PL E
The baptism of Jesus and his subsequent testing in the desert show us that Jesus was the obedient Son of God.
M
In this lesson students will: • discuss the concept of baptism and understand its significance • explore their own experience of baptism and compare it with Jesus’ baptism • reflect on the significance of the biblical events in light of who Jesus is.

TODAY’S LESSON PRAYER Begin by praying something like, ‘Heavenly Father, please speak to us today from your word, the Bible. Help us to see that Jesus was your beloved and obedient Son. Show us what this means for our lives today and help us to put our trust in him. Amen’.
RECAP
PL E
Ask the students what they remember from last week’s lesson. Perhaps you could provide a reward for the first student who reminds the class of the big idea—that the miraculous events surrounding the birth of Jesus demonstrate that he was no ordinary man—he was the Son of God.
ACTIVITY: CELEBRITY HEADS
Begin today’s lesson with a quick game of ‘Celebrity Heads’. Ask three volunteers to come out to the front of the room and face the class. Write the name of a celebrity on the board behind each volunteer so that they can’t see it.

M
Each of the volunteers must then ask ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions of the class in an attempt to guess their identity. If they get a ‘yes’ response, they are allowed to ask another question. If they get a ‘no’ response, the next volunteer gets to ask his or her questions. The game continues until each volunteer has guessed his or her identity.
LINK
Explain to the class that these volunteers have just been trying to guess their identity. In today’s passage, Jesus was told of his own identity—that he is the Son of God. He then demonstrated the truth of this title through his perfect obedience.
DVD Watch the Jesus movie from 9:04—12:28 minutes. This covers the events from Jesus’ baptism to his temptation in the desert. Use this time to hand out the Bibles and Student handbooks.
