Create your signature style Buying the dress tends to be the first major wedding purchase. Try these priceless tips on keeping your budget tight but your eyes wide open when shopping for your wedding dress. • Stay clear of merchants that don’t have a permanent local address and phone number. You may never see your dress after the initial deposit is cashed. • Try your dress on in front of a full length, three-way mirror with the correct shoes. If you buy the dress in the wrong size or shape, alterations could end up costing more that the dress! • Ask your local salon about “safe bridal bargains” available at their store. Many times it is possible to buy sample gowns off the rack at the sale price. 10

What you wear under your wedding gown is just as important as your dress. Properly fitting lingerie will help you feel and look great all day long. Once you’ve found the perfect gown, it’s important to visit a reputable lingerie shop with trained staff who can correctly determine the right undergarments for your particular style of dress. If you can, bring a photo of your wedding dress with you. Purchase intimate apparel before your first fitting so you can wear it when it’s time to try on and alter your dress. Take advantage of this special time in your life to take a look at some non-essential items as well. Bra and panty sets, nightgowns, and camisoles can make you feel beautiful and sensuous. What better time is there for you to splurge on yourself than now? Many lingerie shops now offer gift registries. Take advantage of this and let your friends and relatives know you’re registered. They’ll enjoy buying you these items as much as you’ll enjoy receiving them!

Color Your Day Find the perfect palette
From the invitations to the cake to the flowers, your color palette can create a cohesive look to your wedding day. When picking colors, think about: 1. Your favorite color combinations! Using colors that appeal to you already will help the day feel like you. 2. The location. Having a wedding in a chic hotel? Perhaps metallics will suit the location. Going rustic in a beautiful barn? Try a more muted color palette of soft greens and pinks, like above. 3. The season. Seasons lend themselves nicely to certain colors. Rich reds, grays and dark blues scream winter while bright pinks and purples compliment a summer wedding. For inspiration, look for the color palettes featured in our Real Weddings section, on pages 50, 86, 99, and 104.

Event Planning & Invitations Your invitation selection lets guests into what kind of wedding you are planning. Whether it’s modern, traditional or romantic, your invitation extends a first and lasting impression of your wedding style. An event planner keeps track of your wedding plans by attending appointments, handling communications from vendors, securing deposits and contracts, arranging transportation and hotel blocks, designing timeline documents, and more. Along with expert advice, your event planner also has a large resource of professionals

to recommend and might even help negotiate better rates for you. A “day-of” coordinator calls all of your vendors during the week of the wedding to verify everything. Coordinating the rehearsal and ceremony, assisting the photographer, supervising vendors and handling any problems are all important in creating a cohesive event. The wedding cake is a tradition all by itself. Often, they are the focal centerpiece of the reception. Bakers are artists that can create a visual treat that is as elaborate or as traditionally simple as you choose. Your baker can help you by suggesting ideas that will draw together all of your wedding details to create a breathtaking cake. When visiting with potential bakers, take time to look through their portfolios, and share photos and ideas of cake designs you have in mind. Sampling several cake flavors may be helpful. Selecting your baker and ordering your cake several months in advance is important. 47

REAL WEDDINGS
For Sarah and Matthew’s August wedding, it was important to
involve the most important things in their life—faith, family, and friends. Everything about their day incorporated these values. Their wedding theme—that God makes all things new—was incorporated from the very beginning with their invitations, and reflected in the heartfelt ceremony with friends sharing stories of how much Sarah & Matthew have been renewed by faith.

Jewelry & Gifts The bling!
Rings have long been considered an unbroken symbol of eternal love. The gift of an engagement ring often signals the desire to begin a new journey together, followed by the exchange of wedding bands by the bride and groom in the ceremony that confirms their commitment to share their future hopes and dreams. While wedding bands are gifts shared solely by the bride and groom, beautifully wrapped gifts ranging from practical to precious selected with care by family and friends also play an important part in 58
launching the newlyweds into their new life together. Bridal registry makes it onestop shopping and solves the potential problem of duplicates and the hassles of returns and exchanges. Since gifts have expanded far beyond the basics of china and crystal to restaurant gift certificates, garden centers and even honeymoon accounts, online shops work with hundreds of different retailers in a single registry. Whether it’s a beautiful love song or a fun party favorite, it’s time to get you and your guests dancing. Don’t forget to spend some time picking out the perfect song for your first dance, and double check that your DJ or live band can play it. Have you thought about passing a notebook around the reception so guests can doodle a special message to the couple? Another fun idea is to present a slideshow at the beginning of the reception of fun photos throughout the years. 65

You rely on family and friends to assist you on your wedding day, but when it comes to photography, it takes a great professional to preserve your big day. Do your research. Choose a photographer whose work you have seen and admired. Ask friends for recommendations. Forming a comfortable working relationship with your photographer is important. This person is going to spend a lot of time with the two of you. This is no time to by shy; ask lots of questions: How many posed shots? How many candid? Should the formal photos of the wedding party be taken before or after the ceremony? Are the albums and folder included in the price? When will the photographer leave the reception? 74

I want to show you just how beautiful your love is.
We have many first steps in our lives. Our actual first steps. Our first day at school. Our first day at work. And most importantly, our first steps we take together as a married couple. As a photographer, I put myself into the shoes of the couple as they take these first steps together to capture their truest & most genuine emotions. Photography should be about capturing the beauty that already exists. Each couple is unique, from the faces you make, to the way he smiles at you. Let me capture your love story, the way it should be told.

REAL WEDDINGS
REAL WEDDINGS
ashley + blake
Blake and I got engaged
on November 21st, 2014 after a romantic date night at 801 Chophouse, and of course, I said yes right away. A fall wedding has always been my dream so we set the date for November 2015 and jumped right into the planning process. At our family Christmas celebration my mom, sister and I dug her dress out of storage. I knew right away that I wanted to wear her dress but needed to make some alterations to the 1970’s style cathedral gown. To trust someone to deconstruct and restyle the fragile lace dress was not easy for us, but when we met Faythe at Dornink we knew we were in good hands. Once we had the dress in the works we began to focus on the other details of our big day. The bridesmaid’s picked out simple plum dresses that went well with the gray and burnt orange tuxes worn by the groomsmen. We selected the Hilton Garden Inn in West Des Moines for our reception to accommodate our out of town guests and for the modern décor and color scheme that went perfectly with our fall colors. Our florist, Originals by Beck, crafted center pieces and floral arrangements that complemented the reception hall and tied in our plum and burnt orange wedding colors. 95
REAL WEDDINGS
On the morning of the big day, the bridal party enjoyed mimosa’s and a relaxing morning being styled by Art of Life Salon. We exchanged our vows at St. Francis of Assisi and headed off in an Iowa Hawkeyes bus to celebrate with our wedding party and take advantage of the picturesque fall day. DeJong Photography led us to most breathtaking fall backgrounds and captured stunning images that we will cherish forever, from the engagement session to the big day Dejong photography’s professional expertise and advice helped to create our perfect wedding day. The staff at the Hilton Garden Inn helped the reception run smoothly and on time while All Sounds Mobile Entertainment kept the dance floor packed and played the perfect songs for every moment of our reception. The champagne colored cake by Hy-Vee bakery accented our heirloom cake topper that was first used by Blake’s grandparents in their wedding 60 years earlier. Our wedding style was something old meets modern fall elegance, we could not be happier with the way the day went and truly did have our dream wedding. -Ashley 96

Best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Why not get
married? And that is exactly what Eric and Tracey did! The frigid cold weather did not dampen the excitement as this was not only a joining of two but actually of six as Tracey and Eric’s children were also a big part of the celebration. The Scottish Rite was the backdrop for their grand celebration. The day started early at Salon W with hair and makeup. And the getting ready continued in Scottish Rite’s vintage locker room and large bridal suite. Every detail wasn’t overlooked. After the ceremony, everyone moved downstairs into the ballroom, which again was decorated by Christiani’s. The draping, pink accents and bling filled the room. Christiani’s also catered the event with their fine Italian cuisine. The party continued as DJ Cubbie from Select Entertainment kept things moving! It’s important to view sample clips from multiple weddings during your meeting with the potential videographer, as this will help you to determine the quality and style of their work. 107

Start with the right questions. How many guests can be seated comfortably and entertained in the reception area? Make sure there’s enough room for the tables, dance floor, bars and other amenities, plus a little elbow room for the guests. What items are included in the basic room rental? Some places offer only the site, so you may need to rent the amenities. Other places may offer you everything from the silver to the cake. Be sure the inclusions are listed 116
on your estimate, so you don’t have any surprises. What about additional service fees? Typical extras might include cutting your cake, uncorking your furnished champagne, and valet parking. What sort of restrictions are there? You may not be able to set up early or stay late. Candles may be restricted, so ask before you make any final decisions. Joseph and I absolutely loved our
wedding day! Blind photography captured each moment whether sweet or silly in a beautiful way. They created a fun and comfortable environment for us and showed a genuine love for what they do. Our reception was a blast and made complete by our amazing wedding cake by Glorious Desserts and our awesome DJ through BCP Weddings. We would recommend any of our vendors to couples planning their wedding day. One word of advice from us is that at the end of the day you will be married to the love of your life so try not to stress over the small stuff it will all work out!

Professional decorators can handle all the duties themselves, from creating your vision to the clean-up. The best part? It’s a major task you won’t have to worry about. If you have people you can rely on, you may want to handle the decorating yourself. It’s important to remember that you may not have much time to get decorations up and ready. Sometimes it’s hard to find the time to get everything as perfect as you deserve, and you may not have much time to tear down once the ceremony is over. If you go this route, try to think simple and look for decorations that can be prepared ahead of time and easily put into place.

Health & Beauty Blushing bride
There may never be another time in your life as exciting and exhilarating as the months leading up to your wedding. This may also be one of the most stressful times you experience because there are so many details to think about. Although it’s easy to say “relax” it’s not always easy to do. Now more than ever you need to use common sense to keep the anxiety under control and not spend too much effort worrying. Be realistic...every bride has the highest expectations for her wedding day. You may have dreamed about the “perfect wedding” since you were a little girl. Just don’t get so caught up in the dream that you miss out on the fun of the wedding planning. Keep everything in perspective and don’t sweat the small stuff. Pace yourself...planning should be done over a period of time. In the beginning it’s tempting to try to do everything at once, but stick to your schedule and spread the job out so you don’t over do it. 160

Honeymoon & Transportation Old-fashioned romance
No matter where the honeymoon of your dreams is, your vacation of a lifetime is possible when you plan ahead. Do you enjoy taking in museums, watching a breathtaking sunset while resting on a beach, hiking and biking? Think about what you enjoy doing together as you narrow your list of destinations. Airlines and hotels will only make a limited number of reservations, so it is important to make your reservation plans early. This will help you ensure your first
destination choice. Consult with a travel agent to coordinate the many logistics of your travel details. You will be busy making extensive plans for the wedding, so delegate these plans to someone who makes a living scheduling vacations every day. Your final wedding celebration is the honeymoon and the beginning of your life together. Plan ahead and ENJOY! Iowa Marriage Licenses
What you need to know
Congratulations on your engagement and upcoming wedding in Iowa! To make sure you understand the marriage laws and requirements before setting your wedding date, we recommend verifying information with the Recorder’s office. Here are some important details you should know: • You do not have to be a resident of Iowa. Picture identification is required. You also need to provide Social Security information. • Iowa has a three (3) business day waiting period. Please note:
• The fee for a marriage license in Iowa is $35+ and cash only. The fee and acceptance of checks or credit cards varies from county to county. • You need to have one witness (over 18 years of age) with you when you apply for the license. • No other tests are required in Iowa for a marriage license. • You can use any ordained or licensed clergymen or justices of the peace. • An Iowa marriage license application expires after 6 months if you don’t use it.
State and county marriage license requirements often change. The above information is for guidance only and should not be regarded as legal advice. It is important that you verify all information with your local marriage license office or county clerk before making any wedding or travel plans.
