My own way of thinking is a dialectical process of deconstruction and reconstruction of knowledge and understanding. An uncompromising attitude has been built up through the critical and systematical way of observation. Architecture is not the ultimate achievement, but a medium and platform communicating to the world and to the time. As an urban explorer, the multiple roles, architect and photographer, bring me variation of the prespective to observe the daily life. Creativity and enthusiasm are inspired by those experiences. As an architect, with the previous experiences, I am traveling around the world, exploring the potential and discovering the opportunity as much as I can.

Interaction, Comm nication, Co esion While Tencent’s products, like QQ, are based on increasingly virtual methods of communication, physical proximity has not lost its relevance for creative interaction. The consolidation of all staff in a single volume defines the overall identity of headquarters, the internal functionality and flexibility of its internal workspace, and the interaction, communication, and cohesiveness of its staff.

Phase 1 of Z-Park is nearly completely, while the masterplan for Phase 2 is nearly finalized. In both phases, the Zhongguancun Software Park planning indicators enforce an overall height limitation, due to the satellite receiving stations in the north. This dictates a low-rise, campus-like urban fabric within the Z-Park. In addition, low maximum site coverage dictates compact buildings and residual open space.

Tencent’s plot is located at the southwest corner of Phase 2. The Main Lobby is located at 1F in the northeast corner. The northeast corner is highly visible towards the inside of Z-Park and is also somewhat sheltered from the northwest winter wind. The entrance from this side was chosen because vehicle traffic circulation is most efficient from the north. It was also important to create more pleasant pedestrian environment for the south due to its more advantageous exposure in the winter.

As the Cultural Center aims at embracing the region’s cultural heritage, the landscape celebrates the regional’s natural heritage. A complementary selection of four local landscapes is used as inspiration to layout a wide diversity of sensorial experiences for the visitors.

s rie da un bo

1. The “volcanic hills landscape” immerges the Art Village in a lush & refreshing nature. A man-made topography inspired by the smooth lines of the land sculpted by lava provides shelter from the noise coming from the road while these hills fade into dunes as they reach the Western beach. Beach pavillion

2. The “farmland” geometry is used as inspiration for a botanical park in which vegetation is tamed and aligned with the city. Among stretches of colorful plant species in display, sports fields, play areas and picnic pockets invite people to get active and discover new blooms at every visit.

Exercice facilities

Our response aims to deliver on a commitment to bring programs together, bring people together and provide a solution that is representative of the changes Zhanjiang is undergoing, while at the same time introducing generous amounts of natural landscape, a microclimate and usable public spaces.

3. The “water fields” landscape is reinterpreted as a collection of basins of different scales and programs celebrating different forms of water. Hosting the Movable Water-stage and the Marine Culture Zone, this part of the shore is kept simple and opened to the view of the Theater from the sea.

Tencent’s plot is located at the southwest corner of Phase 2. Initially Tencent acquired 5 plots, however, 4 plots have now been consolidated into a primary plot (P-1) and a satellite plot (T-2), separated by Z-Park Vertical One Road. Baidu and Lenovo have similarly consolidated several plots for their future headquarters located to the north of Tencent.

4 Local Landscapes As Inspiration

Whereas Cultural Centers tend to become a single consolidated building or a campus of separate buildings, our proposal for the Zhanjiang Cultural Center aims to offer benefits of both.

Lattice As the most ambitious urban gesture in the proposal, the lattice serves a shading function, providing what is possibly the largest shaded outdoor space in all of Zhanjiang, aiming to transform what could typically be an impractical and exposed condition into one that provides a comfortable outdoor microclimate throughout the day. Public decks on the Lattice provide views over the city and the bay and provide space for special experiences.

4 Buildings The Zhanjiang Cultural Center is envisioned first, as a series of separate buildings, each with a distinct design consistent with its function and providing its own identity. However, the design treads middle ground, providing benefits of both separateness and consolidation by clustering the buildings together and introducing a unifying element, a lattice. This strategy allows for continuous physical connection and shared spaces whilst retaining separate identity and operation.

About geometry, oriented as an extension of settlements, TAMED NATURE

About the artificial way civilisation copes with the water fluctuations for aquaculture

As the landscape initial strategy is to enhance the performance of the architecture in terms of passive cooling and microclimate, this functional relationship between the built and the grown is further detailed in a performing symbiosis. warm air drawn up naturaly

The Theater is the most iconic major program, placed at a strategic location it becomes the Lighthouse at the waterfront. Its volumetric projections in three directions are representative of the three theaters. The theaters share a backstage, which consolidates their back areas but also allows for potential combination of their audiences during a single shared performance.

Ramp’s Adaptive Strategies to Programs: Building Flat Plaform on Ramp Easy to Achieve

Example: Exhibition

The Public Loop serves as a route throughout the major programs that is accessible to all and selectively allows visual access to the inner workings of functional spaces. In addition, the Public Loop navigates through each building in a manner that is intrinsic to its geometry. Each individual Public Route leads directly up to the bridge level, 20 meters above ground. Here, all major programs are connected in a networked configuration that serves as a Grand Lobby space beneath the lattice.

U P

The Lattice serves as a connector between the major programs. Once the visitor is on the higher floorlevels, there is no need to go back down, if another program wants to be visited next. The Lattice also provides public accessible viewing decks on top. Each of them offers distinctive programs and diffrent views towards the surrounding.

U P

The Museum reinterprets what is typically a continuous promenade through a series of gallery spaces by introducing a spiraling typology that retains continuity but dissolves vertical circulation. As such, it introduces a new typology of Museum as a single continuous slab that provides a seamless connection among all programs. Externally, its circular arrangement provides 360 degrees of visual access to the surrounding conditions.

IDEN I IES

It is often the case that cities are known for a singular trait or characteristic. This is the case with many of Ningbo’s neighboring cities and provinces; cities which excel in one particular area, and therefore their identity is entirely based on one aspect of their urban environment. Ningbo, on the other hand, has an extremely rich cultural heritage, and at the same time is a highly successful contemporary city, exceling in many areas and industries; thus, the city’s identity is not singular, but instead layered.

Known as the Venice of the East, Suzhou in east China’s Jiangsu province is praised for its lush gardens and enchanting waterways. ----The Times(2011.11)

CITY IDENTITIES Ningbo is a layered city: one of China’s earliest urban settlements, the city has a strong cultural heritage, excels in many areas and industries, boasts a successful Port, welcomes domestic and foreign migrants.

ACHIE ING DIFFEREN IA ACHIEVING DIFFERENTIATION Concerns have been raised over the homogeneous approach adopted by many city governments to urban development. In the race to create modern 21st century economies, most cities are pursuing very similar strategies and visions, and often have the same templates for the development of their CBDs and business zones. Policy differentiation will be a key competitive advantage for the city.

TRAFFIC In reaching to grow, Chinese cities have often adopted an extremely homogeneous approach to development. Evidence of this has been published in both Chinese and Western press, pointing out that cities often aim for a generic CBD, and strip themselves of any authenticity or focus on the city’s heritage and historic culture.

1000 CITIES 1 LOOK “Originally, China had many beautuful cities. (But) they demolish everything...they built a very wide road system. Then they give it to a development company to build a high-rise apartment building. Suddenly we let every Chinese city become (a) big suburb.” ----Wang Shu

In this part of the city, we propose to connect the existing retail and upgrade the facades along Zhongshan Road to create a High Street; made stronger by the fact that Zhongshan Road is diverted and the path becomes pedestrian only. The High Street will feature a wide range of retail and commercial offerings, in addition to restaurants and small commercial and office space. Adjacent to the river, two plazas (one formal, and one large public space) will enhance the pedestrian experience.

Unlike the typical “Chinese CBD” which appears to be popping up everywhere, this zone will be an area of high-density, low-rise buildings. This configuration will allow for the lettable area needed in a CBD, while prioritizing the needs and comfort of the pedestrian and the zone’s visitors. The pedestrian paths are elaborate and connected. The proposal also includes a 100,000 square meter commercial and retail center.

The Chain----The landscape acts as a unifier, binding together the distinct street zones - the “chain” connecting the “pearls”. Focussed along Zhongshan Road as a central axis, the landscape forms a central artery and continuity for traffic and pedestrian flows. The landscape strategy seeks to enhance Zhongshan Road as an unexploited city attractor and to renovate it as a holistic topography of quality spaces cenred aroundParks people and nature.Corridors ` Pedestrian Zones Waterside Plaza Colourful Forest Softscape Waterside Plaza

Since Zhongshan Road does not have the role of the major east-west connection in the urban grid, and the traffic results distributed on the sourrounding networkz the road willgeather only local traffic, allowing for the reduction of the road size and the number of lanes (1+1 or 2+2 Local Road depending on the sections), where the road is kept open to traffic.
