think it’s safe to say that Muscat’s public bus system has transformed the capital. The distinctive red Mwasalat buses can be seen everywhere these days, busily plying their routes and packed with passengers heading to work and play. Even better news, Mwasalat is planning to introduce another 118 buses onto the city’s roads in 2017 – a remarkable expansion considering it started with just eight buses in September 2015. Since its launch, Mwasalat has carried a total of 3.6 million passengers, many of whom say the service has made a huge difference to their lives in terms of saving money and convenience. But of course, there’s always a flip side and it seems that taxi drivers are continuing to suffer, saying their income has taken a massive hit since the introduction of public buses. In our cover story this week, we take a look at the transformation of Mwasalat, talking to passengers and bus officials alike, as well as cab drivers. It’s a great story and one that is continuing to evolve as the company ramps up its growth plans. es, folks. After eight months of heat and perspiration, winter is actually coming to Oman. And there’s no other way to say this: I’m extremely pumped up for December. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t mind going as far as saying that December is my favourite month of the year. There are two reasons for that actually: for starters, it is Christmas time, and secondly, it’s also the time of the year the temperature actually drops below the 30-degree-Celsius mark in the Sultanate. Last weekend, for instance, I actually had to put on an extra layer of clothing just to keep myself from freezing. No, really! The wind, along with the 18-degree-Celsius temperature made for a very chilly late night walk. But it still would probably have to have been one of my most joyous walks ever. I’ve actually made that a habit too. All I carry with me are my earphones and smartphone. And with Bruno Mars’s 24K Magic and The Weeknd’s Starboy loaded onto my playlist, I really cannot think of a better way to spend my late evenings. Of course, in a few weeks, my pesky little brother will be joining my family and me. So after that, there’ll be a lot of carol singing with family and – my favourite – Christmas shopping. All of this makes way for a very enjoyable winter season this year. However, if I have to do any of that, I have to get rid of this annoying flu that’s been niggling me. And no, I’m still not going to give up on the late-night walks. So if you have any better tips to offer, you know where to find me. I like hot chocolate with marshmallows, if you’re planning to stop by. Cheers!

Dear Editor, The story “Money for Nothing” (issue 447) aptly suits the demonetised Indian currency notes of INR500 and INR1000, which have become redundant, and the very thought of Y focusing on this contentious issue is much appreciated. However, this bold and historic masterstroke decision by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has drawn both acclaim and brickbats. It gave a rude shock to opposition politicians who criticised its timing before the assembly polls in the state of Uttar Pradesh, with life slipping out of gear for a majority who were forced to waste time standing in banks and at ATMs. It also cannot be ignored that more than 50 lives were lost during this impasse. Despite this, there is a lot of support for this move, emanating from the common man to

businessmen, politicians and global leaders. Although a vast majority of Non-Resident Indians have welcomed this move despite the teething troubles and losses incurred, most are still no wiser as to why the Government of India has so far not put in place any mechanism overseas to exchange these demonetised notes. During the two National Day holidays an exchange in Muscat accepted these notes up to a maximum of INR5,000 for just OMR20 – ending up in a loss of INR1,500, which got many NRIs to change them despite incurring a one-third loss. But the most unpleasant surprise of all was the order of the Reserve Bank of India that has prohibited the carrying of Indian currency by NRIs when visiting the motherland. With the restrictions and embargo, coupled with long queues to get cash; it is now a tall order for us to visit our country. Despite all these setbacks, most Indian citizens are supporting this move as it is intended to curb black money, give a jolt to fake currency operators and, above all, curtail cross-border terrorism. It remains to be seen how this service is going to be delivered to the people and how Oman Post will rise to the task. Delivering mail at home involves logistical issues, the involvement of dedicated and trained teams, a commitment to and a quality of service, pricing factors, etc, all of which are challenging. The P.O. Box system has provided some confidentiality to the recipient by not having to provide the physical address and thus lending him or her a degree of anonymity. That mindset needs to be changed and this may not be an easy task!

nvestors have been invited to build a number of fish processing and related plants in Duqm as part of the Government’s RO60 million fish harbour project, the the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries said this week. “We have invited investors to set up 50 to 80 per cent fish processing and related plants in Duqm as the process of building the fish harbor has begun,” HE Dr Fuad Ja’afar Al Sajwani told local daily Oman Tribune. According to the minster, work had already begun on the Duqm fish harbour, which would be the largest in the country and in the region. Alongside the harbour, there would be a fish industrial estate attracting catches from the region and beyond. “It will be a hub for fish processing and export for the rest of the world,” the minister added. The Oman Tribune also reported that 50 to 80 per cent of industrial units would be built in the first phase of the project. According to earlier reports, Galfar Engineering and Contracting Company has bagged the major contract to build the fishing harbor at Duqm. The construction of the Duqm fish harbour is expected to take three years, and will also include a modern fish market, auction hall and other essential facilities. The harbour itself is being designed to meet the needs of Omani and foreign fishing vessels unloading their catch at Duqm. The multi-purpose port can accommodate fishing fleets, ferries and coastguard vessels. 010

ndians are in mourning this week after the “shocking” death of Tamil Nadu’s popular chief minister Jayalalitha, who was undergoing treatment at Chennai’s Apollo Hospital when she passed away on Monday [December 5]. The chief minister, 68, was readmitted to the hospital’s critical care unit (CCU) after she suffered a cardiac arrest earlier on Sunday [December 4], causing tens of thousands of devotees to flock to the hospital grounds. “It is with indescribable grief that we announce the sad demise of esteemed CM,” the hospital said in a statement. Meanwhile, Indian expatriates in Oman were also grieving the loss of “Amma”, or mother, as she is fondly called by residents of Tamil Nadu. She was also hailed as the “Iron Lady” after she challenged the male-dominated political scene in Tamil Nadu. Born in 1948, she began her career as an actress, starring in 140 films from 1961 to 1992. Jagadish B, an expatriate in Oman, who is from the city of Thanjavur, said: “Today is a dark day in Tamil Nadu’s history. “We called her Amma because she showed us the path. OMAN EXTENDS VISA BAN ON CERTAIN JOBS

he Oman Government has extended by six months the temporary ban on the issuing of new visas to certain job categories in the private sector.

A ministerial decision issued by the Minister of Manpower, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Bakri, states that several professions will have a prolonged visa ban. Professions such as cleaners, camel breeders, sales and construction workers will not get a visa for another six months, effective from December 1, 2016, the ministerial decision said. It also said that the Ministry of Manpower also decided not to allow the recruitment of nonOmani workers in carpentry, aluminium workshops, blacksmith and brick kilns from January 2017. The regulations, however, do not apply to A Grade companies.

Is this about Santa Claus? Kind of, but it’s something a little closer to home. What do you mean? Well, a real-estate website in the US, www.zillow.com, has listed Santa’s North Pole home for sale. Seriously? How much? It seems that zillow.com estimates that Santa’s North Pole abode, which was apparently built in 1822, is worth US$656,957 (RO252,928), or US$3,228 per month to rent. That’s a bargain! Absolutely, especially when you consider that it underwent a renovation in 2013, sits on 10 hectares and also houses Santa’s toy workshop, reindeer stables, river rock fireplace and a sleighparking garage – an essential luxury for St Nick. What else? It has an Olde World wooden charm, is perfect for playing games with reindeers and offers modern amenities thanks to its refurbishment a few years ago. And the catch? OK, so it’s not really up for sale. Why? As you know, the festive season is also known as the “silly season” and it seems that zillow.com was simply having a little fun in the lead up to Christmas, even tweeting that the home was expected to stay “off market” for some time. “We don’t anticipate Santa moving any time soon,” it said on Twitter. That’s a relief ! We agree with you on that – we can’t imagine Santa living anywhere else but in the North Pole. Don’t say: “Cracker of a joke.” Do say: “Tis the season to be silly.”

don’t know how you like to spend your Thursday evenings but it seemed that half of Muscat rolled up to the Royal Opera House last week to watch one of the liveliest and most popular shows of the season. It must be two years since a jazz band last got punters into the auditorium to stand and dance on their seats. But that is just what the Mahotella Queens – the legendary vocal trio – did right at the start of their set at the Music & Dance from South Africa performance, which lasted for three hours, and was packed out. Lead singer Hilda Semola Tloubatla and Nobesuthu Gertrude Mbadu Shawe have been singing since 1965, and after five decades of performing they show no signs of slowing down. In fact, their cheeky, hip-swinging, pacey dance moves masked their septuagenarianism. In short, they haven’t lost it, and the audience was thrilled. They were joined by Amanda Nkosi, a younger singer who replaced the original third member, Mildred Mangxola, who was too sick to travel from the “Rainbow Nation”. Their style is clearly influenced by Zulu “isicathamiya” acapella singing with American, minstrel-inspired elements. Of course, the highlight had to be when Hugh Masekela, the 77-year-old trumpeter, composer and singer, took to the stage. After having lived in London away from Apartheid-era South Africa and then in the US for more than two decades, Masekela was a pioneer of the US-influenced African jazz scene, and his fame has spread internationally. Masekela and his brilliant lead-guitarist returned to their South African roots, and the sound was distinctly Zulu- based “mbaqanga”. Masekela’s lung capacity is still astounding and can veer from a finely executed trumpet solo or “head”, immediately into extended scat singing, and apparently without breathing or pause. What a man, and what a legend, right here in Oman! There was nothing lightweight about the themes of the evening as all the performers stressed their peace-based message. Most poignant of all was the Coal-Train Song at the end of Masekela’s set, reflecting the struggles and sorrows of Apartheid-era South Africa. The first half of the show was an all-singing, all-dancing veritable party, although we stayed in our seats. Just as well, as the sheer joy and energy bouncing off the stage was exhausting just to watch. It kicked off to an exciting start with the energetic dance form of “pantsula”. The eight dancers who gyrated to the sounds of the African hip-hop fusion genre, “Kwaito” were a delight, and very easy on the eye in their white trousers! They alternated their numbers with the Mafikizolo singing duo, with three backing singers and seven fine musicians. Theo Kgosinkwe – songwriter, singer and de facto MC for the night – and Nhlanhla Nciza, a stunningly-dressed Afro-Pop star, have been performing together since 1996. Their chemistry is clearly palpable as they regaled the audience with their sophisticated form of Garage Music, with African features. The (red) trombone solo in the middle of the set, during which we could sing along to Wimowe, In the Jungle and Give me Hope, Johanna (Johannesburg) was especially engaging and impressive. The programme was divided into three sections – a journey in reverse – from contemporary dance and song back to the traditional roots, which developed in the black townships of rural, 19th-century South Africa. We were all African that night, and were indulged by this diverse and lengthy cultural celebration. However, I feel that reversing the order of the programme would have given a more flowing and balanced perspective of African music today.

Arrival I’ve been waiting months for Arrival to make its debut in Muscat and I have to say that I’ve not been disappointed. But sci-fi fans who are used to the usual alien invasion films à la the shoot ‘em up style of, say, Independence Day, will be in for a surprise. Arrival, it has to be said, is a gripping movie carried by a brilliantly restrained Amy Adams, who plays linguistics professor Louise Banks. When 12 elongated, egg-shaped spaceships land in key locations around the world, mankind goes into panic mode. And this is where Banks comes in. As a linguistics expert, she is drafted by the army to make contact and communicate with the aliens – but first she needs to learn their language. As the world sits on the precipice of war, Banks finds herself racing against time to solve

the mystery as to why the extraterrestrial visitors have arrived on earth. Based on the short story, Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, this is a thinkers’ movie – it’s about the language of miscommunication, about different cultures, about how people view the world around them so differently from others. Kind of where we are now, in reality. However, Chiang’s novel was published in 1998. Also starring Forest Whitaker and Jeremy Renner, it comes as no surprise that critics the world over are hailing Arrival as the best sci-fi film of the year, if not in years. And I have to agree with them. If there’s one film you should watch this year, it has to this. Review by Felicity Glover

But after crossing a powerful mob boss, Joe heads to Florida, where he finds himself once again on the wrong side of the law. Live by Night is a step away from Affleck’s usual roles – we have to say that Argo, which he also starred in and directed, is one of our favourites – so it takes a little getting used to. Still, we are looking forward to its release next month. Also stars Zoe Saldana, Brendan Gleeson and Chris Messina. Oman release date: January 12, 2017.

ALONG FOR THE RIDE More residents of Muscat are discovering the benefits of taking the bus, but is the service now the scourge of taxi drivers and a victim of its own success? Alvin Thomas finds out

t’s just a few seconds past 6am, and businessman Ameer Mohammed Nasser is already sitting in his usual seat on a Mwasalat bus. It has been just over a year since Ameer gave up his gas-guzzling Nissan Patrol in favour of this service, which runs from his house in Al Mabelah to his factory in Al Hail North. The bus isn’t running at full capacity this morning but the Omani driver is already gearing up for the start of the service, issuing last-minute tickets to passengers scrambling for a seat. However, today is just like any other day of the working week for Ameer. He’s even on friendly terms with the driver. “It’s just the wiser thing to do,” says Ameer, when asked why he now takes the bus instead of driving 022

Most of my employees also opt for the bus now. “Of course, the real reason would have to be the increase in fuel prices. A transformation is evident. Now all that is required is the resources. We need to see more buses soon.” Mwasalat, also known as the Oman National Transport Company (ONTC) currently operates 46 buses in Muscat governorate alone, apart from

his lavish car to work. “Think about it: my house is just two minutes from the bus station at Al Mabelah, and the factory is only five minutes away from the Al Hail bus stop on the highway. “In no country would it make sense for someone to take his or her thirsty car on a daily basis to work, especially if you have the freedom to use the service that the Government is providing us with. “It costs me, on average, at least RO3 worth of fuel if I take the SUV. On the other hand, I’m only paying 200 baisas for a one-way trip to Al Hail, currently. I’ve saved quite a lot since I started taking the bus. “Actually, I took the bus in the very first week of launch of the service, and then I took my entire family. “We were all impressed as it felt like a field trip. It was the first time any of us had ever taken a bus, after all,” he laughs. “When we first took it, I was proud to see the Omani drivers and the Omani training instructors operating the buses. It was a nationalistic moment for us all. “I’ve also never had a problem with anyone on these buses. I’ve actually made quite a lot of friends since I started taking it, too. It’s the perfect

the 37 intercity buses that run from Muscat to Salalah and even the United Arab Emirates. Mwasalat also operates 350 school and college buses in the Sultanate. The Oman National Transport Company (ONTC) brand was relaunched as Mwasalat, and began operations on November 22 last year. Since its inception, the company has ferried an incredible 3.6 million passengers. Officials say that 1.5m passengers have travelled on the Ruwi-Mabela route alone, while 800,000 have travelled on the Ruwi-Wadi Kabir route, and the Ruwi-Muttrah-Qasr Al Alam route has carried more than 300,000 passengers. In total, 3,320,236 passengers have hitherto travelled on the domestic routes within Muscat governorate. Additionally, the company also transported a total of 272,905 passengers over the past year on intercity lines. In an interview to mark one year of operating in the capital, Ahmad bin Ali al Bulushi, the CEO of Mwasalat says: “We have come a long way since we started our operation with a new identity. “Now, the people of Oman know that they will get a bus if they wait for 15 minutes, from 6am in the morning to 9.30pm at night. And therein lies our success.

More are expected to arrive soon,” he says. “We have recruited some of the best drivers too. Some of them already have plenty of experience driving on the roads in Dubai and Qatar so their process of training will be much easier. “We are also putting them through our own training school, which will provide them with a complete overview on how things work around here. “Many of you would also have noticed the buses that are running with the ‘Driver Training’ sign on the buses. These are drivers who are getting a taste of the routes they will be covering in the near future or they are simply testing out the buses. “We have also been hearing that people are not getting the buses on time. This could be because we do not allow standing passengers on our buses. So, if a bus does not stop at a designated stop, then it is probably full.” Earlier, Mr Jackson also told Y about the company’s “possible plans” to purchase double-

decker buses that will run the Ruwi-Al Mabelah route on the Sultan Qaboos Highway. But this plan has been put on hold for the time being. Jeevan M, an IT technician, travels daily from Al Khuwair to Ruwi. He likes to take the bus but is often irritated by drivers who fail to stop. “When the [Mwasalat buses] came to Oman last year, I was very happy. It was a free service for a few weeks and then they began ticketing,” he says. “I used to take the bus everyday in December all the way to March. Then the rush became very intense and the buses just became so late, and they also don’t stop at my stop anymore.” And Jeevan is not the only one frustrated with the lack of bus services in the city. Talking to Y, six builders working at the new Muscat International Airport terminal, have had to resort to sharing a taxi. “We have been contracted for service for over a year now,” one (who declined to be named) reveals. “Initially, we had to rely on the sharing taxis that we used to take from Ruwi. “But when the buses started, we began taking them. They were fast and also on time but now, they’re always late. “We are only one stop away from the Ruwi bus stand but there is never a seat available on the buses,” he adds.

“We are forced to use the taxi services because of this. They charge us RO1 per head to get to the airport. It was much cheaper on the bus.” But there is some good news for passengers travelling within Muscat, specifically from the airport, commercial centres and malls in the Governorate of Muscat: Mwasalat will soon be operating taxis in these locations. The licence provided to Mwasalat also includes providing an on-demand taxi service to passengers within the Governorate of Muscat. To monitor the taxis, Mwasalat will also fix a meter in each vehicle to calculate the fares. An authorised dealer will then calibrate these meters once every six months. Y contacted some airport taxi drivers to get some feedback on the situation. One driver, who wished to remain anonymous, says: “I don’t know why the Government is wasting so much money on this. “We are already regulated. If you check our website, you will see the fares. But if Mwasalat comes and regulates the fares then we all [taxi drivers] will surely stand up against this. “Mwasalat has already taken over the business of the local taxis here in Oman. They have not helped us in any way. When I contacted them, they refused to talk to me as well,” he says, his voice rising in frustration. Another taxi driver, Sulaiman al Balushi, who runs his van from Muttrah to Al Mabelah, says: “We are left with less than RO5 in our pockets at the end of the day after fuel expenses. “Before the new buses came onto the roads, everything was good. Now people want the buses, just because they are bigger and cheaper. I have cut

my rates by 100 baisas to all routes to get some passengers. “Also, we are not even given a proper spot for picking up and dropping off. Because of that we are forced to stop at these bus stops. Now the Royal Oman Police [ROP] is putting fines on those of us who stop at the bus stops. We’re being phased out quickly,” he says gloomily. The news only gets grimmer for these taxi drivers, as “big things are going to happen soon”, according to a senior official from Mwasalat. “We are ordering a total of 118 buses for the Muscat capital,” he says. “We are currently running 10-metre buses on the Ruwi-Al Mabelah route but these buses are limited in space. But we are working to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for everybody. So we will be introducing 12-metre buses in the capital soon. The official adds that there will be a total of 80 buses (both 10 and 12 metres) for the city, and 22 Mercedes-Benz buses for the intercity routes. “We are planning on covering each and every part of the city centre [Muscat governorate] soon. We are working together with another firm to get our route mapped out, and which the new routes will feature in the coming years,” he adds. Currently, the Madrid-based public engineering services firm Ineco is formulating a comprehensive strategy that will chart a roadmap for Mwasalat’s “evolution into an international-class bus operator”, from 2016 to 2040. While the company strives to become the most far-reaching transportation provider in the country, fresh plans have also been drawn up to implement new technology on their buses and ticketing services. In the coming weeks, Mwasalat will be implementing a new “Intelligent Transport System”, which will include a new cargo

system as well as support for ticketless travel. According to the official, the new system will track and monitor every single bus at any given time. This will also enable live tracking of cargo items. “When we launch our new service, we will specifically tag and barcode every single cargo item. We will be introducing a new portal for the cargo systems, which could be used by the sender or recipient for tracking,” he says. “The ticketless transport system, which will make use of smart cards, will also be implemented in 2017,” he adds. Apart from that, the company is also expecting to install a free Wi-Fi service for passengers in the near future. “Also, we’ve floated tenders for air-conditioned bus stations where passengers can wait comfortably and without any hitches. “Our main aim is to make our passengers trustworthy of our service, and provide them with the most of what we can offer,” the spokesman says. “We have grown in folds in the last one year and that’s incredible. Now we’re looking to keep up our service, and the quality of the service, by working on what we have already implemented. That’s our goal. After all, our motto is: your destination is ours.”

FULL CIRCLE Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a year since three men set off across the desert that connects Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. To celebrate, a new book about their adventure is about to be released, which Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Prince Charles has endorsed. Jeevan Blesson reports

n anniversary of an amazing event is being celebrated this month. Three wise men crossed the desert with a particular goal in mind. No, not that one, but a celebration of the efforts of three guys who tackled a 1,292km journey across the Empty Quarter on foot and by camel. British explorer Mark Evans and his Omani companions Mohammed al Zadjali and Amour al Wahaibi took on the 49-day journey a year ago this Saturday. The expedition, which started on December 10, 2015, in Salalah, traversed the Empty Quarter Desert in Saudi Arabia before ending in Doha, Qatar, on January 27 earlier this year. Now a book, Crossing the Empty Quarter: In the Footsteps of Bertram Thomas by Mark Evans, will soon be launched that chronicles their incredible experience.

Combining extensive photography – both archive and contemporary – with an authoritative yet highly readable text, this volume is sure to stand the test of time It should serve as a unique portrait of the region as it was more than 80 years ago and as it stands today. The trio’s journey, blessed by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said Al Said, came as part of the celebrations for the Sultanate’s 45th National Day. It aimed to follow in the footprints of the first-ever recorded crossing in 1930, made by the British explorer Bertram Thomas, and Omani Sheikh Saleh bin Kalut. The Empty Quarter Desert is considered one of the most forbidding areas in the world, covering 650,000 square kilometres of the Arab Peninsula, which stretches over more ground than the land masses of France, Belgium and the Netherlands put together. In summer, the temperature in the desert reaches 50 degrees and hits subzero in the winter. The book was unveiled at the Royal Geographical Society Ondaajte Lecture Theatre

in London. According to Muhammed al Zadjali, it will capture the sheer beauty of the Arabian Peninsula. “People around the world think Arabia is not particularly peaceful after all the wars that have happened here. I hope this book will correct some of that thinking,” al Zadjali says. He also thinks the book demonstrates that strong determination, hard work and good leadership will always lead to success. “The expedition was aimed at reconnecting Arab youth to their culture and heritage, and to help young people realise that little can be

achieved in life without sustained hard work and determination,” al Zadjali says. “Our journey was different. We didn’t want to show that we are the fastest or the strongest. We wanted to reach out to younger people as much as we could or to the people around the world and all those people who came to know about Oman and the beauty of Oman through our expedition.” The trio’s journey has also helped to put Oman in the international spotlight, and another aim was to enhance the long-standing friendship, trust and cooperation between the Sultanate, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Kingdom. And this desire for a magical place, pill or tonic that can prevent or reverse the effects of ageing has generated a new, and growing, field of “anti-ageing medicines”. These days, there’s an array of alternative treatments touted as anti-ageing remedies, from “magical” fruits, wrinkle-erasers, memory enhancers, transcendental meditations, special diets, and physiologic purification to remove toxins from the body. But can we really turn back time? Let us see what the experts have to say about it: Rejuvenating blueberries By temporarily paralysing the muscles that cause wrinkles, Botox has been shown to dramatically reduce the appearance of moderateto-severe frown lines, or furrows, between the eyebrows. However, some research suggests that people who eat blueberries regularly as part of their diet can reap the benefits of fewer frown lines without recourse to treatment. Blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, and raspberries are all packed with antioxidants, which save cells from premature ageing. Antioxidants contain vitamin C or vitamin E, which can prevent or minimise damage to your cells, and thus delay the ageing process. Miracle of magnesium This mineral is vitally important for our energy system, nervous system, heart, and blood-sugar control. The recommended daily allowance is about 300mg to 400mg for men and women but absorption also tends to decrease with age. Dr Jitendra Motavar, of the Specialist Internal Medicine department at Burjeel Medical Center, shares some basic and practical ways to live a healthier, happier and longer life: Protect Your DNA As you age, the ends of your chromosomes become shorter. This makes you more likely to become ill. However, lifestyle changes can boost an enzyme that makes them longer. Plus, studies show diet and exercise can protect them. The bottom line: healthy habits may slow ageing at the cellular level. Be sociable Although this seems common-sense advice, making good friends might help you live longer. Dozens of studies show a clear link between strong social ties and a longer life. Don’t smoke We know giving up tobacco can lengthen your life but by how much may surprise you. A 50-year British study shows that quitting at age 30 could give you an entire decade. Kicking the habit at age 40, 50, or 60 can add 9, 6, or 3 years to your life, respectively. Sleep well Getting enough quality sleep can lower your risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and mood disorders. It will also help you recover from illness

faster. Sleep for fewer than five hours a night and you might boost your chances of dying early. Try a Mediterranean diet It’s rich in fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, olive oil, and fish. The plan can also puts a serious dent in your chances of developing a metabolic syndrome – a mix of obesity, high blood-sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other things that make you more likely to develop heart disease and diabetes. Shed some kilos If you’re overweight, slimming down can protect against diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions that take years off your life. Belly fat is bad for you so focus on deflating that spare tyre. Eat more fibre and exercise regularly to whittle your middle. Let’s walk The evidence is clear. People who exercise live longer on average than those who don’t. Regular physical activity lowers your chances of getting heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some forms of cancer, and depression. It may even help you stay mentally sharp into old age. Ten-minute spurts are fine, as long as they add up to about 2.5 hours of moderate exercise per week. Limit stress You'll never completely avoid stress but you can learn how to control it. Try yoga, meditation or deep breathing. Even a few minutes a day can make a difference. Keep a sense of purpose Hobbies and activities that have meaning for you may lengthen your life. Japanese researchers found men with a strong sense of purpose were less likely to die from stroke, heart disease, or other causes over a 13-year period than those who were less sure of themselves. Last but not least: water Not a food, you say? Think of it as one. Many older people simply don’t drink enough water because they don’t feel as thirsty as they used to, and because they want to limit frequent urination. Water is so underappreciated. Our bodies are mostly water. If you’re chronically dehydrated, just think of what your cells look like. People who complain of things like fatigue and mild headaches and constipation are most often just dehydrated. Aim to drink a minimum of eight to 10 glasses of water per day especially after getting up in the morning. This will clearly improve your vital organ functions, digestion and energy levels. orning drives are the best: there’s something oddly satisfying about taking charge of the wheel before the crack of sunlight. And because you’re out in the early hours of the day, the highways are empty too. It’s a great feeling knowing that you own the roads; there’s no traffic, nobody tailgating you and nothing to actually worry about. Therefore, I start my day at 5am before anyone is even up. Thankfully, Imran stops by my place to accompany me for our latest excursion. Having him on board is a blessing, as he knows his way around even the tightest of gullies around Oman. We decide to head towards the same location as last week, because one of our friends had told us that we had missed a “mammoth castle” by only a few metres during our trip to Bait Al Ghesham. So yet again, it’s an hour and fifteen minutes’ drive towards what is predominantly a part of the Wilayat of Nakhal. Undoubtedly, there is a lot of banter and laughing, as Imran and I like to catch up on weekday stories during our long drives to our destinations. So, for once, there’s no real music in the car, which is good because there’s no fighting over who gets control of the audio player. Upon reaching Nakhal, however, we find ourselves lost and going around in circles in search of the “mammoth castle” that our friend told us of. And after 20 minutes of mucking about, we decide to head off-road in search of the castle. Soon, we stumble upon this ginormous structure, which can only be described as a castle. However, there’s no identification of it being a castle or a fort. We even searched online but to no avail.

Imran steps in to tell me that the Nakhal area has been known to house some of the most amazing forts and castles, and that some of them may not be listed online. The entire setting is stunning, to say the least: everything around the large, light-brown structure is green. There are plenty of palm trees surrounding the entire edifice. Soon, we also learn that the name of the castle is Harat Safala. It’s quite an interesting name, as Harat means “area” in Arabic. Even more intriguing is the layout of the entire castle: this is not your average fort or castle. The inside of the Harat Safala is like that of a maze. It’s not extremely complicated but we find ourselves entering completely disjointed rooms every single time. Imran, being the daredevil he is, actually wanders into one of the rooms, leaving me to navigate myself through the labyrinth of rooms and corridors alone. But,

somehow (I’m guessing the way the castle is created), both of us reunite at the uppermost section of the building. It is here where I actually let loose my inner photographer. I find myself taking pictures of the same object many times, and in various angles. It is one of those rare photogenic places. Standing on top of the castle is quite captivating. It is also thought-provoking to think that there was probably a dignitary living here, decades ago. And just as I am passing into a moment of contemplation, I notice the Omani flag fluttering in the cool breeze. I don’t think there’s anything more patriotic for an Omani. Imran and I stand still in silence, soaking in the sheer beauty of the surroundings that make up Nakhal. And this castle is a symbol of how tight-knit we are as a community, and as a country.

HOW TO GET THERE

Take the Muscat Expressway and when you reach Route 13, take the exit to Nakhal Road. When you reach Nakhal, you will have to go off-road, but the GPS co-ordinates below should ensure that you find the castle easily.

ONCE UPON A SET OF WHEELS Vintage vehicles and retro racers took pole position at the recent OAA Car Show. Alvin Thomas reports

minem is blaring from the speakers in the background and there are hundreds of tuners showing off their souped-up rides to a flurry of youngsters turning up from the far corners of the city. For many of us who like to enjoy a little bass in our music and let our presence be felt with a loud exhaust, this is the ideal weekend hangout spot. There’s everything from extensively modified Nissan 370Zs and GT-Rs to Mazda RX-7s, Toyota Supras and 86s. Some may say that this is a ricer (a person who makes unnecessary modifications to their cars) event, but 040

for others this is heaven on earth. There’s something oddly soothing about turbochargers spooling up and revving the engine to the very redline. And the Car Show, which was recently hosted by the Oman Automobile Association (OAA), is ticking all the right boxes for becoming the ultimate Japanese ricer event of the year. Even the American muscle cars – Dodge Chargers and Challengers, the Chevrolet Corvettes and Camaros – are pushed to the far corners of the OAA track. Somewhere in the arena, there are also some modified Volkswagen Golf GTis and Mercedes

AMGs, but they’re far from being the stars of the show. It’s very clear who owns the show today. But to their surprise, their reign doesn’t last very long. Fast forward to 5pm: Elias Haroon al Zadjali and his friend Abdul Sattar al Maimani, from the Oman Classic Car club, enter the show in what can only be described as the most precious cars in the whole world. Driving into the arena in a Ford Model T – a classic car that first went on sale in the early 20th century – Elias al Zadjali wins over the entire audience. Everyone, from the young to the old and even owners who are

showcasing their cars, come forward to get a glimpse of one of the rarest working models of the car. But, Elias’s collections of cars do not end there. Next to arrive is a shiny blue 1927 Bugatti Type 35B. With its 2.3-litre 138hp engine, the Bugatti may not be up to date with today’s sports cars but when it took the pole position in the French Grand Prix at Le Mans in 1929, there wasn’t any other car to rival it. The next to arrive from his collection is his pristine, classic 1934 Cadillac 355-D. He is accompanied by his friends who also turn up in classic cars ranging from a 1985 Mini

to a rare 1968 Opel GT and even a 1970s Dodge Charger R/T, from the classic movie Bullitt, the American drama– thriller film. The spectators are in a selfie spree, and Elias even allows a few lucky ones to sit behind the wheel of his prized possessions. Hamad, the owner of one of the tuned Japanese cars says: “I know my Nissan won’t take the pole position today but I think my soul would be happy if Elias’s cars take home the trophy. He’s taken immense

care of them, and he deserves it. “By bringing his cars here, he has shown a generation of youngsters cars that existed almost a century ago. He’s doing us a favour by bringing these cars here.” The Ford Model T, the Bugatti Type 35B and the Cadillac 355-D take the first, second and third positions respectively, sending the crowd into a whirlwind of cheers. rom the hectic capital of Bangkok to leisurely island beaches, Thailand is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Thailand is famous for its glittering temples and tropical beaches through to the ever-comforting Thai smile. Its people have a reputation for being friendly and welcoming, adding to the ease of travel within the country. Krabi, a coastal province in Thailand, is known for its unique, geographical features. The province features distinctive, rocky outcrops known as limestone karst, as well as tropical rainforests and mangroves. Neighbouring provinces are Phang Nga, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Trang. More than 100 offshore islands also come under the province, meaning one has plenty of water-related activities to do in Krabi. These scarcely populated islands also double up as an ideal destination for adventure enthusiasts. Krabi is globally recognised for the huge rocks protruding out of the water. Some of the top destinations are Poda Island, Ao Nang and Koh Phi Phi. Most of these islands are a paradise for adventurers, sailors, divers, snorkellers and day-trippersn alike. Krabi was devastated by the 2004 tsunami but the province bounced back as a popular destination very soon afterwards. People hardly talk about the catastrophe now, which shows the resilient spirit of locals who have a passion for life and adventure. AirAsia flies directly from Muscat to Bangkok, from where you can catch a connecting flight to Krabi.

My favourite place Poda Island is clearly a tourist’s delight. It’s easy to bump into people from all over the world. GoPro cameras dominate the area as visitors photograph every moment of their time spent there amid the backdrop of gigantic mountains and emerald seas. It has become a preferred destination for honeymooners as the island is full of restaurants and cafeterias. It is a small island 25 minutes by boat from the beaches of the Raileh peninsula. The sea is exceptionally clean, clear and suitable for swimming whereas the beach is nice for sunbathing. Visitors may also enjoy snorkelling or kayaking as well. Highlights

Wat Tham Suea or Tiger Cave Temple is located about 3km from Krabi Town. Inside the cave there are what appear to be tiger paw prints in the stone. The surrounding area is covered with large trees hundreds of years old, particularly in the Kiriwong Valley. Mountains are on all sides and there are smaller caves in great number. Aside from being the site of a meditation centre, it is also a place of archaeological and historical interest. Stone tools, pottery remains, and the mould for making Buddha footprints have been found in excavations. It is one of the most interesting temple complexes in southern Thailand, as the monks live and worship within a maze of natural caves in an overgrown jungle valley. Wat Tham Sua teaches a form of Buddhism called Vipassana (insight meditation), which is based on the teachings of the earliest Buddhist texts. In the main temple cave you will find bizarre photos of internal organs and split cadavers, which are supposed to reinforce the temporary nature of the body and help the monks to focus on more spiritual matters. The main tourist attraction in the temple complex is the 1,272 step climb up a limestone tower to see the “footprint of the Buddha”. Even if you are in good shape, the heat and humidity make this a difficult hike. Once you make it to the top, you are rewarded with stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside and the Andaman Sea. But watch out for the monkeys, they will steal everything you have. A must-visit is the Sunset Restaurant. The aroma of Thai spices floats through the atmosphere, calling out to the taste buds. Bursting with flavours, the fish platter is not to be missed. Krabi is a seafood haven. Local restaurants prepare shrimps, lobsters, prawns and crabs in Thai spices, and serve them with sauce.

Lowlights The weather. A rainy day in Krabi can spoil your day, as it is known for the adventure activities under and on the sea. Weather-wise, the ideal time to visit Krabi is in late January to March when you can enjoy perfect conditions like calm, glassy seas; clear blue skies; moderate temperatures and only a tiny chance of a shower burst. Souvenirs The sheer number and variety of buying opportunities in Thailand is astonishing. In Krabi there is a night market, which is known as a wholesale store for souvenirs. For tourists, this night market will provide plenty of souvenirs at cheap prices. The night market also provides a lot of nice foods and clothing as well. It is a good place for you to find local products that typify the culture. Where to stay

here’s something about a Tom Clancy game that no other can quite capture. Perhaps that has to do with the fact that Tom Clancy was actually one of the best war-thriller authors in the world. The storyline is quite intense: The Division is set in a near-future New York City in the aftermath of a smallpox epidemic outbreak, and you’re an agent of the Strategic Homeland Division; call it a spin-off Homeland Security, if you may. Your task, as the agent, is to help the group rebuild its operations in NYC and investigate the nature of the outbreak, and at the same time, also hold the city by the scruff of the neck to avoid any form of criminal outbreak. Mind you, it’s easier said than done. Why? For starters, The Division is only available online so your gaming experience will pretty much be linked to the speed of your Internet connection. Expect a lot of hiccups, including dropped frames as well as frozen screens during gameplay. Ubisoft (creators of the game) servers have so far been known to drop players randomly too. But the satisfaction you receive when it all goes right is immense. There’s something oddly satisfying about firing a gun in a desolate city. And the eeriness is sky-high too, with potential danger poised to strike from every direction. This really is one of those games, which you should try before you purchase your next Call of Duty game. here’s a fine line between a sportscar and a supercar, and that line is almost always a few extra zeroes in the pricetag. For instance, a Ferrari or a Lamborghini could cost anywhere between RO90,000 and RO100,000. But do you really have to spend that much to turn some heads and have a bit of fun? Here, we look at three of the best sportscars and supercars that not only give the big boys a run for their money but also cost less than your average Italian nameplate.

But the “Godzilla” isn’t all speed and no corners either. Its complex, four-wheel drive system makes way for almost necksnapping cornering speeds, and it should do that without too much understeer either (but obviously, we’re only speculating on the latter). So how much is all this worth? A mere RO50,000. This has to be the bargain of the century, folks.

It’s been a decade since the Nissan GT-R R35 aka “Godzilla” hit the headlines, and almost half a century since the original Skyline went on sale in Japan. Ever since its inception, Nissan (formerly Datsun) has managed to make some waves with the marque, slowly transforming it into a supercar with exceptional driving dynamics and lot of style – like most of its European and American rivals. For 2017, Nissan has upped the game more than ever before, with a monstrous 3.8-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine pumping out an almost sadistic 565hp and 612Nm of torque. Why sadistic? We’ve driven the previous generation GT-R enough to know that it was mind-bogglingly quick. We even managed to clock a 0-100kph time of 3.8-seconds – in summer! There are reports that suggest the new GT-R will

Why do we think the F-Type is the coolest sportscar ever made? It’s partly because it is actually reminiscent of the classic E-Type Jaguar, and partly because it looks seductive. With its long hood and wide rear haunches, the F-Type never fails to astound us when prowling around the streets of Muscat. There are two variants available; namely, a V6 and a V8. Both are extremely potent and mighty quick, with 375hp and 542hp respectively. But the party piece of the car has to be the exhaust. We understand that it takes more than one component to make a car. However, the F-Type is known for its throaty exhaust that even crackles and pops at the traffic behind you – much like having an angry

dog bark at traffic on your weekly drives. Get it in convertible form and you’ll find yourself driving with the top down more often. Starting from RO25,000, this really is one of the best cars to come out of the UK.

Ford Mustang GT

The original 1965 Ford Mustang was arguably the daddy of all muscle cars. However, the sportscar, which is now in its sixth generation, is still considered to be the definitive V8 muscle car, and also a possible cure for ecomentalists. Sure, the car now comes in a V6 and also in a four-cylinder moniker but it’s still the V8 that we’re interested in. We’ve taken the car out on many occasions and feel it is still the perfect way to have some fun without breaking any speed limits and also without breaking your wallet. The drivetrain of the Mustang is extremely engaging and there’s plenty of power on tap too – 435 ponies, to be precise. Moreover, the interior and the overall fit and finish have come on in leaps and bounds over those in previous years too so it is a pleasant place to be. The new independent rear-suspension also makes way for a pleasant experience on corners, in comparison with the previous generation’s live-axle. Now you know why the Mustang, from just RO15,500, is one the most sold sportscars in the country.
