LOCATION AND RESIDENTS

WESBURN TOWNSHIP IS LOCATED ON THE WARBURTON HIGHWAY. IT IS SLIGHTLY OVER AN HOURS DRIVE WEST OF MELBOURNE, LESS THAN A 10 MINUTE DRIVE EAST OF WARBURTON AND SLIGHTLY OVER AN HOUR DRIVE EAST FROM THE YARRA RANGES NATIONAL PARK.

THE TOWNSHIP OF WESBURN CONTAINED A POPULATION OF A LITTLE OVER 1,000 RESIDENTS IN 2016 HOWEVER IT IS EASILY AND CLOSELY ACCESSIBLE TO THE MUCH LARGER AND BROADER AUDIENCE OF THE SHIRE OF YARRA RANGES WHICH IN 2018 HAD A POPULATION OF OVER 158,000 RESIDENTS.

WESBURN PARK IS LOCATED ADJACENT THE WARBURTON HIGHWAY AND ITS LOCATION PROVIDES NO RESTRICTIONS IN REGARDS TO ACCESS.

MOUNTAIN BIKING

IN THE BROADER AREA OF WESBURN AND NEIGHBORING TOWNSHIPS THERE ARE EXISTING TRAILS (ALIGNMENTS FROM TRAILFORKS.COM) AS SHOWN ON THE PLAN. THE YARRA RANGES COUNCIL ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT DEVELOPING THE SPORT AND FACILITIES OF MOUNTAIN BIKING WITHIN THE REGION AND AS SUCH DEEM WESBURN PARK TO BE WELL LOCATED FOR A BIKE FACILITY THAT WILL PROVIDE CONNECT INTO ADJACENT TRAILS AND FACILITIES.

WORTHY OF MENTION IS THE ONGOING MOUNTAIN BIKE FOCUSED PROJECTS BY THE YARRA RANGES COUNCIL INCLUDING THE CURRENT FEASIBILITY PROJECT UNDERWAY AND THE WARBURTON MOUNTAIN BIKE DESTINATION PROJECT. MORE INFORMATION OF THE LATER CAN BE FOUND AT RIDEYARRARANGES.COM.AU

NOTES

1. CONNECTION TO THE PUMP TRACK IS SHOWN TO BE CONSISTENT WITH THE WESBURN PARK MASTERPLAN.

2. THE CONCEPT DESIGN HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN TO BEST AVOID EXISTING VEGETATION BASED ON INFORMATION AVAILABLE. THE DESIGN WILL BE DEVELOPED IN A MANNER OF PROTECTING EXISTING VEGETATION. THIS MAY INCLUDE PATH REALIGNMENT, ADDITIONAL RETAINING WALLS AND/OR REALIGNMENT, ALTERATION OF PUMP TRACK FOOTPRINT (I.E. NARROWING OVERALL WIDTH FOR PREFERRED OUTCOMES). DEVELOPMENT AND FLEXIBILITY IN THIS CONCEPT PLAN IS ADEQUATE TO ACCOMMODATE REFINEMENT IN FUTURE DESIGN PHASES.

BEGINNER TRACK

DESIGN COMMENTARY

TRACK ARRANGEMENT

THE TRACK IS LARGE ENOUGH TO BE SPLIT INTO TWO PORTIONS, A MAIN TRACK, AND A BEGINNER TRACK FOR THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS:

1. THIS PROVIDES BEGINNER USERS A SPACE OF THEIR OWN HOWEVER THE BEGINNER TRACK DOES SHARE PLATFORMS WITH THE MAIN TRACK TO ENCOURAGE MINGLING AND VIEWING WHICH IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUNGER ASPIRING USERS TO WATCH AND LEARN FROM 'THE BIG KIDS'.

2. THE MAIN TRACK CAN BE DESIGNED WITHOUT HAVING TO ACCOMMODATE THE INTERSECTION OF BEGINNER AND MORE ADVANCED USERS WHICH MAY HAVE NEGATIVE IMPACTS ON A TRACK DESIGNED TO ACCOMMODATE EVENTS/RACING

BEGINNER TRACK

THE BEGINNER TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 60M LONG AND PROVIDES A MIX OF FEATURES INCLUDING BERMS, ROLLERS, HIPPED ROLLERS, AND A LITTLE DOUBLE JUMP THAT IS COMPLETELY ROLL-ABLE. THERE ARE 3 GOOD SIZED PLATFORMS WHERE A USER CAN REST, AND THE INSIDE OF THE BERMS HAVE FLAT APRONS TO ACCOMMODATE THE USER WHO HASN'T QUITE GOT COMFORTABLE WITH GOING FAST. THE BEGINNER TRACK MAIN PLATFORM INCLUDES A SHELTER, PICNIC SETTING, WATER FOUNTAIN, BIKE RACKS AND RUBBISH BIN FOR USERS AND SUPERVISORS.

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED TRACK

THE MAIN TRACK IS APPROXIMATELY 290M LONG AND INCLUDES LARGE FEATURES THAT ALLOW IT TO BE RIDDEN AGGRESSIVELY BY ADVANCED RIDERS BUT ALSO SHAPED TO ALLOW INTERMEDIATE USERS TO UTILISE THE FEATURES IN A DIFFERENT MANNER I.E. ROLLABLE LARGE DOUBLE JUMPS THAT CAN BE PUMPED. THE TRACK NEEDS TO BE DYNAMIC AND FLEXIBLE WHERE ADVANCED AND INTERMEDIATE USERS CAN DISCOVER TRANSFER OR DIRECTION CHANGE OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE NOT PART OF THE “DESIGNED LOOP”. THIS KEEPS THE TRACK EXCITING AND CHALLENGING FOR ALL USERS AS THE TRACK IS USED IN NUMEROUS WAYS AND DIRECTIONS. THE LAYOUT PROVIDES MULTIPLE OPTIONS FOR THIS INCLUDING A LARGE CENTRAL SECTION THAT WILL ALLOW THE CHANGE OF FLOW AND DIRECTION WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE AN ADVANCED TRANSFER LINE TO BEST CATER TO BOTH INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED RIDERS.

NOTES

TRACK RELATION TO EXISTING SITE

THE EXISTING COURTS SIT 1.0 – 1.5m ABOVE THE ADJACENT NATURAL GROUND SURFACE ON THE SOUTH AND WESTERN SIDES. AS SUCH THE SITE STRATEGY HAS THE TRACK ‘SUNK’ DOWN INTO THE SITE TO BEST AMALGAMATE THE FACILITY WITH ITS SURROUNDS AND REDUCE THE EXTERNAL BATTERS OF THE TRACK. THIS IS DEMONSTRATED BY THE EXISTING GROUND LINE SHOWN IN THE PROJECT SECTIONS

AT THIS TIME THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE TRACK WILL BE 600MM ABOVE THE EXISTING LEVEL OF THE COURTS AND THE LOWEST INVERT POINTS OF THE TRACK WOULD BE 700MM BELOW THE EXISTING LEVEL OF THE COURTS. THIS WILL CREATE THE NEED FOR DRAINAGE TO BE CAPTURED THROUGH A PIT AND PIPE ARRANGEMENT AND CONVEYED TO THE SOUTHWEST.

IDEALLY THIS WILL EITHER CONNECT TO AN EXISTING UNDERGROUND SYSTEM OR DAYLIGHT INTO AN EXISTING SWALE OR BASIN. NOTED THIS WILL NEED FURTHER INVESTIGATION IN DESIGN DEVELOPMENT.

THROUGH DESIGN DEVELOPMENT THE DESIGNER WILL CREATE A BEST FIT CUT FILL BALANCE TO REDUCE SPOIL BEING REMOVED FROM SITE AND FOR PROJECT COST ECONOMY.

Pump Track Features

Wesburn Park Pump Track

PUMP TRACK RACING HAS RECENTLY BEEN ADOPTED BY THE UCI (UNION CYCLISTE INTERNATIONALE - INTERNATIONAL CYCLING UNION) AND AS SUCH GUIDELINES OF HOW THESE EVENTS ARE TO BE RUN HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AND ADOPTED TO ALLOW COMPETITION TO A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LEVEL POSSIBLE. THE FIRST UCI ACCREDITED WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OCCURRED IN 2019.

TRACKS SUITABLE FOR RACING NEED TO ALLOW FOR 2 RIDERS TO “PURSUIT” AGAINST ONE ANOTHER AND FOR A SOLO RIDER TO BE ABLE TO RIDE. RACING IS BASED ON ELIMINATION WHEN TWO RIDERS ARE ON THE TRACK (USUALLY THE PRE-FINALS ROUND OF A COMPETITION) OR TIMED LAP WHEN ONE RIDER IS ON THE TRACK (USUALLY INITIAL QUALIFYING ROUND, SEMIFINALS AND FINALS OF AN EVENT).

FOR EXCITING VIEWING IT IS GREAT TO HAVE A MIRRORED TRACK TO ALLOW SPECTATORS TO SEE WHO IS UP, OR DOWN DURING AN RACE WITH TWO RIDERS ON THE TRACK. AS SUCH THE LAYOUT OF THIS TRACK IS AN INTERWOVEN MIRRORED TRACK SHOWN BY THE TWO RACE LINES IN THE ADJACENT PLANS. THIS MEANS THERE NEEDS TO BE TWO START POINTS AND TWO FINISH LINES. THE TRACK LAYOUT ALLOWS

FOR THE START POINTS TO BE AT OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE TRACK BUT THE TWO FINISH LINES IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT EACH OTHER SO THE RIDERS ARE RACING TOWARD A COMMON LINE.

THE TRACK FEATURES OF THE INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED TRACK FOR AN EVENT SHOULD BE OF A LARGER SCALE TO ACCOMMODATE THE HIGHER SPEED NATURE OF RACING. FEATURES WILL BE ANYWHERE FROM 0.5M TO 1.3M HIGH. THE FEATURES NEED TO BE DESIGNED TO BE FAST AND FULL OF ACTION FOR AN ADVANCED RIDER BUT ALSO ROLL-ABLE TO ALLOW FOR AN INTERMEDIATE USER TO ENJOY THE TRACK AND LAP IT IN ITS ENTIRETY. THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED USING METHODS LIKE SHAPING TABLETOPS TO BE MORE LIKE TWO ROLLERS ALLOWING THE SAME FEATURE TO BE RIDDEN IN TWO DIFFERING WAYS DEPENDING ON THE RIDER’S ABILITY AND CONFIDENCE.

THE PRINCIPLE AF THE PUMP TRACK LAYOUT ENSURES GREAT EVERYDAY USE THAT IS NOT COMPROMISED IN ANY WAY TO ACCOMMODATE AN EVENT READY TRACK. THE LAYOUT COULD ACCOMMODATE EVENTS OF VARYING SCALES FROM COMMUNITY EVENTS TO LARGE SCALE EVENTS IF DESIRED.

FEMALE PARTICIPATION

FEMALE PARTICIPATION IN ALL FORMS OF BIKE RIDING IS ON THE INCREASE, HOWEVER IT IS STILL A MALE DOMINATED SPORT. THROUGH DESIGN THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BETTER ENCOURAGE WOMAN TO NOT ONLY USE THE TRACK BUT TO TAKE SOME FORM OF OWNERSHIP OF THE FACILITY TO FEEL SECURE AND COMFORTABLE TO SPEND EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME AT THE TRACK.

MULTIPLE 'HANG OUT' SPOTS

THE DESIGN REQUIRES TO HAVE MULTIPLE HANGOUT SPOTS TO GIVE MULTIPLE GROUPS THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE THEIR SPACE AND NOT FEEL INTIMIDATED OR PUT OFF BY OTHER USERS.

LIGHTING

FACILITY LIGHTING PROVIDES SECURITY FOR ALL USERS. A HIGH LEVEL OF LIGHTING CAN BE PROVIDED AT EACH SHELTER AND ALONG ACCESS PATHS.

PASSIVE SURVEILLANCE

SIGHT LINES INTO AND THROUGH THE FACILITY SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN DESIGN DEVELOPMENT. THE SITE HAS EXISTING VEGETATION AROUND IT SO IN AREAS WHERE THERE IS NOT VEGETATION IT IS IMPORTANT THEY REMAIN VISUALLY CLEAR. SIGHT LINES TO THE EXIT POINTS OF THE TRACK AND PARKING ARE DESIRABLE.

TRACK AND HANG OUT DESIGN

THE TRACK DESIGN DOES NOT NEED TO CATER SPECIFICALLY FOR WOMAN, THERE IS NO MASCULINE OR FEMININE TRACKS. THE TRACK NEEDS TO BE DESIGNED TO CATER FOR ALL AND HAVE A VARIETY OF FEATURES, OPPORTUNITIES AND EXPERIENCES.

THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A HANG OUT SPOT TO BE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR WOMAN WHERE ALL ASPECTS LISTED HERE ARE AMPLIFIED AND THE AESTHETICS ARE CONSIDERED FEMININE TO BEST CATER FOR FEMALES. THIS MAY BE BEST UNDERTAKEN IN CONSULTATION WITH THE USER GROUPS DURING DESIGN DEVELOPMENT.

TECH INTEGRATION

THERE IS MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES TO BUILD IN INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES INTO THE PUMP TRACK THAT WILL PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL LEVEL OF ENGAGEMENT AND FUN FOR USERS. THROUGH THE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PUMP TRACK IT IS ENCOURAGED THE FOLLOWING (BUT NOT LIMITED TO) TECH FEATURES ARE EXPLORED FOR INTEGRATION INTO THE FACILITY. THIS WILL ENCOURAGE MORE USERS AND FOR THOSE USERS TO STAY LONGER.

TRACK SENSORY LIGHTING

LED LIGHTING ON OR WITHIN THE TRACK COULD BE A VERY ENGAGING ELEMENT ON THE TRACK. THIS COULD BE A SERIES OF LIGHTS THAT ARE ACTIVATED AS A RIDER GOES BY AND FADES OUT OVER THE NEXT SECOND OR TWO. THE RIDER WOULD HAVE A TAIL OF LIGHT.

LED BANDS OF LIGHTS LAID INTO THE BERMS PERPENDICULAR TO THE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL THAT ARE ACTIVATED WHEN A RIDER HITS THEM WOULD BE ANOTHER STRONG SENSORY ITEM THAT WOULD BE VERY COOL IN A RACE ENVIRONMENT

USER ACTIVATED FILMING WITH THE INCLUSION OF A PERMANENT BIG SCREEN AND A SERIES OF PERMANENT CAMERAS LOCATED AT THE TRACK A SYSTEM OF CAPTURING A USER ON THE TRACK AND PROVIDING THEM WITH A VIDEO OF THEIR LAP COULD BE PROVIDED. THIS WOULD INCLUDE THE USER PURCHASING A 'TOKEN' THAT ACTS AS A SENSOR FOR THE CAMERAS TO WATCH AND FILM. THE USER WOULD PURCHASE THE TOKEN AND ENTER THEIR EMAIL (FOR RECEIPT OF THE VIDEO) AT A KIOSK, SLIP THE TOKEN IN THEIR POCKET AND THEN SIMPLY RIDE THEIR LAP. AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM WOULD HAVE THE CAMERAS CAPTURE FOOTAGE OF THE USER, FORMAT IT INTO A PREARRANGED VIDEO FILE THAT IS DELIVERED TO THE USERS EMAIL.

HERO SHOT

AN OPPORTUNITY EXISTS FOR THE WESBURN PARK PUMP TRACK TO FRAME THE 'HERO SHOT', THE SHOT THAT EVERY USER WANTS, ITS ARRANGED TO CAPTURE A GREAT ANGLE, MAKE THE USER LOOK FULL OF ACTION, CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF THE PARK WITH THE FOREGROUND AND BACKGROUND CONTENT AND MAYBE SLIPS A LITTLE MARKETING IN THERE ALSO SO IT IS NOT MISTAKEN WHERE THIS PHOTO IS FROM!

THIS COULD BE ACHIEVED WITH THE INCLUSION OF A CAMERA/PHONE STAND THAT HAS CONSIDERED ALL OF THE ABOVE, ALL THE USER NEEDS TO DO IS ATTACH THEIR DEVICE TO THE STAND AND HAVE SOMEONE PUSH THE BUTTON AT THE OPPORTUNE TIME, OR SIMILAR TO THE USER ACTIVATED FILMING, PURCHASE A TOKEN FROM THE KIOSK AND THE INBUILT CAMERA CATCHES YOU AT THE PERFECT SPOT.

THE WESBURN PARK PUMP TRACK SHOULD CAPTURE A PORTION OF THE PUMP TRACK, THE SURROUNDING VEGETATION AND SOME WESBURN PARK PUMP TRACK TAGS. IT COULD ALSO HAVE A SUGGESTED 'HERO HOUR' WHEN THE SUN IS LOW AND THE LIGHT IS RIGHT.

INBUILT TIMING WITH LEADER BOARD AND APP

AN INTEGRATED TIMING SYSTEM WOULD ADD A LEVEL OF COMPETITIVENESS AND FUN TO THE TRACK. PHYSICALLY SPEAKING THIS COULD INCLUDE A CENTRAL LIGHT SYSTEM SIMILAR TO THAT USED AT THE DRAG RACES TO INDICATE RIDERS AT EITHER END OF THE TRACK WHEN TO START. THE TRACK COULD HAVE A RIDER (SENSOR) ACTIVATED /FINISH LINE THAT NOT ONLY RECORDS THE RIDERS TIME BUT DISPLAYS IT ON A BIG-SCREEN AND RECORDS IT ON THE 'LEADER BOARD'. ALONG WITH A TRACK LEADER BOARD THERE COULD BE AN APP THAT USERS CAN MONITOR ON THEIR DEVICES.

INTERACTIVE BIG SCREEN

INTERACTIVE BIG SCREENS HAVE BEEN USED IN VARIOUS SCENARIOS WITH SUCCESS. AN INTERACTIVE BIG SCREEN AT THE WESBURN PUMP TRACK WOULD BE A GREAT WAY FOR USERS TO FILM OR CAPTURE IMAGES OF THEIR FELLOW RIDERS, FORMAT THE CONTENT ON THEIR DEVICE AND THEN SEND IT TO THE BIG SCREEN. THE BIG SCREEN SYSTEM WOULD REQUIRE AN AUTOMATED SENSORING SYSTEM (AUDIO AND VISUAL) AND WOULD THEN PLAY BACK (APPROVED APPROPRIATE) CONTENT. DURING BUSY DAYS IT WOULD REQUIRE A 'PLAYLIST' TYPE ARRANGEMENT WHERE NEWLY SUBMITTED CONTENT WOULD GO TO THE BACK OF THE QUE.

THE OTHER ADVANTAGE OF A SITE BIG SCREEN WOULD BE THE ABILITY FOR THE FACILITY TO HOST VIDEO BASED EVENTS THAT MAY INCLUDE THE RELEASE OF A NEW MOUNTAIN BIKE FILM OR AN AWARD CEREMONY FOR A MOUNTAIN BIKE ATHLETE FOR EXAMPLE.
