ur society is not very accepting of women who have been divorced. This makes it tough for them to get on in everyday situations that married people may take for granted. It’s a form of social suicide; the label “divorce” is one that is feared by many. Some women would rather continue in an unduly difficult relationship than to end a marriage for fear of what people will say. I was shocked after watching a video on YouTube where several men were asked if they would marry a divorced woman and most of them refused. How awful for someone to judge a person by their social status. This is not even judging a book by its cover: it goes beyond that, it’s judging it by the title! Women, just as men, are entitled to be happy in a marriage. The reality is that society is easier on men than on women when it comes to divorce. Marriage is a personal issue, however when it ends it seems to become a public matter and you become the talk of town. A person shouldn’t have to suffer because their marriage has ended nor should they not be given a second chance at having a rewarding marriage. Here is a message that I would like to dedicate to anyone who is divorced or knows someone who is going through it: “You are not your divorce. You are an amazing person with a lot to give. Leave the past where it belongs: in the past. Focus on yourself and be positive for the future, which you can shape. Have faith that things will work out in the end because just like everyone else, you are entitled to be happy.”

I refer to the story “A Time Of Reflection” (Issue 424) describing the feelings of fasting Muslims and the impact of long fasting hours this Ramadan. I have had the privilege to observe Ramadan in places like Sweden, Denmark and Germany, which usually have longer fasting hours than the Gulf and Asia, but have never felt any kind of discomfort. To be frank, it is the faith and spirit that keeps you going. The long fasting hours might force us to to minimise outdoor physical activities but in no way is it a matter of any kind of worry or mental agony. In fact, the couple of minutes of extra time of fasting gives us additional time to get ourselves connected with our creator Allah, who has referred to this month as His month and promised for His special blessings on all those believers who observe this obligatory fast just to please Him. At some point of time, it just becomes a mind game. The faith pushes behind all

memories, my ongoing nostalgia. Every year, I yearn for Ramadan’s days to come so I may go through my childhood days all over again: my first day of fasting until sunset; buying my first lantern (fanous) and helping other kids in our neighbourhood to hang Ramadan decorations. It also means remembering my grandparents (may they rest in peace) and having Iftar with my large family. For me, Ramadan is my joy and my path to God. A blessing in heaven and on earth. of Manpower, said: “The country does not encourage income tax, particularly when it is only targeting the expat community. “Every country has its own procedures and in this country, we do not encourage such a tax. If there is any kind of tax, it will be for everyone, expats and Omanis. “Expats are not strangers for us and they work according to the Labour Law. The Labour Law controls all the expats and it does not involve income tax.” Backing up al Saadi’s statement was Tawfiq al Lawati, the head of the Economic Committee at Majlis Al Shura, who was quoted as saying: “We don’t have a system of imposing income tax on people here, whether Omanis or otherwise, and levy it only on companies. “Personally, I would avoid it, especially with the current oil prices. It is not possible for people to pay tax when they don’t know what it will be spent on,” he said. However, Oman has already confirmed it intends to introduce value added tax (VAT) from next year. The country’s new budget projections show a deficit of RO3.3 billion in spending for 2016, which the Government says it will try to reduce by boosting non-oil revenue and cutting expenditure. Oman’s Ministry of Oil and Gas has revised petrol and diesel prices for June, with the price of super grade petrol (M95) set at 180 baisas per litre and 170 baisas for a litre of regular petrol (M90). In May, the price of super grade petrol was 161 baisa per litre and regular petrol 149 baisa per litre. Meanwhile, Oman has recorded a three per cent fall in the number of expat managers in the private sector this year, with 37,966 managers in April compared with 39,130 in December. Expatriate managers make up 2.2 per cent of the total expatriate labour force in the private sector, which stood at 1.7 million as of April.

Mall officials are optimistic about a rise in the number of visitors, despite a low turnout that has plagued shopping centres this week. Muscat’s mall managers were expecting an 80 per cent jump in sales during Ramadan. However, they say that the Holy Month has gotten off to a slow start for the retail sector. Ben Watson, the general manager of Oman Avenues Mall said in an interview with local media that it was normal to have low foot traffic during the first week of Ramadan. “For me, one indicator is foot traffic; so during the first one or two weeks of Ramadan the traffic is a little bit less and then during the last two weeks of

Ramadan and Eid, the traffic is very high. “Ramadan and Eid are the busiest times of the entire year, and this year will be no exception with a range of activities happening every single day during the month of Ramadan. “We are expecting our footfall to rise by 300,000 visitors during Ramdan and Eid.” During Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr, he expects more than 1.5 million shoppers to visit Oman Avenues Mall. Malls are expecting the number of visitors and sales to go up as the month progresses, particularly towards the end of Ramadan and just prior to Eid Al Fitr celebrations. Meanwhile, gold sales in the Sultanate have experienced a slight dip since the economic downturn began, with customers focused on saving money. However, gold prices are expected to bounce back for Eid when shoppers traditionally buy jewellery.

SALALAH RAINS BEGIN AS MUSCAT SWELTERS

hile many of us were sweating in out in the intense heatwave that gripped parts of the Sultanate earlier this week, residents of Salalah and Sarfait have been enjoying cool temperatures and refreshing rain. According to the Oman Meteorology Department, the temperature was about 30 degrees Celsius in Salalah, with the first rains arriving last week as the start of the Khareef season nears. The Khareef season usually begins in July and lasts until September in

the Governorate of Dhofar. Visitors from around Oman and the GCC flock to Salalah over the three months, with many enjoying the comfortable temperatures, lush green landscapes, mist and rain. Salalah experienced its first showers last week, which brought the temperature down from 39°C to a pleasant 30°C. The Oman Meteorology Department has forecast cloudy skies along the coastal areas of Dhofar, with a chance of intermittent drizzle over the course of the next week. Meanwhile, high temperatures and humidity left Muscat and other parts of the country. parched. The hottest day of summer so far was recorded on Sunday (June 12), with the temperature in the capital hitting a high of 47°C. However, the northern parts of the Sultanate were even hotter at 49°C,

while the temperature in Suwaiq hit a scorching 50°C. India has also been hit with record temperatures over the past couple of weeks. The town of Phalodi, in the western state of Rajasthan, recorded a high of 51°C last month, the hottest temperature ever recorded in India. Scientists say the primary driver for the substantial rise in average global temperatures has been caused by decades of greenhouse gas emissions.

Are you talking about the US TV series? No, but we have to say it’s a favourite in our house at the moment. So what’s this about then? It’s about a curry-loving seagull. Excuse me? It seems a curious seagull fell into a barrel of curry powder and needed a little TLC to get cleaned up. Why’s that? Unfortunately, the bird’s feathers were dyed bright orange after the mishap, which is believed to have happened after it tried to snatch a quick taste of curry. What happened? The seagull was found near a factory in Wales, in the UK, and was taken to the Vale Wildlife Hospital & Rehabilitation Centre for a wash. Poor thing! Is it ok? The seagull is back to normal and his rescuers have assured us that there is neither longterm damage nor a sore tummy. However, they did say the seagull smelled great before its wash, so we are guessing there were some curry fans taking care of it. Don’t say: “You smell good.” Do say: “I’ll have a curry in a hurry.” 012

OBE FOR MUSCAT’S

is a long-term resident of the Sultanate. The 63 year old moved to Oman in 1990 with her husband, Professor Bill Dampier Jeans, who helped to set up the Radiology Department at Sultan Qaboos University. Maggie, who had been teaching English and drama in the UK, went on to work at the university as an education officer at the College of Medicine, where she set up the Overseas Elective Programme for medical students among other things. Many of their former Omani students are now heading up departments in hospitals around the Sultanate. Today, Maggie is a prominent figure in Muscat running the British Business Forum (BBF), a networking group, which aims to promote UK-Oman business links. She also dedicates herself to working with the capital’s diplomatic community supporting successive ambassadors from Britain. An Order of the British Empire (OBE) is presented to individuals who have played a major role in business, charity or the public sector. Maggie said that her honour was a recognition that belonged to the Oman community “Muscat is a very supportive and special place,” she said. “I am delighted to receive this award on behalf of a whole host of people and I am determined to work to reinforce the special relationship that already exists between the Sultanate of Oman and the UK. An honour of this sort comes with obligations to put it to work for the common good, which I fully intend to do. “I would also like to acknowledge the support of my late husband, Bill, in everything I have done, who sadly died in November last year.” Maggie will travel to the UK to receive her OBE from Queen Elizabeth or another member of the Royal Family at an investiture ceremony.

Yoga Hosers Cue drumroll: Yoga Hosers is a shoddy, substandard and unpleasant movie. No wait, hear me out. Colleen C (LilyRose Melody Depp) and Colleen M (Harley Quinn Smith) are high school best friends, convenience store cashiers and yoga nuts. They team up with a legendary manhunter (Johnny Depp) to battle with an ancient evil presence that is threatening to ruin their major party plans (hilarious!). While the storyline makes way for an 80s high school comedy flick, there’s nothing to reminisce about here. The duo is made to fight against Canadian Nazis and little creatures made of sausage (don’t ask). The two also have to use the yoga skills taught to them by their instructor, Yogi Bayer (Justin Long) to fight the sausage

villains. The plotline and the dialogues will leave viewers cringing in their seats, so it’s best if you manage to catch some sleep while in the theatre. Yogi, the yoga master’s dialogues include: “Destroy everything that threatens anyone or anything that you love. That’s the yoga way.” And that’s the point: there’s really no storyline or direction to this movie. It’s humourless, plotless and lustre-less. In many ways, it’s also insensitive towards Canadians, and I find it hard to understand how Johnny Depp managed to get tangled up in all this mayhem. Maybe he lost a bet, or lost his wife (which he did) or something. Please stay away from this film. Review by Alvin Thomas

However, just when John hits a dead end, another kid goes missing, and vignettes from John’s past come rushing back. He believes both cases are related. What follows is a two-track pursuit, with the cops chasing one set of clues and suspects, and John on a completely different track of his own. The plotline is excellent and Amitabh Bachchan takes the movie to a whole different level. Te3n is really worth watching.

A young English hitchhiker, Jack (Andrew Simpson), is trying to catch a ride back to the Calais-Dover ferry after his holiday in southern France. On his way, he befriends a fellow hitchhiker Veronique (Joséphine de La Baume), who reveals that the reason they can’t find a ride is because the locals fear a “serial killer” is present among the community. The two run into Grizard (Frédéric Pierrot), a solicitous driver fond of roadkill, who takes them to his mansion that he shares with his wife. Soon enough, Jack and Veronique realise they’re not meant to leave. A must-watch for cult film aficionados.

Next month, three Muscateers will set off from Oman to follow in their footsteps and hopefully make their own personal history in the process. Chris Fisher, program director and presenter at our sister station, Merge 104.8, is joining a charity trek, while friends Heather Duncan, a well-known local lifestyle blogger and mother to

After taking part in the physical Wadi Adventure Race in Al Ain back in January of this year I found myself searching for a new project to keep my training momentum going and not allow myself to get too complacent and lazy. Brainstorming over coffee with my best friend and training buddy, Sarah, we said to each other: “We should do something crazy, like climb a mountain.” And from there, the idea was born. It turns out that both of us had dreams of climbing Kilimanjaro but had never voiced it to each other. From there, we began the planning logistics and arranging the preparations for the big trip. My husband, Colin, is supportive of my extravagant dream trip, although he is quite bored of hearing about it now. He even threatened if I mentioned base layers one more time there would be trouble. He will be taking time off work to stay here in Muscat with our son while I am away so I know that he will be well looked after. For the fitness side of things, I am really enjoying having a training goal to work towards as it keeps me on the right track and encourages me to live a healthier way of life. Due to the extreme summer heat, it is very hard to get outside and hike,

a toddler, and Sarah Cook, a qualified personal trainer, are going under their own steam with an organised tour company on a different route. During the gruelling climb, the three of them will be facing extreme conditions, blisters, fatigue and altitude sickness. Here, in their own words, the three tell why they’re about to undertake the biggest challenge of their lives.

so my training has moved to the comfortable temperature in an air-conditioned gym. I am training four to five sessions a week to prepare my body for this massive task, using a mixture of cardio and strength training for optimum all-round fitness. The only thing that scares me about the trip ahead is the real risk of altitude sickness as we climb higher. We will be taking medication to try to prevent this, but the big unknown is that you can’t predict how altitude can affect each person – some only have mild symptoms of nausea while others have severe headaches, vomiting, hallucinations and worse, even needing to be removed from the mountain. To try to combat this along with the medication, we will be drinking as much water as possible and walking at a slow pace. Preparing yourself with good kit is fundamental – this is the difference between a great experience and a miserable trip. We will be trekking through snow and ice and the temperature at the summit can drop to around minus 20 degrees Celsius – very different to the Muscat temperatures we are used to. From your warming base layers to the boots on your feet, everything has to be correct or something like foot blisters can ruin a whole trip as some days you are walking for eight to 12 hours. The advice given to us

from the leading adventure shops on hiking boots is to wear them for at least 15 walking hours to break them in properly before you even think about attempting Kilimanjaro – it’s not easy in summer to walk in heavy boots, but it’s something that I have had to persevere with. So far, I have managed around 14 walking hours with a couple of good hikes and wearing them in the evenings when I walk my dogs. The boots have even been round the supermarket a few times and out for a coffee date – not fashionable, but I would rather that than painful feet on the mountain. So far, the only thing that has made me question if this project is worth it is the financial side. I knew it was going to be expensive, but I didn’t realise just quite how much once you factor in the cost of the items – goodquality equipment, vaccinations, flights to Tanzania, visa. The cost of my kit for seven days on the mountain has already amounted to RO600. The total cost of the trip will end up costing around RO2,500 to RO3,000. Although the trip is expensive the thought of actually climbing the highest freestanding mountain in the world, and the highest peak in Africa, is hugely exciting to me and I cannot wait for the life experience. And what makes it even better is that I get to bring my best friend with me for the journey!

came to Oman in 2008 to continue my career in the automotive industry, but in 2013 after 12 years in the business, I decided to take a career break and reassess what it was I wanted to do. I found myself filling my time with the gym and also taking small hikes in places like Muttrah and Bawshar. I realised that I was suited to this active lifestyle far more than an office job and in 2016, I qualified as a personal trainer. The thought of climbing Kilimanjaro has been with me for years; but it was always one of those “oh, I would love to do that” type of thing, but I never really thought that I would do it for a number of reasons – fitness, cost and, lastly, no one ever wanted to do it with me! All that changed

one morning in late March over a coffee with Heather, when we discovered it was something we both wanted to achieve. 2016 is the year I turned 40 and I guess I looked back on my life and thought: ‘Ok, what have I done, what do I still want to do and why aren’t I doing it?’ So when Heather and I both said Kilimanjaro, there was no way I was going to miss this opportunity. Choosing July as the time to go meant that we are a little restricted with the outdoor training we can do here in Oman as it is just too hot to be out walking for hours, but July is a good time to climb Kilimanjaro because, although it will be cold, the precipitation levels are medium to low, giving us the best conditions for a successful summit. Heather likes to know everything about our route and watches videos and reads blogs, whereas I would prefer to not know and face it when I get there so I don’t have a worry in my head that on Day 4 there is this obstacle and I am getting nervous about it. I think I perform best when confronted with a situation and I just have to deal with it. I have been asked “why?” a number of times and I guess I have many reasons for doing it. Firstly, I want to challenge myself; I want to see what I can achieve and how strong I am mentally as I know that this is going to be more about my attitude and resilience than it is about my fitness. I want to know that I can keep going and hopefully

stay positive along the way. Secondly, I want to push my body, test my fitness and my nerve. I want to know that I can get up and start walking day after day and push through to the end. And lastly, I want to have an amazing experience. I want to go and see things I haven’t seen before, meet new people and be able to say, “Kilimanjaro? Oh, I did that”.

Wellness Centre in Muscat. Mentally, to be honest, I’m up and down. I’m having good days and bad days. There are days when I’m really excited and really looking forward to it. The support I’ve had has been amazing, really overwhelming, from colleagues, family members, friends and listeners. So in a way I feel that if I don’t summit, I’m letting a lot of people down. It’s a big mental pressure. Last weekend, I had a really big anxiety attack. It took over my mind and I was really questioning myself and doubting myself. I just had to put it all back into perspective and remember why I’m doing this. I’m doing this for me, as well as for the charities. I’m doing this as mainly something for me to achieve, and something for me to look back on for years to come. I can motivate other people when they go on their journey like people are doing with me now. Altitude sickness is probably one of my biggest fears as well. That is something that you read on every single blog of everybody who has been there and it’s something that no individual can plan for. You can have the fittest person in the world, who could be out running marathons, and in the gym for hours a day, and athletes who don’t’ manage to summit because they’re used to taking in a lot of oxygen with their training. I’m trying not to think about not completing it but it is in my mind. You’re having sleepless nights or you’re waking up and the first thing that you’re thinking about is Tanzania and Kilimanjaro. It really has taken over my mind for the past two months. But I have no regrets, none whatsoever. I’m very happy that I managed to sign up with a company that I’ve known from the time I lived in Dubai, a company called Gulf for Good (a Dubai-based charity under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum), which has just celebrated 15 years and they’ve raised over US$3.2 million (RO1.2m) for various causes around the world. There are two organisations here in Oman that I’ll be raising funds for as well. I met our climbing team in Dubai a couple of weeks ago. There are 11 of us in total and they’re a great bunch and I’m really looking forward to climbing up the mountain with them. I will be assigned a climbing buddy from the team when I get there. It’s going to be good, it’s going to be fun, it’s going to be difficult but it’s going to be a great journey to remember. I’m most looking forward to reaching the top. I’ll take a cake up to the top of the mountain and a copy of Y Magazine, too, of course! You only stay at the top for about 15 to 20 minutes because of the altitude. The final day of the trek is the hardest because you’re trekking for about 14 hours on that final day alone. It’s really difficult. It starts from about 1am on Summit Day. irst and foremost, I would like to wish everyone Ramadan Mubarak. It’s that wonderful time of the year when people leave all their worries behind and make an extra effort to get in touch with their spiritual side. This week, I decided to make a small change for my Destination piece, opting to head to Seeb Souk after dusk as opposed to my usual outdoor adventures. With temperatures touching 45 degrees Celsius on most days, it is getting harder for me and my friends (who are also observing Ramadan) to explore areas surrounding Muscat. So, I’m making a temporary switch from my usual daytime explorations. This decision also makes sense as my point of interest – Seeb Souk – only rumbles to life after Iftar, when people are fresh and ready to get some shopping done. Accompanying me for this adventure was my trusted travel buddy, Imran. We didn’t want to be late so we left for the souk right after breaking our fast. This gave us a chance to experience the authentic ambience and atmosphere of the souk, and the people who shop there. Also, this being my first destination for the month of Ramadan meant that I could observe what people were doing in the after hours and how the changes in operating times make a difference. And the souk’s multicultural demography makes for a perfect spot to achieve this. But first things first: if you’re preparing to head to the souk for shopping, brace yourself for a sweaty night. Imran and I quickly agreed that we were a little optimistic in assuming that the Muscat weather would be a little bit more forgiving past sunset. The humidity levels on the night were off the charts and we were sweating profusely. I was scared for my precious camera gear. I think that the souk’s close proximity to the beach - it’s just a short walk away - is the reason behind the sauna-like night air. While the humidity levels in the souqksurprised us, we quickly realised that we were probably the only ones complaining. The number of people who turned up was staggering and shopping spirits were running high here. Of course, I’ve been to the souk countless times before and I know that the atmosphere here is always vibrant, with shoppers bustling around looking for a bargain, traders looking for customers and people scurrying around the streets. It didn’t take me long to find my favourite shot – of a cobbler at a shoe store sipping on a cup of black lemon tea. He was very friendly and even allowed me to photograph him. From his face, I could tell he was extremely tired but determined after his long day, which is true with most shopkeepers around the souk. But I particularly like this shot because his face reflects

his inner strength. Following that, I was on my way across the busy streets, looking for another picture to snap. I notice that it is the shoe and clothing shops that are jam-packed with shoppers, which is normal when families get ready for Eid. Most people tend to purchase new clothes and shoes prior to the occasion. Tailors and cobblers are working overtime here. Among the commotion, I also noticed a tailor working quietly in his shop, probably working on bulk orders. I quickly snapped a photo of him because he seemed to have found a way to shut out the crowds and the distractions away from his work. I have to be honest, I envied his level of concentration as he worked on the cloth, taking measurements and making alterations. Walking around the souk, I also stumbled upon a cat. The little fellow was one of the most beautiful street cats that I have seen. It was elegant and passionate, just like a model staring at the lens and striking a pose. Moving into the darker areas of the souk, I noticed a relaxed atmosphere. More people here hang out with their phones than move about. They were probably texting their loved ones back at home. I distinctly noticed a young man looking at his phone, smiling, as he was typing. It made me realise how much technology has advanced and how it helps keep people and loved ones in touch with each other. Amazing, isn’t it? Time passed quickly. And it was close to midnight. Both Imran and I were hot, tired, soaked in sweat, and ready to leave. But the souk was still very much alive and rumbling. I’m guessing the hustle and bustle would continue until the early hours. I knew that going to the souk would make for some brilliant pictures – and I wasn’t disappointed.
