I. THE MONA S TERY

U T S O A 2 019 FA L L I N S T R U C TO R : S M I L J A M I LO VA N O V I C - B E R T R A M G R O U P W O R K : L E A H W Y T T, J A C O B DA S U TA

During my study abroad in Italy program, I collaborated with two architecture students to design a monastery located in a hill town, Cortona, Italy. This project is a response to the multitude of contextual design factors -- emphasizing the physical complexities of the site while incorporating implications of the monastery as program and its place in Italy’s past and future. By naturally following the site to suggest programmatic hierarchies, the church is separated as an icon of communal spirituality and place this totem on the peak of the site to overlook the town of Cortona below. The monastery complex could then establish a dialogue with the church through the connection with the site’s existing wall. Thus, the wall’s condition becomes not only a protection but also a pilgrimage thread between the private realm of the monastery and the public realm of the church. Within the monastery itself, the cloister serves as a ritual between man and architecture, along with its function as a circulation ring, drives the project to embody the absolute nature of the cloister’s implicit geometry. Correspondingly, the project frames the site within its courtyard, enforcing the duality between the natural complexities of the site and the absolution strict and ritualistic of the monastic life.

The monastory plan is a series of shells with different materialistic treatment: the outer wall serves as the private border, and the inner walls of the cloister function as structure and veil. In its separation and systematic linkage, the monastery attempts to reify the ascetic principles of its inhabitants formal and scheduled life, while juggling between the communal life of the brotherhood and one’s personal spiritual experience.

II. A BOOK S TORE

U T S O A 2 018 FA L L I N S T R U C TO R : N E R E A F E L I Z

This concept book store locates in North Austin, Crescent Plaza, where people can explore their relationships with physical books as well as the community. The project started with studying Alvar Aalto shelf 111 and developing iterations of bookshelves accordingly. The precedent furniture studies and incorporation of current “Instagrammable space culture help the project to create an immersive environment where people can forget urban life and have a break from stressful work and study. The bizarre geometries interior distinguishes from the existing mundane storefront to increase curiosity and invite people to go inside. With a traditional material selection-wood, the space is prone to a warm and welcoming vibe, creating a more comfortable surrunding for users to spend their leisure time.

III. ONE S TOP CENTER U T S OA 2 019 S P R I N G I N S T R U C TO R : A L L I S O N G A S K I N GROUP WORK: GR ACE ESSLINGER

The University of Texas at Austin is developing a one stop center for campus enrollment services, where students will quickly and easily access the information and services they need — including registration, financial aid, student records, and more — to support their enrollment and timely graduation. The project started with researching existed site condition and targeted user groups. The eclectic approach represents a fusion of modern representation of school culture and current site style Spanish-Mediterranean Revival with Classical elements. A user journey map is created to study footprints of two groups of users: one stop center employees and students need for help. The fully customized entryway is a result of considering circulation path which simplifies the current service process for students. Semiopen office layout offers enough privacy for each employee while provides sufficient natural lighting throughout the narrow site.

GENSLER 2 02 0 SUMMER INTERN PROJECT SUPERVISOR: A ARON BISCH G R O U P W O R K W I T H OT H E R I N T E R N S

The HAY Center, a program of Harris County Protective Services, is a one-stop center where current and former foster youth, ages 14-25, can acquire a variety of transition resources, services and support. The project started with site selection and master planning. After carefully studied different groups of stakeholers of this project, we started the massing design and made iterations after conducting more user research. The design team is a mixed group of architecture and interior design interns. The project was devided into two major parts: residential area and commcercial area. My responsiblity of the project includes designing mudolar residential units, which enabled the architecture to be more flexible depends on the budget, and a communal area, which aim to create a comfortable environment for the youth to enjoy time with friends.

The Sleek quirky table lamp is inspired by two found object, one being a sleek toner and the other being a quirky googly tchotchke. From dissecting the two objects and trying to merge them, we discovered the best way to force them together was to literally join them, and recreat both objects in a tectonic way.

35

The speculative site of the table lamp is an underground bar in madrid, filled with young hipsters. The hipsters might be getting drinks after a long day at work or they may be catching up with friends, gathering around the table lamp.

SLEEK (adj.) - having an elegant, streamlined shape or design, smooth, glossy QUIRKY (adj.) - characterized by peculiar or unexpected traits

The goal of this project is to create a sublime effect in a 12”×12“×16“ diorama box while incoporating the outdoor-indoor research topic (previous assignment of the semester). The scale of the model is 1/8” = 1’-0”

Imagine users are in this space and the lit up path leads them to enter. Taxidermy is displayed in fractional dioramas along the road, and the users can see white crystals cover the edge. Black and mirrored surrounding gives them a feeling of infinity and mystery.

41

Kaledoscopic scales is a decorative wall assembly made out of crayon and zip ties. It comes with different scent by adding different essential oil depending on the program.

This nested 3 cube was to designed to test the limitation of 3D printer technologies. It contains three layers, each nested with the next.

43

Each enclosing layer is double the volume of the inner layer and uses approximately the same amout of material. The three layers compose a single object and cannot be separated.
