Summer Term 2011 Edition 3

Message from the Head We have recently said farewell to Year 11 and Year 13 as they embark on their GCSE and A level examinations respectively. It is always an emotional time for students and staff particularly for Year 13 students who will be heading off to University in the autumn. Our year 11 students were given a wonderful send off at the presentation evening held in May and Year 13 celebrated with the annual May Ball held at the St Georges Hotel. Both these events were hugely successful and most enjoyable. The students were resplendent and impeccable in their conduct. We are all very proud of them. Most of our Year 11 will be returning to Ysgol John Bright to study in the sixth form and we are delighted to see the number of students in our sixth form continuing to grow. As ever it is a pleasure to be able to share with you some of the very exciting news and developments that have taken place at Ysgol John Bright during the summer term. Please enjoy this newsletter; it is intended to keep parents informed about the vibrant learning community that is Ysgol John Bright. I would like to thank all parents and guardians for their continued outstanding support during this academic year, a year during which we have once again made excellent progress towards our aspirations of providing the very best educational experience for all our students. Headteacher`s surgery As part of the home school partnership I want to encourage parents to come to the school and talk to me about the issues that concern them. Sometimes this can be a challenge due to work commitments and consequently appointments can be difficult to fit in. I am available to see and speak to parents for two hours per week without appointments. I am available every Wednesday between 8.00am and 9.00am and every Thursday between 3.30pm and 4.30pm. Parents can come and speak to me about any matter during these times, without an appointment. W G Davies (Headteacher)

This year saw us returning to Torgon for what we hoped would be another successful trip – we were not disappointed. Travelling so late in the year it is fair to say we were all slightly apprehensive as to what the snow conditions would be like and we knew our trip was going to be slightly different to last year’s to accommodate the weather. However by all accounts everyone had an amazing week, we skied for 4 days at Verbier, which did mean a bit of drive every morning and evening but I think everyone used this opportunity to catch up on some sleep. Skiing conditions were pretty good and suited the ability of our group really well. The trip this year did include a visit to the local Spa, which did mean that we had a welcome break from bruised shins, a visit to the local hospital (thanks Theo) and a visit to the largest indoor water park in Europe – all of which were great fun. Well done to the students who made it a hassle free and enjoyable trip, I can only hope for the same next year.

Pupils from the school entered a design competition to advertise Llandudno in Bloom last week. The event was judged by the Mayor and members of the Llandudno in bloom committee, who were very impressed with the quality and standard of the work submitted. The winning design is now going to be used by the committee on the front of their literature to advertise the event, which is part of the national Britain in bloom competition. The students are pictured below with the Mayor of Llandudno, Cllr Greg J T Robbins.

Get Set Ysgol John Bright has been selected as a case study for the Get Set London 2012 Olympic Website. We have been focusing on how the Olympic and Paralympic values feature in everyday life and can help a variety of people become part of a strong community. As a school, we will be supporting Malawi, South Africa and the Great Britain team for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We have links to partner schools in both Malawi and South Africa and keep in touch online with students from those schools. We run a wide variety of activities linked to the Games including a sports module linked to geography, ICT portfolios based on the values, a ‘sporting heroes’ programme with primary schools, designing products linked to the Games and we have just entered the Get Set to exercise your taste buds competition in the hope that our recipes could fuel the athletes in London 2012. As London 2012 approaches, the school aims for their students to fully experience the build up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games despite being a long way from London. The school was selected on the basis of an outstanding blog post describing the activities that the students have been involved in. The school will receive a letter of congratulations from Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and they have won a visit from an athlete as a reward for their efforts.

Congratulations to all on Duke of Edinburgh silver expedition. All completed, passed and going to sleep well tonight. Well done!
