About the artist:
Working from her garden studio in Leicester, Sarah Kirby is a linocut printmaker working in oil based inks creating original prints with a bold graphic quality, looking at themes of public spaces, buildings, gardens and gardening, plants and trees, particularly focusing on the part these influences play in people’s lives.
Kirby graduated from West Surrey College of Art and Design with a BA in Fine Art and City University, London with an MA in Museum and Gallery Studies and later with an MA from Nottingham Trent in Fine Art. She played a strategic role in the running of Leicester Print workshop from many years but since 2000 has been a full time artist printmaker.
Growing up in Cambridge, and living next door to Cambridge University Botanic Gardens, her father who was a plant physiologist, taught her the joys of gardening and they spent many weekends in long greenhouses and at their family allotment where she learnt a fascination and inspiration for the interaction of people in the land and landscape, building knowledge about the future of nature, the existence of green spaces for everyone, plants, the future and security of food production, and the preservation of trees and wooded areas.
All these factors influence the way Kirby works today, spending time walking, talking and drawing through the seasons to learn about the creation of our landscape and its history. Sometimes focusing on the remains of gardens, evidence of former lives and how buildings have taken on new uses or have been left to decay.
The 500 acre site that is Yorkshire Sculpture Park resonates strongly with Kirby; the combination of art and landscape where you can walk and talk, spend time sketching, learn about the landscape, the buildings and their history, celebrating the incongruity of the past 300 years of population and cultural change.
