ACADEMIC WORK


SMOOTH MOVEMENT SMOOTH AND FLUENT EXPERIENCE BETWEEN TUBES The first consideration of this design is to create a smooth and fluent expeirience of visting the exhibition. So the first thing that needs to be considered is the circulation in this tall building. Therefore, the soft tubes have been a way to connect the whole building. Three tubes are generated to connect the entrance, the outdoor garden and the big windows which are important nodes of the entire circulation. The space that is defined by the extior envelope and tubes is filled by four soft volumes which are four galleries with curved surface as the wall and ceiling together. The experience in the volume, in the tube, and from the tube to the gallery is also smoothy because of the shape of the volumes. There should be a big window where a tube hits the envelope. Then the same element repeats and spread to the entire front facade. When the unit goes to the part that needs more light, it becomes bigger. Generally from the top to the bottom, the size of the unit is gradually changing from big to small, less to more. Also the rounded square form is used on the side facade as a repetitive pattern, which makes the whole building have the same language of openning. The interior volumes are intresting because of the soft shape of each gallery. And the pattern of the facade reveals how the tubes look like inside the building. Except for the rooms that are formed by the inner surface of the volumes, there is also a big multiple stories space which is formed by the outter surface of the voulmes and tubes. The big interior rendering shows this space whichi is also a very interesting space for gethering people.

The rounded square elements spread from the front facade to the side facade to create a big area of windowes to let the light into the core hall. And the pattern is generated according to the need of light using GRASSHOPPER.

ARCHITECTURAL PROPOSAL



SOCIAL STRATA SUPERTALL 500M EXPERIMENTAL SKYSCRAPERS EXPLORATION

This project is made in the SuperTall grad design studio co-taught by Alvin Huang and Yansong Ma ( 马 岩 松 ) + MAD, assisted by Erin Cuevas The studio explores the design of experimental skyscrapers of over 500m in height in NYC and Shenzhen that challenge the conventions of the traditional hi-rise typology as a symbol of power and economic prosperity through the integration of nature and humanity. The design in New York City is mean to criticize the capital driven social phenonmenon by making a tower go extremely ineffective in occupying the sky with more than only one penthouse which means it’s going to be supertall and go extremely effective in driving the maximium profit. In order to make a strong comparision to the New York Pent-tower, these two towers are made by having the similar appearance but the totally opposite proposal. The design in Shenzhen is mean to state the reality in Shenzhen by making a tower which has a large amount of tiny units where only has a bed for sleeping and a bathroom.

New York: Pent-Tower Since the U.S is a capitalist country in which there is a big diffrence between the rich and the poor. And penthouse is getting more and more popular among rich people. Based on the graphs on the left, the price of penthouse that rich people can afford is even larger than the sum of remaining floors of the same tower. Therefore, This design can not only help the developer make more profit but also satisfy more rich people’s needs of living in a penthouse. Shenzhen: Parti-Tower On the other hand, in Shenzhen, even though it is also make economic be driven by market, China is also a socialist country. As Shenzhen is a very new city where most young people come in town to find a job mostly in technology firms. What is happening in this city is the owners are spliting the one unit apartment into several units each of which have only one room for sleeping. Therefore, the design in Shenzhen is mean to state this reality by making a tower which has a large amount of tiny units where only has a bed for sleeping and a bathroom. This design can not only satisfy the young tenants’s needs of lower rent and more communication between them, but also make more profit based on the left diagram.

We made everything extreme, that is just a unit that can hold a bed and a bathroom, while other utilities are being shared. And all shared utilities and amenities are placed at the shared level, providing parks and outdoor space, while units are located in tubes that are connected to the central core with bridges. As the model shows on the left, the tower is support by several thin and tall columns. Each one of them is a tiny tower full of tiny flats which are less than 10 square meters. And the big stages inserting along the tower are the public space which have restraunts, gyms, grocery stores, libraries, parks and so on. It’s like the big platform is the living room of each units. The difference is it’s shared. In order to make a strong comparision to the New York Pent-tower, we tried to make these two towers have the similar appearance but the totally opposite proposal. For instance, the tiny columns in pent-tower which is only the elevator are the main private living space in Parti-tower. While the big cloud which are private penthouses in Pent-tower is now shared public space in Parti-tower. The aim of this project is not to say this is a way our society should be heading to, instead is demonstrating how extreme this can go towards and rethink about what an architect’s role should be at the present moment. Maybe we are not able to do a lot ourselves, but if we – as architects do not stand out against these monstrous social norms, who will ?


GRAPHIC NARRATIVE | Pent-tower NYC | Living in Extremely Exclusive & Private


This is a comic narrative trying to stress the different conditions of the two proposals by imagining two young men’s life after work living in the two towers. While they are enjoying whether the extreme privicy in NYC Pent-tower or the extreme social activities in SZX Parti-tower, both of them, ironically, realise the bad aspects of the extreme seeks in both capitalism and socialism.

This is a project I did as team leader to design a container book bar for the school campus of my undergraduate school.

The idea is to make full use of three limited containers and create a kinetic container building with variable space.

Bar Counter Outdoor Space or Outdoor Stage

Turn up one of the plane of the second container and make it as a roof to increase the space.

Pull out a part of the third contaner and use other waste steel plate to fill it up.

DESCRIPTIVE AND COMPUTATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL MODEL | Technique: Lasercutting

This diagram drawing and the diagram model is made in a course called Descriptive and Computational Architectural Geometry, which is instructed by Dr. David Jason Gerber. Descriptive and Computational Architectural Geometry aims to address the various natures of the historical relationship between mathematics, geometry, computation, and architecture. Through the display of historical mathematical models with formal affinities to contemporary architectural poduction, the course wil provoke discussion about the relevance of a history of form, the origins of design technique, the epistemology of geometry models, and the justification for mathematicla surfaces in architecture.
