JORGE TORRES FEATURED IN THE JULY 2008 ISSUE OF YOUTH RUNNER MAGAZINE.
It was 1998 when we first interviewed Jorge and he had just competed in the World Junior XC Championships in Marrakech, Morocco as a high school junior. It was the first time he had a pack of runners out in front of him. “It was the fastest pace ever, I couldn’t stay with the front of the pack”, Jorge said. As part of the U.S. Junior Team, he finished 37th in the world. He’s covered a lot of ground since that race, a college career and more big races winning the 1998 XC Footlocker National Championships after qualifying four years in a row.

Whew! What a summer, team. We are just cooling down from Olympic fever over here at Youth Runner HQ. Two weeks of watching the world's best athletes perform at their best sure is our idea of a good time. Growing up as a runner, and especially a runner in Oregon, I lived in the mystique and legend of the great American runner, Steve Prefontaine. Not only did his running electrify the track and dazzle those watching, he left the competition in his dust and had his sights on being the best in the world. Sadly, his life ended too soon and this Oregonian youngster was left always wanting a hero able to compete with the best in the world. Welcome to 2016! USA distance running is back, and we couldn't be any happier to watch, congratulate, and share in the glory of these awesome athletes. I remember we named our 4x400 meter

relay baton "Pre", hoping for some good luck. Now, may I suggest Centro, Simpson, Felix, or Rupp to bring your team good luck? But now that summer is fading, the temps are dropping, and the leaves are falling, it is time to get excited about cross-country. Maybe it's the cooler weather or longer runs with my teammates, but I always love cross-country season. For my team, it meant spending more time on the trails– chugging up the hills, flowing down tight single track, and opening up fast on the flats. Each section delivered a new challenge or opportunity, and it was up to you to take it and run. I'm excited to take this motivation invited by the Olympic champions to the trails this season to run the best I can. Those like USA 5000m runner Abbey D’Agostino also inspire me. She showed us that a fantastic competitive spirit and teamwork are just as golden as first place. See you on the course! - Ian Kesterson
I'M EXCITED TO TAKE THIS MOTIVATION INVITED BY THE OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS TO THE TRAILS THIS SEASON TO RUN THE BEST I CAN.

YR BLOGGER

YR BLOGGER & DISTANCE RUNNER Hi, I am Ethan Vargas, a 13-year-old distance runner from Hudson, WI. I run cross country and the 1500m and 3000m in the track and field season. Running has been in my family for generations and is a lifestyle for my whole family, including me. I have been a runner and multi-sport athlete my whole life but have been running competitively at the national level for three years now. My biggest accomplishment is winning the 2015 National Lutheran Cross Country Championships. At the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships in July, I had my best finish in a national championship (18th in the 3000m). In August, I attended the Youth Runner Elite Middle School Camp in Portland, OR. I learned a lot at the camp, including training tips from elite athletes that I can apply to my training for the cross country season. Running has been more than a sport for me. It’s taught me many values that I take with me in life, like work ethic. If I work hard for something, I know it will pay off. For runners, the word “training” means more than just that part of the day when you run. Training is a way of life during track or cross country season. That includes good choices about sleep, diet,
and choosing safe activities that won’t injury you during the season. The biggest part of my training is everything I do outside of my workouts--things like getting enough sleep for my body to recover and having a healthy and well-balanced diet. My training weeks are pretty simple, six days a week, with each day focusing on speed or endurance. My coaches have a philosophy similar to Bill Bowerman who introduced a more effective way of training called the easy/ hard principle. His runners ran hard one day and easy the next and repeated that pattern. This fall, I will be in 8th grade at Trinity Academy and plan to race in some high school meets like the Roy Griak Invitational, NXN Heartland, and Foot Locker Midwest Regional. My biggest goals this season are to repeat my National Lutheran Championship title in Mequon, WI, and to become an All-American at USATF JO Championships in Hoover, AL.

Q&A W I T H A Z A A N:
There were some great runs, which was the best for you?
What has been your best event and race so far in your running career?
The 8 mile hill run was my favorite. Tell us how you got started in running - track and field.
YR: Nice having you out at the camp. What do you remember the most that will help you in your cross country season?
I played lots of sports when I was in elementary school. I had a lot of endurance as a soccer player. When I was 6, my dad asked me to try track.
The best part of camp for me was running a lot of mileage on the hills around the campus. The endurance training will help out a lot during my XC season.
Describe your first race and how you did.
Who was your favorite guest coach-athlete? My favorite speaker was Philip Rocha. I was inspired by all of his accomplishments. I want to be that successful in high school. Favorite activity? Outside of the challenging runs, I liked playing capture the flag in the dark.
It was a 200m race in Bloomfield, CT. I thought I was a sprinter. I really liked Usain Bolt. I ran it in 36 seconds and came in last. That’s when I decided to run long distance races. When you changed to distance were you fast right away or did it come gradually for you? When I first started, I wasn’t that good. My coaches and my teammates really pushed me. Within a year, I qualified for my first national meet.
I love running cross country the most. My best race on the track is probably the 3k. My most memorable race happened at the UAGTCA meet in Philadelphia, when I was 7 or 8 years old. I was knocked off of the track into the infield, during the first turn. I got up and ran from 9th place to come in 3rd place. What about races that didn't go so well for you? How did you recover? I have lost plenty of races. The most disappointing are the ones when I
"MY BIGGEST ROLE MODEL WILL ALWAYS BE MY DAD" 10 | SEPT/OCT 2016
ships. My best accomplishment is probably being the first boy to win the 8 & under division XC USATF National Championship. What do you like to do when you're not training or competing for fun? I like to play basketball and hangout with my friends. What is your best subject in school? My best and favorite subject in school is math.
don’t run the times I know I can or I get out kicked. After races I don’t perform well in, I try my best to forget about them, and I work harder in practice. When you step up to the starting line what do you think about to calm the nerves before the starting gun goes off? I truly don’t think about anything and my nerves don’t calm down until I start running.
State Championship. Any goals for cross country? My big goal is to get ready for high school. I would also like to earn Junior All-American status.
"WORK HARD, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, & BE CONFIDENT"
What is the standard Azaan pre-race meal? I always have bread and pasta the night before a race. I like to eat oatmeal and bagels the morning of a race. What will your training be like from now into cross country season? How many miles or minutes will you be running? My mileage will go up, during the first 2 months of the season. I will do a lot more core strengthening exercises. My daily mileage will range from 2 to 8 miles. It depends on what my coaches have planned for us. What big meets are you planning on competing in for cross country this fall? I plan to qualify for and run in the USATF and AAU XC Nationals in December. I also plan to run in the CT. Middle School
What other sports do you participate in?
Who are your role models?
My biggest role model will always be my dad. He coaches me in running and basketball. He teaches me a lot about how to be successful in life. My running role model is Haile Gebrselassie. He was a great runner at several distances. He is also small like me. What are your best accomplishments in running? I have won several national champion-
I play basketball and golf. I noticed you were wearing Oregon gear at camp, what do you like about Oregon the most? My favorite runner there is Edward Cheserek. He is a great role model for all of the short runners. I like the college because they always have great distance runners. What is your FAVORITE? Color- Green Food- Mac and Cheese Music- Hip-Hop/Rap App- NBA Live Olympic Athlete- Mo Farah Any advice for other athletes that want to be fast like you are? Work hard, listen to your body, and be confident.

ADVICE FROM THE 14-YEAR-OLD RUNNER
BRANDON MILLER HAD A PRETTY GOOD WEEK AT THE AAU JUNIOR OLYMPIC GAMES THIS YEAR... We met Brandon right after his epic 1500 meter run in the 14 year old boys division at AAU Junior Olympic Games in Houston, TX. He broke the record with a time of 4:02.09. The day before he set a new record in the 800m prelims and then in the finals did even better with a 1:51.23. As he described the 1500m, “It was a great race for me, I figured I would chill until the last lap and then kick it in.” Even though he did lead the entire race. His role models are C.J. Jones and his mom & dad. Brandon likes to play video games, the drums, hang out with friends, and he also plays basketball. Next up is competing with his school cross country team. Brandon says to other Youth Runners, “Work hard at every practice and have fun!”

MEMORIES
FROM RIO
It was incredible that some teenagers made the USA Team this year and we were cheering them on all the way. Vashti Cunningham made the team in the high jump and placed 13th in the world. She had a medal in mind and it was a huge disappointment for her but she will be back. Sydney McLaughlin made it into the semi finals in the 400 hurdles but when you’re running against the fastest in the world at age 16 it’s going to be tough.
MATTHEW CENTROWITZ
22 | SEPT/OCT 2016
Watching Galen Rupp medal in the Marathon was awesome. He was a Guest Editor in Youth Runner as a high school senior and we’ve been following his career every step of the way. Matthew Centrowitz taking gold in the 1500 meter run, Wow! The U.S. hasn’t gotten a gold medal in the 1500m since 1908. How cool is that? His dad was an Olympian and went crazy in the stands with his friends when Matthew crossed the line.
Ryan Crouser winning gold in the shot put was more than awesome. His dad and uncle were in the Olympics but didn’t medal. His cousin Sam made the Rio team for the javelin but didn’t medal. Ryan brought home the gold for all his family.
RYAN CROUSER
ALYSON FELIX
Good to see Evan Jaeger get gold for the steeplechase and Shalane Flanagan medal in the women’s marathon. The sprinters performed well with the 1-2-3 sweep by the women in the 100m hurdles and both relay teams winning gold. EVAN JAEGER

How about Ashton Eaton getting back-to-back gold medals in the Decathlon and his wife Brianne getting bronze in the Heptathlon. You can see some of the event replays at nbcolympics.com.

MATT WALSH
WHAT IS THE FUNDAMENTAL FIVE? A Runner's ability to maintain a relaxed posture and fluid running form requires a complex interaction of mileage, intensity, postural awareness, strength, stability and mobility. If you will devote time to each of these components you have a better chance of improvements in running economy, reducing the risk of injury, and increasing speed.
The Fundamental 5 focuses on just one of these components, a runner's postural awareness. Successful runners train this ability to maintain great body shape/postural alignment and control (even when they are fatigued), through all the phases of a running cycle. The Fundamental 5 is a series of running specific motions challenge balance and control. What I have outlined next is the most basic form of the fundamental 5 that we give to many of our runners, elite and recreational. Once mastered, more volume is added, then load, PAY CLOSE and finally greater complexity ATTENTION and speed. This not a substiTO FORM, AS tute to your regular training such as dynamic warm ups, QUALITY IS lifting and mobility programs. CRITICAL TO Pay close attention to form, as quality is critical to success. SUCCESS
Matt a Level III Sports PT and a Senior Physical Therapist at P.A.C.E. This year they had 7 athletes compete at the Rio Olympics including Matthew Centrowitz and Galen Rupp. We were fortunate to have Matt at the YR Camp again this year. 24 | SEPT/OCT 2016
