare us for the industry. In the unit Solent Press gave us the opportunity to write content for both print and online publications/websites for industry clients across the country. In this unit I hoped to build my professional portfolio and I strongly believe that this unit has helped me build my confidence and my connections within the industry. Print vs Digital: Publishing is the process of production and the activity of making information available to the general public. The advances of digital in the 21st century has largely impacted the way the magazine publishing industry operates. In order to retain circulation and attract new audiences, the publishing industry have had to keep up with the increase in online competition by offering their audiences strong editorial content worthy paying for. According to Price Waterhouse Cooper, the industry has seen a fall in circulation figures and a decline in advertising revenues – regional press and magazine advertising revenue is down by 22% and online advertising revenue has increased by 38%. With the increase in digital publishing can print be a sustainable? It can be argued print can anchor a brand and define the voice which is often more successful than intended. There is permanence of print attached to print publications however, print magazines are declining. Digital offers reader’s journalism on a 24-hour news cycle, this makes it harder for print publications to compete with this kind of fast paced news. Digital has also seen the rise in citizen journalism which makes it harder for print publications to compete with interactive video footage obtained from bystanders. Citizen journalists pose a threat to the industry as without formal training, these individuals can potentially post information which can get them into legal trouble. Skills needed for a journalist entering the industry in 2016: • • • • • • • • • • • •

The iconic magazine has been around for 67 years and has a list of awards including The NME Awards/Shows & Tour which is attended by some 215,000 music fans annually. NME alternative distributions NME has a list of alternative media distributions all of which increase its brand visibility. Currently the magazine is available on a range of multiplatform services including tablet, phone and desktop. Other methods of promoting the NME name include NME Awards, NME Tour and NME tent at Reading Festival. Why I would suit NME Magazine? I believe that NME would suit my skills and expertise because of my strong interest in music. Now that it has become a freemium publication, I read the magazine more frequently and have a deeper understanding of their new approach to creating content for NME. Furthermore, I have an industry contact who previously worked at NME and the university.

JOBS IN TIME INC Here are the list of jobs I could apply for once I have finished university. The jobs include a Sub-Editor role for NME, Digital internship and a general job as a staff writer. These are all obtainable jobs in the industry which I could apply for given the skills I have learnt both in university as a whole and in Solent Press.

JOBS IN BAUER Here are the list of jobs I could apply for once I have finished university. The jobs include a picture researcher, a writer and work experience opportunities. Unfortuantely with Bauer, job roles are not advertised on their website. This could imply they don’t advertise as they seek freelancer writers and look for people to reach out to them with feature ideas. Alternatively if I do not want to approach Bauer as a freelance journalist, I could apply for work experience with one of their publications seek work experience students. The work experience opportunities are advertised on GoThinkBig.

FREELANCING Not all jobs are advertised on the publishing companies website. In order to get my foot in the door to make myself known within the industry, I may have to look at earning a living by working freelance. Throughout the unit we have been freelancing our work to clients and this has prepared me for the nature of the profression. Freelancing is a professional which can be used in my desired field of Marketing. I have undertaken the IP Tutor test which will benefit my career as it applies to all creative industries. IP (intellectual property) protects creations of the mind. IP Tutor is an online test which allows you to gain a certificate showing that you understand patents, trade marks, design and copyright. This accredited course by the IPO is beneficial towards my career as it has allowed me to gain a skill that is valued by employers and if I were to be self employed, this course would furthermore benefit myself. When working in a creative industry, IP will allow me to protect my works including: written journalistic pieces and creative outputs i.e video. The IP qualification is beneficial especially if I were to go freelance as it shows I have an understanding in protecting both my work and the work of the company I freelance with. The image below is my certificate to certify that I completed the IP Tutor training course.

BLOGGERS For journalists, blogging is the essential starting point in their career; it is a self-made work experience. Blogging is vital for a freelance journalist and should sit alongside their portfolio as a reflection of their writing. By creating a blog and updating it regularly, I am able to practise my writing and be experimental with the content I produce. Through blogging, I am able to find my voice and find my speciality subject by projecting my opinions and articles to an audience. If my blogging is interesting enough to engage an audience and creates a buzz, editors who read it regularly will approach me with work.

What separates Milkbubbletea to other bloggers is the use of photography. Using just her iPhone, the blogger is able to capture her day-to-day life using various editing software’s to emphasise the white in her images. All her images are edited the using the same technique which creates consistency makes her blog/social media look clean and minimalistic.

RESEARCH APPS THAT WILL ENHANCE MY PUBLISHING AND MARKETING PROFILE Traditional print methods of journalism have had to adapt in recent years in order to compete with the rising trend of digital publishing. In today’s age, social media has enabled journalists to react quicker to the latest news and rising trends through apps and other inventions. Wunderlust is the essential notetaker an app which allows you to organise and share your to-do work with others. The app also allows you to set due dates, share lists with others, work on the go from your mobile and leave comments on your to do list. Wunderlust is a great outlet for me to store my to-do lists using my mobile phone. The use of having Wunderlust on my phone means I am able to edit and send my to-do lists to work colleagues while on the go. Social media is transforming the way journalists break news and publish stories, in particular Twitter. According to statistics newsrooms are now 30% smaller than in 2000 and with the slow decline of print, digital is slowly becoming more prominent. Twitter can enhance my career as I can report news stories as they happen on a platform available to an audience around the world. Furthermore, Twitter can be used to find interviewees - it is a tactic journalists use within the industry. Using the hashtag #journorequest to appeal to interviewees will help me gather interviews quickly and effectively. WordPress is an online, open source website creation tool which is the most powerful blogging and website CMS (content management system) in existence. WordPress will benefit my career because it will enable me to have a professional blogging site where I can customise the code which will be fully functional on mobile and website applications. WordPress is also SEO friendly which means my blog posts will be attractive to search engines. By having good SEO means my blog posts will have a higher chance of being looked at therefore promoting my name which will provide me with work.

Voice Record Pro allows you to record voice memos and an unlimited length. Many journalists record telephone interviews for easier transcription as they can replay the interview multiple times. Voice Record Pro is perfect for recording interviews and because it is available on my iPhone I can take it everywhere with me.

According to eBiz, Facebook receives 1,100,000,000 unique monthly visitors making it the top social media site. Facebook is a good place to start marketing yourself as you are able to upload personal information clients might find useful when trying to make contact. Using Facebook you can also share links to your profile page which can be promotional materials e.g. your Linkedin, your latest campaign or your website etc. Lastly, with Facebook I am able to create pages that relate to my field. This could be creating events or creating business pages for people to keep up-to-date with what’s going on in your business and a place to upload professional works. As print publishing changes, the industry has sought out alternative ways to engage readers using digital devices. One innovate idea is augmented reality which combines realworld elements e.g. magazine pages and these pages are supplemented by a computer-generated sensory input i.e sound, video, or graphics. One magazine which has embraced augmented reality is Stylist Magazine who use it in their adverts promoting the music identifying app Shazam. I feel this tool will be beneficial to my career because it is a relatively new invention and I strongly believe it will take off and change how reader will interact with traditional print methods.

SELF MARKETING Website One of the key ways to market yourself is by having your own website. By creating a website with a tailor made domain, implies to prospective clients that you are a professional in your field. I have recently created a website using a template on Wix, which is clean and minimalistic. Using subheadings of ‘portfolio’, ‘photography’, ‘about’ and ‘contact’ makes navigation for potential clients clear. The website is also a platform where I can exhibit my personality through my creative CV, design, and imagery shown on the website. Twitter

Marketing your skills and yourself on the Internet is now easier than ever. A 140-character tweet can bring you closer to getting your foot in the door in getting your dream job. When marketing myself on the Internet requires extreme precaution as I will be transparent to future employers. With many employers choosing to Google search names in search engines, how I project myself on the Internet is crucial. In order to market myself successfully I need to consider the following: having a professional headshot, using an appropriate header/background and making sure my tweets are relevant to my career/shows of my personality in a suitable manner. Linkedin According to TechCrunch Linkedin has 187 million unique visitors per month. It is the industry standard when it comes to marketing yourself professionally. In the summary description I can market myself by reinforcing my achievements and summarising my credentials. In this section I can include words and phrases that highlight my talents Eg. Copywriting and Sub-Editing. Linkedin is the direct, accessible channels of communication where I am able to network and uncover new opportunities via the search tool. Business card A business cards are a highly personalised form of marketing. Unlike a website or social media account which can get lost in translation, business cards can create a solid first impression which enhances your credibility and legitimacy. If I create business cards I am able to market my brand and they can become an essential mobile marketing tool which could establish and maintain new clients for future business.

PROFESSIONAL RESEARCH Throughout the Solent Press unit, I have completed a list of work which I can now include to my portfolio. Solent Press has given me the transferable skills to network with individuals in the industry and use teamwork to achieve a successful end result. With many of the projects I completed throughout Solent Press being a live brief, I have enabled myself to push towards completing a final end result for the clients. Clients I have produced work for include: Sky, Archant, Mainline Menswear, OnTheScene and WestQuay.

ONTHESCENE OnTheScene: OnTheScene’s follower count: 1

OnTheScene is Southampton’s online student magazine. Content published on the online is written by students and can range from topics including: Gaming, Living, Music, Sport and Entertainment. Journalistically, OnTheScene predominately writes content in the style of features, interviews and listicles.

Tweepi is a social media management which helps you analyse and manage Twitter followers effectively. Here I have compared WessexScene and OnTheSceneSoton. Using Tweepi, you can analyse the followers by location, last tweeted, followers count and follow ratio.

Similar websites: Buzzfeed produces daily content syndicated in the form of lists, vidoes and quizzes. Majority of its traffic is received from social media sites i.e Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. As the content produced is in the form of lists written in a colloquial tone of voice, I feel OnTheScene’s most similar website is Buzzfeed. Another similar website to OnTheScene is WessexScene which written by students of the University of Southampton. The website brings users the latest breaking news, features and opinions but on a broader scale in comparison to OnTheScene who focuses on Southampton only. Using Tweepi.com I compared the audience for both Wessex and OnTheScene and found majority of OnTheScene’s followers were from the Southampton area whereas WessexScene’s followers were from across the globe.

Idea generating: As OnTheScene writes content in the style of listicles, I wanted to stick to this style of writing for the publication. I began to brainstorm ideas that would generate SEO for OnTheScene. At the time of writing, the new year had just begun and people were starting to embark on their new year’s resolutions. With this in mind, I wanted to write content which would be evergreen and could be used all year round. Known as veganuary, individuals across the globe make it their mission to reduce the suffering of animals by going vegan in the month of January. With the rise of veganism year on year and Southampton being home to an array of wholefood stores and cafes, what better content than a listicle of the ‘5 must visit vegan cafes in Southampton’.

Archant is a family owned media company serving geographical and specialist interest communities across a wide range of media. With over 80 titles in their portfolio, Archant are the largest publisher of regional and local lifestyle magazines with magazine titles in East Anglia, London and Kent. Archant also owns a range of specialist magazines circulating in the UK and USA. The brief set for Archant was to detail the best places to eat, stay and suggest things to do for visitors for each county or area with a word count of between 500-1,000 words.

Here I have compared Archant and National Trust. Using Tweepi, you can analyse the followers by location, last tweeted, followers count and follow ratio. From analysing the followers of both publications, National Trust have a larger following on Twitter (567,450) whereas Archant Digital have 3,129.

Similar publications: A similar magazine to the Archant publications is the National Trust Magazine. Currently, National Trust is the highest circulation publication in the UK with a readership of 4 million (ABC 2,100,485). The magazine is similar to Archant as it focuses on areas of the UK which are part of the National Trust area and has similar editorial pillars which include: Seasonal View, Bulletin, From You, Trust on screen, For you: Shopping, For you: Get the look, For you: Books, For you: Puzzles and A drink with.

Idea generating: With regards to Archant, idea generating was relatively straight forward. Archant provided us with the feature ideas. The difficulties I faced when writing this feature was writing about an area of the country I’ve never been to or visited. Thorough research was required to write this feature and sites used to research included the Essex City Council, Trip Advisor and the Archant website. Using Archant’s website allowed me to gain a deeper understand the tone of voice needed to fit the magazine and its reader demographic.

Mainline Menswear is an independent men’s online fashion retailer. They pride themselves on being one of the largest and most comprehensive ranges of men’s designer clothing online whilst providing fashion and trends to suit men of all ages and every budget. Brands stocked at Mainline Menswear include: Barbour, Clavin Klein, Carhartt and Fred Perry. The fashion retailer approached the university with a live brief aimed at promoting their blog. Blog posts could be written about brands, trends, news, opinion, lifestyle and sport.

Here I have compared Mainline Menswear and Brown Bag Clothing. Using Tweepi, you can analyse the followers by location, last tweeted, followers count and follow ratio. From analysing the followers of both publications, Mainline Menswear have a larger following on Twitter (6,240) whereas BrownBagClothing have 1,975.

Similar publications:

Brown Bag clothing is an online retailer who specialise in providing an exclusive range of men’s discount designer clothing and footwear. Currently they stock clothing brands such as Armani, Lacoste, Fred Perry and Penguin. Brown Bag clothing is similar website to Mainline Menswear as they also have a blog. Blog posts written on Brown Bag clothing includes sport, fashion, music, travel and culture. Eg “Vinyl Revival: A Guide For Beginners” and “Celebrity Look For Less: Tinie Tempah”.

Idea generating: Mainline Menswear brief was to create a 250-500-word post which would be considered evergreen content – something that could be forever readable with a preferably a brand focus. With this in mind, I researched what brands Mainline Menswear stock on their website. I wanted to pick a brand which I was passionate about and had a good understanding. I felt Fred Perry was the best suited brand to write about as they were perfect for both summer and winter. My blog post was called ‘Fred Perry – The British Fashion Icon’ which connoted brand focus and showed an understanding for the ranges Mainline Menswear stock and what their audience cares about. As part of their style guide, the fashion retailer wanted headings to summaries the blog posts as shown in my feature I have used “Who was Fred Perry?” and “Origins of Fred Perry” etc. Furthermore, this feature included calls to action such as “Go for the Fred Perry Contract Collar Polo t-shirt” which was a hyperlink making the feature interactive with the website and promoting the Fred Perry range. With the next feature, Mainline Menswear prepared an excel sheet with potential feature ideas. My next feature was named ‘How to re-wax a Barbour jacket?’ Mainline Menswear wanted the feature needed to be brand focused. In order to write the feature, I needed to thoroughly research the Barbour brand. As the brief was to write about how to care for a wax jacket, I decided to use headlines to breakdown the text with headings like ‘Clean and prep the jacket’ and ‘Apply the wax’.

WestQuay is Southampton’s biggest shopping centre which is home to around 150 shops including leading retailers John Lewis, Apple, Hollister and Zara. Leading up to the Christmas period, the shopping centre increases its publicity by advertising to the local region via radio and TV. With this in consideration, WestQuay approached the university with a live brief to create a magazine in time for Christmas. The magazine should include editorial pillars of Mother & Baby, Beauty, Fashion, Food, Home and Technology. WestQuay and Southampton Solent University has a strong bond with external companies and through the quality of work the students have produced year on year has enabled the shopping centre to continue to work closely with the university.

Similar publications: A similar magazine idea is the in-house magazine for John Lewis, Edition. The magazine has both a digital and a print edition which is free. Editorial pillars within the magazine includes: Women’s Fashion, Men’s Fashion, Technology, Culture, Beauty, Travel, Wellbeing and Home. Edition promotes the new items available at John Lewis, top tips and interviews with notable celebrities.

Idea generating: At the beginning of the project, I was quick to get involved due to my experience with other projects similar to this one. From units such as Multiplatform Publishing in Level 6 and Magazine Production in Level 5, I was the Art Director of the magazines which both achieved an overall grade of a First. I felt because of this, my skills were best placed in the design of the magazine as opposed to the written content. In the early stages of design, I took inspiration from magazines such as Cosmopolitan Edit and Marie Claire but after trial and error, I decided that a clean and minimalist look would be best suited for a free magazine with a mixed demographic.

Sky’s parent company is New Corporation who is an multinational mass media corporation who also owns 21st Century Fox. News Corporation and Sky are owned by Rupert Murdoch a media proprietor.

What was my role at Sky: My role at Sky was a Marketing Assistant in the NowTV Acquisition’s department. NowTV is a streaming system which allows users to watch TV, Movies and Sport without signing up to a Sky contract. NowTV can be used on multiple devices or through the NowTV box and costs £6.99 a month as opposed to the more premium Sky packages. During my placement I worked in the Acquisitions team which handles driving NowTV’s customer growth. As a Marketing Assistant I: •Independently liaised with legal team to set vital grounds for the DRTV (Direct Response) advert to go ahead. •Used her creative flair in a group to collaboratively architect the perfect new colour scheme for NowTV. •Undertook research to provide insight into competitors. •Responsible for the final outcome of the Christmas DM (Direct Marketing). This included amending the body copy text and sourcing images directly from TV production companies. •Worked with Sky Creative and Sky Works as a middleman, to help produce the Sky Sports banner on SkySports.com and the NowTV adverts for British newspapers across the UK. •Attended meetings with external companies (ENGINE and Mediacom) and allocated responsibilities and actions due for each person/company for the following week.

Content produced: The content I produced involved subediting the body copy of text for the NowTV DM. Furthermore, I was also involved with choosing the NowTV colour scheme for the Christmas DM. This included changing the colour of the baubles from purple to green, the body copy from purple to black and making sure the icons were more prominent.

ARCHANT BRIEF

These articles should detail the best places to eat, stay and suggest things to do for locals and visitors to each county or area [500-1,000 words] Deadline: See full details here >> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zfsNGZecpDjGX8KYoLU7jJ_7DWNL NVZkzY4agSaKxU0/edit?usp=sharing Headline: As per above document Standfirst: It should summarise the article in one or two sentences. Please do not try to be too creative with puns / play on words – the standfirst should instead contain plenty of important keywords relevant to the topic to help search engines find the article. [maximum 50 words] Intro: A brief introduction to the topic. It should again contain keywords but should not repeat the standfirst. [50100 words] Body: • Up to 20 points of interest where plenty are available, though typically anything over 8 is acceptable (eg. 10 of the best afternoon teas in X). • Each place featured should be approx 50-80 words and include a description of the restaurant/ place / thing to do, plus pick out any specific highlights e.g. Don’t miss trying the Honey Bear cocktail in the newly refurbished bar. • The tone should be neutral and factual – we can’t recommend things we haven’t experienced first hand – although reviews can be referred to/ quoted. •

Use sites such as Trip Advisor to help research which places to include.

Please hyperlink text to websites for all places included in the feature.

• Also search the website of the brand you are working for to see if there is existing content you can link to throughout the content. We suggest at least 3 links per article. For example, you may mention a pub in a village we have already written a guide for. You would link the village name in your copy to the existing article. Images and video: 1 x image or video per point in your article. If you are unable to source an image for each point, put those points without images at the bottom of the article. Use Creative Commons (CC) sites to source and include image details (these should be reference as ‘photographer, image name, which site it is from, CC license’ eg. John Smith, ‘A bridge over the river’ via Flickr CC BY 2.0). Geograph / Flickr / Google Images / Wikipedia all host some CC images. NB: It is very important that you have the licence or rights to use images online. Do not guess. If you are unsure, please call the photographer / business to ask if you can use the photo. If you are still unsure, do not use the photo. Photo claims get very expensive!! If you can not find a high quality image which you have the rights to use, then YouTube videos (not vimeo), Instagram images and Twitter images are a good alternative. If you would like to include one of these, please include a link in your submission to the video or image online. Please show where each image is meant to go in the copy of your article. Do not embed the images onto your Word document – instead attach them to your email. All image files should be appropriately named.

MAINLINE MENSWEAR BRIEF

MAINLINE MENSWEAR How to re-wax a Barbour jacket? The iconic Barbour wax jacket has been protecting generations of men from the wind and rain for over a hundred years. This classic and versatile jacket is a staple item of clothing in any man’s wardrobe. With care and regular waxing, a wax jacket will remain with you for a lifetime and never show its age. With these easy to follow steps, we have come up with the essential step-by-step guide on how to bring back your tried wax jacket to life. Clean and prep the jacket Before waxing the jacket, make sure to clean the jacket as best you can with ice cold water and a sponge. It is important not to use soaps, solvents and abrasive scrubs or a washing machine to clean your wax jacket as this ruins the material and strips the waterproof coating permanently. Apply the wax With a tin of wax, stand it in hot water for approximately 20 minutes until it melts clear. Use the pieces of a cut up cotton t-shirt to work the wax in a circular motion into the jacket. Ensure to wipe off any excess wax and try to keep the colour of the jacket consistent. Heat the applied wax Quickly blend any dark patches that appear as you apply the wax. Play close attention to steams, collars, creases and areas of heavy use. Ensure shoulder and upper arms are waxed thoroughly as these are areas which will take the worst of the rain. Dry and wipe To get an extra smooth finish, blow over with a hair dryer to smooth out the application of the wax. Once rewaxed, hang the jacket in a warm place away from any other garments to dry overnight. Place newspaper underneath the jacket, this will catch the excess wax. Wear it After re-waxed, your jacket is ready to wear for another season. It is recommended to re-wax your jacket at least once a year in order to keep you dry all year round.

TRANSCRIPT OF WORK Fred Perry - The British fashion icon Fred Perry has always been at the heart of Britain’s fashion, often associated with British subcultures and a uniform for music. The brand’s laurel wreath is one of the most instantly recognised logos in the world. But how did Fred Perry become the symbol for British fashion? Who was Fred Perry? Fred Perry was one of the most iconic British tennis players of the 1930s. He was the British equivalent to Rodger Federer of his day and was the first player to win Wimbledon three times in a row. Origins of Fred Perry The sweat band was first product to launch the Fred Perry clothing line in the 1940s. A keen sportsman, Perry was a pipe smoker and was keen to use a pipe as the logo for Fred Perry. Business partner and football player, Tibby Wenger suggested a pipe would turn off female fans and instead they decided on the laurel wreath to represent Fred Perry. The duo went on to create the slim-fitting, knitted cotton pique shirts in the crisp white traditional dress code of tennis. They launched the first pique shirt at Wimbledon in 1952 and it was an immediate success. Subculture Since the launch of Fred Perry clothing over 60 years ago, the brand has had a series of British subculture relationships. From Teddy Boys in the 1950s via Mods, Rockers, Punks, Skinheads, Rude Boys and to Britpoppers in the late 1990s, the brand has seen all subcultures rock the Fred Perry look in various styles. Fred Perry’s popularity amongst subcultures decades on, has enabled the brand to enter the mainstream market. The clothing like has seen famous faces sporting the Fred Perry look, from the Gallagher brothers to Paul Weller they have all been seen wearing the British icon. The clothes have ensured Perry’s cultural importance in today’s society and is a constant reminder of his contribution to the sport and in the fashion world. How to wear Fred Perry? The British style of informal, yet dressed up provides an easy way to look smart and casual for any occasion. Go for the Fred Perry Contract Collar Polo T-shirt with a pair of denim jeans in order to gain a smart-casual style, suitable for any event. Fred Perry is a timeless look and is always looking for ways to collaborate with notable sports figures. Fred Perry’s eight collection with seven-time Olympic medallist, Bradley Wiggins continues to rework classic Fred Perry outlines inspired by vintage cycling wear. The collection is a twist on the classic polo shirt, with bomber shoulders. Alternatively, if the vintage style isn’t up your street, dress a Fred Perry classic Oxford shirt with a sharp Italian suit. Today, the first Fred Perry polo, the classic 1952 cotton pique shirt, is still one of Fred Perry’s bestsellers. The fashion icon will continue to provide men with a great modern edge style that never stands still long enough to look its age.

PORTFOLIO OF WORK

My Personal Development Plan (PDP) will help me after my time at university. By thinking through my skills and experiences and acting upon them will help my own understanding as I enter the industry of where I need to go from here. Furthermore, my PDP will increase my self-awareness, identify my skills and experiences I have and hope to achieve and keep a record of milestones I hope to achieve over the next 5 years. In this PDP I will discuss my timeframes from 6 months to 5 years.

MY SKILLS Camera/audio Since coming to university I have built upon my camera and audio skills that I learnt from college. Studying A-level Photography and Media Studies taught me the basic fundamentals of using camera and audio equipment. Today journalists have to be accustomed to independently using audio and camera equipment for when they are out in the field interviewing. By learning how to use camera and audio equipment to a professional standard through university, means that when I enter industry I am proficient with equipment supplied. Video editing During the university trip to New York in 2015, I decided to filmed my trip out there. When I came back I edited the video using a range of Adobe software including Lightroom and Premier Pro. From learning the skills independently, I can now edit video on industry programmes outside of the standard installed programmes i.e. iMovie and Windows Movie Maker. Video editing is an important skill as it makes content creative which increases user interactivity. Audio editing Journalists today are expected to be multitalented and work independently. In one of my units during my time at university allowed me to experiment with audio editing. Using the programme audacity, allows journalists to cut, copy and paste recordings. Audio editing is an essential skill for a journalist out on the field who is looking to publish recordings of interviews or vox pops. Written and verbal communication Coming from a communication based degree has vastly improved my written and verbal communication skills. The nature of the degree of meeting new people and interviewing strangers has impacted the way I interact with individuals. The ability to speak appropriately to a wide variety of people while maintaining eye contact, demonstrate a varied vocabulary, tailor my language to certain audiences and work well in a group using good communication skills are traits employers seek in a candidate. By developing these communication and verbal skills will help all aspects of my life, both professional and social. Social media Being fortunate to grow up surrounded by the increase in social media has meant I have been exposed to new social media outlets and trends. The impact of social media has opened up new career paths in the industry. Skills needed to have a career in social media includes: listening, pattern recognition, visual thinking, statistical analysis, public speaking and improvisation. From my work experience with Sky and units at university, I have developed these skills to a professional standard.

SKILLS LEARNT IN SOLENT PRESS Keywords: SEO keywords are phrases in web content that make it possible for people to find your site via search engines. Using keywords in titles, URL’s, image file paths and anchor texts need to be considered when increasing optimising a page or post. When using WordPress for OnTheScene, keywords were essential for driving traffic to posts. Using keywords is an essential skill that I can use in the marketing industry as I can learn which terms and phrases are popular when attracting a target audience. Content Creation: Content creation is the contribution of information to any media – especially to digital media for end-user and audience in specific contexts. Working in the Acquisitions department with Sky (NowTV) utilised my content creation skills. As NowTV is a new department, content creation is essential when building a brand as it not only creates an awareness for NowTV but there is longer customer retention with successful customer creation.

Content Marketing: Content marketing is to attract and retain customer by consistently creating relevant and valuable content with the intention of changing or enhancing customer behaviour. By writing articles for Mainline Menswear’s blog their customers will remain loyal as they are producing content which is valuable to their customers i.e. my feature ‘How to: Re-wax a Barbour jacket’. According to UK Marketo, 78% of companies use article posting and 79% use social media to increase their content marketing. Click-bait journalism Clickbait journalism is web content aimed at generating online advertising revenue at the expense of relying on eye-catching thumbnails or headlines. For OnTheScene I wrote ‘Top 5 vegan restaurants in Southampton’ this headline attracts audiences as they have to click the article to find out the information on what restaurants are in the top 5. Copywriting Copywriting is written content conveyed through online media and print materials. Copy is a content primarily used for the purpose of advertising or marketing. This type of written material is often used to persuade a person or group as well as raise brand awareness. Majority of the content I produced on the unit has been from online forms of media. Skills needed to have a career in Copywriting include: Writing, research, interview, edit, proofread, manage project and source images. These are all skills that I have demonstrated on the unit – in particular the Archant project as we had to proofread each others work, edit our own pieces and research thoroughly using online tools i.e. Tripadvisor. Project Management Project management is the application of processes, methods, knowledge, skills and experience to achieve the project objectives. Throughout the WestQuay magazine brief, I showed my project management skills and led a team of 18.

SWOT ANALYSIS OF MYSELF Personal development is an essential step for making myself more appealing to employers. SWOT analysis can help my personal progress by assessing my Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

Strengths

Weaknesses

One of my strengths is that I understand my learning style. Following my test on Education Planner, I found out I am an 30% visual, 10% tactical and 60% auditory. As my highest score was for auditory learning, it means I learn best through hearing and listening. In journalism, key skills include listening and hearing in order to conduct and transcribe interviews. Reading out loud is one of the ways auditory learners learn best, this means proof reading is a job that comes out of being an auditory learner. By reading out loud means I will be more sensitised towards mistakes and typos.

My weakness is that I haven’t done a degree in the industry I wish to go into. Other candidates who are also trying to get a job in PR and Marketing will most likely come from a degree in that field.

I have valuable work experience behind me in the Marketing field which means I have an advantage over other candidates.

I have weak mathematical skills and due to picking A-Levels and degree which did not touch upon mathematics. A career in PR and Marketing requires knowledge of mathematics and other technical knowledge. Presenting is one of my weak points, I’m bad at public speaking and this could impact future career presentations with clients.

Through my degree I have learnt transferable skills which will benefit my career in the Marketing and PR industry. Skills include: Communication, team work, IT skills and commercial awareness.

Opportunities

Threats

Suitable job vacancies available for coming up in the PR and Marketing industry. Using online job searches, I can find a job that will suit my skills and help get my foot in the door with relevant industry contacts.

Being against other students who have also just graduated.

Most places where I want to work are in London which is close to where I live.

Can be quite shy at times which may hold me back when

I am able to drive so I can travel almost anywhere in the UK. I am able to enroll in CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) Marketing training and gain a qualification.

Worrying I will not be good enough to enter the industry. attending group interviews.

12 MONTHS I HOPE TO... Aims To graduate with a 2:1

Actions Construct a professional and creative CV

Why

Learn how to write a successful cover letter

Alongside my CV, I want to develop my skills in writing a successful cover letter. When writing a cover letter I must ensure that it sets myself apart from the competition and making sure it leaves a lasting impression. It is said to increase my chances of success, my cover letter should be: concise, include contact details, relate to my skills to the job advert, targets the company and avoids jargon. With this in mind, I would need to make sure my use of language is appropriate for employers and avoids formal clichĂŠs. I have learnt in depth about language in Solent Press by the various range of articles I have produced through Archant and OnTheScene Magazine. For Archant I had to adopt a formal tone of voice to fit the target audience, whereas for OnTheScene I was able to use a colloquial tone of voice as the target audience was a younger demographic.

Network with industry contacts

Build up a professional portfolio

By constructing a professional CV implies to prospective employers that I am no longer at student level but an industry professional seeking an entry-level position. In order to construct a professional CV, I need to ensure my proof reading and editing skills are up to scratch. The extensive editing and proof reading exercise undertaken in the Solent Press unit has provided me with the understanding of how important editing/proof reading is to applications. It is crucial to remember grammar and spelling are influential to the success of my CV. My experience as a Feature Writer for Archant developed my editing and proof reading skills as I undertook reading classmates work as well as my own. By participating in a Feature Writer and Sub-Editor role, ensured that there was always a high quality of work produced for the client.

In a bid to prepare myself for industry, I need to network with industry contacts before embarking on my chosen career path. Through Solent Press, I have been able to network with senior staff members such as Jayne Kemp who has industry contacts with TimeInc and Miles Kendall who worked for Bauer Media. Furthermore, from my valuable internships at Sky and DK Books, I have been able to build up my networks in the Marketing sector. Alongside my CV, I hope to build up my professional portfolio to show future employers the work I can produce if they hire me. In order to build my portfolio, I need to continue to blog and apply for work experience. I have learnt about the importance of blogging from Solent Press as I was part of the blogging team writing content for fashion retailer, Mainline Menswear. The blogging skills I have learnt from Solent Press will help me create new ideas for blog posts and articles for my portfolio and website (http://alexlouise6.wix. com/alexandrawalker).
