ON STAGE SEPTEMBER 2014 – MARCH 2015

WELCOME These are exciting times for us here at York Theatre Royal. A theatre has operated continuously on this site since 1744. Within our walls we also have remains of a 12th century hospital, an entrance to the 15th century mint and even a Roman well. It is impossible to walk our stairways and corridors without feeling a deep connection to its history and the centuries of York citizens who have shared the experience of live theatre. However, the best thing about York Theatre Royal is that, whilst we are extremely proud of its heritage, it is not a museum. The Theatre you see here today has evolved over the last 270 years adapting to its audiences and its actors to ensure that it is always delivering the best experience for everyone who uses the space.

In March next year, we close in order to undertake the next stage in our Theatre’s evolution; you will find a lot more detail about our plans in this brochure, but, in a nutshell, what we are planning is more space in our foyers and better views within the auditorium. The building won’t be closed for long and our panto dame Berwick will be back to launch the new Theatre in December 2015 and we certainly won’t be going away – we have some very exciting plans for presenting great work in other venues whilst the Theatre is undergoing its transformation. But that is all for the future, in the meantime we welcome you to another packed season of entertainment and look forward to seeing you here soon.

ANTIGONE A new version by Roy Williams Director Marcus Romer Designer Joanna Scotcher

When Creon refuses to bury the body of Antigone's unruly brother, her anger quickly turns to defiance. Creon, in an attempt to retain control, condemns her to a torturous death - she's to be buried alive. Acclaimed playwright, Roy Williams (Kingston 14, Sucker Punch), takes Sophocles' play and by placing it into a contemporary setting brings Thebes into the 21st Century, reinforcing this tales relevance and vitality. This is a timeless story about loyalty and truth, human nature and human behaviour. It is a story about what happens when one person stands against the rules. About how we make meaning out of life and death and what, in the end, really matters.

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE By Gilbert and Sullivan

The Pirates of Penzance tells the story of young apprentice pirate, Frederic, and his attempts to escape a life of crime. On a rocky Cornish sea-shore we meet the eponymous pirates and their charismatic Pirate King. The arrival of an unbelievably large number of Major General Stanley’s daughters brings chaos – and eventually, Sergeant of Police and his men – into the pirates’ previously idyllic existence. Gilbert satirises the nobility, the military, the police and the supposed virtue of a ‘sense of duty.’ The marriage of his words and Sullivan’s music gives us such gems as ‘I am the very model of a modern Major-General’, ‘When a felon’s not engaged in his employment’ and ‘Poor wand’ring one’.

So when Marlow is tricked into believing Kate’s ancestral home is a country inn, and mistakes Kate for a lowly barmaid what could possibly go wrong? Plenty. Set against the increasingly chaotic proceedings of one very long night, She Stoops to Conquer is a delightful romantic romp filled with ludicrous misunderstanding, mischief and mayhem. Good versus evil is put to the test when two fairies battle for supremacy. The bad fairy claims any human being can be corrupted; the good fairy throws down a challenge and chooses Old Mother Goose as an example of all that is good and cannot be corrupted. The bad fairy sets off to prove the good fairy wrong. So begins yet another classic panto ‘tale of the unexpected’, a tale to mystify your senses, a tale to tax anyone’s credulity, but above all a tale that will have the whole family enthralled in a world of laughter that never ceases. ‘I declare that there is disorder here! Things can’t go on like this, can’t go on…You must have some training. You must learn everything.’ Ingmar Villqist’s Helver’s Night is a thrilling and gutwrenching play that charts the relationship between Carla and her young charge, Helver. Helver is fascinated by fascism – not by the ideology, which he is unable to grasp, but by the bravura of the movement. WHERETHE WHITE STOPS Following a critically acclaimed run in Edinburgh and a sell-out run at The Bush Radar Festival, winners of the Ideastap-Underbelly Award 2013 and nominees for The Stage Ensembe Award, Antler Theatre bring their show Where The White Stops to York Theatre Royal’s TakeOver Festival. No-one's been into the White before. Except Crab. Battling against icy blizzards and mythical beasts, Crab leaves the safety of her village to journey across a vast and desolate frozen landscape. She's searching for something else. Where the White stops.

With over an hour's worth of new material, go gently...it'll be a good night!

HANGING HOOKE A SOLO PLAY ABOUT ROBERT HOOKE by Siobhán Nicholas, performed by Chris Barnes, research support from Joanna Corden at The Royal Society ‘the most wonderful piece of new writing I have seen in years‘ Plays International Christopher Wren loved him. Isaac Newton loathed him. Robert Hooke was an artist, scientist, engineer and architect. As Curator of Experiment, he poured out a stream of brilliant concepts for the Royal Society. Yet after his death, England’s Leonardo was written out of History; even his portrait mysteriously disappeared. Was this ingenious man buried by another Da Vinci plot? Then in 2006, a three hundred year old manuscript was accidentally discovered in a cupboard in a country house in Hampshire! This is a tale of intrigue and betrayal that explores the captivating 17th century world of new science and discovery.

MORE TALES FROM KAFKA Based on the work of Franz Kafka Adapted and directed by Juliet Forster Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Franz Kafka. Drawing on a rich vein of early writing and less well-known short stories, this extended and redeveloped play, first seen at York Theatre Royal in 2010, presents a layering and interweaving of eerie dreamscapes. It is shot through with Kafka’s hallmark foreboding and alienation, absurdist humour and struggling humanity. Out of Character make challenging work for inquisitive audiences with the aim of transcending the boundaries of modern theatre and your perceptions of mental health. The fine line between madness and genius, inspiration and medication. On previous productions: ’…one can feel the intensity and the personal involvement, this lends depth and a real poignancy to the performance.‘

MR PUNTILA AND HIS MAN MATTI

THE CIRCLE OF CHALK

By Bertolt Brecht Translated by Lee Hall Director Natalie Quatermass

From the Judgment of Soloman through to Brecht’s post-war setting in the Caucasus, the story of the chalk circle tells the gripping tale of a child contested over to decide who its true mother is.

Puntila, a rich landowner, suffers from a divided personality – when drunk he is human and humane; when sober, rude and self-centred. He plays havoc with his workmen, his women, his daughter’s marital arrangements and the loyalty of his sardonic chauffeur, Matti. Brecht has produced an extraordinary comic parallel about a world at peace, but riven by the stubborn realities of the class divide. A lesser known comic masterpiece, with songs, biting wit and physical humour – Puntila is one of Brecht’s finest works.

By Henry Raby Director Julian Ollive

This classic morality masterpiece will be retold within a contemporary context, exploring what still forges family ties in the direst of circumstances.

Poetic verse collides with a masterful score of dark folk and blues songs, orchestrated live by an actor-musician cast. STUDIOTALKS As part of the International Centre for Art and Narrative, York Theatre Royal and York St John University jointly curate a series of talks. For each event we bring together different voices that provide different perspectives for an engaging, stimulating and convivial evening of debate.

Narrative, Women and Prisons Prison is a place that can strip women of their identity and sever narratives of self and belonging. Resettlement is a process of rebuilding those narratives through helping women reestablish their connections to families and communities. This event will bring together perspectives that speak of the lived experience of prisoners, the use of arts practice to assist resettlement and understandings of the importance of identity and narrative in the resettlement process.

Monday 20 October 7.00pm

Narrative, Art and Democracy Can you have a democracy without art? Drawing together speakers from the world of Education, Theatre and Community Practice, this talk will explore the connecting points between narrative, the arts and democracy.

Monday 3 November 7.00pm Free to attend but please book via box office.

A NEW WAY TO SUPPORT THE NEXT 270 YEARS OF YOUR THEATRE A theatre has been operating on this site since 1744. In 1769 the legendary theatre impresario Tate Wilkinson had the vision to purchase a Royal patent for £500 (£32,000 in today’s money) and the Theatre has been ‘Royal’ ever since. What stands here today, however, is not a museum; it is a thriving and vibrant space still doing what it did when it first opened – presenting great drama and culture for the citizens of York and beyond. With investment and support from the wider community York Theatre Royal has continually evolved to ensure it remains a dynamic theatre of which the city is quite rightly proud.
