Ysgol John Bright ANNUAL PARENTS REPORT 2010 - 2011
Message from the Chair The Annual Report deals the school’s activities for the past year. Ysgol John Bright is an English medium high school serving the town of Llandudno and the surrounding area. I am pleased to inform you that the academic year, 2010/11 was very successful due to the hard work of our staff and students. Examination results have shown further improvement at both GCSE and A level and the Governing Body would like to thank all our staff, teaching and non-teaching alike, for their dedicated contributions which led to this raising of standards. There is an expectation of higher standards across all areas of the school; once again music and sporting activities have resulted in some outstanding performances, the behaviour of students continues to underline their commitment to study and positive attitude to learning and the considerable improvement in the wearing of uniform portrays Ysgol John Bright in a most favourable way. On behalf of the Governing Body I would like to extend our congratulations to our Headteacher, Mr Graham Davies and all our Staff for improving standards and results, it clearly highlights their commitment to the students. The contribution made by our support staff, both in the classroom and behind the scenes has also been a key element in the raising of standards. Our thanks to them all. Finally, I would like to personally thank all our Governors for their support and continued interest in the well-being of the school David Rowley Chair of the Governing Body

The Student Disciplinary Committee Chair - Mr B Hansen Link - Headteacher Mr W G Davies The Governors’ Student Disciplinary Panel meet on half termly basis to discuss and offer support to both school staff and the parents and students alike with issues of behaviour. This is a positive addition to the behaviour management policy of Ysgol John Bright and attempts to intervene at an earlier stage than perhaps previously.
The Finance Sub-Committee Chair - Mr R Hall Link - Deputy Head Mr D V Williams This Committee met 5 times during the year. Governors received regularly reports on the 2010/11 budget and discussions took place on the progress of the various cost centres. The Committee also discussed projected student numbers and supported requests from staff for continued additional training. In addition, the Committee agreed to underwrite the costs of staging the school production of “High School Musical” at Venue Cymru. The school provided an Easter Revision School for the second year and the Finance Committee agreed to its funding. Virements from the carryover from financial year 2010/11 were approved as was the formal delegation of restricted powers to the Headteacher. The proposed music tuition fees were agreed by the Committee. The Governors also set the budget for the 2011 – 2012 financial year and received reports on the school position in the early months of operation. The final governors meeting bid farewell to Mr DV Williams who retired at the end of the academic year and welcomed Mrs RJ Davies who will now manage the school budget.

The Full Governing Body The Full Governing Body met for official business 3 times in the year. They were joined by 2 Associate Governors from the Student Leadership Team. The full Governing Body has received reports from its sub-committees and from link governors who visit the subject areas in the school.
Headteacher’s Report I am delighted to provide this report to parents as an illustration of the continued progress and success of Ysgol John Bright. Standards at KS3 In 2011 the school achieved its best ever KS3 results. In Mathematics 82% of students achieved level 5+, in English 80% of students achieved level 5+, in science 84% achieved level 5+ and the CSI was 69%. These results demonstrate significant improvement and are very encouraging and are above the Wales and Conwy average. Standards at KS4 -GCSE We are also pleased with our improving GCSE results. In 2011, 68% of Year 11 students achieved 5 or more grades A* to C. This is the 4th year in a row that the school has exceeded 60% and is the highest score on record for the school and is above the Wales average for this measure. These results build on the results over the past 3 years. The percentage of students that the school enters for GCSE or equivalent exceeds the average for Wales as a whole. In 2011, 90% of students achieved 5 or more passes at A-G compared to 86% in 2010 this is also above the Wales average and is also a record for the school. We are pleased with the progress to date. Standards at KS5 – A Level Significant progress has been made post 16 and in 2011 the A level results reached record levels for the second year running. The headline figures for the A2 results are that 37% of grades were A*/A passes, this is very impressive and is well above county and national averages. Furthermore at least 50% were A-B passes and at least 74% were A-C passes. The overall pass rate at A* was 6% and the overall pass rate was 97% both these figures are broadly in line with the national average. We are delighted with these results and are pleased with the impact of the Welsh Baccalaureate on student outcomes where 78 students achieved an A grade equivalent. We have included the WBQ scores in the above figures. All students opting for University were able to take up their places successfully. Welsh All students following the National Curriculum and study Welsh as a compulsory subject across the three stages. In Year 7 there are two tutor groups all of which are immersed in the Welsh language

Ysgol John Bright ANNUAL PARENTS REPORT 2010 - 2011 during their tutor periods and are encouraged to speak Welsh as the preferred method of communication. Digital leaders Ten students from Ysgol John Bright have been appointed digital leaders in the school, as part of this they have been issued with a netbook, thanks to sponsorship from Gaia. They have wireless access to the network, and are using the netbooks in lessons. They use the netbook in order to record results for the class and to support the use of digital media in the classroom. As part of their role they will be undertaking a variety of tasks and recently presented at the inet conference in Cardiff. They have also been developing a project helping anyone interested in using Google docs. It is envisaged that the digital leaders will be used by staff and students to develop further expertise in the use of ICT as tool to improve the classroom experience. 3D Learning Suite The school is now one of the few in North Wales to have a fully operational 3D learning suite thanks to further support from Gaia. The suite opened in the summer term and can be used to bring to life so many aspects of the school curriculum. The suite is bookable and we hope to encourage our partner primary schools to use this excellent facility. Careers Mark Accreditation Ysgol John Bright is the first school in Conwy to have been awarded the prestigious Careers Wales Mark. This was awarded on 14th July 2011. It confirms that the school not only has a very high standard regarding the provision of Careers and World of Work, throughout all key stages, but also demonstrates that the school has active procedures in place to ensure a continuous process of improvement for Careers and the World of Work. Furthermore, Careers Wales wish to include a report of the school’s accreditation as an example of, “a best practice case study that will appear on Careers Wales Online, as one method of celebrating the school’s success in achieving the Mark.” This is recognition of all the hard work in ensuring that our students are best prepared to make the transition into the World of Work Inclusion Quality Mark Ysgol John Bright became the first secondary school in Conwy to win a national inclusion award, demonstrating excellence in provision for all its students regardless of background, need, ability or disability. Following a three day visit in July, assessors found the school’s policies, procedures and staff meet high standards demanded under the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM). The IQM scheme recognises inclusive excellence where the teaching and learning, achievements, attitudes and well-being of every student is upheld. Assessors highlighted that John Bright’s staff ‘at all levels demonstrate a strong commitment to the ethos of the school and take pride in the contribution they make to raising aspirations and improving the life chances of young people.’ The school was seen to have a clear drive for improvement which has seen a ‘significant rise’ in results at GCSE in 5A*- C grades. Its students were found to be ‘very confident in talking about their November 2011
5
Ysgol John Bright ANNUAL PARENTS REPORT 2010 - 2011 learning and clearly felt the school was working hard to improve their life chances’ and parents were ‘appreciative of the support their children received from the school’. Other strengths identified included the school’s proactive work with partner primary schools, clear expectations and values of mutual respect and responsibility and investing heavily in providing upto-date technology for learning. During his visit, assessor Malcolm J White said: “The school has worked hard to develop an inclusive educational environment and I have been impressed by the warmth of staff and their skills in supporting young people with a range of needs.” He added: “The governing body, leadership team, teachers and other staff are committed to providing an inclusive environment for both young people and adults, and, because of this, staff, parents and students feel that they are listened to and their concerns and suggestions are taken into account.” I am delighted that the work of the school has been recognised by this prestigious national award. We are very proud of our school and everyone associated with Ysgol John Bright is thrilled by the news of this excellent achievement. Ysgol John Bright is a unique and distinctive school that strives to unlock the potential of all its students and the IQM award is testimony to this. Patagonia Expedition A group of YJB students spent the first three weeks of their summer holidays backpacking around the Patagonia region in South America. Our intrepid explorers, who had been fundraising for the trip for two years, embarked on a journey of discovery which including a three day snow trek in the mountains, whale watching, and a week spent working with the Welsh communities of Gaiman and Trelew. David Keller, the member of staff who led the trip, said “this was a real life-changing experience for the entire group. It was great to see the students interacting with members of the Welsh communities; we were warmly welcomed and made to feel at home when we were such a long way from our families” You can read more about the trip and see photos on the YJB Blog. Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at YJB The Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme was launched at YJB in 2009 with a small group of twenty Year 10 and 12 students completing Bronze Award. Fifteen of the students were successful and then received their award at a regional awards ceremony. This number more than doubled in its second year, with 39 students completing their qualifying expedition at Bronze, and a group of Year 12 competing silver expeditions. These students are now wrapping up the other sections of their award and handing in their completed record books. We are on track to have a large presence at the regional awards ceremony in March 2012. Student Leadership At Ysgol John Bright we are proud of the role our Student Leadership Team play. The team, led by Head Boy Kyle Mickleburgh and Head Girl Rachel Land, consists of 15 students all of whom have shown the highest personal and academic standards in the process of being elected by their peers and the staff of Ysgol John Bright. The Student Leadership Team meet regularly with the Head to November 2011
6
Ysgol John Bright ANNUAL PARENTS REPORT 2010 - 2011 discuss issues which are important to the all the students of Ysgol John Bright. As a team they are responsible for representing the school in a wide variety of events both within the school and at local and national events. In the next twelve months the team will work with variety of teaching staff and many of the two hundred members studying Post 16 courses at YJB in leading the Student Council, as peer mentors in Bullywatch, as reading mentors for younger students and as Learning Champions for the subjects they study. The culmination of the time in office is the May Ball which celebrates the end of their seven years at Ysgol John Bright and takes place in the summer term. Learning outside the Classroom We offer a wide range of opportunities for students to extend their learning and personal development outside the normal curriculum. We have superb ICT, art, science, technology, sports music and drama facilities which are all available beyond the taught day. We compete in sports to a very high level, with some students performing at national level. Our 5/60 officer recently received national recognition for her work in promoting sporting activity in the school. There is ample scope for doing additional extension work in all subjects, particularly for project and course work and examination preparation. Extra curricula music is a major strength of the school and was described by Estyn as “outstanding”. Students are fully engaged in a wide range of music and performance activities and the performances of “Kiss me Kate” in March 2009 and the 2010 show “Fame” at the Venue Cymru were a stunning success. This year “High School Musical” once again drew in 1700 paying guests from the local community. We were very proud to share and celebrate the exceptional talent of our staff and students with the wider community in Llandudno. Links with the community During the past year the school held a launch afternoon for the school show where members of the local business community were invited in for refreshments, a tour of the school and excerpts of the show. We also launched the new Gaia Hospitality Suite and 3D Viewing Room where again the business community and media came into the school. The Police Liaison Officer continues to PSE lessons to raise social awareness with our students and further forge links with the community. We have a Road Safety Team, local Financial Advisors, University advisors, drama groups, sporting legends who come in on a regular basis to speak with our students. We also hold a “Dragon’s Den” where members of the business community support our students in developing their entrepreneurial skills.
Access The school is DDA compliant. The lift enables access to all parts of the building and we provide additional support for pupils, staff or visitors who need assistance. There are toilet facilities for students in each block of the building. Male and female toilet blocks are open daily for students in C and D block. Disabled facilities are also available on each floor across the school. All of the toilets are cleaned twice daily, at the beginning of a school day and the November 2011

Additional Learning Needs Report Provision for Meeting the Learning Based Educational Needs of students The Code of Practice identifies 3 stages of intervention to meet additional learning needs as recorded on the Additional Needs Register : 1. 2.
3.
A student may be statemented – this is done by the LEA and identifies specific provision. A student may be placed on school action plus support by the ALNCO – this means we will direct additional resources to support the pupil. Conwy also offer support at SA+ and the LEA will issue a contract. A student may be identified as School Action – this is done by the ALNCO and flags up to classroom teachers the areas where a student may encounter difficulty at a greater level than average.

Ysgol John Bright ANNUAL PARENTS REPORT 2010 - 2011 The responsibility for meeting the needs of students at School Action of the ALN Register remained at the class level.
The Basic Skills and Catch Up sessions continued. The majority of students were withdrawn from at least one lesson per week in order to focus on specific skills. Students were also supported through the use of word and number shark computer packages.
All school based TAs received training in the catch-up literacy programme. TAs continued to provide in-class support to students, and withdraw students individually to enhance their numeracy and literacy skills.
We currently have 13 Teaching Assistants employed through L.E.A. provision in the school. Provisions for Meeting the Additional Needs of Physically Impaired Students Mrs P Richardson in her role as ALNCO takes initial responsibility for physically impaired students. Mrs Richardson monitors the inclusion of physically impaired students in the classroom. She liaises with outside agencies to ensure that the needs of the students are met. The school has two students currently supported due to physical impairment as of September 2011. Conwy help deliver an adapted PE curriculum in consultation with P.E. staff to enable students to participate in P.E. and games activities with their peers. The school has one EVAC chair installed outside the canteen in A block, to enable physically impaired students to be evacuated from the highest floor in the event of an emergency. Mrs Hughes and Mrs Pearson undertook the training to enable them to train others to use the EVAC chair safely. Relevant TAs and some members of staff have been trained in the use of the EVAC chair. Mrs Becky Davies has formulated Strategic Emergency Rendezvous Points around the school to enable the safe location and evacuation of these pupils. Liaison with other educational institutions We integrate our resource based students in the resource centre into full mainstream education by the time that they are in year 10. We participate in the Managed transfer of students who may be having difficulties with other Secondary Schools in the Locality. We make visits to the local PRU’s that our students may attend from time to time to aide in their re-integration programmes. We have close links with the local college at Llandrillo yn Rhos. Some of our students undertake vocational courses on day release in years 10 and 11. Resource Base We have 12 students in the resource base. 8 students are Statemented and 4 have SA+ Contracts. All students attend mainstream classes and they follow mainstream curriculum arrangements. The base facilities are available for specific Literacy/Numeracy if necessary, for differentiated class-work and for course-work support as needed. November 2011

Ysgol John Bright ANNUAL PARENTS REPORT 2010 - 2011 This unit is specifically funded by the LEA. Over 85% of the funding provides for a teacher in charge and 1.5 teaching assistants, the remainder covers administration costs and materials. The allocation of students to the unit is a joint decision between the LEA and the Headteacher. Ideally 12 places are available but in cases of need, this can be extended to 15. Provision for Meeting the Additional Needs of Sensory Impaired Pupils Mr Steve Boothby is employed by Conwy LEA to test any students that present with possible Sensory impairment. We undertake support packages as directed by Mr Boothby. We have two LEA staff that support students and differentiate work according to their needs and Statemented provision. Provision for Meeting the Additional Needs of Students with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties Students who may be experiencing problems are identified and brought to the attention of the Social Inclusion Team who meet once a week. The team consists of key members of staff including the ALNCO and the Assistant Head as well outside agencies such as the Social Inclusion Co-ordinator, CAMHS and our in house ESW. Packages of support can be drawn up through consultation and amended as need/circumstances change. The team plan Behaviour Modification Strategies, Anger Management programmes and counselling. Alternative Curriculum Learning Support Centre The school provides a support centre for all year groups 7-11 through a provision in DG14. The Centre provides for those students that have been disapplied from a subject, to enable them to concentrate on improving core skills. It also allows those in years 10 and 11 and who may be struggling, to catch up on course work. A full time TA is employed to staff the centre during the school day. It is co-ordinated by Mrs Richards who keeps a register of who and when they attend, and what they should be doing. Students who are either integrating or re-integrating into the mainstream will do so whilst being scaffolded through the L.S.C. External agencies such as the E.A.L. service, the L.S.S. and the SLICC team may base themselves in the L.S.C. Individual Education Plans In accordance with the Code of Practice, Individual Education Plans are written for students who experience literacy and /or numeracy difficulties if their needs are not met by the usual differentiation that is provided within the classroom. A copy is retained in school and available for all members of staff to consult, and a copy sent home for parental information. The ALNCO offers meetings to each parent of a student who is in receipt of an IEP. These meetings constitute an annual IEP review. External examinations Examination special arrangements are requested and granted as appropriate, to ensure the individual needs of students with special educational needs is met. This includes enlargement of exam papers for our visually impaired pupils. Scribes and readers may also be provided. ALNCO TA MLD IEP LEA LSC EAL November 2011

More Able and Talented At Ysgol John Bright we believe that providing for More Able and Talented learners in our school is a matter of equity - as with all other students they have a right to an education that is suited to their needs and abilities, to allow them to fulfil their true potential. It is vital that they remain motivated throughout their education as research indicates they may disengage from their learning, if not sufficiently challenged. To that end, each department has identified a number of students who fulfil the agreed criteria for more Able and Talented. Their names are held on a central list that is made available to staff at all levels. Teachers aim to meet their individual learning needs to enable them to develop their academic potential, whilst ensuring that they remain an integral part of their peer group as they mature socially. Students have the opportunity to attend master classes and other enrichment experiences such as working with renowned authors and artists, entering subject specific national competitions and a programme of support for application to the Russell Group Universities.
PE Report Active Marc In January of this year we successfully achieved the Sports Council Wales ‘ActiveMarc Cymru’ award. This award provides a national opportunity to celebrate and recognise success and good practice in physical activity in schools. The application focuses on five areas including student achievement, the quality of teaching, training and assessment. How well the learning experiences provided by the school meets the needs and interests of students and the wider community. How well students are cared for, guided and supported. And finally how effective is the leadership and strategic management of Physical Education and School Sport. In the detailed feedback we received the assessors commented that “This is a very strong application and details given reflect high quality learning and teaching in physical education and a department which constantly is striving for improvements”. Additionally they concluded that we could be used as an example of good practice.

Sports Accelerate Programme at Ysgol John Bright As part of the liaison programme with local primary schools we have developed a Sports Accelerate Programme. The programme was designed to develop positive attitudes to physical activity, improve core skills and student confidence and stretch our more able and talented students. It is hoped that the program will also have a positive impact on the students’ performance in other subjects and help them to improve their own learning and performance. Furthermore the students got to use the facilities at Ysgol John Bright and meet some of the teachers which will aid the transition between primary and secondary school. 5x60 The 5x60 Scheme continues to grow. It aims to encourage our students to take part in physical activity and to lead a healthy lifestyle. By 2020 the aim is to get 90% of secondary school pupils participating in 60 minute of physical activity five times every week (5x60). A host of arranged activities take place before school, at lunch time, after school and at the weekends. This year 504 different students took part in a 5x60 sessions, which is 53% of students in years 7 - 9. The activities on offer included: Badminton, Table Tennis, Street Dance, Futsal, Dodgeball, Girls Football, Dance Mats, Boys Football, Zumba, Cricket, trampolining and Mountain Biking. Gold and Silver Young Ambassadors The Young Ambassador Movement aims to empower and inspire young people to become role models and leaders through sport, by developing their confidence and skills in order to increase physical activity participation in others. This year Jacob Upright in Y12 became one of only two students in Conwy to be selected as a Gold Ambassador. Over the next two years Jacob will work to promote healthy active lifestyles, promote the London 2012 and Paralympic Games and raise student understanding of the Olympic values. While Jacob will focus on achieving this in Conwy, Joshua Parry and Rebecca Cross have been selected as Silver Young Ambassadors who will focus specifically on developments at Ysgol John Bright. Congratulations to all three students and good luck in what will become a very busy year as we increasingly focus on 2012.
