ARCHITECTURE 101

YUCONG LIN FALL 2015

• Week 1: What’s your sign • Week 2: What’s yours sign redux • Week 3: A journey of discover to local place of wonder • Week 4: Make a wall, a windows evoke wonder • Week 5: Make a wall, a windows evoke wonder redux • Week 6: Make a place that evokes wonder • Week 7: A spatial journey leading to a place of wonder • Week 8: Enhancing the evoked experiences within a spatial journey leading to a place of wonder

WHAT’S YOUR SIGN COLLAGE? I use three kind of words to describe my personal sign--smart, creative and sad. The bulb represents creative. The head is smart and the dark color is sad. I combine three things to an object. I use the head as a background, bulb and dark color put into the head to create my sign.

A journey of discover to local place of wonder • Major objectives: • Enhance spatial sensitivities • Develop a visual story that describes a journey of diverse spatial space • Identify specifics of experiential space • Using gesture drawing &collage as expressive tools evoke intended spatial experiences of wonder

In this project, we are required to choose our photos that we took on a experienced trip to create a collage sign. To evoke our emotion to combine the photos that we choose is a hard thing for me. This is because I have no idea to create how the new collage look like.

I try to cut different shape of the photos and put the brightness of the photos on right side. Then the dark of the photos on the left side.

MAKE A WALL AND WINDOW TO EVOKE WONDER • The challenges is to apple & relate principles, approaches, and techniques introduced into an integrated design process of thinking and making that satisfy the program

A wall and a window

A wall and windows

I create a wall and windows can be evoke wonder to protect people. This is because a thick wall make people safe enough. To avoid rain, wind and sunshine. I use three chipboard to stick together. And I create a grid windows on the top right corner. Cut three different size squares on the middle of the wall.

A place of wonder • In this time, I am required to make a wall, a full notions of floor and roof • To write a draft of the narrative to develop the model • Storyboard that describes the journey • design iteration at a selected scale • Continue to mend the place model

A place of wonder Strengths are when lights comes in from the "scratches" it creates very special glow. And the curves created a gentle flow through out a journey. Weakness the curve flow is not leading anywhere there are no openings at the end of the flow. So the journey ends where the curve ends and the person will be stuck at the corner.

A place of wonder

In this time, I change the straight wall to a curved wall. This is because I want to make more dynamic and connect the right and left wall. I also create a tunnel for a entrance.

Final Project Bridging Gaps Arch 101-MW Section

Group Project: Jeremy Chin - Project Manager Chad Wright - Design Director Bookkeeper Yucong Lin Lin- Photographer

Project Requirements • “Stratified Wonder: experiencing the transience of beauty, the unexpected, the unfamiliar, and the inexplicable” In this time, students were required to be a group to do the final project. Our group create and design a big model at outside of the courtyard. Each design that a member of a group to create individual model should evoke “Stratified Wonder”

Individual design • For this time, I want to use triangles to build a design. This is because I know triangles are very stable. Before I get this a little idea, I watched the TV show that one people show how to play a Rubik’s Cube. I found the squares constitute a object. This is why I want to use triangle to design a model.

Triangles models

I try to combine three equilateral triangle to be a model and then glue those models together. Finally my design is created. And my the basic concept Order in chaos... simple to complex .

Final Model After my group figure out the final model , I give a suggestion is to build two different style stairs on both side this is because they represent a connection with different people and different experiences. As my job is to use wood to build the final model. I scale the measure of the model and the size is žâ€™ = 1 foot

Tools Exercise • For this time, I learn some materials and tools. Such as LBrackets, Rectangular, Wood Screws, Deck Screws. I know electric saw that is to cut wood. I also learn how to use deck screw and drill press. I think to use these tools is a good experience and practice for me.

Photographer

• As a group member, I am required to be a photographer. I need to take some photos when my group members are working. Now I am going to show some pictures.

During the final project, I realize time and budget is very important and necessary. We have about 4 weeks to build the design. Therefore we need to manage time and each member should do different work or do quickly. Another thing is budget, when we buy some materials, we have to choose different brand that’s price is cheaper.

• All in all, this final project was a good exercise and experience for me. I learned how to be effective. I think it was important for me to what I can did or not, and how to play on strength each person. • I also think teamwork is most important. Work together we can create a perfect design this is because we can collect different and innovational ideas from each member. Member can inspire other person to get a new idea.

• In this semester, the most important thing for me is to I can learn different idea and concept from each classmate. I obtain a lot of amazing idea and perfect concept from them. Their designs also inspire me and provide some new idea to me. I really appreciate them. • I also thank for my professor, because he always help me to create each assignment step by step. He give me the opportunity to grow and mature to be a good designer.
