THE JOURNEY 2015 An art and mechanized experiential exhibit production to showcase the journey and contribution of United Engineers Malaysia (UEM) group for the past 10 years.
introduction This project is an experiential exhibit production targeted to be displayed during an event known as the Government Linked Company (GLC) Open Day. The exhibition is divided into 6 clusters or themes. This project relates to Cluster 1 which showcases the past successes of GLCs and with the theme, celebrating the journey of the GLCs. The theme mentioned was done through curation of experiential/interpretive exhibits and activities,
deploying communication/information technology and creative use of media and art, amoungst others, to compel interest, entertain and provide an engaged experience for the general public. In this particular project, the feature exhibit involved the United Engineers Malaysia (UEM) with the theme, 'Realising Malaysia’s Infrastructure Vision'.
Objectives To design and produce an experiential exhibit and it should convey the story of how the GLCs have touched the lives of Malaysians in a meaningful way through: • Visitors relating their own experiences to the content of the exhibit and making intellectual and emotional connections • Visitor senses are engaged through participation in activities and physical interaction with the exhibit None of these experiences should take place in isolation. Visitors should experience the exhibit in a variety of ways.
requirements The exibit should be planned within a 3m x 3m space. The components must contain at least these mandatory elements, with the feature component of UEM Group in a more elaborate manner than the rest: History - growth timeline of the company, Success - highlight key successes of the company, and People - how the company touched lives of Malaysians The exhibit focus and ideas also take account into UEM’s business components, history, footprint and how UEM expanded outside of Malaysia.
Research The design process of this project started off by gathering data regarding UEM Group for example their core businesses and achievements for the past 10 years. Working in a team of 5 people, data gathered was categorized accordingly and then narrowed down
into few parts which need to be displayed. Eventually, all these parts were combined to form a story related to UEM Group's achievements and their succes story.
concept exploration The conceptual stage of this project includes generating various concepts to highlight the success story o UEM Group. The first concept is a tunnel-like design whereby motion display is projected on faceted surface which surround the tunnel. This concept focuses on motion lighting and sound to engage visitors on the journey and achievements of
UEM Group. The second concept is a walkthrough which showcases the significant projects of UEM Group based on the story outlined during research phase. This concept adapts such as the 'Rube Goldbeg machine' and 'ball-rolling machine' whereby few balls go through the physical models to depicts a journey
of transformation. The third concept is an interactive where it educate visitors on how the projects of UEM Group were constructed.
concept development The second concept was chosen for further development. The development focuses on simplification of the projects by UEM Group and how it educate visitors about their projects. It also involve a few mechanized parts as the ball moves along the tracks. The movement of the ball would be solely depends on gravity. These balls and tracks depicts the journey and success story of UEM Group.
mock-ups The mock-ups were constructed to get the general idea on the appearance and the flow the ball (direction and speed). Several materials were used to do the mock-ups sch as cardboards, steelwire, pvc boards and pipes. The mock-ups were also constructed to test on the applied mechanism and moving parts.
fabrication And testing The fabrication stage started off by creating the contours and cut the MDF board out using laser cutting machine. Clear acrylics were mainly used for the buildings, parts and mechanism. The tracks for the moving balls were constructed using stainless steel wire.

LUMINANCE 2013 A wall lighting is designed to create a cosy environment. The structure is formed according to the glowing of the intensity of light. The light is reflected on the beverage carton and it creates various coloured rays.
Objective Upcycle used beverage cartons into functional and viable products.
Inspiration Inspired by the nature of dandelion seeds blown in the wind and how it visually creates movement.
Form Exploration Initial idea was to generate forms which then can be arranged in a manner that it builds a whole composition.
Geometric and polygonal forms were used in the design as it were folded and formed such as origami.
There were also ideas on how users can experience a different kind of wall lighting by exploring various ways of switching on and off the lights such as through tactile and movement.
Finalised Form Triangular form of various sizes were cut out from the used beverage carton. It was then folded and experimented with LED lighting to see how lights and shadow was formed in different directions. The cut-out in the middle of the triangular form is for the purpose of giving out more light from the inside. Not all of the traingular form have the cut-out as to randomise the arrangement and to control the brightness of the lighting.
Configurations Various configurations were generated to depicts the motion of a blown dandelion by using different sizes of the triangular forms.
Fabrication The fabrication begins by cutting the outer shape of the selected configuration. LED lights were arranged at different spots in such a way that it emites balance light.
The folded triangular forms were fixed to the cutout board and the back of the wall lighing was covered with the left-over materials.
GAIT TRAINER 2012 An assistive and approachable device to train muscle movement of spastic children
Problem identification Research was conducted in Spastic Children’s Association of Selangor and Federal Territory (SCASFT). As an average, the spastic children train on gait trainers approximately 1 to 2 hours in a day.
