Since a major sustainability challenge is to balance out the dominant paradigm focussing on materialistic wealth, I have filled the wealth boxes of a "typical" BERLIN investment banker with a WELL PAID JOB. ECONOMICALLY: Big apartment, car, holiday travel, insurances, all that jazz, maybe even organic food
This model was inspired by the King of Bhutan's Buddhist vision as a government principle to ensure the Happiness of the people of Bhutan the highest aim of the king, as the people's wise servant. The government of Bhutan has found that the depletion of forests and the world falling silent for lack of birds was not worth the money. Instead, they have found that a rich, pristine environment, vibrant cultural life and heritage and widespread spiritual practice mean that only minimal economical wealth is required for HAPPINESS. On the other hand, high economical wealth and low ecological, cultural and spiritual wealth do NOT bring Happiness. GNH is now taught in all schools of Bhutan.
He isn't able to get off on "high) culture level, reciting Shakespeare or Hesse, flying with an orchestra, or even dancing his soul out. He would not dare, stiff as he is. His sensual life is rather mechanical. Contrary to the (folk!) culture of African tribal villagers, everybody going wild and being part, he is just watching, an expensive ticket in his stiff necked shirt. Not much of a rich creative jungle his belly.
SPIRITUALLY: Smart guy, nice and kind, too. But a slave to his boss ECOLOGICALLY: a few plants on the balcony and park and anguished by the idea of not ascending to the top of the career trees. That's poverty, nationwide. This is why our Berlin ladder, or - this is well hidden under the carpet - losing his job? How investment banker takes trips to the Serengeti and Carribean would he keep respect, pay the bills, be awesome towards his wife, beaches. his parents and - actually, his own self-worth? A void! CULTURALLY: Symphony orchestra, theatre, cinema festival, art galleries, original painting at home, sounds awesome... but in fact, our banker can only watch and clap applause to the high end performances of masters up on the pedestal.
Altogether, our investment banker is quite stressed, spends 16 hour a day working and is plagued by fears. The HAPPINESS LEVEL is rather fragile, thin and low.
Some regions of the world already belong more to the left or right model. Be aware that on the right side, men are preying on women at nights. It's also a police state, cancer rates are high, and ecocultural travel holidays do not exist. This is quite present for 30% and more of industrial populations...
Imagine the circle to be countries and regions of the world flowing on the river of time. Towards which future are they steering? Be aware that they influence each other! Which future do you choose to steer to?
To the left? To the right? Somewhere in between? No more cancer,
war and rape, or preferably some left? Less clean water, so stock holders make more money? Keeping war threats alive, so warring industries stay profitable? Some torture, so torturers keep their jobs? I don't know how you think - some people argue this way. Such arguments DO DEFINE the the model that we choose and will automatically steer towards. Nothing is impossible but unless awareness and INTENTIONAL change of course is taken, the mega-current of the past 60 years takes us to the far right.
