pproximately 72 million children across the world are not in school or do not have access to an education. In this magazine we hope to highlight these statistics in order to motivate everyone to do anything they possibly can to decrease this number drastically. At YELP we believe that it is possible, but only if we as a society come together and fight this problem as one unit. In this magazine you will learn about ways to help decrease this number and learn about the stories of students who aren't given many academic opportunities to grow.f you would like to follow more on what we are doing, be sure to check out our website at youthexecutivelead.org or follow us on Instagram @youthexecutivelead! We hope you all enjoy our “Towards Tomorrow magazine and learn an immense amount on how you can be the change in your community.

EDUCATION
EQUALITY
FACTS ON EDUCATIONAL INEQUALITY Education is not free in most developing countries; books, uniforms and teacher’s salary are paid for by the student’s family. This fact itself excludes a lot of children from pursuing a higher education. According to a report from global citizen, 264 million children are denied access to education. Africa has areas with less than 50% literacy among their youth. In developing countries, every additional year of education can increase future income by an average of 10%. Educated women are less likely to be vulnerable to infectious diseases like HIV, and other forms of exploitation.
Children who are born into households of low social class are more likely to be affected by the performance gap. Students of color are often concentrated in schools with fewer educational resources. Children born into countries with high levels of government conflict and national disaster are disproportionately affected by the education gap (ie. schools in Myanmar, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Haiti). According to Global Citizen, it would take 39 billion USD every year to pay for every adolescent’s education .

HOW RACISM AND EDUCATION
INEQUALITY INTERCONNECT WRITTEN BY RIA BHATIA
Whether it be in the workplace or on the street, traditionally, people of color have been at a disadvantage; this extends towards many students of color in the education system. Racism and education inequality are interconnected within the roots of the American schooling system, such as the segregation of white and colored students in schools in the late 1900s, as with many other educational systems as well. Although the world has evolved since then, the educational system seems to have taken its time to change from the roots of racial segregation and disadvantage rather slowly.
Due to racial stereotypes, prejudices, and a lack of support, many students tend to receive more or less opportunities and value simply due to the color of their skin. According to a study in 2015 conducted by Seth Gershenson, many non-black teachers display racial bias towards black students as the teachers have notably lower expectations compared to their black teacher counterparts. Yet, even though the teaching staff has achieved extensive diversity, many schools can still see a lack of teachers of color. According to the Consortium For Policy Research In Education, while there are 44% of students of racial minorities, the teaching force has only 17%. In effect, biases as such tend to create the stem for racial minority students to be offered less opportunities and support from their adult counterparts in the school system.

On the other hand, a study in 2016 conducted by Liz Sablich came to the conclusion that white and asian students are given more accelerated classes and opportunities in many schools due to a practice called “tracking”. Defined as “the practice of putting schoolchildren in groups of the same age and ability to be taught together”, tracking tends to separate students based on their past academic achievements. It can be seen that many white and asian students make up the population of children that experience tracking, while it is disadvantageous towards black and hispanic students as it tends to create or fortify various social disparities since black, Hispanic, and financially hindered students are truly underrepresented in such accelerated classes and opportunities.

TOMORROW
ACTIVISTS CHAN Education inequality has been a crisis within the world for decades, and many activists are rising to speak about this dilemma. Education inequality decreases the chance of obtaining an education and being able to pursue career choices.
Activists who join this uprising talk about the issue and incorporate a plan to implement awareness and change. Furthermore, two famous activists that have implemented change and have spoken various times about education inequality in the world are
Michelle
Obama and Malala Yousafzai. These two activists have used their platform and voice to advocate for those in need and aren’t able to speak up.
GING THE WORLD Michelle Obama created a program called Reach Higher, which inspires low-income students to obtain post-secondary education after high school. The program’s leading causes are helping students explore college and career path opportunities, understanding financial aid, and increasing summer academic opportunities for children. In modern times, college expenses are immense, and unfortunately, not everyone can afford the cost. However, this program diminishes that barrier and implements ideas and awareness to students with a low-income background to get the chance to attend college!
Malala Yousafzai developed an organization called Malala Fund, where she fights for girls across the world to attend school. Their board, sponsors, staff, leadership councils, etc. invest in various educators and programs where women’s education is their leading cause. Furthermore, the Malala Fund targets areas where women’s secondary education is limited and not as big of a priority, such as Brazil, India, Lebanon, Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Nigeria. A vital factor of the Malala Fund is the Education Champion Network supports the work of educational champions and leads to enhanced progress with women’s secondary education in developing countries!

MY NAME IS HARI K. I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT AGRICULTURE. IN OLDEN AGES THE FARMER AND FARMING BOTH WERE GOOD BUT NOW I FEEL THAT IT IS NOT OK. EVEN THOUGH IT IS 1 COUNTRY THERE IS STILL A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION BETWEEN THE STATES. THEY DO NOT SHARE WATER AND IN THIS CONDITION, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO PRODUCE RICE. THEY DEFORESTED THE LAND AND CONSTITUTED HUGE BUILDINGS AND IN THIS CONDITION WE MAY HAVE TO EAT ONLY THE BRICKS AND STONES. IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS IF THE FARMER DOES NOT CHANGE THE PRACTICES OF AGRICULTURE, THE SITUATION OF FARMERS WILL BE QUESTIONABLE.IF THE AGRICULTURE IS NOT PROFITABLE THE FARMERS WILL HAVE TO LOOK FOR SOME OTHER PROFESSION. WE HAVE SEEN DEVELOPMENT IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE, WHY IS IT THAT WE SHOULD STILL FOLLOW THE OLD METHODS OF FARMING. IT IS NOT WORTHWHILE TO FOLLOW THE OLD METHODS & EXPECT RESULTS. ANYWAY, IN ADDITION TO THE VILLAGES, THE COMMON PEOPLE SHOULD KEEP AGRICULTURE AS A PREDOMINANT LIFESTYLE AND SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GOVERNMENT IMPORTANCE TO AGRICULTURE AND ALSO AT THE SAME TIME THE NATIVE SHOULD BE PRESERVED.

I WOULD NOT GO OUT OF CHENNAI BUT STAY HERE AND WORK FOR THE WELFARE OF POOR PEOPLE WITHOUT CHARGING MONEY. I AM OF THE IDEA THAT IF ANYONE FALLS SICK THE HOSPITAL IS CHARGING THE MONEY. THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE TO PAY FOR BY POOR PEOPLE. THE HOSPITALS SHOULD CHARGE REASONABLE AMOUNTS FOR THE RICH AND POOR ALIKE. THEY SHOULD ALSO RENDER FREE SERVICE WITHOUT ANY EXPECTATIONS. I ALSO ENVISION A WORLD WHERE TEACHERS WHO ARE TEACHING ME SHOULD BE APPROACHABLE IF I WANT TO CLARIFY ALL MY DOUBTS. AN INVENTION THAT I BELIEVE WILL BE IN MY FUTURE IS THE ELECTRIC TRAIN. THIS IS OF GREAT INTEREST TO ME, THE REASON BEING THE GREAT COMMUNICATION MEDIA THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH IT AS WELL AS IT WILL BRING ABOUT THE DECREASE IN CONGESTION OF TRAFFIC.

THERE ARE DOCTORS WHO REALLY SERVE POOR PEOPLE AND AT THE SAME TIME LOTS OF DOCTORS IGNORE POORER PEOPLE. THERE ARE CERTAIN UNRELEY DOCTORS WHO MERCILESSLY ILL TREAT THE PATIENTS AND KILL THEM. @girls.for.science
Tell us more about yourself and your organization that you started?
We started Girls for Science in 2017 after we conducted a workshop near our grandmother’s house in India on disease prevention. We had so much fun and being able to talk with the girls about their aspirations about going into the STEM fields made us so excited. After this, we started Girls for Science so we could conduct more workshops and inspire and educate a wider audience about STEM. Through Girls for Science, we have conducted 6 workshops in India and here in Central Florida about disease prevention, the scientific method, and influential women in STEM. We also have a team of over 30 inspiring girls who create content for our online presence to truly inspire and educate our audience on a global level! "we need to make it a group effort to make sure everyone is getting a fair chance and we need to educate people about this inequity in order to make change."
What prompted you to start an education driven organization?
We were given the opportunity to work with another organization in 2017. During this time, we hosted a one week workshop in Mysore, India about basic scientific concepts such as disease prevention and the scientific method. As we were teaching, we noticed that we have a love for it! We got the chance to work collaboratively with each other and the students that we were teaching to truly create a difference. As we began to think about how we could continue to have an impact, we decided to start Girls for Science! What has been your biggest struggle in building your organization?
One of the biggest struggles is time management. As rising seniors in the IB Program, making sure that we prioritize is a very big part of our academic and personal schedules. With the help of our team of 30+ young women, however, we are able to delegate tasks and make sure that every goal is being achieved efficiently! How can equal access to education become a reality?
The first step in creating equal access to education is to create awareness. Many people are not aware that there is a problem when it comes to gender equality in education, or they believe that the problem has gone. The truth is, it hasn’t. Being able to inform people that there is still work that needs to be done is a big part in solving the problem. With the help of other people, collaborations with organizations, and the power of social media, we have already started to create awareness. As more people start learning about our initiative, we hope that they will take time to work toward

Tell us more about yourself and your organization that you started?
The Future Einsteins is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit intended to address education inequity by teaching underprivileged students about different scientific topics through a variety of hands-on and interactive activities, rather than the traditional lecture-based classroom style. We also provide free educational content for students via our science blog and Youtube videos, and are currently implementing a free tutoring program to help students with homework, test preparation, and content review. We are a youth-led organization consisting of 40+ students from all over the globe. My name is Aastha Bansal and I am the founder and CEO of The Future Einsteins. I am currently an undergraduate student studying neuroscience and behavioral biology on the premed track at Emory University. "I definitely hope that education equity will be achieved in the future, and in order for this to happen, we need to focus on providing resources and infrastructure in underserved communities through funding and various initiatives."
What prompted you to start an education driven organization?
Growing up, I lived in a variety of locations, including India and four states in the US. Upon experiencing so many different environments, I saw the differences in access to a good education and was distraught to realize how many people, especially those in developing countries, are illiterate or lack basic reading and math skills. I volunteered with many clubs and organizations in my area, but wanted to make a greater impact in my community, which is why I created The Future Einsteins. By offering free science sessions and camps to numerous children in my area who lacked access to these educational resources/facilities, I was able to help further their knowledge and make a small yet positive impact in their lives. What has been your biggest struggle in building your organization?
What has been your biggest struggle in building your organization? The biggest struggle in building this organization has been time management. As a full-time college student, it can be hard to juggle a rigorous workload, part-time job, extracurriculars, and The Future Einsteins. However, by recruiting an executive board of hard-working and accountable students, we have all been able to work together as a team by delegating tasks and ensuring that everything is being completed in a timely manner. How can equal access to education become a reality?
In order for education equity to become a reality, people first need to accept that it exists. Many people are ignorant towards the idea that people on the opposite side of the world lack the basic right to education, and we first need to bring awareness to this fact. Once people have acknowledged this, they can take action to better their community or start initiatives aimed to help educate people in underserved areas. Moreover, education inequity can only be resolved by systematic change and accepting that all individuals, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, or ethnicity, deserve equal access to education. When this mindset is prevalent, we can truly overcome the obstacles to education equity.

@liftinglivesnonprofit
Lifting Lives is an organization dedicated to helping communities impacted by educational inequality through fundraising, supply drives, enrichment programs and webinars, and advocacy work. Based on the motto, “students for students,” Lifting Lives is entirely staffed by an internationally-based team of over 70 students ranging from high school to graduate school. Alanna: My name is Alanna Li and I am co-president of Lifting Lives. I am a 16-year-old from Maryland and am a social equity activist, lover of international politics, and violinist. Jonathan: My name is Jonathan Wen and I am the other co-president of Lifting Lives. I am also a 16year-old from Maryland, and I enjoy debating; learning about economics and business; and teaching younger students. "at Lifting Lives, we strongly believe that conversations on education policy should focus on student experiences and thus operate with a students for students approach to empower our generation to advocate for themselves and their classmates"
What prompted you to start an education driven organization?
Alanna: I came from the background of having a grandparent that was forced to drop out of middle school and having parents that fled an oppressive regime to secure a better education for my brother and I. I grew up simultaneously learning English with my parents, and faced many challenges in navigating the infuriatingly complex education system. Having the experience of attending school in an array of neighborhoods across my school district, I know firsthand the glaring inequalities that exist within our education system. These inequalities infuriated me; I began searching for opportunities for me to incite tangible change in American schools. I started my activism journey first as a volunteer and student at a Title I school and later as a CSPAN StudentCam award-winning filmmaker that advocated for equitable education policies. No matter how much I volunteered or how much I spoke out on the issue, I always felt as if the work I was doing was woefully insufficient. Starting Lifting Lives connected me with a movement of students across the world determined Alanna: right the systematic wrongs that hinder equal opportunity. Fighting for educational equity is a continuation of my family’s journey. I hope to bring more attention to the voices of students who have been silenced by the current education system. Jonathan: Similar to Alanna’s story, I also attended school in a variety of areas in my school district and witnessed massive inequalities in funding and resources. I began volunteering my freshman year with a nonprofit focused on promoting creative thinking and interest in the STEM field to students attending low-income schools, however, I felt as though I wasn’t truly doing enough to combat the root issues in our school system and the education system as a whole in our country. Volunteering helped to mitigate the effect of certain inequalities but did not advocate for change that stopped the inequalities from arising in the first place. By creating Lifting Lives with Alanna, I was able to develop an organization that both seeks to alleviate the effect of educational inequality while also advocating for more equitable education policies by establishing partnerships with individual schools, school districts, and low-income communities.
What has been your biggest struggle in building your organization?
The biggest struggle we have faced in building Lifting Lives is the prevalent belief that youths are incapable of generating substantial change. As an organization founded and staffed by students, Lifting Lives considers its youthfulness to be its biggest asset. However, negative perceptions of youths can make charitable work on a national and international level exceedingly difficult. Despite constantly being underestimated, we strive every day to influence our communities in a meaningful manner. Here at Lifting Lives, we invest in the power of youth; we strongly believe that conversations on education policy should focus on student experiences and thus operate with a students for students approach to empower our generation to advocate for themselves and their classmates. Do you have hope that in the future education equity will be possible?
Although we strive towards educational equity, truly achieving it will take extensive systematic changes to not only the education system but society as well. Progressive funding is a small step in the right direction and should be implemented to a higher degree in every state. However, funding is just the tip of the iceberg. Educational inequality has many roots, such as the lack of inclusive curriculums, insufficient teacher diversity, racism and sexism, and the lack of mental health support available to many students. Achieving educational equity will take a massive realignment in our values as a society; voters will have to commit to electing officials that will substantially reform the education system and stakeholders in schools must commit to being actively anti-racist and anti-sexist. In a time where many advocate for lowering discrimination regulations and cutting the education budget, it is hard to imagine achieving equity in the near future. This kind of change will take generations, but it is imperative that we act now to ensure a more equitable future.
be the change Life's most urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?' - Martin Luther King, Jr. At Youth Executive Leadership Program our goal is to ensure that all students around the world recognize and utilize their community's support. How can you help support your own community? One could donate school supplies such as pens/markers, notebook etc. to underfunded schools in your community. You could create tutoring programs that work in low income. There are countless ways to provide support to your community. Check your local city website to see if there are any local food banks that you can volunteer for. Donating to different charities combating education inequity is another way that you are able to provide support for your community.
As Malala once said, “One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world”. Education, as the United Nation states, enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping poverty. 262 million children are out of school, however if we as a community are able to unite together and provide support to these students either through monetary donations or broadening access to resources, then we are able to reduce this number and hopefully create a world where zero children are out of school.

THE PREVELANCE OF TECH IN EDUCATION
While in many other schools, the hierarchy of leadership may not be the problem, just the lack of money itself. In such cases, schools can reach out to charity organizations, many of which are run by philanthropists. For example, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is particularly well-known for its generous
Technology tends to play a significant role in modern-day education. No matter the grade level, school, or field of specialization, many educational institutes display the use of technological devices within their everyday environment. On the other hand, many schools are faced with the problem of insufficient funds to purchase technology for their students and staff. In circumstances as such, schools may turn to their community to help allocate technological resources efficiently. Money holds an important role in attaining sufficient technological devices for schools. While schools can raise money through the use of fundraisers and school events, the money raised can often be proved to be inadequate. Instead, schools can focus on the hierarchy that manages funds and technology. In many cases, those in charge of distributing funds do not complete their jobs, displaying a lack of leadership and will to allocate money for technology.Â
donations to educational institutions and opportunities. Overall, the organization has raised over $4 billion towards education, and a percentage of that being technological devices for classrooms. Additionally, they fund developments in education technology, give schools access to technology, etc. Other organizations such as Digital Wish, Funding Factory, DonorChoose, and more also specialize in donations to education and technology. In the end, such projects and organizations help students further their ability to learn in their classroom environment, through laptops, interactive boards, and more. With access to technology, students are able to have access to a better tomorrow.
Breaking Barriers The importance of breaking barriers and moving forward in today’s societies WRITTEN
BY

In today’s society, I firmly believe that breaking barriers is more important now than ever. Breaking barriers is vitally important because if you don’t break the barriers in front of you, you will never reach your full potential. For example, If you are running the 100 Meter hurdles on track, and you fall on the first hurdle because it is too high, what do you do

. A) Stop trying so you don’t fall again. B)Get up and work on getting a higher vertical, so that you can overcome that barrier. I hope the answer you would choose is B, to get up and try to get a better vertical. This is an example of breaking a barrier. Now since you’ve learned how to break the barrier of the 100 Meter hurdles, you can try the 300 Meter hurdles. This is an example of reaching your full potential. A hurdle is a barrier that you have to break in order to get to the finish line. The first step to breaking barriers is to believe you can do it. Have the mentality that you have made it this far, you can’t lose! Breaking barriers is important in today’s society because it helps you grow as a person, and help develop a sense of purpose, compassion and respect towards the world. Moving forward is just as important because if you stay still, you’re not growing, learning new things, or pursuing your dreams. You have to keep moving forward to accomplish your dreams. You can’t change the world if you’re staying in one place. As Rachel Wolchin once said, “If we were meant to stay in one place, we’d have roots instead of feet.”

common trend among all these
countries is the disproportionate amount of girls that are affected by education inequality compared to their male counterparts. In Afghanistan, traditional attitudes prevent girls from attending school, substituting their time with managing household affairs. On a larger scale, only 66% of countries have achieved gender equality in education, leaving 132 million girls out of school.
