For nearly 100 years this iconic 50 piece orchestra has become renowned for an ever-changing program that ranges from the classics – Bach, Mozart and Tchaikovsky through Operetta, Musical Theatre – from Gilbert & Sullivan to Andrew Lloyd Webber – and contemporary composers such as John Williams (Star Wars) and Peter Allen. Directed by acclaimed ABC Orchestra conductor, Gerald Keuneman, whose credits include Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Olivia Newton-John, Anthony Warlow, and Nick Cave, it promises to be a highly professional performance.
Half breathtaking virtuosity, half passionate lyricism, Shostakovich’s youthful Octet is all showpiece—the composer himself described it as ‘the very best thing I have written.’ The Brahms Quintet shows a mature composer at the height of his powers, mining the intense vein of emotion and tender feeling that is the hallmark of his works. The program’s finale is a must-hear performance of Romanian composer George Enescu’s haunting Octet, a work of magnetic Romantic beauty and startling originality. This new collaboration between two celebrated artists from different worlds has immediately established itself as a formidable force in Australian chamber music. Zoe Black has long been thought of as a violinist’s violinist, and pianist/composer Joe Chindamo’s unique musical gifts place him in a class of his own. The repertoire is an eclectic mix of radical reinventions of works by the masters, original compositions by Chindamo plus a few unlikely surprises. The programme will include works by Puccini, Chopin, Gershwin and Dolly Parton – all reimagined by the duo. Together, Joe and Zoe are creating an entirely new genre of Australian music, combining lyricism, urbane rhythms, a modern romanticism, making this music thrilling, passionate, daring and alive.
Flinders Quartet is instantly recognisable as one as Australia’s most loved chamber music ensembles. A quartet for the twenty-first century, their dynamic and stirring performances of a full spectrum of repertoire have audiences and critics articulating their esteem, and the quartet is now a highly respected force in Australian chamber music. Flinders regularly commissions and premieres works by Australian composers. In 2013, the quartet premiered Joyce’s Mob, a new string quartet by Elena Kats-Chernin, and new works by Paul Dean and Paul Grabowsky are slated for 2014. Flinders has previously commissioned and premiered works by Peter Sculthorpe, Ian Munro, Calvin Bowman, Richard Mills, Ross Edwards, Stuart Greenbaum, and Katy Abbott in their ongoing mission to further the Australian tradition of chamber music. “Flinders Quartet … whose players give such care and unanimity of musical thought to Australian Chamber Music …” Peter McCallum, Sydney Morning Herald
