Summit 2015 Ann Arbor, MI October 23-25
Welcome to Summit 2015! Welcome to the 2015 YVC Summit: Grow Your Impact. This is our annual opportunity to get together as a Youth Volunteer Corps family. It is a chance to learn from each other, celebrate our successes and plot our way forward in a relaxing, encouraging and fun atmosphere. We are excited to have the Summit in Ann Arbor, Michigan, site of one of our oldest and most successful Youth Volunteer Corps programs. Many thanks to the youth and adults from the YVC in Ann Arbor and their host organization, the Ann Arbor YMCA, for all their hard work in planning this Summit. Jennifer Granholm, a Canadian who went on to become Michigan’s first female governor in 2003, said, “Sometimes leadership is planting trees under whose shade you’ll never sit. It may not happen fully until after I’m gone. But I know that the steps we are taking are the right steps.” Let’s all take that to heart this weekend as we take the steps necessary to grow our YVC program and its impact. Yours in service,
David Battey President and Founder

There are thousands of YVC projects taking place each year throughout the U.S. and Canada, and we’ll hear about just a few of them in this workshop. Youth from across the YVC Network will be sharing with us some of their favorite projects, and you can share a favorite project of your own, too! We’ll also have some time to discuss how we could have made the project even better if we were to hold them again today. Facilitator: Eileen Van Kirk is the YVC Coordinator for Muskogee Parks & Recreation. Eileen and her husband Dan, an adult YVC volunteer, spend most of their spare time working with the local community gardens and the farmer’s market in Muskogee. With an empty nest for the first time in 35 years of marriage, the new plan includes more travel and a fancy chicken coop!
Selfies and Tweets for Youth Service
Restaurant in Lobby
A silly cat video can be viewed by millions within an hour, and a celebrity’s selfie can reach all corners of the earth. But how can we use social media to promote all the awesome things youth are doing in their communities through YVC? Let’s harness this viral power of social media to make a difference. We’ll break into small groups to talk about how to share our stories of service on social media to recruit volunteers, find potential donors, spread the word about YVC and more. We’ll leave with the tools and ideas to share our stories of service to help further YVC’s mission. Facilitator: Lacey Helmig is YVC’s Communications and Media Coordinator. She manages YVC’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts but mostly just posts too many photos of her two dogs on her personal social media accounts.

This workshop will involve a panel discussion created to provide a broad perspective on all the options and opportunities your service can lead to, including AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, jobs, scholarships, college choices and more (note that some of the opportunities discussed may only be available for U.S. residents, i.e. AmeriCorps).
