introduction This book is created from scraps of paper found lining American and British 19th century children’s books in the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature, and derived from transcripts made between February and October 2010. The Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries Controlled Vocabularies defines these scraps as “waste”, but I have fondly called them “somnotexts”; that is, “sleeping texts”. The introduction continues after this page: I have allowed the scraps to tell you a little more about my perspective of the situation. Enjoy.

This book would not have been possible without the guidance and assistance of Rita Smith, curator of the Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature, the tireless Mil Willis, from the reading room, the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries, and my advisor, Dr. Terry Harpold, among many others.
