ONE KISS OF THE ETERNAL

The world puts off its mask of vastness to its lover. It becomes small as one song, as one kiss of the eternal. Rabindranath Tagore

ONE KISS OF THE ETERNAL This portfolio includes my latest works of arts and design: book covers design, CD package design, editorial design, postcards design, illustration, photography, and multimedia arts. I condensed all I learned these years into this A4 size book. It is small though, my great love of arts and design is totally revealed. Just like one small kiss of the eternal.

HUSHABYE MOUNTAIN It's a novel about the author’s childhood. She lived near a mountain which a river flew by. She liked to take little boat sailing on the river. The Whole story is written in a peaceful and serene tone, so I design it in an elegant and simple style. The mountain, the river, the boat and the apple tree are essential elements which are mentioned repeatedly in her retrospective story. Hence, I organized these objects to compose the book cover. AUTOPORTRAIT Unlike other autobiography, the author accumulated lots of details of his daily life with dry, quizzical tone to reveal himself. After reading his description, I feel he is like a nonstop, motionless robot who keeps depicting himself. Besides, I use a dark background to express the feeling of indifference and strong contrast of value to show struggles deep in his heart. THE BODY KNOWS EVERYTHING This is a collection of short stories by a Japanese famous novel writer, Banana Yoshimoto. The underlying, cohesive theme is about embodied experiences --memories, natural instinct, and insights that our bodies tells us. Sometimes we want to forget someone, however our bodies keep reminding us the connection which can’t be cut off and ignore.

A LIZARD CRAWLED INTO MY NOSE This is my project in the National Chiao Tung University Institute of Applied Arts 100th Exhibition. I set up a big box and a small box. There were 400 capsules in the big box as a symbol of lizard's eggs. Inside each capsule, there was a small picture book which told my little secrets. Once people inserted their own secrets in the small box, they could take one of my capsule away and they could discover my secret stories. It was a procedure of exchanging our secrets. POSTCARDS DESIGN This set of postcards is designed to convey ecoawareness. According to theory of evolution, from the very beginning, all creatures lived in the sea. Then, amphibian appeared. Continuously, there were reptiles, birds and mammals. Finally, we human beings came to the stage of the world. What will be the next? Maybe skyscrapers and construction will occupied the space all creatures live. S I Z E : 10. 5c m x14. 8c m / Y E A R : 2013

THE MONSTER This is an illustration I painted for the story I wrote. The story is about a monster and a kid live together on a small island. They are intimate friends, however the monster grows bigger and bigger which is hard for him to live on such a small place. They have some arguments and then the monster leaves. It is the first time the kid feels lonely. The story is kind of a reflection of my situation now. I used to write stories inspired by my daily life. S I Z E : 14. 8c m x21c m / Y E A R : 2013

PHOTOGRAPHY When I was 10, I started to take photos. At that time, the digital camera hasn’t been invented yet. I needed to load a film before taking picture. Not until the film was developed did I know how the photos looked like. It really interested me. Now I still love traditional camera. When I load a film, I feel like I am holding a ceremony and something is going to happen. That is why I am so fascinated by taking pictures. I am lucky that I had the chance to travel in Japan and took lots of pictures. I also recorded my daily life in Taiwan by photography. As a result, my photos include different scenes and cultures.

THE REVERBERANT LABYRINTH AN INTERNATIONAL ART PERFORMANCE BY TRANSART NCTU,TAIWAN, 2012-2013 My most precious experience these days is my time with “TransArt NCTU in 2012. It was a multimedia team led by professors in my institute and two other professors from the Institute of Architecture and Institute of Music. We presented a multimedia stage piece that integrates the arts of digital images, music, dance, and interactive audio devices. I was in charge of the part of the show that told a story, that I wrote myself, through my illustrations and light box real-time interactive image technical setup. Another performance used Kinect depth camera, projection equipment and a Quartz Composer, a kind of interactive software on the MacOSX platform that captured images of my actions and projected them onto a wall.

前言

Preface

The Reverberant Labyrinth, 2012-2013

"The Reverberant Labyrinth" is a multimedia stage piece that integrates the arts of digital images, music, interactive sound installation, dance and more. The stage is divided into many sections that interact with each other, and the symphony of light and sound creates a complex and diverse space of life. The work examines the interwoven relationship between the internal and external aspects of people. In the complicated and interlocking labyrinth, people encounter nostalgia, conflicts, hopes and dreams. Life is a journey, an entering of a labyrinth, in which the traveler does not know whether one is on the way to returning home or setting out on a remote adventure.

The Concept of “The Reverberant Labyrinth” The Reverberant Labyrinth reflects a creative heritage. This begins with Taiwan's talking and singing arts, then continues with combining traditional yueqin, erhu, and sikuai instruments with modern compositions. Inspiration is also derived from the rice pounding traditions of Taiwan's Aboriginal people and the rainsticks used by indigenous people in Central and South America to bring rainstorms. When producing the column instrument, the principle of sound feedback was used to generate a creative performance based on sound and the body. Finally, an overlaid image of a gradually opening rotating wheel links the concepts of a sound labyrinth, visual labyrinth, and life labyrinth into the creative framework. Its theater stage performance brings together many elements including traditional Taiwanese chanting, sound installations, live electronic feedback, interactions of physical and virtual images, the combination of string and wind instruments with body performance, physical stage props, and digital images. With the appearance of a rotating maze, different media are linked in a chain, allowing an overlap between time and space. A fast rotation, or stagnation at one point, enables certain expressions and reflections of life to reverberate.

In the script and choreography, TransArt NCTU transcends the boundaries of time and space and the development of a linear story, finding a space between the ancient and the technologically modern. Walking the boundary between the individual and the world outside, montage and collage techniques are used to express the theme of the Reverberant Labyrinth. In a labyrinth, in either real life or a performing work, each of the apparent dead ends marks a starting point and an end point. It reveals the essential nature and process of life and suggests taking things slowly and enjoying the many pleasures of life, rather than rushing after one thing and another. The work uses interdisciplinary cooperation in the pursuit of free artistic spirit. It takes us back to the original idea of life and is an expression of the sensations and understanding of life. For a generation immersed in technology, the work attempts to reflect the most fundamental human sense of belonging in this world – the labyrinth.

The Visual Labyrinth

The rotating wheel performance is connected with a Kinect depth camera, projection equipment and a Quartz Composer, which last is a kind of interactive software on the MacOSX platform. The Kinect depth camera uses an infrared laser covering an approximately 30 degree range to emit an infrared laser array invisible to the human eye, while an infrared camera is used to photograph the laser spots. Variation in distance from the point of emission and the angle of emission produces changes in the size of the infrared laser array and shape of the laser spot. The Kinect camera gathers these laser points, which are then converted into 640X480 pixel grayscale images through an internal algorithm. In each of the grayscale images, closer objects appear nearer to white in color, while distant objects appear nearer to black. With the help of the OpenCL language provided by Quartz Composer software, grayscale images can be modified, filtered and shifted in order to select specific depth information. For example, the upper and lower thresholds of grayscale depth in an image can be discarded to refine photographs of objects within certain depth ranges. After establishing a depth photography system using this method, a “deep” performance area was created on the stage. This system is used to create images, and to carry out image segmentation and image reconstruction using Quartz Composer software.

Using both the depth and image segmentation systems, the stage is divided into five separate threedimensional spaces, which make up the frame of the rotating wheel. Reproduced on the wall of the stage using a projector, the image transforms itself into a rotating virtual space hidden within the existing space of the stage. The two systems work together to present the performers' physical interpretation in the five spaces. A variety of visual effects are added, and the performance is stored in the virtual space. This gives the space new life and definition, becoming a thought provoking rotating visual labyrinth. The depth photography system and image segmentation system are used to process the images, and the position, size, and direction of the images are controlled across five time intervals, while the performance action changes the trigger point for the five images.

The light box and webcam are used to create real-time interactive images to tell stories.

The use of the real-time interactive images from the light box to tell stories is borrowed primarily from a technical setup created previously. However, the text of the story was rewritten for the new production, with a voiceover of memories from Taiwan's past added, including the sound of an elementary school end of class bell, Taiwanese songs after WWII, and the afternoon sound of cicadas. Aside from the rotating wheel labyrinth, these sounds provide a unique set of memories of childhood in Taiwan.
