Genesis 1–11
LESSON AIM ■■ To show students how the Bible explains that God is gracious and kind, even though people always want to live their own way.
LESSON OUTCOMES Students will learn about: ■■ the sin, consequences, grace pattern in Genesis 1–11 ■■ how the Bible describes God’s grace and kindness. Students will learn to: ■■ define sin, consequences and grace ■■ see that God loves people.
We remember that God created all things and his creation was very good (Genesis 1–2). However, the bliss did not last long. Soon Adam and Eve were led astray by Satan. They chose to ignore the command of their good God and King, rejecting him to follow their own desires (Genesis 3). This was the beginning of the disastrous downward spiral that is sin. Very quickly things went from bad to worse. Not only had death entered as a reality into human existence, but so had pride, envy, jealousy and even murder—brother killed brother (Genesis 4). Sin spread like a plague. The children of Cain were evil to their core (Genesis 4:17–24) and eventually, every thought and plan of the human heart was only evil all the time (Genesis 6:5). But despite the spread of sin God continued to be both just and gracious. As people sinned and faced the consequences of their sin in his judgement, God remained merciful and offered grace (see the table below).
MEMORY VERSE [God] doesn’t tell lies or change his mind. God always keeps his promises. Numbers 23:19 (CEV)
At the end of chapter 11, it seems that the pattern had been broken. Was God no longer being merciful and gracious to the people he had made? Genesis 12 provides the answer.
» Bible background This lesson sets the scene for the promises to Abraham in Genesis 12. To understand the promises properly, it is important to understand what happened before Genesis 12.
God’s grace to the world after Babel, scattering people throughout the whole world (Genesis 11:8–9), was that through Abraham the whole world would be blessed. This is the context in which we meet Abraham (Genesis 12).

■■ What pattern can you see that has formed icon on ourSelf chart? (Accept responses. It is the sin, consequences, grace Nature pattern.)icon ■■ Who can tell me what sin is? Bible Exploration icon (Accept responses. Sin is when people live their own way and not God’s way. They ignore God.) ■■ Who can give me an example of consequences from our chart? (Accept responses. One example is that Adam and Eve didn’t listen to God and ate the fruit that God commanded them not to eat. So God made them leave the Garden of Eden, and Adam would struggle to grow food.) ■■ What do you think grace means? (Accept responses. Grace is God’s kindness to his friends, even when they don’t deserve it. Although people do the wrong thing and ignore God sometimes, he is kind and remains the friend of anyone who trusts and follows Jesus.) ■■ How do you feel about the fact that even though no-one is perfect, God is still kind? (Accept responses. Link this to some of the teaching from Term 1 about Jesus.) We saw people being disobedient in our lesson today but God kept being kind because he loves his people so much. But we haven’t yet seen how God was kind after the Tower of Babel event. We’ll have to wait until next lesson to find out more about God’s grace and love.

ADAM AND EVE God created Adam and Eve and placed them in a beautiful garden to live. They were never hungry or uncomfortable. God gave them one command and that command was that they were not allowed to eat from one of the trees in the garden. This tree had the power to let them know the difference between right and wrong. But Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the fruit from this tree. Then they realised they were naked and hid from God. After this God said that the woman would be in pain when she had children and would experience trouble with her husband. God said that the man would struggle to grow food and would struggle to earn a living. But God still loved his creation so he made clothes for Adam and Eve now that they realised they were naked and also sent them away from the garden. This was so they wouldn’t eat from the tree that would let them live forever.

THE WORLD After Adam and Eve had many children, and they had their own children, there were many people on the earth. But these people didn’t love or follow God. They were very bad and every thought they had and every plan they hatched was against God. So God brought a flood to the earth and wiped out all the people, animals, birds and reptiles that weren’t on the ark. But God saved Noah and his family. They weren’t perfect but they loved God and wanted to live his way. Noah built an ark and when the rain came God shut the ark and kept everyone on board safe while it rained for 40 days. Then God put the first rainbow in the sky and promised Noah that he would never again flood the earth. He also blessed Noah so that he would have lots of children and his children would have lots of children, so that there would be people everywhere in the world.

THE TOWER OF BABEL After God promised Noah he would never flood the earth again, Noah and his family grew and grew until the world had lots of people. Some of these people settled in a place called Babylon and forgot about God. They thought they were the most important and the best— they were very proud. They decided to build a tower that reached to the sky so they would be famous and so everyone could live together and not be scattered on the earth, even though God had said to have children and fill the earth. So God came down to the people and confused them by making them speak different languages. They couldn’t understand each other and had to stop building the tower. And God scattered those people all over the earth.
