CASSANDRA LIN What do you do when you hear about climate change, clean energy solutions, and residents suffering from cold, harsh winters, while local resources are being wasted and clogging drainage systems? ‘No time to wait!’ said fifth-grader Cassandra Lin, as she combined a few threads for a perfect solution: TurnGrease-Into-Fuel collects used cooking oils for recycling by biofuel companies. This system existed in San Francisco, but it was new to Westerly. So Cassandra and friends distributed thousands of flyers and calendars to restaurants, made TV announcements, presentations, and now … a law! GABRIELLE POSARD watched her sister working on a documentary film when a message got stuck in her mind: 'A quarter of the U.S. Population experiences hunger, yet 40% food produced is wasted.' At 12 years of age, Gabrielle started talking to grocers about donating food that was near its sell-by-date. To alleviate legal liability concerns, Gabrielle explained that President Clinton signed into law the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act, protecting donors. Response has been amazing, impacts immediate. Her network of 4,000 picks up and distributes 20,000 pounds of food every month. "Food drives used to consist of non-perishable foods, low in nutrition. We get foods with short shelf lives like fresh fruits and vegetables. People are so grateful, they get choked up because fresh produce is so expensive." JULIA AND EMMA MOGUS have 1000’s of volunteering hours between them and they love to read. When they learned that First Nation kids in remote fly-in communities of Northern Ontario have no access to any books at all, they remembered the famous quote ‘My ticket out of a life in poverty was reading’. They started Books With No Bounds to collect and buy 1,000’s of new and ‘like new’ books, meet officials, arrange airline transportation, fundraise and pack around the clock. Schools contribute with great enthusiasm. One year later, 18,000 books have been sent to all 49 communities, thank you letters are streaming, the sisters receive gifts in return and are invited to visit the communities. ‘We have only started! MADISON AND RHIANNON were preparing for their Girl Scout Bronze Award, when they discovered a shocking fact. And it was right in time for their favorite treat: Girl Scout cookies! The 11 year old friends were researching the endangered orangutan and found that the production of palm oil contributes to the destruction of the Orang Utans' rainforest habitat. In a powerful online campaign, they mobilized over 70,000 people and generated such broad media coverage that Girl Scouts USA adopted a sustainable palm oil policy for their products as a result. This is a step in the right direction but the girls are not done yet. Madi and Rhiannon are working to start a movement demanding responsible palm oil sources to ensure the protection of the forests, animals, and people of Southeast Asia, South America and Africa.
