One Enfield Community Event Matthew (16) is a member of Bush Hill Park Explorer Scout Unit based in Enfield. He and some of his fellow Scouts from Enfield are organising a community event aimed at bringing all of Enfield’s community groups together as one. As he explains:

“There will be stalls representing the many different community groups in the borough, food and performances from many different cultures and fun events for younger children. So far the event has interest from organisations such as Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, GirlGuiding, Police Cadets, some local restaurants and a number of religious organisations.

“Our involvement in putting this event together came from being part of the Scouts Community Impact Project. This is a national youth-led initiative that gives young people the opportunity to make a difference in their own communities. Here in Enfield we have chosen to boost community cohesion. To do this we have organised the One Enfield community event, 4 July, 2pm to 6pm, at Ponders End Park, Hertford Road, EN3 5BE.

“The project also shows that young people have ambitions to shape Enfield into a better community. The entire project is being organised by young people for young people. It stands to encourage all young people to contribute in making a positive difference in their community.

“Our main aim on the day is to unite all the different community groups within Enfield as one. That is, to create One Enfield so that we can break down divisions that may exist in our community based on social, racial, financial and religious grounds. We hope to bring the whole community together for a day, making them aware of all the people they live with.

As you can see these young individuals have put in a lot of work to get this event together so please do your best to attend the event if you can.

“If you wish to take part in the fun or bring a part of your culture to the party please contact us.”

What if tomorrow is too late? This is the question posed at an event organised by Christian Action Housing (CAH). It follows on from their work with other Enfield partners to reduce the risk of street violence and related crime to young people in Enfield. The audience heard from two leading speakers: Mark Prince, founder of the Kiyan Prince Foundation, and Robyn Travis, author of ‘Prisoner to the streets’. Both spoke passionately about the effect of street crime on them and how they chose to turn their lives around. They use their own experiences to help young people make more positive choices for themselves. It is about making those choices today instead of tomorrow – which is often too late. Comments from participants confirm the event as inspiring, positive and useful: “I’m glad my support worker got me involved. To be honest I didn’t want to go. But hearing Mark and Robyn’s stories was an eye opener and kind of inspiring … and we got to chat with them both after.” (Nathan)

“It was really informative and pretty relevant. It was positive, useful and it should be organized more frequently to be more effective.” (Gareeca) CAH facilitates regular workshops for young people and aims to run this event annually. To find out more about their work visit www.christianaction.org.uk

More about the What if tomorrow is too late? event speakers: Mark Prince: Former Number 1 Boxer in England. Father to Kiyan Prince who died as a result of knife crime. The Kiyan Prince Foundation works with all children and young people regardless of age, race, disability, gender and sexual orientation to increase awareness and address the consequences of gun and knife crime through education, encouraging them to make informed choices and move forwards in a positive way. www.kiyan.org Robyn Travis: His book ‘Prisoner to the streets’ shares his life changing story of street violence in Hackney and Tottenham. Written by the boy who was there when it started, this is the real story of the postcode wars that started in Hackney, E8 – the fights, the stabbings, the shootings.

Promoting Safe Enfield Here is the brilliant bunch of young people and Enfield Council staff who are helping to promote the Council’s Safe Enfield campaign. The two key messages the young people and Council staff will be promoting on behalf of the campaign are: • Whatever your background, Enfield offers pathways to success • Enfield will support you to make the right choice for your future This is being backed up with young people’s stories about how the youth centres and youth workers have helped them reach their goals, succeed in their ambitions and experience positive outcomes. It also points out how ill-considered actions and involvement in crime at a young age can have a potentially devastating impact on later life.

As shown in the advert below if you get a criminal record you could be prevented from travelling to, and experiencing, other countries and cultures such as the USA. So look out for the Safe Enfield campaign posters coming to an area near you very soon and please take notice of what they are telling you.

The Skills for Work Service also offer dedicated courses that prepare you for a job in a specific field such as Hairdressing, Business Administration, ICT, Teaching Assistant or Child Care. It combines opportunities to train, gain qualifications and carry out work placements (including apprenticeships) all rolled into one. Diana was working in retail but wanted to change her career direction to an office based role. She found out about the Skills for Work Business & Administration Programme and signed up. As she explains, this really helped her achieve her goals. “My internet research around what was available in my local area pointed me to Enfield Council’s Skills for Work Service. I was immediately drawn to the Business Administration course. This was a full time course so I knew I would need to give up my current job. I was very pleased that I could continue to get paid through the earn and learn set up associated with the programme. I also liked relating the things in class to the tasks at work.

“The support that came with the programme was amazing. I had a tutor to guide me through the sections of the course and constantly received feedback and advice about how to make improvements. This helped to build my confidence as I progressed through the course. My tutor was also available to talk about any questions that cropped up or about things that may have happened at work and offered advice. “The greatest improvements I have seen in myself are my confidence and my approach to work. I am certainly more organised and focused in what I do. I would definitely recommend this programme to other young people in Enfield to find work. It is the best of both working and training with plenty of support.

Youth Oskars 2015 The Youth Oskars hosted by SE1 United is an annual event that celebrates the achievements of young people across London. It recognises exceptional young people who help change the negative perception that is often held by society about young people. This year three of the twenty London youth groups being nominated were from Enfield. This acknowledged the example set by these young people to their peers and how they have grown into responsible representatives of their communities. Congratulations to the following winners and nominees who collected awards at the entertaining celebration event held at the Southbank Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hall. Reece Hodges was nominated by Enfield Oasis Academy (Enact Youth) and won a leadership award in the creative arts category. Other nominees were Tarik Msaouri and Ferah Ibrahim. Lily-May Bracey was nominated by Enfield Council’s Youth Participation Service and won a leadership award in the Education, Learning and Development category. Another nominee was Jessica Yeates.

Quotes from the winners “Awesome experience. It’s great to see people from different areas celebrating their achievements together. Would definitely want this to happen again!” (Jefferson) “Great night! I felt very valued and it made me feel like all my work is actually appreciated! Being nominated was a pleasure and to actually win an award was an honour!” (Lily-May) “It felt so good to be nominated and knowing that my efforts were appreciated.” (Jess) “It was great fun, a brilliant new experience and a great excuse to dress up.” (Charley)

Look out for Youth Oskars 2016 where Enfield is hoping to get even more nominations and awards.

Jefferson Ocran was nominated by Enfield Council’s Unity Hub and won a positivity and commitment award in the Enterprise, Entrepreneurial Spirit and Project Building category. Other nominees were Kevin Odamtten and Lloyd Obeng-Adu.

Unified Football Team builds links in Gladbeck Last year an Enfield football club for disabled young people participated for the very first time in a unified football tournament in Gladbeck, Germany. The exchange was such a great success that the Lebenshilfe organisation who organise the event were keen to have the team back again in 2015. The football club is run by children and families charity, Enfield Children and Young People Services (ECYPS) together with Enfield Town Football Club. They meet weekly at the Club’s site in Donkey Lane. The same team that participated in Gladbeck is also in the Middlesex FA Pan Disability League and participate regularly in tournaments across the London area too. The German tournament is a six a side competition and allows any team to include a maximum of two non-disabled players. Teams are drawn from all over the north west of Germany. Enfield’s team finished an exhausting day as runners up, behind the very experienced German team from Muelheim. Although football is the focus of the trip, ECYPS staff was keen that each visit encompasses cultural aspects of the host country too. Last year they visited the Schalke 04 stadium and took in sights of the river Rhine. This year included a visit to the industrial

heartland of the Ruhr area and to a coal mine in Essen. The fitness levels of the team may well have been affected by the fact that the very generous hosts also own a café that sells amazing German gateau. These were sampled with great enthusiasm by all team members. Second place for the team also meant the acquisition of a wonderful trophy that will be presented to Enfield Town in due course. Congratulations to the team and maybe next year if they can participate again, they can go one better and bring home the winner’s trophy.

Tackling youth crime through sport Enfield Children and Young Person’s Services supported a group of young people to complete a 1st4sport – Level 1 Award in ‘Using Sport to Tackle Youth Crime’. All candidates were justifiably proud of their achievements and many will now be moving on to Level 2 qualifications, which will be delivered later in 2015. Any young people who are interested in participating in future training rounds should contact Shamima Rahman from ECYPS on 020 8373 2692.

Child Sexual Exploitation Child sexual exploitation involves children and young people under the age of 18 in situations where they receive something in return for them performing, or being involved in, sexual activities. The person (or group) exploiting the child or young person will gain power over them by giving them something material, like gifts, money, drugs or alcohol, or something emotional, such as affection, a sense of importance or a feeling of ‘being somebody’. The victim often doesn’t realise that they are being exploited because they see the exploiter as their boyfriend or someone who will look after them. The exploiter can become threatening, intimidating and violent, making it very difficult for the victim to escape from the situation. www.enfield.gov.uk/cse

Getting help If you are being exploited or you know someone who might be, help is available. If you don’t want to call for help yourself, ask someone that you trust to do it for you.

>> In an emergency – such as when someone is being violently threatened – call the Police on 999.

>> Call Enfield Council’s Children’s Social

Cycle Enfield is Enfield Council’s vision to make cycling a safe and attractive choice as a way of getting around. In Enfield, it was found that 30% of car journeys are less than 2,000 metres. This distance can be cycled in around 8 minutes. It might not always be practical to go by bike, but when it is, there are many benefits if we do.

• Develop your cycling skills so that you can be smart when using your bike on the road. Sign up to a future course at www.cycleenfield.co.uk • Become a Cycle Enfield Youth Champion as part of a youth Facebook competition. Find out more at: http://cycleenfield.co.uk/about-cycle-enfield/ youth-cycling-champions/ Getting residents to cycle more often has the potential to benefit everyone, whether they cycle or not. Designing and building safe cycling routes gives cyclists a low cost and convenient way to get around and keep fit. Others who choose not to cycle can benefit from the reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality resulting from the potential fewer journeys made by car. So the Cycle Enfield vision is about creating a place where Enfield’s residents are healthier, the air is cleaner and there are just a few less cars moving around the streets where they live. Money matters Here is some advice from the North London Credit Union (NLCU) team to help young people manage money they may be receiving. “Lots of young people have an income but don’t realise it. Income is money you are getting from somewhere else, especially if you get it on a regular basis. This could be an allowance or pocket money from your folks for helping out around the home, wages earned from a weekend or evening job or even cash you were perhaps given for your birthday from family or friends. Many young people get money from a mixture of places and if you add it all up over a year your income often comes to more than you think.

“Once you know what your income is, you can work out how much you have to spend and what you can afford to buy. This is called doing a budget. The golden rule is not to spend more than your income. When you get your money it’s often tempting to spend it straight away. Remember though, money doesn’t grow on trees. Once it’s gone it’s gone! “Our advice is to learn how to manage your money instead.

“Try to regularly save a small amount in a bank account, savings account or with your local credit union. You will then have the chance to buy more expensive things in the future without having to borrow money from somewhere else. “See the websites we have recommended below for more great information and advice. This includes online budget planners too – so why not try this out for yourself.”
