La Noche Blanca se prepara para la sexta edición de “La Noche BlanM érida ca”. Durante más de seis horas continuas el arte, la cultura

y los ciudadanos convivirán en una velada excepcional de arte a tope. Será el 21 de mayo, cuando la convivencia se viva de manera intensa entre meridanos y visitantes, artistas, galerías, museos, centros culturales, foros alternativos, parques y restaurantes ante un abanico de opciones para todas las edades. En sus ediciones anteriores “La Noche Blanca” enfocó su mirada a difundir emprendimientos creativos como la moda y la riqueza gastronómica. En esta sexta edición se busca que los visitantes conozcan la oferta que ofrecen las galerías, espacios con vocación que en los últimos años han mostrado gran movimiento e impulso a las artes plásticas en todas sus modalidades. También, el arte callejero ocupará diferentes esquinas del Centro Histórico en “Lunas” que permitirán acercar este tipo de expresiones a los ciudadanos. La gastronomía repetirá su presentación con Comidas sin Fronteras, el Mercadito Orgánico y la oferta de “food trucks” con su alta comida callejera. El Cementerio General de Mérida abrirá con proyecciones de cine, recorridos y un espectáculo de esculturas vivientes. En materia de movilidad también está contemplado un esquema que permitirá que los ciudadanos vivan el mayor número de experiencias culturales en una misa noche, de forma segura. El Centro Histórico de Mérida será el pretexto para la sana convivencia. La moda estará representada por las apuestas de los diseñadores mexicanos Macario Jiménez y Benito Santos. Además podrás disfrutar un espectáculo de títeres, un show regional, música barroca y clásica, trova yucateca, acrobacia y danza aérea durante las seis horas de actividades. Asimismo los ciudadanos también podrán capturar los mejores momentos de la velada y participar en el concurso fotográfico, o ser parte directa del staff apoyando como voluntarios. is getting ready for the sixth edition of “La Noche BlanM érida ca” (white night). During more than six continuous hours,

culture and people will join together in an exceptional evening of art in all its forms. The date is May 21, when everyone will be to-

gether: locals, visitors, artists, galleries, museums, cultural centers, alternative spaces, parks, and restaurants, with a wonderful variety of options for all ages. In previous editions of “La Noche Blanca,” the focus was on promoting creative micro-businesses in fashion and gastronomy. In this sixth edition the aim is for visitors see what art galleries have to offer: spaces where talent is on display, and where in recent years there has been tremendous growth in the visual arts. Street art will also be on view in different corners of the Centro Histórico, where you will find “moons” (wait and see!) that will allow you to get up close to this form of artistic expression. Gastronomy will be a big part of the event as always; with “Comidas sin Fronteras” (food without borders), the Mercadito Orgánico (organic market), and food trucks with high end street food. The main cemetery (Cementerio General) will be open with movie projections, tours, and a display of live sculptures. In terms of getting around, a plan is in the works that will allow participants to safely have the most cultural experiences possible in one night. Mérida’s Centro Histórico will be the setting for this healthy gathering. The world of fashion will be represented by Mexican designers Macario Jiménez and Benito Santos. There will also be a puppet show, regional entertainment, baroque and classical music, Yucatecan trova, acrobatics, and aerial dance during the six hours of activities. Participants will be able to capture the best moments of the evening and participate in the photographic contest, or get involved behind the scenes as part of the volunteer staff.

100 años · 100 Years Centro Estatal de Bellas Artes C

on motivo de la celebración de los 100 años de la creación de la Escuela de Bellas Artes, el Museo Fernando García Ponce-MACAY se une con la Secretaría de Educación, la Secretaría de la Cultura y las Artes, y el Instituto de Historia y Museos de Yucatán, para presentar la exposición colectiva: “El Ateneo Peninsular y la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Yucatán 1916-1940”. La muestra se centra en el papel de la Escuela de Bellas Artes en cuanto a la educación artística y su contexto histórico. Por lo cual se seleccionaron 150 obras de quienes enseñaron y/o estudiaron en dicha institución entre 1916 y 1940, tales como: Antonio Jané, Ariosto Evia, Ignacio Rubio Milán, José Dolores Aguilar, Francisco “Pancho” Vázquez, Miguel Rodríguez, Armando García Franchi, Raúl Gamboa Cantón, Aida Farah (única mujer en la exposición), Fernando Castro Pacheco, Aristeo Vázquez, Raúl Maldonado Cetina y Emilio Vera, entre otros. Las obras seleccionadas caracterizan la orientación que tenía la Escuela en el campo laboral, porque además de crear pinturas, grabados y esculturas, los primeros alumnos trabajaron en las artes gráficas, en publicidad, haciendo escenografías o como rotulistas, estos trabajos también se van a poder apreciar como las aportaciones fundamentales de Bellas Artes en sus primeras décadas, destacando el reconocimiento al paisaje humano y físico de Yucatán y, de la pervivencia de la cultura maya. Para la Fundación Cultural MACAY formar parte de esta histórica exposición tiene una doble importancia y significado. Por un lado, ser sede de esta magna muestra es un honor para el MACAY, al recibir la obra de los creadores yucatecos que han construido el panorama artístico de nuestra entidad; y, por otra parte, como el título de la exposición lo señala, hay un lazo histórico que hermana a nuestras instituciones, ya que bajo el gobierno del general Salvador Alvarado se fundó el Ateneo (1915) y la Escuela de Bellas Artes (1916). Además de pintura, escultura y grabado, la exposición reúne notas periodísticas, videos, fotografías, caricaturas y libros, cuyas portadas fueron diseñadas por estos primeros alumnos y maestros, lo que permitirá tener un panorama amplio de los cambios de orientación temática y la voluntad de transformación educativa y cultural de la época. La exposición estará vigente hasta el 30 de junio. Entrada libre.

o celebrate 100 years since the creation of the art school “Escuela de Bellas Artes,” the modern art museum Museo Fernando García Ponce-MACAY joins together with the Secretaría de Educación, the Secretaría de la Cultura y las Artes, and the Instituto de Historia y Museos de Yucatán, to show a collective exhibition: “El Ateneo Peninsular y la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Yucatán 19161940.” The exhibition centers on the role that the school played in artistic education and historical context. To this end, they selected 150 works of artists who taught and/or studied there between 1916 and 1940, including Antonio Jané, Ariosto Evia, Ignacio Rubio Milán, José Dolores Aguilar, Francisco “Pancho” Vázquez, Miguel Rodríguez, Armando García Franchi, Raúl Gamboa Cantón, Aida Farah (the only woman in the exhibit), Fernando Castro Pacheco, Aristeo Vázquez, Raúl Maldonado Cetina and Emilio Vera, among others. The selected works demonstrate the school’s orientation to the working world, because in addition to creating paintings, engravings, and sculptures, the first students worked in the graphic arts, advertising, stage set design, or in sign making; some of these works will also be on display, as fundamental to the way Bellas Artes worked in its earliest decades, recognizing the human and physical landscape of Yucatán as well as the prevalence of the Maya culture. Such was the contribution of the art community and the value the Escuela de Bellas Artes had during the era of the visionary governor of the state of Yucatán, General Salvador Alvarado, from February, 1915 to November, 1918. For the Fundación Cultural MACAY to be a part of this historical exhibition has a double importance and significance. On the one hand, to be the setting for this great exhibition is an honor for MACAY, to receive the works of Yucatecan artists who built the artistic panorama of this region; on the other hand, as the title of the exhibit implies, there is a historical link to the building, because under the governance of Salvador Alvarado the Ateneo was founded (in 1915) and the Escuela de Bellas Artes (in 1916). Besides painting, sculpture, and engraving, the exhibit displays newspaper articles, videos, photographs, caricatures, and books, whose covers were designed by these first students and teachers, offering a wide panorama of the educational and cultural transformations of the time. The exhibit is on display until June 30. Free entry.

Con más de 12 años de existencia y siete en esta ubicación, presenta en sus cuatro salas piezas de escultura, pintura o grabado que comunican una postura hacia un tema en particular. Tal es el caso de la exposición permanente de Joseph Kurhajec, escultor norteamericano que reside en Francia y por temporadas en Mérida. En 2015 realizó en esta ciudad las piezas que actualmente se exhiben en la colección “Inner Landscape”. Con materiales propios de la Península como maderas, fibras vegetales, piedras, cuernos, huesos, entre otros, presenta una postura reflexiva sobre la guerra, la violencia y la humanidad en esculturas con notoria inspiración prehispánica. Dioses, lagartos, calaveras y otras figuras no te dejan indiferente. Toma nota de los grabados con temática religiosa. Martin Lartigue, de origen francés, presenta “Figuras”, piezas llenas de colorido bajo una estética que reúne pintura y escultura en temáticas alegres. William Sievert sorprende con ¡pinturas en 3D! Al observarlas con lentes especiales, cambia totalmente el mensaje de estas obras. En otra sala se encuentran dibujos de Iván R. de León, co-fundador de la galería, así como de David Sierra, entre otros autores. UADY and ESAY students also offer seasonal exhibits of their works.

magínate un cielo lleno de estrellas, una noche fresca al pie de pirámides y edificios construidos por una cultura que hasta hoy nos sigue sorprendiendo. Todo esto puedes vivir en Chichén Itzá, Noches de Kukulkán, evento audiovisual que presenta la cosmogonía maya, su visión sobre el origen de la humanidad así como la historia de este lugar, maravilla del mundo. Déjate sorprender por un espectáculo que te dejará emocionado de principio a fin, ya sea realizando el recorrido nocturno, o bien observando las proyecciones sobre El Castillo dedicado al dios Kukulkán. Aquí te explicamos paso a paso como asistir. Evento gratuito. Lleva zapatos cómodos. Para público en general: 1. Acude al módulo de CULTUR ubicado en la explanada lateral del Centro de Convenciones Siglo XXI y solicita tu invitación presentando una identificación oficial, no importa si eres residente, visitante extranjero o nacional. Puedes solicitar hasta cinco invitaciones, por cada una pueden ingresar tres personas. 2. Entra a la página www.nochesdekukulkan.com y en el apartado “Reserva tu lugar” ingresa el folio completo de tu invitación, incluye letras y números; selecciona el día, de martes a domingo, así como el horario (disponible a las 8 pm) y regístrate. 3. Proporciona tu nombre, lugar de visita y señalar si entrarás con acompañantes. Ingresa también tu correo electrónico para recibir el número de confirmación. 4. Deberás imprimir el correo con el código de confirmación para canjear en las taquillas de la zona arqueológica por tus boletos de ingreso hasta una hora antes del evento. No olvides llevar tu invitación e identificación. 5. En la zona, ubica la fila para los que tienen boleto y sigue las indicaciones. Para huéspedes de hoteles participantes: 1. Pregunta en recepción si tu hotel es participante o checa el listado en la página www.nochesdekukulkan.com 2. Solicita las invitaciones que requieras. Algunos hoteles realizan hasta la impresión del código de confirmación que deberás canjear por boletos de ingreso en la zona. En caso contrario tendrás que realizar del paso 2 al 5 explicados anteriormente.

Con tu boleto realiza un recorrido nocturno de 45 min. antes de la proyección audiovisual, aunque no siempre está disponible por mantenimiento. Solicita diademas para escuchar en varios idiomas. Mira los edificios del juego de pelota, la Plataforma de Águilas y Jaguares, el Castillo, el Templo de los Guerreros y la Plaza de las Mil Columnas iluminados de noche. All this is yours to experience in Chichén Itzá, at Noches de Kukulkán, an audiovisual presentation that describes Maya cosmogony, their vision about the origin of the planet and of humanity, as well as the history of this place: wonder of the world. Let yourself be swept away by a show that will excite you from beginning to end, whether you take the night tour or watch the projections on the El Castillo pyramid, dedicated to the god Kukulkán. Here we explain step by step what you have to do to experience this event. Free event; wear comfortable shoes. For the general public: 1. Go to the CULTUR booth located on the side esplanade of the Centro de Convenciones Siglo XXI and ask for your invitation, presenting your official ID, no matter whether you are a resident, visiting foreigner, or Mexican national. You can request up to five invitations, each valid for three people. 2. Visit the site www.nochesdekukulkan.com and in the “Reserva tu lugar” section enter the complete folio of your invitation, including letters and numbers; and select the day, from Tuesday to Sunday, as well as the hour (8 pm) and register. 3. Provide your name, where you are visiting, and indicate if you will have companions. Enter your email address to receive the confirmation number. 4. Print the email with the confirmation code, which you will exchange at the archaeological site box office for your tickets, minimum one hour prior to the event. Don’t forget to bring the invitation and identification too. 5. Find your row number and follow the instructions. For guests of participating hotels: 1. Ask at Reception if your hotel is a participant, or check the list on www.nochesdekukulkan.com 2. Ask for the number of invitations you need. Some hotels will print the confirmation code for you that you need to exchange for your tickets at the site. If not, you will need to follow steps 2 – 5 above. ¿QUIÉNES SON LOS MAYAS? • WHO ARE THE MAYA?

ara los mayas, los árboles eran esenciales para la vida, sentían un profundo respeto por ellos y les atribuían cualidades religiosas y cosmológicas. Muchos continúan considerándose sagrados. Las leyendas y costumbres que giran alrededor de ellos perduran hasta hoy. Uno de los más importantes es la ceiba o yaxché, considerado el árbol sagrado de los mayas que simboliza la vida y la fertilidad. Se relaciona con los tres planos cósmicos: por su gran altura con el Cielo, su tronco y follaje con la Tierra, y sus profundas raíces con el Inframundo. La leyenda de la Xtabay, de la que hemos hablado en Yucatán Today, está vinculada a la ceiba. Aún puedes encontrarla en parques de Mérida, la reconocerás de inmediato por su majestuosidad. ¡Algunas tienen más de 100 años! ¿Sabías que los mayas acostumbraban producir y masticar chicle? Del chicozapote o árbol del chicle, rojizo y de gran altura, se utilizaba la resina para producir una goma que usaban los mayas desde tiempos ancestrales, otra aportación para el mundo. Debido a la explotación comercial para chicle y construcción, no es tan fácil encontrarlo.

Árboles Mayas Maya Trees El ramón es otro árbol utilizado por los mayas como fuente de alimento, sus frutos asemejan a bayas y tienen gran contenido de almidón que servía como harina. En la actualidad puedes encontrarlo comúnmente en parques y áreas verdes, por dar excelente sombra. Sus hojas preparadas en té pueden utilizarse para el asma y la bronquitis e incluso hay sustitutos de café ¡a base de ramón! Si te adentras en la selva maya, es necesario que conozcas la historia del chechén y el chacáh, un ejemplo de equilibrio que refleja el misticismo maya de coexistencia del bien y del mal. Ambos árboles eran usados por su dureza y también como medicamentos. Sin embargo, la resina del chechén es muy peligrosa, si te cae una gota en la piel te quemará inmediatamente. Pero no te preocupes, porque al lado siempre crece un chacáh que funciona como antídoto. Si visitas la Península, especialmente en mayo, notarás en casas, parques y avenidas un árbol con flores blancas, amarillas o rosadas; aquí se le conoce como flor de mayo. Según una leyenda maya, este árbol florece en ese mes en recuerdo de una niña cuyo padre pidió a las estrellas una hija, pero ésta falleció por designios divinos. En cambio, cada año brotan flores de dulce aroma. or the Maya, trees were essential for life, they had a profound respect for them, and they attributed religious and cosmological qualities to them. One of the most important trees is the ceiba, or yaxché, a sacred tree to the Maya, symbolizing life and fertility. They relate it to the three cosmic planes: its great height relates to the heavens, its trunk and foliage to the earth, and its deep roots to the underworld. The legend of Xtabay, which we have spoken of in Yucatán Today, is connected to the ceiba. You can still find this tree in parks all over Mérida; you’ll recognize it immediately for its majesty. Some are more than 100 years old!

Chechén y Chacáh • Chechén and Chacáh

Did you know the Maya were in the practice of producing and chewing gum? The resin of the chicozapote, or gum tree, a very tall reddish tree, was used to produce a type of rubber used by the Maya since ancient times, another contribution they made to the world. Due to its commercial exploitation for gum and wood, it is not easy to find any more. The ramón is another tree used by the Maya as a food source; its fruits are similar to berries, and have a high starch content, which served as flour. Today it is commonly found in parks, avenues, and green areas, and gives excellent shade. Its leaves prepared as a tea are helpful for asthma and bronchitis, and there are even coffee substitutes made from ramón! If you venture into the Maya forest, you have to know the story of the chechén and chacáh trees, an example of balance that reflects the Maya mysticism of the coexistence of good and evil. Both trees were used for their durability and also as medicines. However, the resin of the chechén is very dangerous, even a drop of it can burn your skin immediately. But don’t worry, because beside this tree there is always a chacáh, which serves as an antidote. If you visit the Peninsula, especially in May, you will notice in houses, parks and avenues a tree with white, light yellow, or pink flowers, (plumeria or frangipani), known here as “flor de mayo.” According to a Maya legend, the tree flowers in May in memory of a girl whose father asked the stars for a daughter, but she died due to a divine plan. In exchange, each year this tree produces colorful, sweet-smelling flowers.

ACERCA DE YUCATÁN • ABOUT YUCATÁN a península de Yucatán, es parte de la antigua región mesoamericana. La península está localizada al sureste de la República Mexicana y está conformada por el estado de Yucatán (al centro), Quintana Roo (al sureste) y Campeche (al suroeste).

La cultura maya es la que caracteriza a nuestro estado. Es conocida mundialmente por sus diversas aportaciones al mundo y ha perdurado hasta ahora con la influencia española que recibió. Los mayas construyeron varias ciudades, que ahora son reconocidos sitios arqueológicos y hasta el día de hoy perduran como un recuerdo arquitectónico de la identidad original de Yucatán. Es elemental que vayas a visitarlos, y explores sus rincones históricos y su cultura. El cultivo del henequén fue el “Oro Verde” de la península de Yucatán porque tuvo un gran auge en el siglo XIX. En 1880 convirtió los terrenos de la península en unos de los más ricos y codiciados. Sin embargo en el gobierno de Salvador Alvarado llegó a su fin por la expropiación estatal de las maquiladoras y la llegada del nylon que lo sustituyó.

Henequén (also known as sisal) became Yucatán’s “green gold” in the 19th C. By 1880, Yucatán’s wealth was legendary and envied by many. However, when Salvador Alvarado was governor, henequén production was taken over by the state. Combined with the invention of nylon, which took the place of sisal rope, the days of “green gold” came to an end. The Spanish made their presence known when in 1517 Don Francisco Hernández de Córdoba discovered the peninsula. Nine years later, in 1526, the conquest of Yucatán was formalized in a signed document, and Francisco de Montejo was named as its leader with the title “El Adelantado”.

Over time, the Maya people felt more and more invaded, and resentment grew about the racist ideologies implemented by the Spanish. They rebelled. The most important rebellion was the Caste War, which started in 1847 in Valladolid and lasted more than 50 years.

The Maya culture characterizes the state of Yucatán. It is known worldwide for its various contributions to the world and has endured up to this day, blended with the Spanish influence it has received.

With the passing of time, the union between these two cultures, combined with the beauty of our natural setting, have created a great variety of options for you. Aunque Mérida fue fundada en 1542, el Paseo de Montejo no llegó a existir sino hasta 1888. Fue construído para conmemorar la fundación de Mérida por Francisco de Montejo y León (puedes ver el monumento a los Montejo en el inicio de esta avenida, conocido como el Remate del Paseo de Montejo), y es sin duda la avenida más larga y más importante de nuestro estado. Gracias a la prosperidad que tuvo Yucatán en las últimas décadas de 1800, resultado de la enormemente lucrativa industria del henequén, muchos hermosos palacios y mansiones fueron construidos en esta espléndida avenida. Con la eventual desaparición de esta industria, muchas de las mansiones fueron abandonadas. El Patronato del Paseo de Montejo tiene la meta de revitalizar el patrimonio de esta hermosa avenida, desde su inicio en la Calle 49 hasta el Monumento a la Patria.

The best way to see the beautiful buildings on the Paseo is to walk. You could begin at the “Remate” of the Paseo, at Calle 49, and walk up to the Monumento a la Patria on one side of the street, and walk back on the other. The Turibus has a stop at the Museum of Anthropology at the corner of Calle 43. You will feel as if you have stepped back in time as you ponder the stories behind the glorious mansions. On Sundays don’t miss the Bici Ruta, when the street is closed to vehicles, and families enjoy a leisurely stroll or a bike ride (from 8 am to 12:30 pm). Also on Sundays, the International Art Corridor, from 9 am to 2 pm, where more than 50 artists display and sell their art on the sidewalk between Av. Colón and Calle 37.

La iglesia de Santa Lucía, construída en 1565, fue usada por los esclavos que traían de África y habitaban alrededor de ella. En el atrio de la iglesia estaba el primer cementerio de Mérida, para los españoles comunes (¡las tumbas no han sido removidas!).

Donde ahora están los arcos en el parque, se guardaban carretas y caballos. A principios del siglo XIX, el gobernador y alcalde en turno decidieron transformar este lugar porque la ciudad había crecido, y lo convirtieron en el Parque de Santa Lucía. Desde 1965 ha sido conocido por la Serenata todos los jueves a las 9 pm, con música y baile yucateco. Hay un mercado al aire libre

todos los domingos de 10 am a 3 pm, un evento muy popular. También los domingos la Calle 60 está cerrada por la Bici Ruta de 8 am a 12:30 pm. En 2012 la familia Gene, dueños de los portales, iniciaron una renovación del espacio abandonado junto a los arcos. Es así como surgió la zona comercial dentro del Parque de Santa Lucía en el 2013, con irresistibles tiendas y restaurantes. Centro Histórico, was a large virgin land on the outskirts of the city center. The church of Santa Lucía, built in 1565, was for the use of the slaves who had been brought from Africa and who lived in the surrounding area. The first cemetery of Mérida was in the atrium of the church, for the Spanish commoners (the tombs were not removed!). Horses and carts were kept where the arches of the park are now. At the beginning of the 19th century, the governor and mayor of the time decided to transform the area because the city had grown, and they converted it into Parque de Santa Lucía. Since 1965 it has been known for the Serenata every Thursday night at 9 pm, with Yucatecan music and dance. There is an open-air market every Sunday from 10 am-3 pm, another very popular event. Also on Sundays, Calle 60 is closed to traffic for the Bici Ruta from 8 am – 12:30 pm. In 2012 the Gene family, owners of the porticos, began a renovation of the abandoned space adjacent to the arches. In 2013 the commercial plaza in Parque de Santa Lucía was inaugurated, with irresistible stores and restaurants. El procesamiento de henequén tomaba lugar en la casa de máquinas. Había usualmente una capilla, una casa del mayordomo en donde vivía el capataz, y muchos otros edificios más pequeños para almacenamiento y habitaciones centrales. Cada hacienda tenía una escuela, una enfermería, una tienda, una iglesia, un cementerio, un área hidráulica, una prisión y los establos. Las haciendas de Yucatán tuvieron su clímax a principios de 1900, cuando la economía local tuvo un gran éxito debido a la fibra de henequén usada para hacer soga, cuerda y cordel. Las casonas en el Paseo de Montejo y Avenida Colón en Mérida son las casas que el “oro verde”, el henequén, ayudó a proveer. Después de la Guerra de Castas en Yucatán y la subsiguiente invención de fibras sintéticas, la mayoría de las haciendas fueron abandonadas, hasta la década de 1990, cuando muchas fueron restauradas a su gloria original. Un viaje a Yucatán estaría incompleto sin visitar las muchas haciendas del estado, a unos cuantos minutos manejando desde la ciudad de Mérida. Muchas de ellas han sido convertidas en hermo-

in México were the basis of H aciendas an economic system begun by the Spaniards in the 16th century, similar to the feudal system of Europe and the plantations of the southern US. They were efficient farming and manufacturing centers that produced meat, produce, and other products for export. The Yucatán haciendas enforced a social system of castes, based on race, with the Maya as slaves. Most Yucatecan haciendas in the 19th century produced rope from henequén, a variety of the agave cactus, which was exported for the booming shipping industry. The main house, or “Casa Principal” was usually the largest building, where the “hacendado” kept his living quarters and where most of the administration took place. Henequén processing took place in the machine house, or “Casa de Máquinas”. There

was usually a “capilla”, or chapel, a “casa del mayordomo”, where the jefe, or foreman, lived, and many other smaller buildings for storage and living quarters. Each hacienda had a school, infirmary, store, church, cemetery, hydraulics area, jail, and stables. The haciendas of Yucatán saw their heyday in the early 1900s when the local economy was booming due to the sisal fiber that was used to make rope, cord, and twine. The mansions on Paseo de Montejo and Avenida Colón in Mérida are the rich homes the “green gold”, henequén, helped provide. After the Yucatán Caste War and the subsequent invention of synthetic fibers, most haciendas were abandoned to decay in the jungles until the 1990s when many of them were brought back to their former state of glory. A trip to the Yucatán would be incomplete without visiting some of the many haciendas close to Mérida. Some haciendas in Yucatán have been renovated into beautiful five-star hotels, complete with elegant rooms, sumptuous dining facilities, swimming pools and magnificent grounds. Other haciendas are museums, providing a glimpse into former colonial times. Others are lived in by locals whose ancestors reclaimed them during the Mexican Revolution. And still others remain unrestored and open to the ravages of time.

PAPADZULES. Huevos duros picados dentro de una tortilla cubierta por una salsa de semilla de calabaza adornado con salsa de tomate.

BRAZO DE REINA. Este platillo yucateco es ideal para la época de vigilia en Cuaresma y Semana Santa, pues no contiene carne. Se mezclan hojas de chaya, masa de maíz, manteca, sal y huevos duros, esta mezcla se envuelve en hojas de plátano y se cuece. Se sirve cortando rebanadas y se adereza con una salsa a base de tomate, cebolla y pimienta, finalizando con el toque especial pepitas de calabaza tostadas molidas.

PESCADO A LA TIKINXIC. Una de las comidas del mar más tradicionales en Yucatán. Cochinita Pibil Se le pone recado yucateco, condimentándolo con achiote, los cuales le dan su característico color rojo y sabor. Se prepara a las brasas con leña, envuelto en hojas de plátano y algunas cáscaras de coco.

COCHINITA PIBIL. Este platillo icónico es la carne del puerco que se marina en achiote, jugo de naranja agria, ajo, comino, sal y pimienta. Todo se envuelve en hoja de plátano y se hornea, de preferencia en un “pib” debajo de la tierra.

FRIJOL CON PUERCO. La versión yucateca del puerco cocido en frijoles; servido con arroz y salsa de tomate y aderezado con rábano, cilantro y cebolla. Este platillo se come los lunes en muchos lugares yucatecos. HUEVOS MOTULEÑOS. Huevos estrellados fritos sobre una tostada cubierta de frijoles refritos; se adereza con salsa de tomate, jamón picado y chícharos, servido con algunas rebanadas de plátano macho frito. PANUCHOS Y SALBUTES. Tortillas de maíz pequeñas con pollo, lechuga, tomate y una rebanada pequeña de cebolla y aguacate . La única diferencia entre el panucho y el salbút es que el panucho lleva frijol dentro de la tortilla.

MUCBILPOLLO. Este platillo, similar a un tamal, tradicionalmente se cocina para la época del Hanal Pixan (Día de los Muertos); sin embargo, puede ser consumido todo el año, pues su delicioso sabor te dejará con ganas de más. Está compuesto por masa de maíz, pollo, puerco, manteca, tomate, cebolla, chile dulce, epazote, recado rojo, dientes de ajo, sal y caldo de pollo. Se envuelve en hoja de plátano en lugar de hoja de maíz, y se amarra con hilo de henequén. Igual como la cochinita pibil, es tradicionalmente horneado en un “pib”. POC-CHUC. Finas rebanadas de puerco marinadas en jugo de naranja agria, asadas, servidas con una salsa de tomate y cebolla morada picada. POLCANES. El “polcán” (cabeza de serpiente) recibe su nombre por su forma. Es un antojito yucateco hecho de masa de maíz y rellenos de cebollina, pepita de calabaza y frijol blanco. ¡Muy sabroso! POLLO PIBIL. mino, sal y pimienta; envueltas en hoja de plátano y horneadas en un “pib”. POTAJE. Este platillo es muy popular en Yucatán, tiene una mezcla entre origen español e indígena. Se prepara con carne de puerco, cebolla, plátano “macho”, tomate, papa, zanahoria, calabaza, chile X’catik, longaniza y lentejas. QUESO RELLENO. Le hace mérito a la variedad de quesos que hay en la península. Principalmente se prepara con queso de bola, relleno de carne molida de res y puerco y cocinado al horno. Se le adereza con especias y una salsa blanca hecha de harina, caldo de pollo y manteca y se adorna con salsa de tomate. RELLENO NEGRO. Este peculiar platillo recibe su característico color por el uso de condimentos. El relleno negro combina pavo, carne molida (“but”) y caldo. El “but” que es el alma de este platillo se prepara con tomate, pimienta, huevo picado, orégano, achiote, comino, epazote y recado negro y se crea una masa como albóndigas, se fríen ligeramente y se agregan al caldo y pavo para terminar su cocción. SOPA DE LIMA. Un delicioso caldo de pollo desmenuzado, tostadas y jugo de lima. ¡Exquisito!

COCHINITA PIBIL. This iconic dish is made from pork marinated in achiote paste, sour orange juice, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper. It is wrapped in banana leaves and baked in the oven, or better yet in an underground pit known as a “pib”. FRIJOL CON PUERCO. This is the Yucatecan version of pork cooked in beans. It is served with rice and tomato salsa, and dressed with radish, cilantro, and onion. Frijol con Puerco is usually served on Mondays in Yucatecan homes. HUEVOS MOTULEÑOS. A delicious breakfast! Fried eggs are served atop a tostada covered with refried beans, and dressed with tomato salsa, chopped ham, and peas. It can be served with slices of fried plantain.

MUCBILPOLLO. This dish, similar to a tamal, is traditionally prepared for “Hanal Pixan” (Day of the Dead); however, it can be eaten all year long, for its delicious taste will leave you wanting more. It is made of corn meal, chicken, pork, tomato, onion, sweet chile, epazote (a delicious local herb), red “recado” paste, cloves of garlic, salt, and chicken broth. It is wrapped in banana leaf instead of corn husk, and it is tied together with henequén thread. As with cochinita pibil, it is traditionally cooked in an underground “pib”. POC-CHUC. Thinly sliced pork marinated in sour orange juice, grilled, and served with tomato salsa and chopped purple onion. POLCANES. The “polcán” (serpent head) gets its name from its shape. It is a Yucatecan appetizer made from corn meal and stuffed with chives, pumpkin seed, and white beans. Delicious!

PANUCHOS AND SALBUTES. Corn tortillas topped with chicken, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and onion. The only difference between the two is that the panucho has refried beans inside the tortilla, and the salbút does not. PAPADZULES. Hard boiled eggs inside a tortilla covered by pumpkin seed sauce and tomato sauce.

POLLO PIBIL. Chicken pieces marinated in achiote paste, sour orange juice, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper; wrapped in banana leaves and baked in an underground “pib”. POTAJE. This dish is very popular in Yucatán, with a mix of Spanish and indigenous influence. It is a stew prepared with pork, onion, plantain, tomato, potato, carrot, squash, chile X’catik, longaniza sausage, and lentils. QUESO RELLENO. There is a great variety of cheeses in Yucatán, but the one that is used for this dish is the Edam-like “queso de bola”, stuffed with ground beef and pork and baked in the oven. It is delicately spiced and is served in a white sauce made of flour and chicken broth, and is finally topped with tomato sauce. RELLENO NEGRO. This unusual dish gets its black color from the spices it contains. Relleno negro combines turkey, ground meat (“but”), and broth. The “but” which is the soul of this dish is made with tomato, pepper, chopped egg, oregano, achiote, cumin, epazote, and black “recado” paste, made into a meatball-like dough, lightly fried, and to this the broth and the turkey are added while it finishes cooking.

BRAZO DE REINA. This Yucatecan dish is ideal for Lent and Semana Santa, for it contains no meat. A mixture of chaya leaves, corn meal, salt, onion, pepper and hard boiled eggs is baked in banana leaves. It is then sliced and topped with tomato sauce, and ground toasted pumpkin seeds.

PESCADO A LA TIKINXIC. A very traditional seafood dish in Yucatán. Yucatecan “recado”, a local paste mix of spices and achiote is added; this gives the dish its characteristic red color. It is wrapped in banana leaves and coconut shells, and grilled over charcoal.

CHICHÉN ITZÁ hichén Itzá fué la capital sobresaliente del área maya a finales del período Clásico e inicios del Posclásico. Estas famosas pirámides están localizadas a hora y media de Mérida. El nombre de Chichén Itzá se deriva de las palabras mayas “chi” -boca-, “chén” -pozo- e “itzá”, que era el nombre del pueblo de esta región. El sitio está dividido en tres áreas: el grupo norte (estilo Tolteca), el grupo central (del período Temprano) y el conocido como “viejo Chichén”. Las pirámides incluyen la ya famosa Pirámide de Kukulkán, El Templo de los Guerreros, El Juego de Pelota, Las Monjas y El Caracol, entre otros. El cenote sagrado es enorme y está abierto, como un pozo, y ahí encontraron cerámica, tela, oro, jade y esqueletos. No se puede nadar aquí.

No puedes conocer Yucatán sin visitar esta zona arqueológica. En el parador turístico hay baños, restaurantes, tiendas, servicio de paquetería y un mini museo. Afuera hay puestos con recuerdos y regalos de todos

Templo de los Guerreros • Warriors Temple

This site is divided into three areas: the north group, distinctly Toltec; the central group, early period; and the area known as the Old Chichén. All three can be seen comfortably in one day. The pyramids at Chichén Itzá include the Kukulkán pyramid, the Temple of the Warriors, the Grand Ball Court, The Nunnery, and The Observatory, to name a few. The huge well-like Sacred Cenote is north of the Kukulkán pyramid, where ceramics, fabric, gold, jade, and skeletons have been found. This cenote is not open for swimming. No visit to Yucatán would be complete without seeing this famous archaeological site! At the outside of the main entrance you will find stalls selling souvenirs and gifts. Inside the main entrance you will find luggage storage, restaurants, more shops, bathrooms, and a health station. Since 2006, climbing the pyramids is not permitted.

DZIBILCHALTÚN • DZIBILCHALTÚN el “Lugar Donde hay EsD zibilchaltún, critura sobre Piedras Planas”, es una

gran ciudad maya considerada de las más antiguas y se encuentra a 16 km al noreste de Mérida. Una vez en este lugar, no te pierdas la oportunidad de visitar el Museo del Pueblo Maya. Admira la casa típica maya y camina por el camino ecológico lleno de árboles, propios de la región, con indicaciones que te llevarán a las pirámides. Sobresale el famoso Templo de las Siete Muñecas, que debe su nombre a que se encontraron 7 figurillas de barro en el santuario. Es aquí donde cada 21 de marzo y 22 de septiembre se celebra el equinoccio, cuando el sol brilla a través del templo. Acompañan a este importante templo otros que han sido reconstruidos o están en dicho proceso. Observa la capilla abierta de estilo colonial que data de 1600.

Después diríjete al cenote Xlakáh, cuyo nombre significa pueblo antiguo, que está a nivel del suelo, para tomar un refrescante baño en sus cristalinas aguas.

Templo de las 7 muñecas • Seven Dolls Temple

Then follow the ecological path flanked by trees from the region, identified with their names. This will take you to the Templo de las Siete Muñecas. It was named for the seven small sculptures excavated here and now residing in the onsite museum. This temple is situated so that every year, on the 21st of March and 22nd of September, the spring and fall equinoxes, the sun shines directly through the doorway as it rises. Many other temples on the grounds have also been rebuilt and restored. Dzibilchaltún is a great place to wander, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, climb some of the structures and imagine what life must have been like there hundreds of years ago. Last but not least, head for the Xlakáh cenote for a refreshing swim. This cenote is open to the public until 3:30 pm. It tends to get a little busy on weekends. One end of the cenote is very shallow, while the other is over 140 feet deep and continues on into a tunnel.

HOW TO GET THERE: by car take the Mérida-Progreso highway and at the 12th kilometer you will see the sign to turn to Dzibilchaltún. Drive about four kilometers and it will be to your right as you pass the little town. By bus: it leaves from the “combi” bus stop on Calle 58 between 59 and 57, Centro. Puuc significa “serranía”, y los sitios incluyen Uxmal, Kabáh, Sayil, Xlapak, Labná, las grutas de Loltún, haciendas (Yaxcopoil, Ochil restaurante/museo, Temozón boutique hotel/restaurante), cenotes, pueblos y ciudades mayas (Ticul, Oxkutzcab). Para hacer este recorrido, puedes rentar un automóvil y seguir nuestro mapa o tomar un tour con una agencia de viajes. Hay autobuses a Uxmal saliendo de la terminal ubicada en la Calle 69 por 68 y 70, tel. (999) 924 0830 ext. 2909. O puedes pasar la noche en Oxkutzcab (Hotel Puuc) o en Ticul (Hotel Plaza).

Para recorrer el circuito, te recomendamos comenzar el día temprano por las grutas UXMAL

de Loltún. Sigue los anuncios al sur hacia Uxmal. En Muna, sigue a la izquierda y sigue los anuncios a Loltún. Así llegarás por la mañana para tomar un tour guiado (única forma de entrar a las grutas). Entrada $80 pesos nacionales y $108 pesos extranjeros. La próxima parada (14 km) es Labná (“Casa Vieja”). Habitada entre los años 750 y 1000 d.C. por unas 1,500-2,500 personas, hoy en día son cuatro los edificios restaurados y tienen muchos montículos alrededor. El palacio tiene unos 70 “chultunes” (cisternas de agua). También verás el Arco de Labná, el centro de la ciudad y la entrada al “sacbé” (camino blanco). Entrada $43 pesos. A 4 kilómetros sobre la misma carretera, se encuentra Xlapak (“Paredes Viejas”). Aquí hay 14 montículos con tres pirámides. Este sitio es uno de los menos “arreglados” y re-

construidos, lo que da una idea de cómo los encontraron los primeros exploradores. Entrada gratuita. Sayil (“Lugar de las Hormigas Arrieras”) está a 5 kilómetros. En la entrada hay un museo al aire libre. Sayil data de los años 800-1,000 d.C. En su apogeo, el Palacio tenía 90 recámaras donde vivían unas 350 personas. Desde el segundo nivel, atrás, se puede ver la Iglesia de Santa Elena y también un pequeño templo llamado Nueve Máscaras, a un costado de la sierra. Entrada $43 pesos. Continuando nuestro paseo, la próxima parada es Kabáh (“El señor de la Mano Fuerte y Poderosa”). Para llegar, toma la carretera a la derecha a unos 5 km de Sayil. Kabáh es famoso por el edificio Codz Pop, con la representación del Dios Chaac (de la lluvia) en 250 mascarones tallados en piedra. También hay dos grandes figuras en la parte anterior del edificio. Entrada $43 pesos.

La última parada en el circuito y la más restaurada es Uxmal, también conocida como “La Tres Veces Construida”. Aquí verás la Pirámide del Adivino, el Palacio del Gobernador y el Cuadrángulo de las Monjas, entre otros. Hay un parador turístico con tiendas, restaurantes, y baños. Entrada $206 pesos extranjeros y $145 pesos nacionales.

No te pierdas la oportunidad de visitar Choco-Story (museo del chocolate) frente al sitio arqueológico de Uxmal, donde podrás probar una bebida de cacao natural y conocer su proceso de elaboración. IMPORTANTE: Todos los sitios están abiertos los 365 días al año, de 8 am a 5 pm. Subir la Pirámide del Adivino en Uxmal está prohibido. Next on the winding road you will come to Xlapak which means “unglued walls”, a site of some 14 mounds and three somewhat restored pyramids. This site and Sayil are less restored and manicured, so you can see what the sites looked like when they were discovered. Notice the many carved stones just lying around on the ground. Free entrance. Five kilometers from this turn is Sayil, which means “the place of the ants.” At the entrance you will see an outdoor museum under a thatched roof. Check out the huge stellae dating from 800-1000 AD. which is called “the nine masks”. There are restrooms here. Entrance $43 pesos. Your next stop will be Kabáh. You will have to turn right five km. out of Sayil at the “T” in the road. Kabáh is famous for its incredibly ornate Codz Pop building, with its representation of Chaac, the Maya rain god, in 250 masks. Also take a look at the two large figures on the back of this building. Entrance $43 pesos. Just a few km. down the road is Uxmal. The most “manicured” of the sites and last stop in this route, Uxmal means “the thrice built city” with the colossal “Pirámide del Adivino”, impressive “Palacio del Gobernador”, intricate “Palomar” and “Cuadrángulo de las Monjas”. Uxmal has a tourist center with shops, restaurants and bathrooms. Entrance $206 pesos for foreigners and $145 pesos for Mexicans. Don’t miss the chance to visit Choco-Story (chocolate museum) across from the archaeological site of Uxmal, where you can travel back in time to an era of splendor in a Maya pueblo setting. You will also be able to taste a natural cacao beverage. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: All sites are open 365 days a year, from 8 am to 5 pm. Climbing to the top of the Pirámide del Adivino in Uxmal is no longer allowed. Light and sound show at Uxmal is at 7 pm every night during fall and winter and 8 pm during spring and summer.

The next stop will bring you to Labná, once a city of some 1,500 to 2,500 people, inhabited between 750 and 1000 AD. Presently, four buildings are in a restored state. Notice the caretaker’s open thatched roof home as you enter the site. The large palace is well restored and houses 70 “chultunes” (water cisterns) that are, unfortunately, not visible. Also here is the much-photographed arch that is thought to be the center of the city and the entrance to the “sacbé” (white road or Maya highway) that went to Uxmal. The caretaker’s wife sells plants if you are interested! Entrance $43 pesos.

he Puuc Route, or Ruta Puuc, is an interesting and obligatory trip when you come to Yucatán. Just 80 km south of Mérida, this is a do-able day trip. On this route there are Maya sites (Uxmal, Kabáh, Sayil, X-Lapak, Labná), the caves of Loltún, haciendas (Yaxcopoil, Ochil restaurant/ museum, Temozón boutique hotel/restaurant), cenotes, Maya villages, and larger Maya city/towns (Ticul, Oxkutzcab).

RUTA DE LOS CONVENTOS que nunca, La Ruta de M áslosinteresante Conventos es una aventura intri-

gante en la cual tendrás un día entero de emociones. Esta singular ruta te llevará a conocer el corazón de Yucatán, sus pueblos y sitios arqueológicos mayas, conventos, iglesias, catedrales, templos coloniales, atrios y cenotes. La mejor manera de recorrer la ruta es en automóvil. Partiendo de Mérida temprano (8 am) con un tanque lleno de gasolina, toma el Periférico hacia el oriente rumbo a Kanasín. Después sigue los letreros a Acancéh. Cada visita durará de 10 a 45 minutos. A 22 km de Kanasín se encuentra Acancéh, donde verás una combinación interesante del pasado y presente. Su principal atractivo es la Plaza de las Tres Culturas, que conjuga las épocas prehispánica, colonial y contemporánea. Destaca el templo dedicado a nuestra Señora de la Natividad y la capilla de la Virgen de Guadalupe. A unas cuadras está el Templo de los Estucos, donde verás jeroglíficos. Para llegar pregunta y te indicarán el camino, está a unas cuatro cuadras. Entrada: $36 pesos.

¡Dónde ir y cómo!

Tecóh, a unos 8 kilómetros de distancia, tiene un mercado, una iglesia y un convento dedicado a la Virgen de la Asunción. Construida sobre la base de una pirámide maya, la iglesia tiene piedra labrada, un altar impresionante y muchas pinturas. Visita Hacienda Sotuta de Peón, construida a finales del siglo XIX; es una de las pocas haciendas henequeneras que existe en plena producción y en la que la historia se encuentra viva.

A continuación se encuentra Telchaquillo, un pueblo pequeño que tiene una iglesia muy austera y un cenote cristalino en la plaza, con una escalinata para bajar. Unos kilómetros después, a mano derecha, está la fantástica zona arqueológica de Mayapán. Amurallada y con 4,000 montículos, esta ciudad se parece mucho a Chichén Itzá en tamaño e importancia. Es considerada como la última gran capital maya. Entrada: $36 pesos.

El siguiente poblado es Tekit (30 km), un pueblo próspero donde encontrarás la parroquia de San Antonio de Padua, un templo grande lleno de estatuas de santos en todos sus nichos. Parece un museo y el altar es muy sencillo pero hermoso. El siguiente pueblo es uno pequeño de nombre Mama (7 km). Conocido por la iglesia coronada con un campanario, la parte posterior del templo cuenta con un hermoso jardín, una noria y santos en cada nicho. El altar está muy adornado. Se cree que esta iglesia es la más antigua de la ruta. Admira su templo y ex convento franciscano que presentan al frente un hermoso campanario, casi como un atrio cerrado, el cual es uno de los más famosos en la región.

Continuando a 9 km en la ruta está Chumayel (“Lugar de las Semillas”), cuna de uno de los más importantes documentos, el Chilam Balam, libro sagrado de los mayas. En este poblado puedes apreciar el Templo de la Purísima Concepción, construido en el siglo XVI. Es un claro ejemplo de la arquitectura religiosa de tipo almenado, medieval, trasplantada a Yucatán por los primeros españoles. En el interior del templo se encuentra un Cristo de madera negra, de interés muy especial. Teabo (a 6 km) es conocido por dos representativas construcciones sacras: la Parroquia y el ex convento de San Pedro y San Pablo, construidos durante el siglo XVII. El último y tal vez más importante punto de la Ruta de los Conventos es Maní (12 km), donde encontrarás una enorme iglesia, un convento y un museo con explicaciones en español, inglés, francés y maya. Ve el Templo del Convento de San Miguel Arcángel, cuya fundación data de 1549. Es aquí donde Fray Diego de Landa ordenó la quema y destrucción de muchos documentos y estatuas mayas durante el movimiento franciscano para convertir a los indígenas al cristianismo. Se destruyeron unos 5,000 ídolos, 13 altares, 27 pergaminos en piel de venado y 197 vasijas de diferentes formas y tamaños. Al darse cuenta de su gran error, Fray Diego comenzó a escribir todo lo que podía recordar. Este documento se llama Relación de las Cosas de Yucatán. Hoy, Maní es un sitio religioso de mucha importancia. Si estás en Yucatán en Semana Santa, no pierdas la oportunidad de ir. Ticul, Maní y Oxkutzcab ofrecen rica comida yucateca en el restaurante Príncipe Tutul Xiu. Ticul es buena opción para pasar la noche si quieres hacer la Ruta Puuc al día siguiente. Tiene hoteles pequeños y limpios y está de camino a las Grutas de Loltún. El Hotel Na’Lu’um, ubicado en la carretera Mérida-Chetumal, Libramiento Tecóh, es una opción para hospedarte. Para regresar a Mérida, sigue a Ticul, después a Muna, Umán y Mérida.

CONVENT ROUTE enticing than ever, The Convent M ore Route is a day trip that will take you somewhat off the beaten path and into the heart of Yucatán. Meandering through the countryside of the west-central part of the state, you will visit Maya villages and archaeological sites, colonial churches, cathedrals and convents, courtyards and cenotes, all dating back centuries. The best way to do this route is by car. Gas up before leaving (one full tank will more than suffice). You should try to be on the road by 8 am. Start on the “Periférico” and go to Route 18 towards Kanasín. Follow the signs to Acancéh and on from there. The amount of time spent at each stop will vary from 10 to 45 minutes.

Tecóh, 8 km down the road, has a market and a very ornate church and convent dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption. The carved stones and altar of the church, built upon the base of a very large Maya pyramid, along with the statues and paintings, are impressive. Visit Hacienda Sotuta de Peón, one of the few henequén haciendas which is still in full production; the history is “live”.

Next on the route is Telchaquillo, a small village that has a small, austere chapel and a wonderful cenote in the plaza that you can visit. Stairs have been carved for your convenience. Several kilometers out of Telchaquillo off to the right you will find the fantastic Maya pyramids of Mayapán. This walled city has 4,000 mounds. Mayapán is the size of Chichén Itzá, and an equally important city. Mayapán is considered the last great Maya capital. Entry: $36 pesos. Continue on 30 km to Tekit, a large prosperous-looking village. There you will find the parish of “San Antonio De Padua”, with a large temple that houses many ornate statues of saints in their individual niches. The altar itself is very simple but beautiful. The next small village, Mama, is a little over 7 km away. Mama is famous for its large beautiful bell-globed church containing a large garden, a well, and a closed atrium along with frescos on the wall, statues of saints in the niches, and a very ornate altar. It is believed this is the oldest church on the route. The temple and ex-Franciscan convent show the beautiful bell tower, irresistible to admire, as well as a closed atrium, which is the most famous of the region. Following the route for six more miles, you will next come to Chumayel (Place of the Seeds) where the famous document “Chilam Balam” was found, sacred book of the Maya. Here you can see the Templo de la Purísima Concepción built in the XVI century. This is a clear example of the medieval religious architecture brought to Yucatán

by the first Spaniards. In the interior is the black wooden Christ, especially interesting. Teabo (6 km) is known for its two sacred buildings: the Parish and the Ex Convento de San Pedro y San Pablo, built during the XVII century. The interior boasts an altarpiece with a pair of caryatid columns and the Capilla de Indios from 1617. This area is also known for its embroidered dresses and hipiles. The final and perhaps most important stop on the Convent Route is Maní, where you will find a large church, convent and museum with explanations in English, Spanish, French and Maya. See Convento de San Miguel Arcángel, dating from 1549. This is the place where Fray Diego de Landa ordered the burning and destruction of many Maya statues and documents during the Franciscan movement to convert the indigenous peoples to Christianity. They destroyed 5000 idols, 13 altars, 27 deerskin parchments, and 197 vessels of varying shapes and sizes. Upon realizing his great error, Fray Diego began to write down everything he could recall. 22 km from Kanasín is Acancéh, where you will see an interesting combination of past and present. The main attraction is the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, which joins the pre-Hispanic, colonial, and modern eras. Note the temple dedicated to our Lady of the Nativity and the chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Several blocks away are more remains of Maya pyramids with hieroglyphs. Ask around for the Templo de los Estucos, about four blocks away. Entry: $36 pesos.

Hotel Na’Lu’um, on the Mérida-Chetumal highway near the Tecoh exit, has unique accommodation. To get back to Mérida, head to Ticul, then Muna, then to Umán, then on to Mérida.

Izamal was conquered by the Spaniards, and it was the monks in their eagerness to convert the indigenous Maya to Catholicism that gave the city its religious distinction. To this day, Izamal’s people are very devoted to the Immaculate Virgin. An important sight in Izamal is the Franciscan Convent San Antonio de Padua that was built from and over one of the Maya pyramids. This convent is also famous for the story of the monk Fray Diego de Landa, its founder, who burned all the Maya scripts, and then feeling remorse for what he had done, tried to write all he could remember of the ways of the Maya in the “Relación de Cosas de Yucatán.” Pope John Paul II visited Izamal in 1993 and

held a special meeting and Mass specifically for the indigenous people of the area. This has been one of Izamal’s claims to fame ever since. Note the beautifully restored altarpiece, the stained-glass window of St. Francis of Asissi, and the many statues along the walls. The second floor is where the statue of Our Lady of Izamal, Queen and Patron Saint of Yucatán, is housed. Note all the gold-leaf paint, crystal chandeliers, flowers and elegantly painted walls. A small church store with postcards and religious souvenirs is on the first floor. Izamal is a jewel of a colonial city, with just about all the buildings painted an egg-yolk yellow, making the entire town look like a movie set. Cobblestone streets and colonial lamp posts complete the scenery. There are Maya pyramids (Kinich Kakmo, the most important, Kabul, Itzamatul and El Conejo), colonial-style buildings, parks and plazas, and lots of people for people watching. Los Mayas les dieron el nombre de Dzonot, que los españoles pronunciaron cenote. CENOTES DE X’KEKÉN Y SAMULÁ Localizado en Dzitnup, a 5 km al suroeste de Valladolid, estos cenotes están dentro de una cámara subterránea. El agua es poco profunda y es tan limpia y clara que se observan los peces.

CENOTE XLACAH Ubicado en la zona arqueológica de Dzibilchaltún, es el más cercano a la ciudad de Mérida. Es un cenote abierto, excelente lugar para nadar después de visitar el sitio arqueológico.

CENOTILLO Este pueblo debe su nombre a la gran cantidad de cenotes que existen tanto en el poblado como en sus alrededores. Según la gente local, existen más de 150 de ellos. Los principales son Kaipech, Xayín, Xoch, Yook Chac y Ucil.

CENOTE YOKDZONOT Ubicado a tan sólo 10 minutos de Chichén Itzá, nadar en este cenote es una experiencia mágica, con los pequeños peces alrededor de ti, los pájaros en los árboles entonando sus canciones, los “tulixes” (libelulas) volando sobre la superficie del agua fresca y limpia.

On the Yucatán Peninsula there are over 6,000 cenotes, with only 2,400 actually studied and registered. The Maya called them “dzonot,” which the conquering Spaniards translated as cenote. Cenotes are magical, enigmatic and unique in the world, and are the only resource for fresh, sweet water in the local Yucatecan jungle. ituada a la mitad del camino entre Mérida y Cancún, Valladolid, “Pueblo Mágico” de México, es una pintoresca ciudad colonial con barrios de gran majestuosidad y belleza. Ha sido conocida desde 1823 como “La Sultana del Oriente”, título merecido tanto por la belleza arquitectónica de sus edificaciones coloniales, tales como el Convento de San Bernardino de Siena, el Palacio Municipal, la Iglesia de San Servacio y el Museo de San Roque, entre otros; como también por la herencia arquitectónica del siglo XIX y principios del XX: el Ex Telar de la Aurora, el Parque Central Francisco Cantón de Rosado y la Estación de Ferrocarriles. Valladolid fue fundada por Don Francisco de Montejo “El Sobrino” en 1543 y adquirió la categoría de ciudad en 1823. Valladolid es el lugar donde sucedieron dos grandes pasajes de la historia de México: la Guerra de Castas en 1847, y la primera chispa de la Revolución Mexicana en 1910, misma que celebran cada año el 4 de junio con diferentes festejos deportivos y culturales.

Desde su origen, tiene la estructura de las ciudades españolas en Yucatán, con trazo en retícula o damero, con amplias calles y su gran plaza de armas (hoy Parque Francisco Cantón). Está dividido en el centro y sus barrios; todo el conjunto conforma actualmente su Centro Histórico, que incluye los siguientes lugares: Palacio Municipal, Casa de la Cultura, Casa de Los Portales, Iglesia de San Servacio, el bazar municipal, el Centro Artesanal, el Museo de San Roque y el Parque de los Héroes. Los edificios coloniales pintados en colores pastel añaden un toque especial. Hay siete barrios, cada uno con su iglesia que debes visitar. El más impresionante es el Convento de San Bernardino en el barrio de Sisal, donde es muy llamativo su arte, retablos, nichos

VALLADOLID / EK BALAM y esculturas con motivos vegetales (algo no usual), por lo que aquí comienza una de las primeras obras científicas mexicanas: El Catálogo Botánico. Hay dos cenotes muy importantes e impresionantes, Zací que está a unas cuadras de la plaza, y Dzitnup, a 5 km del pueblo, en donde puedes nadar. Visita el Museo de San Roque, que con sus diferentes salas, que van desde arqueología y antropología hasta botánica, te darán una gran idea de esta zona, desde los mayas hasta hoy en día. También sobre la misma calle se encuentran la Catedral y el Palacio de Gobierno con sus enormes murales de historia mexicana, la Iglesia de San Servacio, el Mesón del Marqués, y los templos de la Candelaria, San Juan de Dios y Santa Lucía. Aquí, verás que la mayoría de la gente todavía viste con la ropa típica de Yucatán, algo que no se ve tanto en Mérida y casi nunca en Cancún. Recomendamos visitar Dutzi Design, excelente diseño de bolsas, productos de calidad con los que ayudan a los yucatecos de escasos recursos. Frente a la plaza principal, hay un edificio donde puedes encontrar un grupo de señoras mayas que venden sus trabajos de punto de cruz e hilo deshilachado en vestidos, blusas, pañuelos, y fustanes. No dejes de visitar el Bazar Municipal de Artesanías en la Calle 39 con 40 y el Mercado de Artesanías en Calle 39 con 44. Para la comida, ésta es la ciudad perfecta de la exquisita cocina yucateca. Valladolid es creadora de guisos muy famosos como los lomitos de Valladolid, longaniza y pollo en escabeche. Puedes almorzar en el Restaurante Las Campanas, justo en la plaza. días. Para hospedarse hay lugares de todos precios y gustos. Una visita obligada es la Casa de los Venados, una casa museo privada con una colección de arte popular y contemporáneo mexicano. Los tours (en inglés y español) se dan casi todos los días a las 10 am, pero se recomienda reservar. Está en la Calle 40 #204 por 41. A los participantes del recorrido se les pide que hagan un donativo de mínimo $80 pesos para beneficio de asociaciones de caridad locales. Tel. (985) 856 2289. Visita el sitio arqueológico de Ek Balam, a sólo 20 minutos al norte de Valladolid. Ek Balam es un nombre en lengua maya que se traduce al español como “jaguar oscuro o negro”. Fundada en el año 100 a.C., alcanzó su esplendor en el período Clásico Tardío entre el año 600 y 1000 d.C. Abarca un área de 12 km² de asentamiento continuo, tiene 45 estructuras, está rodeada de dos murallas concéntricas de piedra, existe también una tercera muralla que une algunos de los edificios principales, tiene un juego de pelota, una importante red de caminos, estelas y otros monumentos. Los antiguos pobladores se abastecían de agua en los escasos cenotes del área, y en los “chultunes” (depósitos subterráneos artificiales). Las estructuras presentan varios estilos arquitectónicos, es decir, influencias del Puuc, de la costa oriental en Campeche, pero hay detalles que las hacen únicas, se habla de imágenes con alas semejantes a los ángeles. Los edificios principales están distribuidos en dos plazas. La Acrópolis, es una de las construcciones más voluminosas de Mesoamérica. Aquí verás esculturas, máscaras, figuras y jeroglíficos. Abre diario de 8 am - 5 pm. La entrada cuesta $185 pesos para los extranjeros y $126 pesos para los nacionales. CÓMO LLEGAR: Para llegar a Valladolid desde Mérida, toma la carretera de cuota Mérida-Cancún por $149 pesos. ocated halfway (two hours from each) between Mérida and Cancún, Valladolid, “Pueblo Mágico” of México, is a bustling Maya city with a special colonial flavor. This is where you will see the majority of the townspeople still using the typical dress of the Maya, and the buildings around the main plaza painted pastel colors. You will surely get a sense of the laid-back pace of life. Valladolid is known as “The Sultan of the East,” a title given for the architectural beauty of its colonial buildings such as the Convento de San Bernardino de Siena, the Palacio Municipal, the Iglesia de San Servacio, and the Museo de San Roque, among others; as well as for its architectural inheritance of the XIX and early XX centuries; the Ex Telar de la Aurora, the Parque Central Francisco Cantón de Rosado, and the train station. Valladolid was founded by Don Francisco de Montejo “The Nephew” in 1543 and acquired the category of city in 1823. Valladolid is the setting of two of Mexico’s most significant events: the Caste War in 1847 and the “first spark” of the Mexican Revolution in 1910. From the beginning, Valladolid has had the structure of the Spanish establishments in Yucatán, with a checkerboard design, wide streets, and its great main plaza, today known as Parque Francisco Cantón. It is divided into the city center and its neighborhoods; the whole together is known as the Centro Histórico. There is a building across from the plaza where you will find a group of Maya wom-

And while in Valladolid, you are in the heart of good Yucatecan cooking country. Try the flavorful cuisine of Valladolid in such dishes as “lomitos de Valladolid”, “longaniza”, and “pavo en escabeche”. Longaniza de Valladolid is a sausage that is made locally. Try it with scrambled eggs or grilled and wrapped in a tortilla. Both ways are delicious! You can eat at Restaurant Las Campanas located right on the main plaza, for excellent Yucatecan food. Hotels are quite reasonable in Valladolid making it a good place to use as a base for going to Chichén Itzá 45 km away and the Balankanché Caves 35 km away (entry $70 pesos; $5 pesos for children.) Consider staying for two nights so you can really get a feel for the place. Valladolid also has very important cenotes, such as Dzitnup, about 5 kilometers west and Zaci, a few blocks from the main plaza. There is an English library, Valladolid English Library, on Calle 49 at 40. Don’t miss a chance to have a tour of Casa de los Venados (House of the Deer), a private home-museum of Mexican folk and contemporary art. Also visit the impressive Ek Balam archaeological site 20 minutes north of Valladolid on the road to Tizimín. The pyramids here are bigger than the ones at Chichén Itzá. Ek Balam is a name in Yucatecan Maya that can be literally translated as “black or dark jaguar.“ Founded in the year 100 BC, it was probably one of the most powerful Prehispanic Maya cities economically, religiously, and socially speaking. It reached the height of its power during the Late Classical period of 600–1000 AD. This important city covered some 12 square kilometers. Containing 45 structures, the site is surrounded by two stone walls; there is also a third wall between some of the principal buildings. You will also find a ball court, an important series of roads, stelae and other monuments, including the original wells they built, called “chultunes.“ The structures show various architectural styles and influences. These include Puuc influence, from the western coast of Campeche. There are also some details, such as winged idols resembling angels, that are unique to this site. The main buildings are divided into two plaza areas. The Acropolis is one of the most voluminous structures in Mesoamerica. Here you will see statues, masks, figurines and hieroglyphs. Open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Cost is $185 pesos foreigners, $126 pesos Mexican nationals. HOW TO GET THERE: To get to Valladolid from Mérida, take the cuota road toward Cancún, the cost is $149 pesos. Or you can drive on the free road and go through several interesting Maya villages. If you want to take public transportation, ADO has departures all day. Price $176 or $155 pesos one way. There are also colectivos departing from Calle 52 between 63 and 61.

GRUTAS DE LOLTÚN Su nombre proviene de los vocablos mayas “Lol” y “Tún”, que significan respectivamente flor y piedra. Estas grutas localizadas a 100 km al suroeste de Mérida en el municipio de Oxkutzcab, son de las más grandes de la Península de Yucatán y las que más se han estudiado. En ellas se han encontrado evidencias de asentamientos humanos de hasta 7000 años de antigüedad. La gruta ha sido acondicionada para paseos turísticos por medio de senderos con iluminación. El recorrido es de aproximadamente mil metros, en donde se han encontrado osamentas de mamut, bisonte, felino y venado. Otro atractivo importante son las pinturas rupestres, manos en negativos, rostros, animales y grecas, así como figuras decorativas e inscripciones. Al final del recorrido se encuentra una majestuosa bóveda desplomada. La gruta cuenta con servicio de guía y no está incluído en el costo de la entrada, recomendamos dejar propina. Solo se puede entrar en grupos guiados. Horario: 9:30 am, 11:00 am, 12:30 pm, 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm y 4:00 pm. Todos los días.

GRUTAS DE CALCEHTOK También conocidas como X-Pukil, y junto con las de Loltún, son sin duda de las más grandes de la Península de Yucatán. Tienen un sistema muy complejo de túneles en su interior, por lo que es preciso contratar un guía. El nombre se deriva de los vocablos mayas “cal” (cuello), “ceh” (venado) y “tok” (pedernal). En toda la caverna hay abundante material prehispánico. En las excavaciones se han hallado huesos de venado y de otros animales; cerámica, martillo de cuarcita, puntas de flecha, cuchillos de obsidiana, esculturas en piedras, entierros humanos y haltunes (estructuras de piedra para contener agua). Hay varias cuevas principales donde puedes ver formaciones naturales con impresionante semejanza a objetos, animales y rostros. Alrededor de Calcehtok existe un complejo de más de 30 grutas, de las que se sospecha que están comunicadas. GRUTAS DE TZABNAH Se encuentran a 40 km al sureste de Mérida en el poblado de Tecóh. Su nombre significa en maya “palacio del rey”. Hay estalacti-

Los paseos pueden realizarse a cualquier hora del día, ya que siempre hay un encargado en el lugar. GRUTAS DE BALANKANCHÉ Localizada a 6 km de Chichén Itzá, es una caverna que fungió como centro ceremonial de los antiguos pobladores mayas. Hay espectáculo de luz y sonido, en el cual se relata la historia de las grutas. Puedes admirar estalactitas y otras formaciones de roca. A 200 metros de la entrada se encuentra el Trono de Balam, que es una especie de altar donde los mayas celebraban algún tipo de ceremonia y al centro de sala de siete metros de altura, se alza un gran pilar formado por la fusión de una estalactita con una estalagmita, asemejando una gran ceiba, llamada “la ceiba sagrada que crece en el interior de la tierra”. En el lugar fueron encontrados objetos ceremoniales de gran valor arqueológico, pueden ser admirados en el mismo sitio de su hallazgo.

he Yucatán Peninsula is a porous limestone shelf that boasts no aboveground rivers or lakes. What we do have are underground rivers, lakes, sinkholes and caves that snake through the limestone. The caves of the Yucatán were sacred places for the Maya and are quite impressive. When visiting the caves, it is important to ALWAYS enter with a guide. LOLTÚN CAVES This name is derived from two Maya words, “Lol“ and “Tún,“ that mean “flower“ and “stone.“ Located in the hilly Puuc region, 100 kilometers from Mérida in Oxkutzcab, these are the largest caves on the Peninsula. They are also the ones that have been studied the most. Findings of ceramics gives evidence of human contact here going back 7,000 years. The one-kilometer route through the caves has been set up to make the going easy. Mamut bones have been found along with frescoes paintings on the walls, “hands in negative,“ faces, animals, geckos and decorative figurines. At the end of the route is a majestic open dome. These caves have a rather complicated series of tunnels, making it obligatory to use a guide. The name is derived from the Maya words “cal” (neck), “ceh” (deer) and “tok” (stone). Within the caves are a great number of pre-hispanic findings, such as intact plates, quartz hammers, arrow tips, stone sculptures, obsidian knives, human burial sites and “haltunes“ — stone-type receptacles for water collection. Within the chambers you will see natural formations that resemble different objects such as water walls, elephants, faces, animals, etc. Around the Calcehtok area are some 30 other caves, and it is suspected that they connect. TZABNAH CAVES Located 40 kilometers south of Mérida in the village of Tecóh. The name in Maya means “the king’s palace.“ There are stalactites, stalagmites, columns, deep crevices and 13 cenotes within. On the route through the caves is a huge chamber known as the Cathedral Cupula that oddly enough resembles the Cathedral of Mérida. Legend has it that a Maya prince and the princess that he kidnapped escaped to these caves and were lost. You can visit at any hour of the day, as there is always someone available to guide you. BALANKANCHÉ CAVES Located six kilometers from Chichén Itzá, these caves were an important ceremonial site for the Maya. A light and sound show that relates the history of these caverns has been incorporated into the caves. There are impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations within. Two hundred meters from the entrance is the Balam Throne, a type of altar where it is believed the Maya celebrated some type of ceremony. In the same chamber is a seven-meter-tall grand stalagmite formation that resembles a ceiba tree, the sacred tree of the Maya. It is said to be the “sacred tree inside the earth.“ Many ceremonial objects can be seen at the outdoor museum by the entrance.

Pasando la plaza principal se encuentra la iglesia dedicada a San Juan Bautista, patrono de la ciudad. De estilo colonial sobrio, su fachada posee grandes columnas, un arco labrado en piedra y puertas de madera. Recorre los pasillos del patio interior y el segundo piso de este templo que guarda algunas semejanzas con la Catedral San Ildefonso de Mérida.

En la plaza principal puedes tomar una mototaxi y pedirle que te lleve al cenote Sambulá, un atractivo ubicado a unas 10 cuadras. Abierto todos los días de 8 am a 5 pm, la entrada cuesta $5 pesos, cuenta con baños en la parte exterior y estacionamiento. El cenote está dentro de una gruta, desciendes por una escalera a un salón, ahí puedes dejar tus pertenencias. El agua es cristalina y su profundidad varia de 1 m a 8 m. Recomendable para nadar y practicar espeleobuceo. Se rentan chalecos salvavidas. Puedes extender tu viaje 27 km más para llegar Telchac Puerto, que se caracteriza por tener aguas tranquilas, hospitalidad y restaurantes de mariscos. Histórica, pintoresca y de fácil acceso. ¡Motul, un atractivo por visitar!

Wander the interior patio passageways and the second floor of this church, which holds some resemblance to the San Ildefonso cathedral in Mérida.

This is the main courtship area for greater pink flamingos during fall and winter. The boat excursion includes a visit to the fresh water springs Valdiosera and Venecia where the water is sweet, transparent and ideal for swimming. You will also visit the petrified forest Tampetén, a strange place where you will see just the trunks of these trees with their roots in the water. Lookout tower $37 pesos for Mexican nationals and $65 pesos for foreigners. TRANSPORTATION BY CAR: Take the Periférico exit between Jacinto Canek and Umán, continue on to Tetíz, Kinchil and then Celestún. There are signs along the way, and you can use the map on page 21. Celestún is not only famous for its seafood restaurants, but also for its ría, beautiful flamingo colonies, fresh water springs, calm beaches and salt fields. The main attraction in Celestún is to hire a boat to go to the ría to see the flamingos. There are boats located at the entrance to Celestún and another group on the beach by the La Palapa Restaurant and also at Restaurante La Sirena. Please don’t get too close to the flamingos. These pink beauties need to eat about 12 hours a day. If you scare them and make them fly, they lose important energy. They can also break their necks or wings if they are frightened into flight. Tour prices up to 6 passengers: 1 hour $1,200 pesos and 2 hours $1,500 pesos.

Sisal. No se puede llegar desde Progreso o Celestún. No hay un camino costero que una estas tres localidades, lo que aumenta el aislamiento del pueblo, pero también lo protege del crecimiento que se ve en otras playas de la costa. En realidad, es desde la conquista el primer puerto de la Península, ya que por ahí se exportaba el henequén. Actualmente, su actividad principal es la pesca. It was the port from which all the henequén fiber known as sisal was exported to the world. Presently the main activity is fishing. The beach is very calm, there are almost no waves to worry about, and the sea goes from a Caribbean turquoise to a darker green hue.

The main difference between Sisal and its more popular neighboring beach towns is the very fact of its isolation. Paradoxically it was one of the first and more important ports during the Colonial period.

There are a few inns and hotels. There are also beachfront lots and homes for sale. There are several restaurants where one can enjoy succulent Yucatecan cooking and fresh seafood. The place is perfect for a bike ride, beach stroll or fishing, scuba and snorkel expeditions.

n its role as the hub of Yucatán’s coastal communities, Progreso is something of a paradox. Its laid-back ambience is still appealing most of the year; many North Americans and Europeans who want to escape their chilly winters are attracted to Progreso as a place to live part-time or full-time. They like the fact that there are restaurants, hardware stores, supermarkets, and a good hospital; all essential services are there. And of course they are only a half hour drive from Mérida and all its nearby attractions. Others, however, don’t want to live in the “hustle-bustle” of this port city of 54,000 inhabitants…they prefer the smaller towns of Chelem or Telchac Puerto, or the spacious beaches of San Benito or San Bruno, and use Progreso as a place to shop or dine.

ital of Mérida. In 1856, federal permission was granted to erect the new town. In 1871 it was officially founded, and in 1875 given the category of “city”. In 1936 a Danish company began construction of the pier, which was completed in 1947. In 1989 nearby Yucalpetén was inaugurated as the Puerto de Abrigo (shelter port), which has full marina facilities today, and the following year the Remote Terminal was inaugurated with its 6.5 km. viaduct. All of this helped to establish Progreso as a major international shipping port for both import and export; Línea Peninsular has been operating cargo service since 1984, and its current schedule goes between Progreso and Panama City, Florida, four times a week. Progreso’s docking facilities and proximity to Mérida and the Mundo Maya has put it on the itineraries of many cruise ships as well. And the 2009 and 2012 trans-atlantic sailing races “Solidaire du Chocolate”, from France to Progreso, introduced the port to a new international audience. The residents of Mérida also love Progreso. At Easter and in the summer months, Progreso is anything but laid-back… thousands of Meridanos flock to their homes away from home and swim, eat, drink, and dance. Before and after those busy times Progreso reverts to its other personality, peaceful but just busy enough to suit most visitors, and the homes owned by the Mérida residents are available for rent. Cuatro décadas después, el puerto cercano de Yucalpetén fue inaugurado como puerto de abrigo, y finalmente, un año después se inauguró la terminal remota con su viaducto de 6.5 km. Toda esta infraestructura convirtió a la ciudad de Progreso en un importante centro para el intercambio comercial internacional. Línea Penínsular opera desde 1984 y en la actualidad ofrece servicios de carga marítima cuatro veces a la semana entre Progreso y Panama City, Florida.

Many of the restaurants on the seaside promenade, the “malecón”, have tables on the sand and will serve you there. What could be better than freshly grilled fish and a cold beer under a swaying palm tree…heavenly!

HOW TO GET THERE: driving from Mérida is easy, just go north on Calle 60 or Paseo de Montejo until you reach Progreso. Public transportation is provided by Autoprogreso and operates every 10 minutes between 5 am and 10 pm, at a cost of $19 pesos one way, $35 pesos roundtrip, from their terminal on Calle 62 between 65 and 67, Centro.

lub Puerto cuenta con aproximadamente 5,000 habitantes que se dedican principalmente a la pesca, el comercio y el turismo.

Chicxulub Puerto es famoso por ser el epicentro del cráter del mismo nombre, causado por el impacto de un meteorito que chocó con la Tierra hace unos 65 millones de años. Chicxulub ha sido durante mucho tiempo el puerto favorito de los turistas (tanto locales como extranjeros), ya que tiene una amplia extensión de playa con gran variedad de especies marinas y aves que pueden contemplarse desde las primeras horas de la mañana.

¡Dónde ir y cómo!

La playa cuenta con modernos complejos de condominios y casas veraniegas para los meridanos y disponibles para renta en vacaciones. Ten en cuenta que durante la Pascua (Semana Santa) y los meses de julio y agosto, estas casas suelen ser utilizadas por sus propietarios, por lo tanto, no cuentan con amplia disponibilidad para renta.

his coastal town is located 8 km east of the port of Progreso, and 65 km north-northeast of the city of Mérida. It has about 5000 inhabitants whose main activities are fishing, trade, and tourism. Chicxulub Puerto is famous for being the epicenter of the crater of the same name, which was caused by the impact of a meteorite that collided with Earth about 65 million years ago. This port has long been a favorite of vacationers (both local and foreigners) as it has a wide stretch of beach where a variety of marine species and birds can be seen, from the early morning hours. The beachfront is well developed with modern condominium complexes and houses. These beachfront properties are summer homes for Meridanos and are often available as vacation rentals. Keep in mind that during Easter (Semana Santa) and the months of July and August, the homes are used by their owners and generally not available for rent.

Here is a short list of some of the activities you can do while here: beachcombing, which is especially good in the winter months, bird-watching, exploring, cycling, fishing, horseback riding, jet-skiing, sailing, sightseeing, swimming, walking, water skiing and wind and kite surfing. There are services available in Chicxulub, including small supermarkets, restaurants, and pharmacies, a “mercado” for fresh fruits and vegetables, and bakeries to buy your fresh baguettes. There are no banks.

San Crisanto is a small fishing village located 50 km east of Progreso, and 10 km past Telchac Puerto. Most of the population, which does not exceed 600 inhabitants, makes a living by fishing and diving as well as conducting mangrove tours. They also live from the production of coconut and its desserts, coconut ice cream, and sale of large coconut trees. San Crisanto is known as the coconut nursery of the state. X‘Cambó se ubica a un costado de la carretera que lleva a Progreso y Dzilam de Bravo. Su significado es “lugar de cangrejos o cocodrilos”. Está situado a 6 km de Telchac Puerto y a 2 km de la costa, casi sobre la carretera Progreso a Telchac. Hay pirámides mayas, una capilla católica y un ojo de agua. Las evidencias más antiguas son del Preclásico Superior (150 a.C. - 300 d.C.). Según teorías arqueológicas este sitio fue el principal proveedor salinero teniendo a su cargo diversas ciudades mayas como son Izamal, Oxkintok y Ah Kim Pech. También se dedicaban a la producción artesanal realizando intercambios comerciales con las antiguas ciudades mayas en Campeche, Tabasco, Guatemala y Belice. Llama la atención la similitud de sus edificios con los de Izamal, lo cual ha dado origen a la teoría de que los izamaleños utilizaban este sitio como puerta de salida al mar. También cuenta con 10 “ojos de agua” naturales. El 30 de mayo de cada año se festeja a la Virgen María. Algunos dicen que se aparece en la iglesia al poniente de la plaza principal de X’Cambó. La fiesta en honor a la Virgen es muy típica y colorida. Entrada: $57 pesos.

Its beaches welcome visitors who are looking for peace and quiet. However, the town does offer small restaurants and other services which are important to San Crisanto’s economy. San Crisanto has nearly 850 hectares of mangroves inhabited by around 137 species of animals. Among the fauna there are examples of woodpeckers, white and black herons, and anteaters. In 2010, the United Nations recognized the villagers for their efforts to combat poverty through the conservation of San Crisanto’s biodiversity. To get to X’Cambó, take the Progreso–Dzilam de Bravo road. At about km 36 you will see the the “X’Cambó” sign to go south for about 2 km. Translated from Yucatecan Maya to English, it means the place of the crabs or crocodiles. This is a rather large site that has been somewhat restored. Six kilometers from Telchac Puerto and two kilometers from the coast, X’Cambó is a curious combination of Maya pyramids, a Catholic chapel and a small, freshwater spring. The oldest evidence of occupancy is from 150 BC to 300 AD. According to archaeological theories, X’Cambó was an important city and provider of salt to the Maya cities of Izamal, Oxkintok and Ah Kim Pech. They also produced extensive handcrafts and exchanged goods with the Maya cities in Campeche, Tabasco, Guatemala and Belize. There is a marked similarity between the buildings in X’Cambó and those inland in Izamal, making archaeologists believe the Izamal Maya used this site as a port. In the area there are no cenotes but about 10 natural springs. On May 30 the locals honor the Virgin Mary. Some say she appears in the church near the largest pyramid. These festivities are very typical and colorful events. Entry: $57 pesos.

There are a lot of useful services here including private beach homes for rent, stores that offer groceries, veggies and fruit, a bakery, several seafood restaurants, a small market, health clinic, tortilla store, gas station, hardware store, and fried-fish stands. El Cuyo is called the hidden treasure of the emerald coast.
