WHO'S NEXT WINNER

It has been a year since the production presentation of YG’s survival program [WIN: WHO IS NEXT], which was designed to unearth new artists. And finally, YG’s new boy group, WINNER,is unveiled. Consisted of 5 members – KANG SEUNGYOON, LEE SEUNGHOON, KIM JINWOO, SONG MINHO and NAM TAEHYUN –WINNER is filled with all-rounders who are incredibly talented in writing, composing, choreographing and producing. The five have garnered much popularity on the survival show with their charming styles, looks, voices and extraordinary choreography. Between the two promises YG made to the public, “time” and “quality album,” YG decided to

place greater importance on the “completion” rather than “time.”

Thus it took longer than expected until WINNER’s debut album “2014 S/S” came to light. WINNER’s debut album “2014 S/S” is ready to answer all the questions the world had for YG’s newest boy group.

Korea, like everywhere else, is no stranger to reality shows for unknown singers. Last year's WIN (Who Is Next) was different. Unlike The X Factor or American Idol, where real talent is mixed in with amusingly-bad hopefuls, every contestant in WIN was destined for success. The show’s 11 male contestants were all signed to YG Entertainment, home to K-pop innovators such as 2NE1 and BIGBANG and one of the most powerful record labels in Asia – arguably the world. Divided into Team A and Team B, they were set in ruthless competition. The public eventually crowned Team A victorious, who were subsequently renamed WINNER after their success on the show.

To boot, all members have writing credits on their debut album 2014 S/S unheard of for a new Korean group which combines sophisticated pop ballads like “Color Ring” with the genre-mashing “Don't Flirt” and confident hip hop centrepiece “I'm Him”.

ULTIMATE GROUP

BIGBANG

Since their debut in 2006, BIGBANG has worked hard to establish themselves as cultural icons, rather than just another boy band. G-Dragon, TOP, TAEYANG, DAESUNG, and SEUNGRI have set themselves apart from their peers by selfproducing many of their hit songs, from the early classics “Last Farewell”, “Haru Haru”, “Sunset Glow”, and “Lies” to more recent charttoppers such as “Tonight” and “Fantastic Baby”. BIGBANG are trendsetters of the Korean music scene, having considerable influence on both music and fashion alike. They did away with the stereotypical stage costumes often worn by other singers in favor of clothing that is BIGBANG reflective of each member’s

6

unique personality. G-Dragon, TOP, TAEYANG, DAESUNG, and SEUNGRI have all engaged in solo activities that utilize their individual and distinctive talents as singers, MCs and actors to thrive in every area of the entertainment world. All five members are as equally successful in their respective solo efforts as they are as a group, which is further proof of their endless talents. In 2011, BIGBANG returned to the music scene after a two-year hiatus with the release of their 4th mini-album “Tonight,”

which received great reviews from fans and critics alike. They immediately followed up with that successful come-back by releasing their latest mini-album, “ALIVE” in 2012. “ALIVE” is the perfect display of BIGBANG’s growth and maturity as singers and producers over

the course of their career and is a testament of their efforts to continuously progress, rather than idle at the top of the music scene.

GD TAEYANG GOOD BOY Music video of group BIGBANG member GD X TAEYANG’s “GOOD BOY” has surpassed 23 million views on YouTube. World-famous music video director Colin Tilley directed the music video of “GOOD BOY”, and its colorful visual and unique camera work have caught the eyes of many people. “GOOD BOY” swept music charts upon its release on the 21 last month and was selected as one of American FUSE TV’s “November Best Dance Song Top 10“, to take rank with famous foreign stars. The song was also introduced by American Billboard who said, “’GOOD BOY’s music video was ranked in the first place among the most watched K-pop music video in the United States and the world during this November”, to draw a big attention. Meanwhile, GD X TAEYANG caught the eyes of the audience of SBS GAYODAEJEON, with their overwhelming performance and rapping.

As K-pop only male solo acts with Billboard 200 chart entries, it should come as no surprise that a collaboration between G-Dragon and Taeyang (aka GD x Taeyang) was the video fans watched most on YouTube last month. But five acts tailed closely behind. As we do every month, let's dig deeper into the top-viewed K-pop vids of last month. Tapped to help announce the 2015 YouTube Music Awards, the duo's "Good Boy" video was the most watched of last month's batch of K-pop visuals both in America and around the globe. The clip already amassed more than 15 million overall views making it one of 2014's most watched K-pop clips overall. Last week, the booming club banger hit No. 1 on Billboard's World Digital Songs.

Looking further down the lists, the following five acts all ranked within Nos. 2 through 6 with different places depending on what territory we look at. GD and Taeyang's labelmates Hi Suhyun, a fellow duo consisting of Lee Hi and Suhyun of Akdong Musician, see their "I'm Different" video, featuring Bobby, at No. 2 in America and No. 3 worldwide.

2NE1 NEW EVOLUTION 2NE1, made up of members CL, DARA, BOM and MINZY, burst

onto the music scene like a comet in 2009 with their electronicinfluenced debut hit single “Fire”. 2NE1 used their unique style and sound to poise themselves as a girl group different from the rest. Their songs reflect the members’ independence and confidence as women, with songs like “I Don’t Care” and “Go

World” award. Next up for 2NE1 is “2NE1 New Evolution”, their first world-wide tour which was produced in conjunction with Live Nation. In 2NE1's debut EP 2NE1 , the group was noted to have a distinct, mixed style. While "Lollipop" was categorized as for pop, debut single "Fire" is predominately influenced by hip hop. "I Don't Care," however, was intended as a song with a reggae feel.Their comeback album, To Anyone, was marked by a strong shift into electronic music. "Go Away", the

Away” providing the anthems for females of all ages. Their cutting-edge music and unique fashion style led to collaborations with artists such as will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and world-famous fashion

most successful promotional single from the album, is classified as dance. However, songs like "It Hurts (Slow)" are R&B, another style that also characterized their first EP.The three title tracks, "Clap Your Hands," "Go Away," and "Can't Nobody" were noted for their

designer, Jeremy Scott. In 2011, 2NE1 proved that their talent has

2014 BEST ALBUM Crush

Almost two years after K-pop first giddily barged into America's imagination, the genre hasn't sustained a post-"Gangnam Style" wave, but the Seoul machine keeps humming. Female foursome 2NE1, buoyed by a cameo on The Bachelor, moved more units of their album in its first week of release than any previous Korean act. That was about it for sales records, but the album itself was no stiff; in fact, it's a canny downshift from the wigged-out "I Am the Best" maximalist mash-ups of the past. "Happy" is a sunny, strummy jaunt with no manic gimmicks and the ballad "Good to You" soars and sweet-talks likably. But Crush's centerpiece is "MTBD," which spotlights group member CL on a bratty squirt of EDM-hip-pop with a bubblegum trap groove. C.A.

Released in February, Crush became K-pop's highest-charting album while also earning the best first-week sales for a release. The set hit No. 61 on the Billboard 200 -- 2NE1's first entry on the chart. In addition to being named Billboard's No. 1 K-pop album of 2014, Crush also made it onto Rolling Stone's 20 Best Pop Albums of 2014 and Fuse's 40 Best Albums of 2014 lists. In 2014, 2NE1 has found a remarkable amount of Stateside recognition. This included their Korean single "I Am the Best" garnering U.S. radio play ("I Am the Best" was previously released on a 2011 EP), topping Billboard's World Digital Songs chart, a sync in a Microsoft commercial, a feature in NYLON magazine, appearances on The Bachelor and America's Next Top Model, plus ranking as one of two acts representing K-pop's best showing yet on the year-end World Albums Artists chart.

After breaking multiple chart records earlier this year, 2NE1 cap off 2014 with one more boundary-pushing victory. The girl group's Crush album ranks at No. 11 on Billboard's year-end World Albums chart. It's the first time a K-pop act has notched an entry on the annual ranking that was first in 1995.
