he roads of southern Yucatán take you to Tekax, a city with many stories to tell, moments in history that go back to the time of the Guerra de Castas (Caste War), and local legends that just might turn this into your new favorite place to visit.
Ubicada en la zona más alta de la Península, es también conocida como “La Sultana de la Sierra”. Se encuentra a poco más de hora y media de Mérida y tiene todo un circuito que reúne historia, paisajes, cultura maya comunitaria, gastronomía, grutas y mucha aventura (ver las páginas 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 y 10 de esta edición).
Tekax is located on the highest point of the peninsula, and is also referred to as the “Sultan of the Mountain.” It takes just over an hour and a half to drive from Mérida, and it has a series of attractions for different interests: history, landscapes, Maya communities, gastronomy, caves, and plenty of adventure! (see pages 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 of this edition).

Starting Point Start your visit at the Palacio Municipal, a building that once served as a trade center on the ground floor, and a residence on the second floor. From the second floor, you’ll have a great view of Tekax’s Centro Histórico, main park, church, and market.
Un guiño al pasado Transpórtate al pasado visitando el parque principal. Enrejado en su totalidad con decorado estilo francés (segundo en su tipo en la entidad, además de Valladollid), cuenta con ocho accesos, bancas y faroles de hierro traídos desde Europa.
A Look at Our Past Travel back in time by visiting the park. It’s completely enclosed with French-style decorative gates (it’s one of only two such enclosed parks in the state, the other is in Valladolid), and has eight access points, benches, and wroughtiron lamps imported from Europe.

Across the street, the Franciscan church (and former convent) was built with stones from Maya temples and is dedicated to San Juan Bautista. On its façade you can still see the coats of arms of the first families that came to Tekax.

La cima yucateca desde la Ermita Avanza un poco más y prepárate para subir unos 80 metros de escalones de piedra para conocer la capilla dedicada a San Diego de Alcalá de Henares. Desde esta cima la vista de la ciudad es magnífica, ideal para mirar un atardecer y admirar el paisaje yucateco como nunca lo has visto, ¡desde las alturas! “San Dieguito”, como le dicen de cariño los pobladores a este santo, es responsable de milagros tales como salvar a un niño de ser quemado por un horno casero.
A View from the Top at La Ermita Get ready to walk up 80 meters of stone steps to see the chapel dedicated to San Diego de Alcalá de Henares. From the top you’ll have an incredible view of the city, perfect to watch the sunset and admire the Yucatecan landscape like you’ve never seen it before - from the top! “San Dieguito,” the nickname given to this saint by locals, is said to be responsible for many miracles, such as saving a boy from a lit oven.

Tekax: Aquí inicia la aventura Tekax: The Adventure Starts Here P
repárate para conocer grutas y formaciones de cristal, hacer senderismo, acampar, practicar rappel o lanzarte desde una tirolesa y mucho más, ya sea en el parque Kaalmankal, en Las Sartenejas o en las grutas Chocantes. Tekax tiene más de 200 grutas y se puede visitar varias de ellas. En cada una los guías te proporcionan el equipo de protección necesario: rodilleras, casco con luz, guantes, además del acompañamiento personalizado. Las Sartenejas, un mundo subterráneo: Reúne cuatro grutas en su interior: Murciélagos, Trincheras, El platanal e Ix’mait. Adentro puedes encontrar formaciones de piedras y minerales, espejos de agua… un mundo subterráneo. Chocantes, sorprendentes formaciones de cristales: Conocida como gruta de los cristales por sus imponentes formaciones de cascadas de carbonato de calcio.
Parque Turístico Kaalmankal: This is a place to experience nature, adventure, and Maya culture. This place is ideal for families travelling with kids and seniors. Chacmultún, a site that’s full of surprises: Located just 10 km from Tekax, it has a ballcourt and three groups of buildings you can visit: Chacmultún with its main palace and murals; Cabalpak with an open terrace; and X’ethpool, the tallest of all. The site is located on top of “hutz,” or hills that are approximately 8 m high. The views are memorable. There are several places to eat and stay if you decide to spend the weekend. You’ll also find hotels, apartments, and independent Maya cabins in Oxkutzcab (30 minutes away), and Akí (15 minutes). Tradición oral viva: las leyendas de San Diego Legends of San Diego, Patron Saint of Tekax S
an Diego de Alcalá is the saint of La Ermita, the church at the top of the hill in Tekax. It was built in 1645 by the Spanish who wished to convert the local Maya population to Catholicism.
Según cuenta la leyenda, los españoles no corrían con mucha suerte en sus procesos de conversión hasta que, convenientemente, ocurrió un milagro. Se dice que a la estatua de San Diego de Alcalá, que normalmente residía en la catedral, se le vio posado sobre un pozo en la colina, pero desapareció rápidamente y volvió a aparecer en la catedral. Después, volvió a aparecer en el pozo y se interpretó como una señal de que San Diego quería que se le construya un santuario en ese lugar.
The story goes that the Spanish weren’t having much luck with their conversion plans until, handily, a miracle occurred. It is said that the statue of San Diego de Alcalá which normally resided in the cathedral in town, was seen in the well on the hill but quickly disappeared, reappearing again in the cathedral. It then, again, appeared in the well and this was interpreted as San Diego’s desire to have a sanctuary built on the top of the hill.
Aunque este “milagro” ahora es parte de la historia aceptada del pueblo, hay otra historia menos conocida, que sobrevive entre sus habitantes. Durante los preparativos para la “Bajada de la imagen de San Diego”, un niño que buscaba un lugar oculto para tomar su siesta se acostó en el horno apagado de un panadero. Mientras dormía, llegó el panadero y empezó a prepararse para hornear los panes de las fiestas. De repente, el niño despertó en un horno caliente y se dio cuenta de que estaba atrapado. Gritó para que lo ayudarán, pero el panadero no logró ayudarlo. En este momento pasó la procesión de San Diego y, aparentemente, el santo se salió de su propia procesión sólo para rescatar al niño del horno. El festival de San Diego es del 3 al 18 de noviembre y se celebra con bailes, fuegos artificiales, procesiones y más. Este es el único momento del año en el que la estatua se lleva desde su hogar en La Ermita y se pasea por el pueblo hasta llegar a la iglesia principal.

While this “miracle” has made it into accepted lore, there is another, less well known story that survives only in local legend. As the town was preparing for the the Descent of the Image of San Diego, a small boy, looking for somewhere to take a sneaky nap, crept inside an unlit baker’s oven. While he was sleeping, the baker arrived and began preparing to bake bread for the festivities. Before long, the little boy awoke in the now hot oven and realised he was trapped. He cried out to be saved but the baker could do nothing. At this moment the procession of San Diego marched past and apparently the saint stepped out of his own procession for just long enough to rescue the boy from the oven. The boy survived and the procession continued on its way to the cathedral on the town’s plaza. To honor this miracle, the local bakers offer bread products to the saint, which is why you see him in La Ermita with roscas (bagel-like bread) around his arms. The festival of San Diego is from November 3 - 18, and is celebrated with fireworks, processions, and more. This is the only time of year that the statue is taken from its home in La Ermita and walked through the town to the main church. POR / BY CASSIE PEARSE
Recolectando agua de lluvia Collecting Rainwater E
n el sur de Yucatán, donde los pequeños cerros en verde colorean el paisaje de forma muy distinta a los espejos azules de mar en la costa, se mantiene un legado arraigado en el pasado maya y vivo en el presente: la armonía de la naturaleza coexistiendo con la vida humana y preservando uno de los elementos más sagrados, el agua. Para los mayas, la madre tierra es generosa y provee de lo necesario para la existencia, siempre y cuando se solicite permiso y se honre al monte, a las cuevas, a los árboles… a la vida. Tekax no posee cenotes, ríos o fuentes de agua cercanas. Sin embargo, el profundo conocimiento y respeto a la naturaleza permitió a los mayas aprovechar al máximo el agua que caía de la lluvia disponiendo para su almacenamiento en piedras y contenedores naturales. Hoyos en la tierra: El jaltún (tun: piedra) o sarteneja es un hoyo que se forma naturalmente en las piedras o rocas. Se ha utilizado para recolectar el agua de lluvia desde tiempos ancestrales. El líquido servía para usarse en los cultivos, para consumo de los animales, y ocasionalmente humano, así como para almacenamiento en caso de sequías. Mientras caminas por el monte o exploras esta región, puedes encontrarte piedras con huecos o pequeños depósitos de agua, ya que son bastante comunes. Cisternas mayas: Almacenar agua para tiempos de sequía era todo un reto que los mayas de esta zona supieron superar, creando los chultunes (chulub tun), depósitos que servían para recolectar y almacenar agua de lluvia en grandes cantidades, como una cisterna maya. Podían tener diferentes formas y tamaños pero funcionaban aislando y manteniendo el agua en forma subterránea, aprovechando la altura de la región. Esta técnica aun se puede ver en la zona arqueológica de Chacmultún y sirve de ejemplo de la sabiduría e ingeniería maya para abastecerse de agua. Metates: Sabemos que las cavernas eran consideradas la puerta al inframundo, un espacio sagrado. Ahí se recolectaba agua mediante los metates, piedras rectangulares con forma cóncava al centro que también servían para moler maíz, como se han encontrado en algunas cuevas. Esta agua era sagrada por su pureza y servía principalmente en rituales o ceremonias. Los mayas siguen mostrando al mundo muchas técnicas que hoy sirven de ejemplo para el manejo y conservación de este apreciado líquido: el agua. n the south of Yucatán, where small, green hills decorate the landscape in a very different way to the reflective, blue views of the coastline, there is a Maya legacy which is still alive and well today: the harmony of nature coexisting with human life, and the preservation of one of our most sacred elements, water.

For the Maya, Mother Earth is generous and provides us with all we need to survive, as long as we ask for her permission and honor the “monte,” - the land and all the elements that are found within it caves, trees…and life itself. Tekax doesn’t have cenotes, rivers, or nearby water sources. However, a deep knowledge and respect for nature allowed the Maya to make the most of rainwater by creating natural containers out of stones and other materials. Pits: The “jaltun” (tun: stone) is a pit that forms naturally in stones or rocks and has been used to collect rainwater since ancestral times. The liquid collected in “jaltunes” was used for crops, and would be given to animals, and occasionally people, to drink; it was also stored and used during droughts. When you walk in the wilderness or explore this region, you will likely find rocks with holes making up small deposits of water, as they are very common. Maya cisterns: Storing water for droughts was an enormous challenge that the Maya of this area were able to overcome by creating “chultunes,” which were water vessels used to collect and store large quantities of rainwater, similar to a cistern. These could be of different shapes and sizes but worked by isolating and maintaining the water underground, taking advantage of the altitude in this region. This technique can still be seen in the Chacmultún archaeological site and serves as a reminder of the wisdom of ancient Maya engineering. Metates: We know that caves were considered passages to the underworld, and were, therefore, a sacred space. Water here was collected in “metates,” concave rectangular stones which were also used to grind corn. Some examples of these have been found in the caves near Tekax. This water was sacred and was used mainly in ceremonies and rituals. The Maya continue to show the world many techniques that are clear examples for the responsible management and conservation of this vital liquid: water. i estás buscando una excursión para tu familia, entonces te recomiendo ir a Tekax, ubicado a hora y media de Mérida sobre la carretera 184. f you’re looking for a fun excursion for your family, then I highly recommend the small town of Tekax, located an hour and a half to the south of Mérida, along Highway 184.
La Ermita: Justo en el Centro encontrarás La Ermita, una colina de 80 metros con una pequeña iglesia en la cima. Sube los escalones para disfrutar la vista y deja que los niños exploren.
The main church is the second biggest in Yucatán, and right next to it there’s a kids’ playground, the plaza, and a bandstand. By late afternoon, the bandstand will have turned into an ice-cream stall.
Chacmultún: Cuando visitamos este sitio arqueológico ubicado a tan sólo 15 minutos de Tekax, lo tuvimos todo para nosotros. A los niños les encantó, como siempre, poder explorar y correr. Cuando llegamos y mi hijo fue por su cuenta a descubrir el sitio, nos gritó: “Oigan, encontré el Juego de Pelota, ¡está genial!” Es muy emocionante escuchar esto de un niño de siete años.
La Ermita: Right in the center of town you’ll find La Ermita, an 80 meter hill with a small church on top. Climb up the steps to enjoy nice views, and let the kids explore.
Grutas y eco parques: Tekax tiene más de 200 grutas y cavernas. Para explorarlas, necesitarás ir a uno de los eco parques porque de esta forma tendrás acceso a un guía, equipo, así como otras actividades. Necesitas reservar tu visita por adelantado, y si deseas comer ahí, avísales también. Estos sitios son relativamente nuevos así que aún están afinando algunos detalles. · Eco parque Kaalmankal: Kaalmankal está ubicado a las afueras de Tekax y tiene una de las múltiples grutas; no es muy profunda ni da miedo, pero los niños se sentirán muy grandes al ponerse sus guantes, protectores y cascos (nos pidieron utilizar equipo para adultos con los niños ya que no tenían equipo de su talla). Después de explorar la gruta, es hora de hacer un poco de tirolesa y jugar en el columpio de Tarzán. Estos son seguros para la mayoría de los niños.
Chacmultún: We had the entire place to ourselves when we visited this archaeological site some 15 minutes from Tekax. The kids loved, as ever, being able to explore and run to their hearts’ content. As we arrived and my son ran off to explore, he yelled over, “hey, I’ve found the pelota court, it’s so cool!” From a 7-year-old this is pretty exciting. Caves and eco-parks: Tekax has over 200 caves. In order to explore them, you’ll need to visit one of the town’s eco-parks because this way you get a guide, equipment, and access to other activities too. You need to book your visit in advance, and should you wish them to feed you, let them know. These parks are relatively new and they are still ironing out some of their housekeeping. · Kaalmankal Eco-park: Kaalmankal is a short drive outside of Tekax and has one of its many caves; it isn’t deep or scary, but the kids will feel very grown up as they put on their caving gloves, knee-protectors, and helmets (we were asked to use the adult-sized equipment on our kids as they hadn’t any child-sized equipment).

After exploring the cave, it’s time to head outside for some zip-lining and Tarzan swinging. These are safe for most kids. There is also a hiking trail at the back of the eco-park and a quad-bike available for use.

· Las Sartenejas II: Hay cuatro grutas en la propiedad de este eco parque. Al ir con niños pequeños nos recomendaron un tour de hora y media que nos llevó a dos grutas.
· Las Sartenejas II: There are four caves on the property. With our small kids in tow they immediately recommended an hour and a half tour that took us to two caves. We visited Grutas Trincheras and Murciélagos. We had an absolute blast and at one point our guide took all the children through a tiny tunnel no adult fancied trying! The kids felt so grown-up and special that they’d been allowed to do this. It was a lovely touch.

Pues, hay una serie de conciertos que te permitirá hacer todo esto y a un precio muy accesible. Música barroca, clásica, contemporánea y jazz… un paraguas incluyente de música de varios géneros es lo que te espera en “Conciertos de Bolsillo”, que tendrá su primera temporada de septiembre a diciembre y contará con la participación de músicos de talla internacional. Para la temporada inaugural de esta serie de conciertos se ha elegido como sede el Palacio de la Música. Antes de cada concierto, se llevará a cabo una charla informal a las 8 pm sobre el género, la historia y las piezas que se interpretarán. “El objetivo de ‘Conciertos de Bolsillo’, es crear un ambiente muy amigable para tanto los asistentes como los músicos”, comenta Samuel Rafinesque, organizador del evento.

n 2013, abrió un restaurante que cambió la escena de la cocina contemporánea mexicana en Mérida: Apoala. Con su fresca propuesta de comida oaxaqueña que incorporaba ingredientes tanto de Oaxaca como Yucatán, se volvió rápidamente en un lugar favorito para los visitantes y residentes de Mérida. Seis años más tarde, la Chef Sara Arnaud, ha abierto tres establecimientos más junto con su hermano Carlos. Cada uno de estos trae algo nuevo a la mesa de opciones en nuestra ciudad. Apoala abrió tras terminar las renovaciones del Parque de Santa Lucía. El nombre significa “Río de Linajes” y es un árbol en la mitología mixteca de la que se dice nacieron los primeros mixtecos. Para el menú, Sara incluyó recetas del repertorio de su familia que se han compartido durante generaciones y también recetas contemporáneas. “La pasión por los sabores mexicanos está en nuestro ADN”, dice. Todos comentaban frecuentemente sobre la calidad de la mixología en Apoala, así que Sara y Carlos decidieron abrir Malahat, un speakeasy pequeño y muy en tendencia inspirado en la época de la ley seca de los años 20s. Los tragos, afortunadamente, son superiores al aguardiente que se bebía con frecuencia durante la época de la ley seca; aquí se sirven tanto clásicos cocteles de primera, como modernos brebajes. Voltacafé nació del amor que tienen tanto la Chef Sara como sus hermanos por el café y es el tercer establecimiento que abrieron en conjunto. Para este espacio, se inspiraron en el Porfiriato, considerado como la edad de oro del café en México. El menú presenta postres y panes que enamoran, así como bebidas, desayunos y almuerzos con un toque actual. Al principio de este año, el más reciente restaurante del grupo abrió en La Isla.. Tatemar nace del amor personal que tiene
la Chef Sara por los pescados y mariscos y que disfruta aún más después de años de formación profesional. Debido a que los mariscos son tan abundantes y frescos en Yucatán, ha construido sus platillos en productos locales y de temporada. “Estoy muy orgullosa de representar los sabores de mi país, sus productos, su calidad, pero sobre todo, su gente”, me dice. La Chef Sara se entrega a cada uno de sus platillos, y visitar uno de sus restaurantes es como conocerla en persona. Te da la bienvenida a su hogar con cada plato. People often commented on the quality of Apoala’s mixology, and so Sara and Carlos decided to open Malahat, a trendy and cozy speakeasy right next door, inspired by the 1920’s prohibition. The drinks are fortunately superior to the moonshine often drunk during the prohibition with both topnotch old-fashioned cocktails and modern concoctions served. Voltacafé was born of chef Sara and her siblings’ love of coffee and is the third establishment they opened together. For this space, they were inspired by the Porfiriato which is considered the golden age of coffee in México. The menu features mouthwatering desserts, pastries, breakfasts, and lunch specials with a fresh twist.

n 2013, a restaurant opened which changed the scene of contemporary Mexican cuisine in Mérida: Apoala. With its fresh take on Oaxacan cuisine, incorporating ingredients from both Oaxaca and Yucatán, it quickly turned into a favorite among visitors and residents of Mérida alike. Fast-forward six years, and Chef Sara Arnaud, has opened three more establishments along with her brother Carlos. Each of these brings something new to our city’s table. Apoala opened once the renovations of Santa Lucía Park were completed. The name means “River of Lineages” and is a tree in Mixteco mythology from which the first Mixtecos are said to have been born. La ciudad se fundó en 1542 por Francisco de Montejo “El Mozo” sobre los restos de la ciudad maya T’ho, se le bautizó como Mérida por su ciudad natal en España. Estas raíces mayas y coloniales están aún muy visibles en muchos de los edificios del Centro Histórico al día de hoy. With close to 1,000,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area, it is also the most populated city in the Yucatán peninsula and one of the fastest growing cities in México. You might be surprised by this, because once you’ve visited our city, you’ll see that it maintains the traditions, customs, and old-city charm that few cities can boast. Montejo. Here, we find the traditional city “barrios” and markets, grandiose homes, several museums, and historical monuments, which make them ideal for exploring in the morning and afternoon. But don’t be fooled, these areas are equally lively in the evenings because in recent years they have seen the birth of many modern restaurants, entertainment venues, and bars which keep the “Centro” and “Montejo” buzzing throughout the day. Our tropical climate, architecture, warm people, and the proximity to the beach and impressive geological formations such as cenotes and caves have enamored more than one visitor who “tomaron agua de pozo” - or “drank from the well,” a local saying of visitors who wind up staying forever. Paseo de Montejo que es sin duda no sólo la más bella avenida de nuestro estado, sino también la más importante. Gracias a los frondosos árboles, así como diversos hoteles, cafés y restaurantes que delinean la avenida, es conocida como “los Campos Elíseos” de Mérida. El majestuoso boulevard fue inaugurado en 1888 para conmemorar la fundación de la ciudad de Mérida por Francisco de Montejo y León y se construye justo en el marco del “oro verde”, una época de gran prosperidad económica debido a la producción del henequén en el estado. Esta riqueza sin precedentes vio nacer las majestuosas casonas y mansiones que aún son puntos de referencia del Paseo de Montejo tales como: la Casa Museo Montes Molina, las Casas Gemelas, El Minaret y el Palacio Cantón, hogar del Museo de Antropología e Historia. Con el tiempo, muchas de las mansiones de esta avenida fueron abandonadas y se establecieron bancos, compañías de seguros y otro negocios en su lugar. La mejor forma de recorrer esta avenida es caminando bajo la sombra de sus árboles. Empieza por El Remate de Paseo de Montejo (por la Calle 47) y camina de un lado de la calle. Pasarás restaurantes tradicionales y modernos, glorietas con historias especiales, simpáticos cafés, irresistibles tiendas, y bares acogedores. Llega al Monumento a la Patria y regresa por el otro lado de la calle para ver lo que se ha instalado ahí con el tiempo. Caminar por esta avenida es un nostálgico viaje al pasado de Yucatán; pero no hay que olvidar que también es parte de su vibrante presente. Diferentes actividades cultura-
les se presentan aquí cada semana, como la Noche Mexicana los sábados a partir de las 8 pm en el El Remate y la Bici Ruta y Corredor de Arte todos los domingos a partir de las 9 am. El Mercado de Santa Ana, justo a lado de El Remate es también algo que no puede faltar en tu lista para una experiencia gastronómica muy yucateca.

ne of the most iconic places in the city of Mérida is spectacular Paseo de Montejo, which is without a doubt not only the most beautiful avenue in our state, but also the most important. Thanks to the lush tropical vegetation and trees, along with many hotels, cafés, and restaurants that line the streets, it’s known as the “Champs Elysées” of Mérida. This majestic boulevard was inaugurated in 1888 to commemorate the founding of the city by Francisco de Montejo y León and was built in the midst of the “green gold,” an era of great economic prosperity due to the production of henequén in the state. The best way to explore this promenade is by walking under the shade of its trees. Start at El Remate de Paseo de Montejo (the beginning, at Calle 47) and take a stroll up one side of the street. You will pass both traditional and modern restaurants, roundabouts with fascinating stories behind them, cute cafés, irresistible stores, and cozy bars. Once you reach the Monumento a la Patria, snap a picture, and return on the other side of the street so that you can check out what has popped up there with time. Walking down Paseo de Montejo is a nostalgic trip to Yucatán’s past, but one mustn’t forget that it’s also a part of its vibrant present. Different cultural activities take place here each week, such as the Noche Mexicana which happens every Saturday at El Remate at 8 pm, as well as the Bici Ruta and Art Corridor which you can find every Sunday morning starting at 9 am. The Santa Ana Market, right next to El Remate, is also something that has to go on your list for a very authentic foodie experience.

oday, Santa Lucía has become one of the Centro Histórico’s favorite areas, but it also has a past that’s full of history because it’s one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Amongst Santa Lucía’s main attractions are the church and the park (both located on Calle 60 x 55). This area’s beginnings go way back to 1565, just a few years after the founding of the city of Mérida. What we now know as Santa Lucía started out just as a shrine for slaves to hold their religious services, and it continued in this way for many years. The pleasant plaza we know today wasn’t built until 1804 and has been modified throughout the years. The zone’s culinary offering includes restaurants that are located both in the archways of the park and on nearby

streets. You can enjoy everything from modest Esquites and Marquesitas served by food carts, to sophisticated dishes inspired by Mexican and international flavors. Walk down the streets of Santa Lucía and gaze at colonial architecture, boutique hotels, and irresistible stores that are bound to give you plenty of reasons to pick up the perfect souvenir, for yourself or for someone you love. If you’re feeling particularly hot, you’ll find refreshing ice creams and frappés that will help you cool off while you sit on one of the park benches, snap a picture in the giant “Confidente” chairs, or just wander around enjoying the green gardens and tropical ambiance. If you’re around on a Thursday evening, stay for the “Serenata” and enjoy the music and traditional dancing that has been held each week since 1965. If you’re at the park on a Sunday morning, you’ll also have plenty to see and do: check out some sweet dance moves and join them if you like, you can also visit the market that sets up or the classic Bici Ruta that runs up Calle 60. Dress nice and cool, and enjoy one of Mérida’s most beloved neighborhoods.

Nuestro Estado y la Capital
l estado de Yucatán se encuentra poblado por aproximadamente dos millones de personas. Al suroeste se encuentra el estado de Campeche, al sureste el estado de Quintana Roo, y al norte el Golfo de México. Sus principales industrias están relacionadas a la pesca, la producción de puerco y aves, la manufactura, el turismo y otros servicios. Yucatán vio crecer la civilización maya quienes son particularmente conocidos por sus estudios avanzados de astronomía, matemáticas y medicina; sin mencionar la fundación de grandes ciudades. Francisco de Montejo y León “El Mozo” fundó la ciudad de Mérida en 1542. Una vez que los españoles se instalaron, ejercieron una enorme influencia religiosa y cultural que duraría tres siglos. En 1847, estalló la Guerra de Castas entre la población maya y los descendientes españoles que mantenían el poder político y económico. Entre las causas de la insurrección figuraban las terribles condiciones laborales que se volvían más comunes, en parte debido a la creciente industria del henequén en Yucatán. he state of Yucatán is populated by approximately two million people and is bordered by the state of Campeche to the southwest, the state of Quintana Roo to the southeast, and the Gulf of México to the north. Its main industries are related to fishing, pork and poultry production, manufacturing, tourism, and other services. Yucatán saw the rise of Maya civilization, whom are particularly well-known for their advanced studies in astronomy, math, and medicine; not to mention the founding of large cities. Francisco de Montejo y León “El Mozo” founded the city of Mérida in 1542. Once the Spanish were settled, they wielded heavy religious and cultural influence throughout the region for three centuries. In 1847, the “Guerra de Castas” broke out between the Maya population and the Spanish-descent which held political and economic power. Among the causes for the insur-
rection were the terrible working conditions which were expanding in part due to Yucatán’s growing henequén industry. Towards the end of the conflict, Yucatán established itself as a major producer of henequén which led to a time of economic prosperity in the state. Today’s Yucatecan culture is definitely “Mestizo,” a mix of Spanish and Maya, and to a lesser degree other influences such as French, Cuban, Dutch, Korean, and Lebanese, which can particularly be seen in our regional cuisine and architecture. The Maya language is still widely spoken by approximately 520,000 native speakers throughout the state, but even the Spanish spoken in Yucatán employs words of Maya origin such as “tuch” (bellybutton) and “xix” (the last bit of something). Language holds enormous significance to the cultural identity of the region. With time, the influence of different cultures and the natural beauty of the peninsula have created a destination which has it all. FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND The city of Mérida is divided into sectors called “Colonias” (Col. Itzimná, Col. México, etc.). Colonia Centro is divided into neighborhoods called “Barrios” (Barrio de Santa Ana, Barrio de Santiago, etc.). Addresses are written: Calle 39 #483 x 54 y 56, Col. Centro, meaning: building #483 on 39 street between 54 and 56 streets, in the Centro sector of the city. Each Colonia has its own numbering. ESTACIONAMIENTO Estacionarse en las calles del Centro de Mérida está limitado. Los estacionamientos públicos (con un gran anuncio de “E”) cobran por hora. No te estaciones en la banqueta si está pintada de amarillo. PARKING Parking on the street is limited in downtown Mérida. Parking lots (“Estacionamiento Público” with a large “E” sign) charge by the hour. Do not park where the curb is painted yellow. TIPPING Travel industry staff count on their tips. In restaurants, 15% is a fair tip; hotel maids should receive at least $30 pesos per day of your stay. Strolling trios should receive about $100 pesos for three songs. Gas station attendants, parking attendants, and grocery packers should receive $5 to $10 pesos. Also tip the people who guide you around the archaeological sites and caves.
GAS STATIONS Check that the attendant sets the pump back to “zero” before pumping your gas. There are no self-serve gas stations in México, so tipping is customary. Credit cards are accepted in most stations; ask before you fill your tank.

as haciendas de México eran parte de un sistema económico iniciado por los españoles en el siglo XVI, similar al sistema feudal de Europa. Eran eficientes granjas y centros de manufacturación que producían carne y otros productos para exportación. En Yucatán, las haciendas reforzaban el sistema de castas, basado en la raza, con los mayas como esclavos. La mayoría de las haciendas yucatecas en el siglo XIX producía henequén, una variedad del cactus de agave, el cual era exportado por la creciente industria de transporte. La casa principal era usualmente el edificio más grande, donde el hacendado tenía sus habitaciones centrales y donde ocurría la mayor parte de la administración.
Las haciendas de Yucatán tuvieron su clímax a principios de 1900, cuando la economía local tuvo un gran éxito debido a la fibra de henequén usada para hacer soga, cuerda y cordel. Las casonas en el Paseo de Montejo y Avenida Colón en Mérida son las casas que el “oro verde”, el henequén, ayudó a proveer. Después de la Guerra de Castas en Yucatán y la subsiguiente invención de fibras sintéticas, la mayoría de las haciendas fueron abandonadas, hasta la década de 1990, cuando muchas fueron restauradas a su gloria original. They were efficient farming and manufacturing centers that produced meat and other products for export. The haciendas enforced a social system of castes, based on race, with the Maya as slaves. Most Yucatecan haciendas in the 19th century produced rope from henequén, a variety of the agave cactus, which was exported for the booming shipping industry. The main house, or “Casa Principal” was usually the largest building, where the “hacendado” kept his living quarters and where the administration took place. Henequén processing took place in the machine house, or “Casa de Máquinas.” There was usually a “capilla,” or chapel, a “casa del mayordomo,” where the jefe, or foreman, lived, and many other smaller buildings for storage and living quarters.
Each hacienda had a school, infirmary, store, church, cemetery, hydraulics area, jail, and stables. The haciendas of Yucatán saw their heyday in the early 1900s when the local economy was booming due to the sisal fiber that was used to make rope, cord, and twine. The mansions on Paseo de Montejo and Avenida Colón in Mérida are the rich homes the “green gold,” henequén, helped provide. After the Yucatán Caste War and the subsequent invention of synthetic fibers, most haciendas were abandoned to decay in the jungles until the 1990s when many of them were brought back to their former state of glory. Some haciendas in Yucatán have been renovated into beautiful five-star hotels, complete with elegant rooms, sumptuous dining facilities, swimming pools and magnificent grounds.Other haciendas are museums, providing a glimpse into former colonial times. Others are lived in by locals whose ancestors reclaimed them during the Mexican Revolution. And still others remain unrestored and open to the ravages of time.

a cocina yucateca es una exquisita muestra de sabores mexicanos y europeos. Pero no se debe confundir, pues la comida mexicana es diferente de la yucateca, la primera utiliza más chiles y especias, y la segunda tiene más infuencia maya y ha sido reconocida mundialmente como una de las mejores cocinas tradicionales. BRAZO DE REINA. Este platillo yucateco es ideal para la época de vigilia en Cuaresma y Semana Santa, pues no contiene carne. Se mezclan hojas de chaya, masa de maíz, manteca, sal y huevos duros, esta mezcla se envuelve en hojas de plátano y se cuece. Se sirve cortado en rebanadas y se adereza con una salsa a base de tomate, cebolla y pimienta, finalizando con el toque especial pepitas de calabaza tostadas molidas.

HUEVOS MOTULEÑOS. Huevos fritos estrellados sobre una tostada cubierta de frijoles refritos; se adereza con salsa de tomate, jamón picado y chícharos, servido con algunas rebanadas de plátano macho frito.
MUCBIPOLLO. Este platillo, similar a un tamal, tradicionalmente se cocina para la época del Hanal Pixan (Día de los Muertos); sin embargo, puede ser consumido todo el año, pues su delicioso sabor te dejará con ganas de más. Está compuesto por masa de maíz, pollo, puerco, manteca, tomate, cebolla, chile dulce, epazote, recado rojo, dientes de ajo, sal y caldo de pollo. Se envuelve en hoja de plátano en lugar de hoja de maíz, y se amarra con hilo de henequén. Igual que la cochinita pibil, es tradicionalmente horneado en un “pib”.
PANUCHOS Y SALBUTES. Tortillas de maíz fritas con pollo o pavo, lechuga, tomate y una rebanada de cebolla y aguacate. La única diferencia entre el panucho y el salbút es que el panucho lleva frijol dentro de la tortilla.
POC-CHUC. Finas rebanadas de puerco marinadas en jugo de naranja agria, asadas a las brasas, servidas con una salsa de tomate (chiltomate) y cebolla morada picada, acompañado de frijol.
PAPADZULES. Huevos duros picados dentro de una tortilla de maíz cubierta por una exquisita salsa de semilla de calabaza adornado con salsa de tomate.
POLLO PIBIL. Piezas de pollo marinadas en achiote, jugo de naranja agria, ajo, comino, sal y pimienta; envueltas en hoja de plátano y horneadas en un “pib”. Acompáñalo con tortillas hechas a mano.
FRIJOL CON PUERCO. La versión yucateca del puerco cocido en frijoles; servido con arroz blanco o arroz cocido con el caldo del frijol y salsa de tomate y aderezado con rábano, cilantro y cebolla. Este platillo se come los lunes en muchos lugares yucatecos.

However, it is quite different from Mexican food which uses more chiles and spices, while Yucatecan recipes have more of a Maya influence. BRAZO DE REINA. This Yucatecan dish is ideal for Lent and Semana Santa, for it contains no meat. A mixture of chaya leaves, corn meal, salt, onion, pepper and hard boiled eggs is baked in banana leaves. It is then sliced and topped with tomato sauce, and ground toasted pumpkin seeds.
FRIJOL CON PUERCO. This is the Yucatecan version of pork cooked in beans. It is served with rice and tomato salsa, and dressed with radish, cilantro, and onion. Frijol con Puerco is usually served on Mondays in Yucatecan homes.

HUEVOS MOTULEÑOS. A delicious breakfast! Fried eggs are served atop a tostada covered with refried beans, and dressed with tomato salsa, chopped ham, and peas. It can be served with slices of fried plantain.
POC-CHUC. Thinly sliced pork marinated in sour orange juice, grilled, and served juicy with tomato salsa and chopped purple onion and beans on the side.
PANUCHOS AND SALBUTES. Corn tortillas topped with chicken, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and onion. The only difference between the two is that the panucho has refried beans inside the tortilla, and the salbút does not.
POLCANES. The “polcán” (serpent head) gets its name from its shape. It is a Yucatecan appetizer made from corn meal and stuffed with chives, pumpkin seed, and white beans, and some versions also include meat.

This dish, similar to a tamal, is traditionally prepared for “Hanal Pixan” (Day of the Dead); however, it can be eaten all year long, for its
Edam-like “queso de bola,” stuffed with ground beef and pork. It is delicately spiced and is served in a white sauce made of flour and chicken broth, and is finally topped with tomato sauce. RELLENO NEGRO. This unusual dish gets its dark black color from the spices it contains. Relleno negro combines turkey, ground meat (“but”), and broth. The “but” which is the soul of this dish is made with tomato, pepper, chopped egg, oregano, achiote, cumin, epazote, and black “recado” paste, made into a meatball-like dough, lightly fried, and to this the broth and the turkey are added while it finishes cooking. SOPA DE LIMA. Iconic Yucatecan broth served with shredded chicken or turkey, tortilla strips, and lime juice. Definitely a must during your visit to Yucatán!

hichén Itzá fué la capital sobresaliente del área maya a finales del período Clásico e inicios del Posclásico. Está localizado a hora y media de Mérida (130 km). Su nombre se deriva de las palabras mayas “chi” -boca-, “chén” -pozo- e “itzá”, que era el nombre del pueblo de esta región. El sitio está dividido en tres áreas: el grupo norte (estilo Tolteca), el grupo central (del período Temprano) y el conocido como “viejo Chichén”. Las pirámides incluyen la Pirámide de Kukulkán, El Templo de los Guerreros, El Juego de Pelota, Las Monjas y El Caracol, entre otros. El Cenote Sagrado es enorme y es abierto, como un pozo, y ahí encontraron cerámica, tela, oro, jade y esqueletos. No se puede nadar aquí. Es una visita obligada al conocer Yucatán. En el parador turístico hay baños, restaurantes, tiendas, servicio de paquetería y un mini museo. Afuera hay puestos con recuerdos y regalos de todos tipos y precios. Desde 2006 no se permite subir a las pirámides. La entrada tiene un costo de $481 pesos para extranjeros y $202 pesos para mexicanos. Puedes llegar a Chichén Itzá mediante las excursiones diarias de las agencias de viajes con todo incluido, en automóvil rentado o por línea de autobuses públicos que salen aproximadamente cada hora. Puedes hacer el viaje de un día, o si lo prefieres, pernoctar ahí. Gran parte de este sitio es accesible para sillas de ruedas.

hichén Itzá was the most important Maya capital at the end of the Classical Period. These famous Maya pyramids are a mere 1.5 hours from Mérida. The name Chichén Itzá is derived from the Maya language: “Chi” (mouth), “Chén” (well) and “Itzá” (the name of the group of people that inhabited the area). This archaeological site is divided into three areas: the north group, distinctly Toltec; the central group, early period; and the area known as the Old Chichén. The huge well-like Sacred Cenote is north of the Kukulkán pyramid, where ceramics, fabric, gold, jade, and skeletons have been found underwater. This cenote is not open for swimming. DZIBILCHALTÚN el “Lugar Donde hay D zibilchaltún, Escritura sobre Piedras Planas”, es
una gran ciudad maya considerada de las más antiguas y se encuentra a 16 km al noreste de Mérida. Una vez en este lugar, no te pierdas la oportunidad de visitar el Museo del Pueblo Maya. Admira la casa típica maya y camina por el camino ecológico lleno de árboles, propios de la región, con indicaciones que te llevarán a las pirámides. Sobresale el famoso Templo de las Siete Muñecas, que debe su nombre a que se encontraron 7 figurillas de barro en el santuario. Es aquí donde cada 21 de marzo y 22 de septiembre se celebra el equinoccio, cuando el sol brilla a través del templo.
Después dirígete al cenote Xlacáh, cuyo nombre significa “pueblo antiguo”, que está a nivel del suelo, puedes tomar un refrescante baño en sus cristalinas aguas.

Para llegar: En auto, toma la carretera a Progreso y a la altura del kilómetro 12 hay letreros que indican la salida a Dzibilchaltún, sigue derecho y te encontrarás con los letreros de entrada justo al final del pueblo. En autobús: sal del sitio de combis en la Calle 61 entre 54 y 56, “Ruta Chablekal”. Como tercera opción puedes tomar un tour con tu agencia de viajes preferida. La entrada tiene un costo de $227 pesos para extranjeros y $124 pesos nacionales. Los domingos, los mexicanos no pagan.

is the “place where there D zibilchaltún is writing on the stones,” a great Maya city that is only 12 km north of Mérida. We recommend hiring a guide at your arrival to explain the archaeological and astronomic wonders of this site. Don’t miss the Museo del Pueblo Maya. To reach the ruins, walk the winding path past ancient Maya stone sculptures. Enjoy the comprehensive and well-designed air conditioned museum, tracing the steps of the Maya from antiquity to the present. Then follow the ecological path flanked by trees from the region, identified with their names. This will take you to the “Templo de las Siete Muñecas,” (Temple of the Sev-
en Dolls). It was named for the seven small sculptures excavated here and now residing in the onsite museum. This temple is situated so that every year, on the 21st of March and 22nd of September, the spring and fall equinoxes, the sun shines directly through the doorway as it rises. Many other temples on the grounds have also been rebuilt and restored. Dzibilchaltún is a great place to wander, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, climb some of the structures and imagine what life must have been like there hundreds of years ago. Last but not least, head for the Xlacáh cenote for a refreshing swim. This cenote is open to the public until 3:30 pm. It tends to get a little busy on weekends. One end of the cenote is very shallow, while the other is over 140 feet deep and continues on into a tunnel. How to get there: By car, take the Mérida-Progreso highway and at the 12th kilometer you will see the sign to turn to Dzibilchaltún. Drive about four kilometers and it will be to your right as you pass the little town. By bus: it leaves from the “combi” bus stop on Calle 61 between 54 and 56, “Ruta Chablekal.” Or go on a tour with your favorite travel agency. zación maya. Puuc significa “serranía”, y los sitios incluyen Uxmal, Kabáh, Sayil, Xlapak, Labná, las grutas de Loltún, haciendas (Yaxcopoil, Ochil restaurante/museo, Temozón boutique hotel/restaurante), cenotes, pueblos y ciudades mayas (Ticul, Oxkutzcab).
Para hacer este recorrido, puedes rentar un automóvil y seguir nuestro mapa o tomar un tour con una agencia de viajes. Hay autobuses a Uxmal saliendo de la terminal ubicada en la Calle 69 por 68 y 70, tel. (999) 924 0830 ext. 2909. O puedes pasar la noche en Oxkutzcab (Hotel Puuc) o en Ticul (Hotel Plaza). Para recorrer el circuito, te recomendamos comenzar el día temprano por las grutas de Loltún. Sigue los anuncios al sur hacia Uxmal. En Muna, sigue a la izquierda y sigue los anuncios a Loltún. Así llegarás por la mañana para tomar un tour guiado (única forma de entrar a las grutas). Entrada $109 pesos nacionales y $146 pesos extranjeros. La próxima parada (20 km) es Labná (“Casa Vieja”). Habitada entre los años 750 y 1000 d.C. por unas 1,500 - 2,500 personas, hoy en día son cuatro los edificios restaurados y tienen muchos montículos alrededor. El palacio tiene unos 70 “chultunes” (cisternas de agua). También verás el Arco de Labná, el centro de la ciudad y

A 6 kilómetros sobre la misma carretera, se encuentra Xlapak (“Paredes Viejas”). Aquí hay 14 montículos con tres pirámides. Este sitio es uno de los menos restaurados y reconstruidos, lo que da una idea de cómo los encontraron los primeros exploradores. Entrada gratuita.
Continuando, la próxima parada es Kabáh (“El señor de la Mano Fuerte y Poderosa”). Para llegar, toma la carretera a la derecha a unos 10 km de Sayil. Kabáh es famoso por el edificio Codz Pop, con la representación del Dios Chaac (de la lluvia) en 250 mascarones tallados en piedra. También hay dos grandes figuras en la parte anterior del edificio. Entrada $50 pesos.
Sayil (“Lugar de las Hormigas Arrieras”) está a 5 kilómetros. En la entrada hay un museo al aire libre. Sayil data de los años 800 - 1,000 d.C. En su apogeo, el Palacio tenía 90 recámaras donde vivían unas 350 personas. Desde el segundo nivel, atrás, se puede ver la Iglesia de Santa Elena y también un pequeño templo llamado Nueve Máscaras, a un costado de la sierra. Entrada $50 pesos.
La última parada en el circuito y la más restaurada es Uxmal, también conocida como “La Tres Veces Construida”. PUUC ROUTE
T
he Puuc Route, or Ruta Puuc, is an interesting and obligatory trip when you come to Yucatán. Just 80 km south of Mérida, this is a do-able day trip. On this route there are Maya sites (Uxmal, Kabáh, Sayil, X-Lapak, Labná), the caves of Loltún, haciendas (Yaxcopoil, Ochil restaurant/ museum, Temozón boutique hotel/restaurant), cenotes, Maya villages, and larger Maya city/towns (Ticul, Oxkutzcab). To do this route, you can either rent a car and follow our map or take a tour with a travel agency. There are buses to Uxmal departing from the terminal on Calle 69 between 68 and 70, tel. (999) 924 0830 ext. 2909. Or you can spend the night in Oxkutzcab (Hotel Puuc) or Ticul (Hotel Plaza). ed tour of the caves in the morning. Tours are the only way you can get into the caves. Entrance $146 pesos for foreigners and $109 pesos for Mexicans. The next stop will bring you to Labná, once a city of some 1,500 - 2,500 people, inhabited between 750 and 1000 AD. Presently, four buildings are in a restored state. Notice the caretaker’s open thatched roof home as you enter the site. The large palace is well restored and houses 70 “chultunes” (water cisterns) that are, unfortunately, not visible. Also here is the much-photographed arch that is thought to be the center of the city and the entrance to the “sacbé” (white road or Maya highway) that went to Uxmal. The caretaker’s wife sells plants if you are interested! Entrance $50 pesos. Next you will come to Xlapak which means “unglued walls”, a site of some 14 mounds and three somewhat restored pyramids. This site and Sayil are less restored and manicured, so you can see what the sites looked like when they were discovered. Notice the many carved stones just lying around on the ground. Free entrance. Five kilometers from this turn is Sayil, which means “the place of the ants.” At the entrance you will see an outdoor museum under a thatched roof. Check out the huge stellae dating from 800 - 1000 AD. This site is home to a beautiful palace that included 90 bedrooms for some 350 people. From the top level of the palace you can see the church at Santa Elena and across the way a tiny Maya site on the
side of a mountain, which is called “the nine masks”. There are restrooms here. Entrance $50 pesos. Your next stop will be Kabáh. You will have to turn right five km out of Sayil at the “T” in the road. Kabáh is famous for its incredibly ornate Codz Pop building, with its representation of Chaac, the Maya rain god, in 250 masks. Also take a look at the two large figures on the back of this building. Entrance $50 pesos. Just a few km. down the road is Uxmal. The most “manicured” of the sites and last stop in this route, Uxmal means “the thrice built city” with the colossal “Pirámide del Adivino,” impressive “Palacio del Gobernador,” intricate “Palomar” and “Cuadrángulo de las Monjas.” Uxmal has a tourist center with shops, restaurants and bathrooms. Entrance $413 pesos for foreigners and $176 pesos for Mexicans. Much of this site is wheelchair accessible. Don’t miss the chance to visit Choco-Story (chocolate museum) across from the archaeological site of Uxmal, where you can travel back in time to an era of splendor in a Maya pueblo setting. You will also be able to taste a delicious natural cacao beverage. Important information: All sites are open 365 days a year, from 8 am to 5 pm. Climbing to the top of the Pirámide del Adivino in Uxmal is no longer allowed. Light and sound show at Uxmal is at 7 pm every night during fall and winter and 8 pm during spring and summer. ra intrigante en la cual tendrás un día entero de emociones. Esta singular ruta te llevará a conocer el corazón de Yucatán, sus pueblos y sitios arqueológicos mayas, conventos, iglesias, catedrales, templos coloniales, atrios y cenotes.
La mejor manera de recorrer la ruta es en automóvil. Partiendo de Mérida temprano (8 am) con un tanque lleno de gasolina, toma el Periférico hacia el oriente rumbo a Kanasín. Después sigue los letreros a Acancéh. Cada visita durará de 10 a 45 minutos. A 22 km de Kanasín se encuentra Acancéh, donde verás una combinación interesante del pasado y presente. Su principal atractivo es la Plaza de las Tres Culturas, que conjuga las épocas prehispánica, colonial y contemporánea. Destaca el templo dedicado a nuestra Señora de la Natividad y la capilla de la Virgen de Guadalupe. A unas cuadras está el Templo de los Estucos, donde verás jeroglíficos. Tecóh, a unos 8 kilómetros de distancia, tiene un mercado, una iglesia y un convento dedicado a la Virgen de la Asunción. Construida sobre la base de una pirámide maya, la iglesia tiene piedra labrada, un altar impresionante y muchas pinturas. Visita Hacienda Sotuta de Peón, construida a finales del siglo XIX; es una de las pocas haciendas henequeneras que existe en plena producción y en la que la historia se encuentra viva.

A continuación se encuentra Telchaquillo, un pueblo pequeño que tiene una iglesia muy austera y un cenote cristalino en la plaza, con una escalinata para bajar, así que prepárate y lleva tu traje de baño. Unos kilómetros después, a mano derecha, está la fantástica zona arqueológica de Mayapán. Amurallada y con 4,000 montículos, esta ciudad se parece mucho a Chichén Itzá en tamaño e importancia. Es considerada como la última gran capital maya. Entrada: $45 pesos. El siguiente poblado es Tekit (30 km), un pueblo próspero donde encontrarás la parroquia de San Antonio de Padua, un templo grande lleno de estatuas de santos en todos sus nichos. Parece un museo y el altar es muy sencillo pero hermoso.

El siguiente pueblo es uno pequeño de nombre Mama (7 km). Conocido por la iglesia coronada con un campanario, la parte posterior del templo cuenta con un hermoso jardín, una noria y santos en cada nicho. El altar está muy adornado. Se cree que esta iglesia es la más antigua de la ruta. Admira su templo y ex convento franciscano que presentan al frente un hermoso campanario, casi como un atrio cerrado, el cual es uno de los más famosos en la región. A 9 km en la ruta está Chumayel (“Lugar de las Semillas”), cuna de uno de los más importantes documentos, el Chilam Balam, libro sagrado de los mayas. En este poblado puedes apreciar el Templo de la Purísima Concepción, construido en el siglo XVI. Es un claro ejemplo de la arquitectura religiosa de tipo almenado, medieval, trasplantada a Yucatán por los primeros españoles. En el interior del templo se encuentra un Cristo de madera negra, de interés muy especial. Teabo (a 6 km) es conocido por dos representativas construcciones sacras: la Parroquia y el ex convento de San Pedro y San Pablo, construidos durante el siglo XVII. En el interior destaca un retablo que tiene un par de columnas cariátides y la Capilla de Indios que ostenta la fecha 1617. También es conocido por sus vestidos y huipiles bordados.
El último y tal vez más importante punto de la Ruta de los Conventos es Maní (12 km), donde encontrarás una enorme iglesia, un convento y un museo con explicaciones en español, inglés, francés y maya. Ve el Templo del Convento de San Miguel Arcángel, cuya fundación data de 1549. Es aquí donde Fray Diego de Landa ordenó la quema y destrucción de muchos documentos y estatuas mayas durante el movimiento franciscano para convertir a los indígenas al cristianismo. Se destruyeron unos 5,000 ídolos, 13 altares, 27 pergaminos en piel de venado y 197 vasijas de diferentes formas y tamaños. Al darse cuenta de su gran error, Fray Diego comenzó a escribir todo lo que podía recordar. Este documento se llama Relación de las Cosas de Yucatán. Hoy, Maní es un sitio religioso de mucha importancia. Si estás en Yucatán en Semana Santa, no pierdas la oportunidad de ir. Ticul, Maní y Oxkutzcab ofrecen rica comida yucateca en el restaurante Príncipe Tutul Xiu. Ticul es buena opción para pasar la noche si quieres hacer la Ruta Puuc al día siguiente. Tiene hoteles pequeños y limpios y está en camino a las Grutas de Loltún. Para regresar a Mérida, sigue tu camino con dirección hacia Ticul, después a Muna, Umán y Mérida.

CONVENT ROUTE enticing than ever, The Convent M ore Route is a day trip that will take you somewhat off the beaten path and into the heart of Yucatán. Meandering through the countryside of the west-central part of the state, you will visit Maya villages and archaeological sites, colonial churches, cathedrals and convents, courtyards and cenotes, all dating back centuries. The best way to do this route is by car. Gas up before leaving (one full tank will more than suffice). You should try to be on the road by 8 am. Start on the “Periférico” and go to Route 18 towards Kanasín. Follow the signs to Acancéh and on from there. The amount of time spent at each stop will vary from 10 to 45 minutes.

Tecoh, 8 km down the road, has a market and a very ornate church and convent dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption. The carved stones and altar of the church, built upon the base of a very large Maya pyramid, along with the statues and paintings, are impressive. Visit Hacienda Sotuta de Peón, one

of the few henequén haciendas which is still in full production; the history is “live.” Next on the route is Telchaquillo, a small village that has a small, austere chapel and a wonderful cenote in the plaza that you can visit. Stairs have been carved for your convenience. Several kilometers out of Telchaquillo off to the right you will find the fantastic Maya pyramids of Mayapán. This walled city has 4,000 mounds. Mayapán is the size of Chichén Itzá, and an equally important city. Mayapán is considered the last great Maya capital. Entry: $45 pesos. Continue on 30 km to Tekit, a large prosperous-looking village. There you will find the parish of “San Antonio De Padua,” with a large temple that houses many ornate statues of saints in their individual niches. The altar itself is very simple but beautiful. The next small village, Mama, is a little over 7 km away. Mama is famous for its large beautiful bell-globed church containing a large garden, a well, and a closed atrium along with frescos on the wall, statues of saints in the niches, and a very ornate altar. It is believed this is the oldest church on the route. The temple and ex-Franciscan convent show the beautiful bell tower, irresistible to admire, as well as a closed atrium, which is the most famous of the region. Following the route for 10 more km, you will next come to Chumayel (Place of the Seeds) where the famous document “Chilam Balam” was found, sacred book of the Maya.
Here you can see the Templo de la Purísima Concepción built in the XVI century. This is a clear example of the medieval religious architecture brought to Yucatán by the first Spaniards. In the interior is the black wooden Christ, especially interesting. Teabo (6 km) is known for its two sacred buildings: the Parroquia and the Ex Convento de San Pedro y San Pablo, built during the 17th century. The interior has an altarpiece with a pair of caryatid columns and the Capilla de Indios from 1617. This area is also known for its embroidered hipiles. The final and perhaps most important stop on the Convent Route is Maní, where you will find a large church, convent and museum with explanations in English, Spanish, French and Maya. See Convento de San Miguel Arcángel, dating from 1549. This is the place where Fray Diego de Landa ordered the burning and destruction of many Maya statues and documents during the Franciscan movement to convert the indigenous peoples to Christianity. They destroyed 5000 idols, 13 altars, 27 deerskin parchments, and 197 vessels of varying shapes and sizes. Upon realizing his great error, Fray Diego began to write down everything he could recall. This document is called “Relación de las Cosas de Yucatán.” If you are in Yucatán during Holy Week, be sure to visit Maní.
Where to Go and How!
22 km from Kanasín is Acancéh, where you will see an interesting combination of past and present. The main attraction is the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, which joins the pre-Hispanic, colonial, and modern eras. Note the temple dedicated to our Lady of the Nativity and the chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Several blocks away are more remains of Maya pyramids with hieroglyphs. Ask around for the Templo de los Estucos, about four blocks away. Entry: $45 pesos.

ituada a la mitad del camino entre Mérida y Cancún, Valladolid, “Pueblo Mágico” de México, es una pintoresca ciudad colonial con barrios de gran majestuosidad y belleza. Ha sido conocida desde 1823 como “La Sultana del Oriente”, título merecido tanto por la belleza arquitectónica de sus edificaciones coloniales, tales como el Convento de San Bernardino de Siena, el Palacio Municipal, la Iglesia de San Servacio y el Museo de San Roque, entre otros; como también por la herencia arquitectónica del siglo XIX y principios del XX: el Ex Telar de la Aurora y el Parque Central Francisco Cantón de Rosado. Valladolid fue fundada por Don Francisco de Montejo “El Sobrino” en 1543 y adquirió la categoría de ciudad en 1823. Valladolid es el lugar donde sucedieron dos grandes pasajes de la historia de México: la Guerra de Castas en 1847, y la primera chispa de la Revolución Mexicana en 1910, misma que celebran cada año el 3 de junio con diferentes festejos deportivos y culturales. Visita el sitio arqueológico de Ek Balam, a sólo 20 minutos al norte de Valladolid. Ek Balam es un nombre en lengua maya que se traduce al español como “jaguar oscuro o negro”. Fundada en el año 100 a.C., alcanzó su esplendor en el período Clásico Tardío entre el año 600 y 1000 d.C. Abarca un área de 12 km² de asentamiento continuo, tiene 45 estructuras, está rodeada de dos murallas concéntricas de piedra, existe también una tercera muralla que une algunos de los edificios principales, tiene un juego de pelota, una importante red de caminos, estelas y otros monumentos. Los antiguos pobladores se abastecían de agua en los escasos cenotes del área, y en los “chultunes” (depósitos subterráneos artificiales). Las estructuras presentan varios estilos arquitectónicos, es decir, influencias del Puuc, de la costa oriental en Campeche, pero hay detalles que las hacen únicas, se habla de imágenes con alas semejantes a los ángeles. Los edificios principales están distribuidos en dos plazas. La Acrópolis, es una de las construcciones más voluminosas de Mesoamérica. Aquí verás esculturas, máscaras, figuras y jeroglíficos. ocated halfway (two hours from each) between Mérida and Cancún, Valladolid, “Pueblo Mágico” of México, is a bustling Maya city with a special colonial flavor. This is where you will see the majority of the townspeople still using the typical dress of the Maya, and the buildings around the main plaza painted pastel colors. You will surely get a sense of the laid-back pace of life.
Valladolid was founded by Don Francisco de Montejo “The Nephew” in 1543 and acquired the category of city in 1823. Valladolid is the setting of two of Mexico’s most significant events: the Caste War in 1847 and the “first spark” of the Mexican Revolution in 1910. From the beginning, Valladolid has had the structure of the Spanish establishments in Yucatán, with a checkerboard design, wide streets, and its great main plaza, today known as Parque Francisco Cantón. It is divided into the city center and its neighborhoods; the whole together is known as the Centro Histórico.
Ek Balam
Hotels are quite reasonable in Valladolid making it a good place to use as a base for going to Chichén Itzá 45 km away and the Balankanché Caves 35 km away. Consider staying for two nights so you can really get a feel for the place. Valladolid also has very important cenotes, such as Dzitnup, about 5 kilometers west and Zaci, just a few blocks from the main plaza. There is an English library, Valladolid English Library, on Calle 49 at 40.
There is a building across from the plaza where you will find a group of Maya women selling crafts that include hand-embroidered dresses and blouses, Barbie dresses, handkerchiefs, hammocks and more. The statue of a Maya woman in the middle of the park is a typical place to have your picture taken. Don’t miss Dutzi Handbags, a co-op which supports local Maya men and women.
Don’t miss a chance to have a tour of Casa de los Venados (House of the Deer), a private home-museum of Mexican folk and contemporary art. Tours (in English and Spanish) are given most days at 10 am but reservations in advance are advised. It is located on Calle 40 #204 at the corner of 41. And while in Valladolid, you are in the heart of good Yucatecan cooking country. Try the flavorful cuisine of Valladolid in such dishes as “lomitos de Valladolid,” “longaniza,” and “pavo en escabeche.” Longaniza de Valladolid is a sausage that is made locally. Try it with scrambled eggs or grilled and wrapped in a tortilla. Both ways are delicious!
Visit the impressive Ek Balam archaeological site 20 minutes north of Valladolid on the road to Tizimín. The pyramids here are bigger than the ones at Chichén Itzá. Ek Balam is a name in Yucatecan Maya that can be literally translated as “black or dark jaguar.” Founded in the year 100 BC, it was probably one of the most powerful Prehispanic Maya
cities economically, religiously, and socially speaking. It reached the height of its power during the Late Classical period of 600 - 1000 AD. This important city covered some 12 square kilometers. Containing 45 structures, the site is surrounded by two stone walls; there is also a third wall between some of the principal buildings. You will also find a ball court, an important series of roads, stelae and other monuments, including the original wells they built, called “chultunes.” The structures show various architectural styles and influences. These include Puuc influence, from the western coast of Campeche. There are also some characteristic details, such as winged idols resembling angels, that are unique to this site. The main buildings are divided into two plaza areas. The Acropolis is one of the most voluminous structures in Mesoamerica. Here you will see statues, masks, figurines and hieroglyphs. Open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Cost is $413 pesos foreigners, $153 pesos Mexicans. How to get there: To get to Valladolid from Mérida, take the cuota road toward Cancún, the cost is $149 pesos. Or you can drive on the free road and go through several interesting Maya villages. If you want to take public transportation, ADO has departures all day. Price $176 or $155 pesos one way. There are also colectivos departing from Calle 52 between 63 and 61.

IZAMAL: LA CIUDAD DE LOS CERROS justo en el centro de la PenínU bicada sula, podría ser la ciudad más anti-
gua, dentro de la cual yerguen cinco pirámides mayas. Su historia está muy apegada a hechos religiosos. Fue conquistada por los frailes franciscanos en su afán de evangelizar a los indígenas, dando como resultado hoy en día la devoción a María Inmaculada. El atractivo principal es el Convento franciscano San Antonio de Padua, que fue edificado sobre una de las pirámides mayas. Es famoso también por Fray Diego de Landa, su fundador, quien es conocido por haber quemado las deidades y códices mayas en su Auto de Fe, y arrepentido, escribió todo lo que pudo recordar en su manuscrito “Relación de las cosas de Yucatán”. Este convento fue visitado por el Papa Juan Pablo II en 1993, dando una conferencia únicamente para los indígenas de la zona. Toma nota de sus retablos restaurados, el vitral de San Francisco de Asís y las estaciones del Vía Crucis. Después, sube al segundo piso a ver la camarina de la estatua de Nuestra Señora de Izamal, Reina y Patrona de Yucatán. Considerada una joya colonial, todos los edificios están pintados de color amarillo huevo, haciendo parecer a esta pequeña ciudad el set de una película. Las calles de adocreto y las lámparas de estilo colonial, completan esta sensación.

ocated right in the middle of the Peninsula, Izamal may be the oldest city in Yucatán. Its history is very attached to religious events. Izamal was conquered by the Spaniards, and it was the monks in their eagerness to convert the indigenous Maya to Catholicism that gave the city its religious distinction. To this day, Izamal’s people are very devoted to the Immaculate Virgin. An important sight in Izamal is the Franciscan Convent San Antonio de Padua that was built from and over one of the Maya pyramids. This convent is also famous for the story of the monk Fray Diego de Landa, its founder, who burned all the Maya scripts, and then feeling remorse for what he had done, tried to write all he could remember of the ways of the Maya in the “Relación de Cosas de Yucatán.”
Note the beautifully restored altarpiece, the stained-glass window of St. Francis of Assisi, and the many statues along the walls. The second floor is where the statue of Our Lady of Izamal, Queen and Patron Saint of Yucatán, is housed. Note all the gold-leaf paint, crystal chandeliers, flowers and elegantly painted walls. A small church store with postcards and religious souvenirs is on the first floor. Izamal is a jewel of a colonial city, with just about all the buildings painted an eggyolk yellow, making the entire town look like a movie set. Cobblestone streets and colonial lamp posts complete the scenery. There are Maya pyramids right in
the city (Kinich Kakmo, the most important, Kabul, Itzamatul and El Conejo), colonial-style buildings, parks and plazas, and lots of people for people watching. Visit the Museo de la Comunidad, located under the Convent facing Parque Cinco de Mayo, and the stunning Centro Cultural y Artesanal on the main plaza. It is a museum of Mexican folk art, café, handcrafts store, and spa. While in Izamal, make a point to visit Galería Tres Pájaros with art and antiques, and quirky folk art store Hecho a Mano. In Izamal you will find delicious Yucatecan cuisine. You can eat at the thatched roof Kinich about four blocks from the plaza. You can also visit the Lakin-Ha caves, with a restaurant on site, 1/2 km east of Izamal on Calle 31. The light and sound show is held from Thursday to Saturday at 8 pm. The cost

CENOTES CENOTILLO Este pueblo debe su nombre a la gran cantidad de cenotes que existen tanto en el poblado como en sus alrededores. Según la gente local, existen más de 150 de ellos. Los principales son Kaipech, Xayín, Xoch, Yook Chac y Ucil. CUZAMÁ Hay 3 cooperativos aquí. Los 3 cenotes Chelentún, Santa Cruz y Dzapakal son manejados por Grupo Organizado Chelentún, en Hacienda Chunkanán, a 3 km al sur de Cuzamá. XLACAH Ubicado en la zona arqueológica de Dzibilchaltún, es el más cercano a la ciudad de Mérida. Es un cenote abierto, excelente lugar para nadar después de visitar el sitio arqueológico.
IK KIL Situado en el Parque Eco-arqueológico Ik Kil a 3 km de Chichén Itzá. Es un cenote perfectamente redondo tipo pozo abierto con vegetación exuberante y cáscadas de agua. Una gran escalinata te llevará al agua. X’KEKÉN Y SAMULÁ Localizado en Dzitnup, a 5 km al suroeste de Valladolid, estos cenotes están dentro de una cámara subterránea. El agua es poco profunda y es tan limpia y clara que se pueden observar a los peces.
YOKDZONOT Ubicado a tan sólo 10 minutos de Chichén Itzá, nadar en este cenote es una experiencia mágica, con los pequeños peces alrededor de ti, los pájaros en los árboles entonando sus canciones y los “turixes” (libélulas) volando sobre la superficie del agua fresca y limpia. ome of the most important and unusual natural wonders of the state of Yucatán are the cenotes, or sinkholes. On the Yucatán Peninsula there are over 6,000 cenotes, with only 2,400 actually studied and registered. There are different types of cenotes: completely underground, semi-underground, at land level and open wells. Cenotes are magical, enigmatic and unique in the world, and are the only resource for fresh, sweet water in the local Yucatecan jungle. Sacred to the Maya because they represented the entrance to the underworld.
DZUL-HÁ Its Maya name means “Gentleman of the water” and it is located at the Hacienda Sotuta de Peón. Monday to Sunday half tour package includes: tour in “truck” and visit to Casa Maya. IK KIL Located in the Eco-archaeological Park Ik Kil, just 3 km from Chichén Itzá. It is a well-type cenote with exuberant vegetation and waterfalls. Stairs lead down to the water. There is also an excellent buffet-style restaurant here, and bungalows, so enjoy a delicious lunch in this spectacular place. X’KEKÉN AND SAMULÁ Located in Dzitnup 5 km southeast of Valladolid, these two beautiful cenotes are
underground with a hole in the ceiling. Deep, refreshing, crystal-clear waters await you. XLACAH Located at the Maya site of Dzibilchaltún, this is the closest cenote to Mérida. It is an open, ground-level cenote, great for swimming. It is a great place to jump into after a visit to the archaeological site and its splendid museum. YOKDZONOT Just 10 minutes from Chichén Itzá, a swim in this cenote is a magical experience. Small fish dart all around you, birds are swooping overhead and singing and dragonflies flutter above the water’s surface. The water is cool and clean. There’s a kitchen offering inexpensive Yucatecan cuisine. ZACÍ Located in Valladolid, this semi-open cenote is ideal for cooling off in the refreshing emerald green waters. While you are swimming, you will see a rare species of eyeless black fish that are commonly known as “lub.”

a Península de Yucatán está llena de lagos, rías, cenotes y grutas subterráneas. Las grutas fueron lugares sagrados para los mayas y son bastante impresionantes. Cuando las visites, es importante SIEMPRE entrar con un guía, ya que algunas son complejas y largas. BALANKANCHÉ Localizada a 6 km de Chichén Itzá, es una caverna que fungió como centro ceremonial de los antiguos pobladores mayas. También hay un espectáculo de luz y sonido, en el cual se relata la historia de las grutas. Puedes admirar estalactitas y otras formaciones de roca. A 200 metros de la entrada se encuentra el Trono de Balam y al centro de la sala se alza un gran pilar formado por la fusión de una estalactita con una estalagmita, asemejando una gran ceiba, llamada “la ceiba sagrada que crece en el interior de la tierra”.

CALCEHTOK También conocidas como X-Pukil, segundas más grandes de la Península. Tienen un sistema muy complejo de túneles, por lo que es preciso contratar un guía. El nombre se deriva del maya “cal” (cuello), “ceh” (venado) y “tok” (pedernal). En toda la caverna hay abundante material prehispánico: huesos de animales, cuchillos de obsidiana, esculturas en piedras y haltunes (estructuras de piedra para contener agua). En varias cuevas puedes ver formaciones naturales con semejanza a objetos, animales y rostros. Alrededor de Calcehtok existen más de 30 grutas, que se cree que están comunicadas.

LOLTÚN Su nombre proviene del maya “Lol” (flor) y “Tún” (piedra). A sólo 100 km al suroeste de Mérida en Oxkutzcab, son las más grandes de la Península y las más estudiadas. La gruta ha sido acondicionada para paseos turísticos con senderos iluminados. El recorrido es de aprox. mil metros, en donde se han encontrado osamentas de animales y pinturas rupestres, al final se encuentra una bóveda desplomada. La gruta cuenta con servicio de guía, no está incluído en el costo de la entrada, recomendamos dejar propina. Solo se puede entrar en grupos guiados. Horario: 9:30 am, 11:00 am, 12:30 pm, 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm y 4:00 pm. Todos los días.
TZABNAH Se encuentran a 40 km al sureste de Mérida en Tecóh. Su nombre significa “palacio del rey”. Hay estalactitas, estalagmitas, columnas, profundos precipicios y 13 cenotes de diversos tamaños. Entre los atractivos, figura una forma cavernosa conocida como “la cúpula de la Catedral”, por el parecido que tiene con la Catedral de Mérida. Pueden realizarse paseos a cualquier hora del día, ya que siempre hay un encargado en el lugar.

he caves were sacred places for the Maya. When visiting the caves, it is important to ALWAYS enter with a guide. BALANKANCHÉ Located six kilometers from Chichén Itzá, these caves were an important ceremonial site for the Maya. A light and sound show that relates the history of these caverns has been incorporated into the caves. There are impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations within. Two hundred meters from the entrance is the Balam Throne. In the same chamber is a stalagmite formation that resembles a ceiba tree. It is said to be the “sacred tree inside the earth.” CALCEHTOK Also known as X-Pukil, these are the second largest caves. These caves have a rather complicated series of tunnels, making it obligatory to use a guide. The
name is derived from the Maya words “cal” (neck), “ceh” (deer) and “tok” (stone). Within the caves are a great number of pre-hispanic findings, such as intact plates, quartz hammers, stone sculptures, obsidian knives, human burial sites and “haltunes” - stone-type receptacles for water collection. You will see natural formations that resemble different objects. LOLTÚN This name is derived from two Maya words, “Lol” (flower) and “Tún” (stone). Located 100 km from Mérida in Oxkutzcab, these are the largest caves on the Peninsula and the most studied. The one km route through the caves has been set up to make the going easy. Mamut bones have been found along with frescoes paintings on the walls. At the end of the route is a majestic open dome. The guided tours are daily at 9:30 and 11:00 am, 12:30, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 pm. The guides do not charge for their services, so we recommend that you tip them as this is their income. TZABNAH Located 40 kilometers south of Mérida in the village of Tecóh. The name means “the king’s palace.” There are stalactites, stalagmites, columns, deep crevices and 13 cenotes within. On the route through the caves is a huge chamber known as the Cathedral Cupula that resembles the Cathedral of Mérida. You can visit at any hour of the day, as there is always someone available to guide you through.

ituado a 96 km de Mérida rumbo al Oeste, este bello puerto de pescadores es realmente pintoresco. Su infraestructura incluye el Hotel Xixim, las casas de huéspedes Casa Celeste Vida y Castillito Kin-Nah; varios restaurantes, pequeñas tiendas y un puerto de abrigo. Celestún es famoso no solo por sus restaurantes de mariscos, sino también por la ría, sus hermosos flamingos, ojos de agua, sus tranquilas playas y las charcas salineras.
Tarifas para tour de una hora con 15 minutos, hasta 6 pasajeros: $1,800 pesos. ocated 96 kilometers southwest of Mérida, Celestún is a typical fishing village with several hotels including Hotel Xixim, and the guest houses Casa Celeste Vida and Castillito Kin-Nah. You will also find very good seafood restaurants and small shops and a harbor. Celestún is not only famous for its seafood restaurants, but also for its ría, beautiful flamingo colonies, fresh water springs, calm beaches and salt fields. The main attraction in Celestún is to hire a boat to go to the ría to see the flamingos. PROGRESO rogreso de Castro es el puerto más importante de Yucatán y recibe su nombre gracias al primer promotor de Progreso: Juan Miguel Castro. Este puerto es también un gran destino turístico en el estado ya que ofrece muchos atractivos: desde reservas naturales, hasta restaurantes y actividades recreativas. Su cercanía a Mérida fue lo que originalmente hizo que este puerto cobrara importancia, ya que se inauguró en 1871 por la necesidad de trasladar la aduana de Sisal a un lugar más cercano a la capital, esto por el comercio del henequén del siglo XIX. Entre los monumentos del puerto figuran el faro de Progreso que se inauguró en 1893 y el muelle de altura que se considera entre los más largos del mundo; éste se concluyó en 1947 y ayudó a convertir a Progreso en un importante centro comercial. Hoy por hoy, el puerto también es un destino para cruceros turísticos. En frente al faro, podrás ver el mercado de Progreso. Aquí encontrarás puestos de comida regional, artesanías, frutas y verduras de la temporada, mariscos y más.
Otro atractivo que no te puedes perder es el “Malecón Internacional de Progreso”. Aquí encontrarás varios restaurantes que sirven deliciosas especialidades de mariscos, ya sea en sus establecimientos fijos o bajo palapas sobre la playa para que disfrutes el ambiente que más se te antoje; también encontrarás tiendas y puestos con artesanías. En los fines de semana, es común ver paseos en “banana” y masajistas que ofrecen servicios frente al mar. Los yucatecos también amamos ir a Progreso en sábado y domingo; en estos días podrás ver a varios que buscan refrescarse con un baño en el mar. No olvides dejar tiempo en tu itinerario para caminar por el malecón hasta llegar a la famosa “Casa del Pastel” (la reconocerás enseguida por su parecido a un pastel de tres pisos); después tómate una foto en el letrero de Progreso que se encuentra justo en frente de esta casa. Hay una especial oferta culinaria en el puerto y no puedes dejar de probarla: deliciosas aguas y helados de coco; crujientes kibis servidos con cebolla curtida (y chile si así lo deseas) que se volvieron populares en el estado con la llegada de migrantes libaneses en el siglo XIX; y tradicionales dulces de coco, pepita y caca-
huate al igual que merengues en todas sus presentaciones. Si el ecoturismo es lo tuyo, visita la Reserva Ecológica El Corchito. Aquí tendrás la oportunidad de ver manglares, ojos de agua y la flora y fauna de la costa. Otra excelente opción es la Ría de Progreso, en donde se realizan tours en kayaks dentro de los manglares, y podrás practicar SUP (stand up paddle), yoga o solamente pasear. Si te es posible, quédate hasta que se ponga el sol para observar desde el muelle como este desciende al mar y desaparece. Cómo llegar: Manejando desde Mérida es fácil, dirígete hacia el norte de la ciudad por la Calle 60 o Paseo de Montejo y sigue en línea recta hasta llegar a Progreso. El transporte público es proporcionado por Autoprogreso cada 10 minutos, comenzando desde las 5 am hasta las 10 pm, con un costo de $21 pesos de ida, o de $38 pesos de ida y vuelta, desde la terminal ubicada en la Calle 62 entre 65 y 67, Centro.
rogreso de Castro is Yucatán’s most important port and gets its name from Juan Miguel Castro, its first promoter. This city has also become an important tourism destination thanks to its many attractions: from natural reserves to restaurants and recreational activities. Its proximity to Mérida is what originally made Progreso gain importance. It was founded in 1871 because of the need to transport the Customs office from Sisal to a port closer to the Yucatecan capital due to the henequén commerce of the 19th century. This destination’s most important monuments include the Progreso lighthouse, which began operating in 1893; and the pier which is among the longest in the world. This construction was completed in 1947 and helped make Progreso an important commercial center. Today, the port is also a significant cruise ship destination. Across from the lighthouse you will find the market. Here, there are vendors who offer regional food, handcrafts,
seasonal fruit and vegetables, seafood, and more. Another attraction you can’t pass up is the “Malecón Internacional de Progreso” (the boardwalk). Here you will find many different restaurants serving fresh seafood specialties in their dining rooms, and under palapas on the beach, so that you can choose whichever you like best; you will also see many stores and stalls selling handcrafts. On the weekend, you’ll usually see “banana” rides and seaside massages being offered. Yucatecans also love to go to Progreso on Saturdays and Sundays; on these days you will see many of us looking to cool off with an ocean swim. Don’t forget to leave time in your itinerary to walk the “malecón” until you see the “Casa del Pastel” (you can’t miss it, it looks like a three layer cake!); afterwards take a photo next to the Progreso sign which is just across the street. There is a unique culinary offering at the beach and you can’t miss out. Try delicious coconut water and ice cream; crunchy “kibbi” served with pickled onion (and some chile, if you like it hot!) which became so popular with the arrival of Lebanese migrants in the 19th century; and traditional coconut, pumpkin seed, and peanut candies, as well as meringues in all shapes, colors, and sizes.
Boats, Progreso
How to get there: Driving from Mérida is very easy, just go north of Mérida on Calle 60 or Prolongación Montejo until you reach the town of Progreso. Public transportation is provided by Autoprogreso and operates every 10 minutes between 5 am and 10 pm, at a cost of $21 pesos one way, $38 pesos roundtrip, from their terminal on Calle 62 between 65 and 67, Centro.
If ecotourism is your thing, visit El Corchito Ecological Reserve. Here you will be able to see mangroves, springs, and the coastline’s plants and wildlife. Another great choice is going to the Ría de Progreso where you can take a kayak tour into the mangrove, try SUP (stand up paddle), do yoga, or just take the tour. If you can, stay until the sun goes down so that you can watch from the pier as it sinks into the water and disappears.

hicxulub Puerto is located 8 km east of the port of Progreso. It has approximately 5000 inhabitants whose main activities are fishing, trade, and tourism. The town is famous for being the epicenter of the crater of the same name, which was caused by the impact of a meteorite that collided with Earth about 65 million years ago. The beachfront is well developed with modern condominium complexes and houses. These beachfront properties are summer homes for Meridanos and are often available as vacation rentals. CHELEM Si estás en agosto por Chelem únete a la celebración de la patrona del puerto la Virgen de la Medalla Milagrosa. Una de las actividades de la festividad es la famosa procesión marítima, donde va la imagen acompañada de varias embarcaciones de la gente local. Toma un tour en barco para ver flamingos, aves y el ojo de agua. El viaje de una hora se contrata con los pescadores al sur de la plaza principal. elchac Puerto is about 20 minutes from Uaymitún and 30 minutes from Progreso, making it just far enough from those denser population areas to maintain a special, slow, laid-back feeling. There are a lot of useful services here including private beach homes for rent, stores that offer groceries, veggies and fruit, a bakery, several seafood restaurants, a small market, health clinic, tortilla store, gas station, hardware store, and fried-fish stands. There are no banks. There is a town plaza, a new pier, and a park with a children’s play area. There is a bus from Mérida: Autobuses del Noreste, Calle 67 at 50, Centro. Tel. (999) 924 6355. San Crisanto is a small fishing village located 50 km east of Progreso, and 10 km past Telchac Puerto. Most of the population, which does not exceed 600 inhabitants, makes a living by fishing and diving as well as conducting mangrove tours. However, the town does offer small restaurants and other services which are important to San Crisanto’s economy. They also produced extensive handcrafts and exchanged goods with the Maya cities in Campeche, Tabasco, Guatemala and Belize. The entry fee is $65 pesos.

n Yucatán no existen ríos, sólo formaciones llamadas rías, que son entradas de mar a la costa continental, formando canales con vegetación acuática llamados manglares. Declarada “Reserva de la Biosfera”, con 60,000 hectáreas, Río Lagartos se localiza a 2.5 horas de Mérida. Alberga la población más grande de flamingo americano en México, que construyen sus nidos durante la primavera y verano. Sus lagunas costeras son áreas de descanso temporal y territorio invernal para parvadas de aves migratorias y locales, con un record actual de 395 diferentes especies de aves en la zona.

Cómo llegar desde Mérida: en auto toma la carretera hacia Motul, sigue hacia Tizimín, después toma la desviación hacia Río Lagartos. En autobús puedes tomar diariamente el directo de Noreste a las 5:30 pm.

San Felipe está a 9 km al oeste de Río Lagartos. Es un pueblo pesquero muy pintoresco con casas de madera pintadas en colores vivos y contrastados. Es un puerto limpio con buenos restaurantes y un cómodo hotel: El Hotel San Felipe de Jesús. También salen viajes a la ría desde aquí. Es un lugar fantástico para admiradores de pájaros. El Cuyo es llamado “el tesoro escondido de la costa esmeralda de Yucatán”. Está situado en el Parque Nacional de Río Lagartos, un área protegida que incorpora una fascinante y única flora y fauna, una verdadera joya para los amantes de la paz y la tranquilidad. Para llegar a El Cuyo, deberás cruzar el camino sobre el cauce de Ría Lagartos, arriba de una laguna roja donde el color resulta de una alta concentración de sal. Esta laguna separa a El Cuyo de la tierra firme del resto de Yucatán. El faro que está construido sobre los restos de un sitio maya da la bienvenida al visitante.

El Cuyo is called “the hidden treasure of the emerald coast.” It is located in the Río Lagartos National Park, a protected area that incorporates a fascinating and unique flora and fauna, a real gem for lovers of peace and tranquility...away from telephones and computers. To get to El Cuyo, you must cross the road on the course of Ría Lagartos, above a lagoon where the color red is due to a high concentration of salt. This lagoon separates El Cuyo from the mainland of the rest of Yucatán. The lighthouse, built on the remains of an old Maya site, welcomes visitors.
