Chairman’s Message Helping a child achieve their potential is one of the most rewarding things an adult can do and at YouthNet we aim, through mentoring, to unlock that potential. Our children are our future and trying to ensure that they grow into responsible, caring adults who contribute to the community in a positive way is a duty we all have and one that YouthNet takes very seriously. There is no disguising the impact that the economic downturn has had on the island over the past four years. It has meant that we have had challenging times and sustaining our work has been more difficult. As the economy has contracted so, understandably, have our grants and donations. This in turn has impacted our resources, both financial and human, in particular, the pool of volunteer mentors. Many of our mentors have left the island and many more struggle with the increased demands on their time making a commitment to mentoring more difficult. However, I do not want to focus solely on the past, or the negative. I am looking forward to the future and seeing the plans we have put in place come to fruition. We have laid out a three year strategy focusing on diversifying our fundraising activities, creating new partnerships and increasing the number of mentors. We maintain our emphasis on robust data collection and measuring impact. Last but not least I want to say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the YouthNet team, the volunteer Board members, schools, mentors and our donors. It has been a difficult year, but they have all shown remarkable commitment and I know that with their continued engagement, YouthNet will continue to help the children of Bermuda for a long time to come.

Executive Director’s Report YouthnNet is committed to measuring the impact of mentoring and each year YouthNet’s evaluations consistently support the positive outcomes for our students:
100% of teachers value the benefits of having mentors in their classrooms, with 88% citing students’ improved attitude towards books and reading, and 51% citing improved reading ability. 89% of mentees report feeling more confident and positive about their future thanks to their mentors, while 76% report being better prepared for class, and receiving better test scores.
In addition, because of the relationships they have built with their mentors, 100% of mentees would recommend a YouthNet to a friend, with 70% reporting they would consider becoming mentors themselves. 90% of mentees agreed that their mentors were helpful, someone whom they trusted and who provided guidance. Mentees also felt their mentors helped them to be patient, respectful of others, and kind. We ended the year with 316 mentors serving 764 students in 26 school across the island just 36 students shy of our goal of 800. In addition our mentors maintained an average of 76% attendance throughout the year.
The YouthNet team went above and beyond the call of duty and volunteered a total of 135 hours. It is a privilege to lead a team of such loyal, dedicated employees and I would like to thank them for their extraordinary contribution. Each day I am reminded that through mentoring a child and developing their potential, we can inspire hope and confidence within them to achieve their goals and realize their dreams.

* In 2013 YouthNet changed its year end from Aug 31st to June 30th. FY 2014 is based on 10 months. Over the past two years YouthNet has incurred significant losses which were somewhat offset by our cash reserves. We recognize our sustainability depends upon the continued financial support from significant corporate donors, sound financial management and fundraising efforts. In accordance with its strategic priorities, YouthNet has developed a three-year financial plan, which includes further reducing our expenses, increasing our donor base, developing a raffle and establishing an annual or bi-annual fundraising event.
