Hong Kong is a city in China, which contains thousand years of history. It is well known for fishing and salt production in its early age, and was a part of the British Empire in the 1841, mainly use for trading; which Hong Kong had now developed to become a World Financial centre. I believe that it is important to preserve these history heritage in the city, which place such as museum could keep these objects safety, and also present them to the world. Instead of the places which had already been used for building, there are still free land that could be use. Kai Tak is a developing place in Hong Kong, which contains a new Cruise Terminal, completed at 1st June 2013. Since then, tourist who came from the Asia-Pacific, uses the terminal to travel from their country to Hong Kong. However, there are not much travel attractions around the Cruise Terminal. This means that the tourist who wants to visit, would need to travel to sites that are far away, while they might be very tired after the cruise trip.

There for, I had decided to design a museum which is located near the Kai Tak terminal; this will allow the tourist to have a new site to visit, either when they had just arrive, or when they are waiting for their cruise. Also due to the convenience use of transport, even the local audiences can visit the museum. Parts of the rooms will also be suitable for gallery use, which allows young artists to exhibit their art work to the audiences. While designing the building, there are a range of rules which I would need to follow. Firstly, the use of glass will need to be strong enough to be protect from the damage of wind and sea wave, as it is located near the wharf. The height of the building should not be too high, as it could block the view of the audiences from the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. On the other hand, due to the wide area of free land, it is possible to design a building that looks broad.

The design of the museum should be convenient for both the audiences and staffs to use. I think that there should different entrances located at different directions – this will allow both the tourist from the cruise terminal and the locals to enter the building easily. In order to transfer the historical relic into the museum, I think that there should be large entrances on the side of the building for staff use, so that they can be sent inside no matter what size they are in. Due to the reason which it is near the sea, it allows the use of shipping delivery, which goods and relics from other country could be send to the museum easily. Since it is important for the building to be eco-friendly, I am going to include landscape that contains plants around the building. I will research on the ways to apply grass and mini parks at the place, so that they are suitable for the selected location. There should be flat paths from the outside to the building’s entrance, as it is more comfortable for the audiences to walk on. The location near the Cruise Terminal contains a large area of land, there will need to be enough toilets and food supply inside the building. The free spaces at each room and hall will need to be wide enough, due to the amount of audiences who would visit the place.

In order to collect inspirations which would help me while designing, I had decided to research and see how layering can form interesting structures. I took a set of primary photographs about the roof design at Lok Fu Plaza, and found out that the gapes and shades of the layers changes while looking at a different direction. I am going to research on other spaces that contains a similar structure, which will help to develop my ideas. Also, the way how lines are intersect to each other is another element that I would want to apply in my building design, which is why I had photographed these different ways of crossing lines together. I am going to combine these two themes in my project to create my museum.

Plan drawing of the Exhibition Centre

Since the layout and arrangement of space in a museum is different to normal houses, I decide to went to this exhibition centre and gather information. Inside the place, I found a model that shows how the building is structured and formed in different layers. This shows me how the spaces of the exhibition centre are arranged in, including the location of the multipurpose halls and all the routes that can be use. The model also shows the emergency exits and stair ways where the visitors can use in urgent situation. I believe that this will be needed in my museum design, and the amount of exits will need to be enough for the audiences who visit the place.

The different layers of the building relates to my theme, which I am going to try using a similar way to form my model design. I will need to think about the quantity of levels which my museum needs, so that it can include a suitable amount of customers at the same time. These inspiration of layers also makes me to think about if there are other ways to use layers, for example on the walls or inside the interior space.

After looking at how different layers could form a building design, I then took photos about the structure and patterns which are located in the interior space. I found that most of the forms inside the exhibition centre are created by intersection lines, the form which are mainly used are the cross lines that forms the rood top and the columns which holds the building – these creates a large range of triangle patterns with accuracy. The other form of intersection lines which are used are located around the building, holding and separating the pieces of glasses. This makes it easier to change the glass if they had been damage by wind and sea waves.

In order to find out how the exterior of a museum could look like, I visit the Chengdu Museum located at Sichuan, China. The size of the museum is around 65,000 square meters, mainly for the exhibition of Chengdu’s historical relics. This design contains a contemporary style, while the use of golden colors are related to the relics from Jinsha Site and Sanxingdui Site. This reflects the building to the location’s history.

While looking at the design of Chengdu Museum, I recognize that its exterior is formed by different layers of structure and shapes. The use of triangles and cross lines are the main sources, applied on both the walls and glass. The uneven surface creates shadows to the side, which changes when looking at the building from a different direction.

The use of two colors on the walls suggests gold and jade, which are products that represent the Chinese History. In my design, I will research about the color representations, so that the use of color scheme is going to be suitable to my chosen location.

The arrange of lines and shapes around the surface of the Chengdu museum, inspirited me to recreate a selections of buildings. These are designs that uses a similar use of metallic materials, but contains more amount of glass for sunlight. The patterns of intersect lines had been apply to the layout of glasses, while the use of shapes had been use to cover the other walls.

This museum was design by Zaha Hadid, which is located at East Lansing, USA. It is formed by a large amount of circulatory and visual connection, which makes the view of the building to change at different direction. The museum is made with stainless steel, pleated concrete and glass exterior, which its structure is clearly shown to the outside. Light is allowed to be pass through from the gaps, which makes the interior space to be bright at day time.

The interior of the building is also interesting due to the use of oblique walls, which separates the spaces with views that changes when walking. Most of the functions including stairs and coat room had contains a use of angular design. The use of white wall color juxtapose to the exterior, which the shadows of structure adds moveable pattern to the space.

Plan drawing of the museum

These are the forms of the building which I had record by using marker pens. The use of different colors separates the parts of the building, while showing the shades and shadows between its complicated structure. I am specially interested at the use of oblique walls and stairs, as it shows a strong visual impact to the viewer. The lines that extends from the building to the outside floor, had combined the environment with the building.

In order to understand the detail of plans, and the differences between types of buildings, I had drawn a selection of plan developments based on existing architectures. These shows me the way how the interior space can be use to fit their building purpose, including the furniture layout and free spaces across the page.

I had also drawn a section drawing of the Nanjing Museum, since it contains a interesting structure, suggesting how a building could be balance with just enough amount of support. This shows me how I could try and create models with new techniques.

These are some primary photos of durians, which I decide to change the intersection lines between its surface into possible designs for my museum. I specially like the shades and shadows between the thorns, since they will change by the direction of light.

Transforming the thorns to forms for building

Ideas for glass structure

This is a design of the museum, which I had create by using the forms and lines from the durians. I enlarged the parts into different spaces, so that it is suitable for a large amount of audience to stay in. The use of thorns works well for attracting others to come, since most buildings in Hong Kong are flat and rounded. The height of the building is around 4 levels, which fits the height control from my brief. Inside the design, stainless steel are the main material, which will be able to protect the relics and customers from extreme weather. On the other hand, glass will be use in order for day light to pass in to the interior space. The possible types which I will choose are either laminated glass or tempered glass.

Plan view of the Taikoo Li Entrance

I designed this museum by looking at the forms of lines from the Taikoo Li entrance. I think that the use of sharp shapes are useful to form a structure, covered with glass pieces. The layers of glass could form special spaces in the museum in order for presenting the relics. However, I will need to think about the height of the roofs for each floor, in order to make sire that they are suitable for the audiences to use. This means that I might have to adjust the size in my development.

After designing the idea from a 2D drawing, I decide to create a model that follows a similar shape. This makes me think more about the design in other views. I decide to use black card to build this model since it makes the surface to feel heavy. The shadows which are created between the layers work well, since it changes from the angle of sight. This model follows the main ideas from my drawing, including the use of triangle shapes and complicated layers. The height of this museum is around 5 levels, which the top floor is the smallest. However, since the museum should contain big and wide spaces, the size scale of the actual building might need to be a lot more bigger. This means that I should consider the use of spaces from the exterior view, while I develop the design. This could be by improve by having external parts that enlarge the space of the building.

I had look at a design of existing building, which contains a flat and horizontal building style. This provides me a wide space to redesign both the interior and exterior. As a museum and gallery, I believe that it is important to have certain environment that contains a high level of roof, this allows the space to be suitable for large exhibitions, since there are special relics such as ships and machines which are from the Hong Kong history. It is also important to separate the different rooms with thick walls and doors, as the customers would not want to visit a museum that has a noisy environment.

Elevation drawing of the redesign building

This is a section drawing which I had created by redesigning the interior space, the main idea of this design is base on the use of separated spaces, which represent the different use of museum area. This include sculptures, painting, large scale exhibition, restaurant, toilet and staff areas. I like the process of this hand drawing since it contains accurate walls and furniture, which are in scale to the person and trees.

Sectional drawing of the redesign building

After creating elevation and section drawings of buildings, I have more understanding on how a building is formed with different parts. There for, I had start to draw out different sections which could be combine into a building. The sources which I collect from my research had strongly inspire me while doing this development, and the use of different parts had changes the form of how the details of the building will look like. I had also apply a glass shield on the side of the building, which can protect the museum from its water surrounding.

Due to the different ways of layering, I decide to try and bend long pieces of papers into curved forms. I found that free spaces had been created between the turn of parts; and the mixture of different curves turn into a long tunnel. These spaces could become show rooms of the museum, depending on the change of room size. There should be a large space locating at the entrance, since it will be use as a main hall, suitable for any special events. By doing the experiment, I also found that the length and thickness of the papers will strongly changes the possibilities of forms. This is due to how thin and long strips can be turn and create more loops.

Inside the use of structure in this model, the white curves becomes the main form of the building. It contains thick layers of strips and forms the exterior walls on the side. By looking at the change of gaps between the curves, I believe that entrances would be a suitable function to apply. And the use of glass would be needed to cover the roof and sides, in order to protect the building from wind and rain. I can use a range of the same curved model to form a larger structure, since the museum will have to fit a large amount of relics.

By observing the structure which I had made, I created some sketches about the design of tunnel. By following the brief, the spaces will need to be wide and contains a high ceiling; this will allow a large amount of audiences to have free space between each other. Since this is a part of the museum building, I think that it is possible to apply glass cabinet around the sides, which could be use to store the relics. By using bended structure to cover the interior, the roof is likely to look unbalance. In order to fit lightings and audio equipment on top, the roof could be formed with different layers of material, so that the structure of the building won’t be show to the audiences directly. When looking at the scale and length of the tunnel, flat elevators could be apply at the middle, so that audiences who are going to another area could move faster, without affecting to the others who are looking at the relics.

After looking at the form of the tunnel, I start to use similar curves to product the exterior structure of the model. I decide to use black card to represent the new parts, which contras to the use of white parts. Larger structure had been use compare to the white strips, which makes the architecture to be stable. The use of walls and roofs are bended, which matches the gaps of the tunnel. I had decided to make the roof of the main entrance to be distorted, in order to stop water and wind to damage the glasses in the area.

The images from the Hong Kong Exhibition Centre inspired me to curve the cards into these forms in my model. In order to observe on the details in different directions, I created some sketches that shows how the use of black and white structure are contrasting with each other. Due to the way how strips are overlapped in layers, it could be possible to created pattern of shadows around the building. So for developing this model, I will try and look at forms that contains interesting shadows – such as furniture and objects, and apply the ideas into my further designs.

In order to gather information to buildings which are near water, I went and visit the area near the river in London. During the trip, I collected a selection of photographs about different buildings, and also how landscape are used to decorate the free spaces. These are some watercolor sketches which I had drawn base on the buildings which I had visit.

I had also look at how glass are applied in different buildings, since it can be transform into use of windows and doors depending on the design. I believe that the main entrance of my museum should be base on glass, as it allows natural light to pass in to the lobby, giving the visitors a bright start in the morning. This means that the entrance could be facing the east, as the opening time of the museum is going to be in the morning. I would also have to think about how windows would be open, without being damage by the strong wind and sea wave.

These are a selection of line models which I had created by linking a group of wires together. Since my theme is base on the intersection of lines, I had focus to look at some details where each of the wires are match together. I had also look at the gaps which had been form between the wires – these are possible to become creative spaces where the audiences could stay in.

After looking at the model, I had produce a selection drawings which shows how this design could be use for the functions as a museum. In order to develop this model, I can apply other materials that covers that could fit between the model, such as plastic and fabric, which could represent the surfaces of the building materials.

Landscape drawings by hand, looking at different separations of interior spaces

Page 28 – Visit of London

This is a model which is produce by using a mixture of onion rings, which I had cut into different sizes. This is inspirited by the curves in my tunnel models, as I think that looking at existing objects can give me a stronger understanding of the thickness and weight. Onion is also a organic form, which are different from the wires and card that I had experimented on. The onions are useful for making models, specially due to its flexibility of bending, it allows me to put one onion into another very easily, which forms a stable structure. This also makes the exterior of the building to look soft and elastic. The areas between the curves could be covered with glass, in order to pass natural light into the museum.

I had arrange the onions into different building types, some contains a higher level and some are more wide in space. This gives be a stronger understanding on how suitable the size should be at the location. For my museum deign, the use of material of the structure is likely to be steel compare to wood, as it is a large construction that needs to fit a large amount of audiences and objects. However, the use of wood and bamboo could still be use for decorating the exterior and environment, such as green areas and wall texture etc.

From the experiment of the onions, I had decide to develop the use of curves by cutting out a series of circle patterns using 2D Design and laser cutter. I designed a series of circle shapes which contains joins at different angles – this allows the parts to combined together in lots of different ways, providing me a range of solutions as the structure of my building. I start to create these set of ideas by using a limited of 5 circles, I then join them together by using only the joins. These turn the pieces into simple 3D models. I believe that small ideas and forms are always important, since they can be combined into parts of my museum if I increase their quantity and size. These structure contains a more solid texture compare to the onion rings, which allows the model to kept its shape in different angles.

Page 32 – Model Design 4

These are more complicated models which are developed from the group of curves. Most of them are done base on 3-4 sections of circle arrangements, which forms an asymmetry structure. I think that the flat circle pieces could become a design for the garden and parks around the museum, as it is important to relate my building to the nature. Referring back to the theme of layering, I could try and use CAD models to present an idea how the structure could be duplicate into layers, which creates a thicker design for the walls of the museum. These layers should be separated into different materials, as an amount of windows and concrete would be need for the design.

Page 6 – Design Theme Ideas about the layout of layers inspired from my primary research

Page 35 – Model Dev

Page 33 – Model Design 4

These are a series of sketches which shows how I had come out with the idea of the curves and joins. This represents the different possibilities which they can be arrange in the space, including structure, tunnels, halls and windows. I had also turn the curve models into ideas of how the museum could look like, combing with my other research from before.

After drawing out a selection of sketches about the ideas and form which the model can turn into, I then create more arrangement of the models which builds into a different direction. This makes the form between the layers to create crosses and overlap into more interesting shapes. The shadows of the models had also change depending on how complicated the structure is. This will make the view of the building to look more interesting due to how shadows will change pass the time. On the other hand, I had also test to create simple layering of the circles, in order to show an idea of how my museum could look if all the walls and windows had covered over the structure. In order to see the inside structure more clearly, I would need to apply more glass around the layers of my final model.

In order to find out how the building might look like in a nature environment, I had use Photoshop to combined my drawings of trees and scale people around one of my structure model. This helps me to decide on the size of the building, as I can see if the space can fit a suitable amount of audiences. I had also produce a set of building ideas by using oil marker pens, which had combined my ideas of layering and intersection curves together. This will help me to create further ideas while making the CAD models.

As each of my curve model ideas had contain certain parts which I like, I had selected the sections and join them into a new idea. I then apply layers of glass over the joins of the structure, which finalize this idea into a suitable building. I had also apply patterns over the roof, which is juxtaposing with shape of the curves from below.

This set of models shows a development from my other models, not only focusing on the intersection of wires, but also seeing how they can be overlap and form into a building that contains sensible structures and walls. This is important as my building will need to be hold and stand at a location that might contain extreme weather. Compare to my other wire model, this had also contain a more three dimensional form in different angles, suggesting how the gaps between the wires could become useful spaces of my museum. The information on the left hand side represent what functions would each space be suitable for.

This model suggest how functions could be combined with the space, in order to become a suitable museum idea. I believe that the interior of my building is going to be form and decorated by these style of intersection lines, and objects such as sits, paintings, lightings and sculptures could be set between the gaps.

By combining all the ideas from my hand models, I had generated their shapes and forms into exterior ideas which can actually be use as a museum design.

These will become a part of my further development as I can create CAD models by looking at the features across these designs. I can then start to generate my final design which contains useful functions and spaces, fitting the needs of the brief.

These designs mainly contains a low use of levels and a wide use of space, as it fits the environment of the location at Kai Tak, without causing harmful issues to the visitors and reduce the amount of destruction of the natural environment.

Page 42 – Sketches

This is a CAD model which I had created base on layers, inspirited from the shape of arrow in my wire model. Since this is a design of a museum, a long rectangle area would need to be include across the environment. The way how I had bended the edges of the walls had created shelters covering the ground floor entrances, which decrease the affection of rain and sunlight to the visitors. This also allows the model to fit the arrow shape in different angles of the building.

This is another CAD model which I had created looking at the way how curves are used in my wood models. The use of balance layering forms a useful museum area which contain levels and floors. By changing the size of the inner circle, it forms into extra spaces which could be use on functions such as eco-park and glass tunnels etc., communicate to the audiences in more other ways. I had then start to apply suitable materials including concrete across the walls of the building, which shows me how suitable the museum would look like in the reality world. The use of thin layers of glass had been applied around the sides, applying natural light into the interior environment, since a museum is mostly open at day time – this is also when most of the victors would be arrive from the terminal.

Page 41 – Wire Concept

These use of columns holds the museum’s structure, which makes the building to be safety under the effect of wind and water near the sea side. The way how the layers are placed as un-symmetry, had make the entrances and covers to be focus to the direction of the terminal, making the museum to look attractive to the visitors. In order to increase the amount of space which could be use to exhibit the relics and artist’s work, I believe that extensions could be include near this design idea, which provides a more detailed building design that fits the need of the brief. On the other hand, I can also think about the scale and levels which are inside this building, as this can create similar spaces which are linked together directly.

Page 38 – Model Dev

This model is created by combining the mixture of features between the arrows and curves, which had increased the possible use of spaces for the museum. By looking at the two building parts which shows a juxtapose of shape, I believe that it could be split into the museum and the gallery – this will make it easier for the audiences as they can easily visit the room which they are interested in. However, if splitting the set of museum into different buildings, it could be difficult to travel between one to another, especially in windy or rainy weather. There for to develop this model idea, I will need to include stronger links between each building part, for example the use of tunnels and bridges. I can also think about the use of landscape decoration which could be apply between the gaps of the building, allowing it to fit into the natural environment.

Elevation drawing of the museum by fine liner pens

Page 32, 33 – Model Design 4

Sample of building structure without applying materials

I think that this model contains a strong relation to the theme of layers, both due to how the features are constructed one on top of another, and also by how they separates the use of space across the museum design. I specially like how the use of glass are thinly applied around the side of the layers, created a color pattern to the use of concert. In order to develop this design, I will need to include the use of intersection lines on the details of the building, which will be able to form more creative and organic decoration around the surfaces of the museum.

This is an idea diagram, which shows how the features of my final exterior concept is decided. Most of the parts that forms the building is base on my models and sketches through the project, which I had then developed them into a similar style and form – this makes the deign of the exterior to become unite, since all the features contain suitable connections. For references, the page number near the images shows where each of the features were came from.

Page 26, 35, 37 – Model Designs

This is the exterior design concept of the museum, which had combined the features of layers and intersection lines into a building. Due to the limits of levels near the sea, I had create the museum in a flat and long form, while the floors are build up base on the idea of layering. This design had contain a similar size to the terminal in Kai Tak, which makes them to look parallel from the birds eye view. The images on the right hand side shows the different view points of the design.

The levels of this building are separated into the amount of five to seven floors, some of the rooms contain a smaller size compare to the large halls and presentation spaces. These separates the spaces in order for the use of different functions.

While developing the concept of this design, I will need to think about the height of the roofs over each floors, in order to create suitable spaces for the activities of the museum. Transparent view of the building

Bird’s eye view of the building

Page 36 – Model Dev

Closer views of the exterior features

Eco-friendly decorations over the wall surfaces

Before turning the concept into my final design, I had adjust it into different colour schemes, in order to see which will be more suitable for the location. The use of orange design at first had contain a bright colour surface, which represent a strong idea of energy with the juxtaposition of blue colour glass, this looks attractive as a design, but doesn’t work with the environment due to how it is over attractive. On the other hand, the combination of blue with yellow contains a more peaceful colour scheme, which fits the environment of water due to the large use of blue shades. But as a building, the quality of yellow wall paint might disappear through time, due to the effect of sea waves and wind. There for, I believe that I should use the colours of the natural materials, including the use of wood and concert.

Page 39 – Model Dev

While thinking about how the interior and exterior of the building could have a sensible relation with each other, I had decorate the interior spaces with the layers of curves, inspirited from my wood models. I had place them in different directions, over the walls and the roof, these works like the use of walls, columns and lights, all decorating the spaces of the interior. However, I will need to think about if the curves are suitable to be use in certain spaces, since they might distract the amount of useful spaces, both near the walls and also between the corridors. It is very important for the audiences can walk around the building comfortably.

The ground floor of the museum is going to be a open space, including the functions such as receptions, toilets, cafĂŠ, rest area and storage area. These will all fit around the paths from the main entrance, easier for the audiences to find and visit. On the other hand, I should think about how the spaces could be separated between the walls and decorations, as the museum could get very nosey if nothing is blocking between different areas. And also, escalators would be needed in the interior, in order for the audiences to travel between each levels. Of course, there will also need to be side entrances and fire exits around the building, since healthy and safety is important for the large amount of visitors.

Hong Kong Museum Of Creativity is a museum which focus on the memories and present of art in Hong Kong.

The exterior form of the building had followed the long path area at the location, which shows a parallel with the design of the Kai Tak Terminal. The design had follow the theme of layers and intersections, which had been developed from the range of model experiments. The exterior had been evolved from the SketchUp concept, features and functions had been adjusted in order to suit the needs of the museum – and example of this is how unneeded structures had been reduce, which decrease the amount of waste materials through building.

Near the building, there are different areas of natural landscape parks, which the victors can walk and rest on the grass, observing on the view of the ocean. There are trees near the entrance of the museum, but not near the sea side – this is due to how they could cause danger due to the sea waves and wind.

Inside these floors, four of the levels are designed as open spaces, which contain high roofs and wide room areas. These are suitable for different functions of art presentation, in order to fit the different size of objects.

On the other hand, the other floors had contain a large amount of smaller show rooms, which separate the spaces into different use of functions. These rooms will be suitable for showing relics such as paintings and photographs, allowing the audiences to observe in a silent condition. These rooms contain a lower roof compare to the large halls on the other floors.

The reception table is placed near the doors, which the victors can ask for information and but tickets for the events in the museum. The design of the long curved table will be able to help the large amount of audiences at the same time, since there could be a lot of visitors in peak seasons.

The use of bright lights allow the audience to read the books or use their electronic products. Due to the curve which had been build over the hole of the roof, forms of shadows had been created with the lights above. This decorates the area without using furniture, which saves the use of spaces for the audiences. A side entrance is applied on the side of the wall, which the visitors can directly travel from the terminal to this resting area. This also allow they to escape easily, if emergencies such as fire had happen.

Plan view

This is the lobby of the museum, where the audience will all walk pass when they arrive or leave the museum. It is designed as a multifunctional hall, which any relics could be apply in the room (as long as it fits the needs of height). At the middle of the room, there is a Chinese symbol on the floor, which represent the name of Hong Kong. This is made by the two combination of wood materials, reflecting back to the traditional ideas of the location. The use of curves had extended from the reception to the whole roof on this level, which decorates the space with a continues idea of layers and intersection.

Plan view

As the ground floor is the area where most of the visitors will walk pass and stay at, the size of the corridor had been designed in a wide and long shape, which allows the audiences to walk without affecting other people’s enjoyment. Due to how the reception is located at the middle side of the space, it makes the amount of distance to become similar from the starting point to all of the other areas. And as a middle of the surface, the pattern of the Hong Kong symbol becomes a open space where nothing will be place on top, meaning that the area will always be free for the audiences to stay still at. This allows both the movement of move and still to become suitable for the visitors. On the other hand, guides and signs are located around the whole space, which makes it easy for the visitors to find their way.

Plan view

This is the restaurant space of the museum, which sells food such as sandwiches, coffee, snack box and traditional Chinese deserts to the customers. Due to the reasons which these are all already cooked and prepared by the supplies, the museum would not need to have a kitchen. Instead, a long cafĂŠ counter is enough for selling these food product. Due to how the visitors from the cruise are mostly couples and families who are traveling, I had decide to set four or sixth sits near each of the tables, which will be suitable for most of the audiences to use. And in order to let other visitors to pass through the area with out distracting the audiences who are eating, a path had been use to separate the space.

Plan view

Male Toilet

Disable Toilet

The toilets on the ground floor is located next to the restaurant, which allows the audiences to use after eating. Since these are next to the entrance of the museum, it should contain enough spaces sue to the amount of visitors who might have the needs for using. This is the reason why this toilet had contain a double size, compare to the toilets on the other floors. In order to separate the symbol of male and female without use colours that doesn’t match the colour scheme of the building, the male toilet had kept the use of light blue; while the female toilet is represented in a purple shade. Except on the use of male and female toilets, there is also a disable toilet located next to the resting area, which contains the shortest distance from the entrance. This is because it could reduce the use of time if anybody is urgent to use the toilet. Due to safety reasons, there is an emergency alarm located in the room, which allows the user to communicate with the reception for help. Female Toilet

Plan view

This is a exhibition space which is located at the first floor of the museum. The theme of this floor is base on the ideas of traditional and natural forms inside the location of Hong Kong, which is why wood and records of plants are applied as decorations. As an open space, a wide blank area is available for certain types of exhibition; however sue to the height of this room, only small items will be exhibit in the glass cupboard around the walls. These will be relics such as samples of plants and bone specimens of animals from the pass. In order to allow collection cabinets to be place around the area, the amount of patterns on both the floor and the rood had been decreased, which won’t affect the order of inserting these furniture.

Page 54 – Concept Of Interior Details

Plan view

This is an exhibition room which is designed for presenting historical products and designs of Hong Kong. Due to how wood and bamboo are the most used materials for construction in the pass, the decoration in this room had followed a similar style. All the walls and columns are made by the use of nature materials, directly shows a dominance to the other exhibition rooms in the museum. To make the visitors to feel the historical environment in different ways, a wooden piano is located on the side of the room, which traditional Chinese music will be play through the change of time period on each day. The use of bamboo column works well as a decoration to the wall, since its shadows could be change through the use of light directions.

Plan view

This is the second exhibition hall in the museum, which are designed for exhibiting historical relics of Hong Kong for all the time. This means that the objects in this room is not going to be change through the year. Due to this reason, stages and stands had already been set around the sides of the space, all specially for certain relics or designs. An example of scale which are stored in this floor, are transportation products which are from the history of the location, these had been presented in the room with a suitable amount of lighting. Next to the relics, there will be boards that had contain informations about its history and use, in order for the audiences to understand easily. Low gates of glass will be placed in front of the audiences, in order to protect the relics - these won’t distract the victor’s action on taking photos.

Plan view

This is the artist meeting room, which is located at the third floor of the museum. Unlike the other small rooms, this is the only room which is directly facing the sea. This is due to how it is used to provide the artist a comfortable and enjoyable environment, in order for them to meet and communicate to others with their ideas.

At the middle of the room, there is a circle stage which contains a function of spinning, this allows the artist to put their work at the middle of the room, and present it to the others in a three dimensional way. When presentation is unneeded, there will be a snooker table at the middle, which the artists can play and enjoy coffee in their free time. A large table board could be placed over the snooker table, if any objects will need to be place on top.

Due to the reason of privacy, curtains will be apply near all the windows and doors, so that the artists can communicate without other people’s notices. The use of wall materials will also need to be thick, in order to block the sound from the two areas.

Plan view

For the use of small exhibitions, these rooms had all got two similarities: the first part is that they are formed with a oval shape, which sides of the walls had been curved to fit the style of the building. The second similarity is that their windows are not directly facing the sea – this is due to the reason which the relics and designs should be the main focus to the audiences, and the view of the Victoria Harbour might affect their sight while observing on the works.

The glass windows of the building could all be covered up, in order to suit the needs of lighting in the room. This could be use to protect the quality of certain relics, such as paintings and photography, as they couldn’t be place under light for a long period of time.

This photography exhibition room is located near the escalators at the third floor. Due to the reason which photography shouldn’t be place under sun light, this room is specially designed as a dark and sealed environment. This allows the audiences to observe on the photographs without being distracted. Depending on the size of the photos, frames will be use to apply them over the war, which the room will always be suitable for different styles of images. This room can be use for presenting the photos of Hong Kong, and also images which had been took by other photographers, depending on the seasons and things which had happen to the sociality and the world.

Plan view

Other then the art and designs which are in two dimensional, it is also important to have spaces where artist could exhibit their three dimensional sculptures and models. The natural sculptures shown in this room is an example of how large scale of art could be presented inside this wide space, while there are still enough spaces for the victors to walk around. In order to show the information about the work of the artist, a screen is applied on the wall, which could guide the audiences when needed. Since different sculptures might need a different use of light environment, long slice of windows a located around half of the room, which could be open and shut depending on the artist’s needs. This helps to create a better presentation through the use of light and shadows across the sculpture.

Plan view

In order to allow the audiences to travel between each floors with the least amount of time, I had place the escalators next to each other. This allows the victors to save time, since their travel schedule could be very tight due to the cruise. As a relation to the theme colour, the use of glass around the escalators are all in a transparent blue colour. The use of circle patterns on the floor had work as a symmetry between the escalators, which reflects back to the circle tunnel at the second floor. Same as the other two main levels, toilets are located near the escalators, which the victors will be able to find it very easily. Photography and paintings about Hong Kong had been placed around the walls of this floor, which shows both the history and art about the location.

The pattern on top of the roof is created by combining the ideas of Chinese somersault cloud and the Tai Chi symbol, which balances on its opposite side. Lights are applied between the gaps of the pattern, in order to apply enough amount of light around the large space of the hall. Since this is a wide space, it is suitable for all kinds of exhibition that contains a large scale.

A film cinema is located directly facing the escalators, which tickets can be bought from the reception at the ground floor. This room can be use to exhibit 3D movies about the location, or even audio works which are created by the artist or designers. There are 48 sits available in total, which is the reason why the victors will need to buy tickets before entering. Outside the cinema, there are spaces where the audiences can wait at, before entering the incline designed room.

In order to have enough toilets between the building, a toilet is located on this floor, near the walls of the building. In order to have enough privacy for the audiences, blocks of walls had been applied in certain angles, which blocks the views into the toilet. Compare to the scale of toilets at the ground floor, this space only contains half its size, but the amount is still enough for the needs of the visitors.

Plan view

The other image on the right shows the multi functional hall in another view, standing form the angle near the film cinema. This shows a clearer shape of the Tai Chi pattern on the top of the roof, combined with the use of lights.

Plan view

After traveling up with the escalators, the visitors will arrive the fifth floor, the space is linked to three different rooms, including the traditional painting exhibition room, the dance exhibition room and the three dimensional projection area above. These are linked by the use of stairs and escalators from level five. Between this level, large scale photography are placed across the walls, which represent certain important things about Hong Kong. These helps to decorate this “transfer point, which the audiences will have related objects to see while walking to another space.

Plan view

By following the traditional styles of Chinese architecture, the entrance of this room had included a higher beam, under the door. This means that the audiences will need to walk over it in order to enter the room.

This room is used for exhibiting traditional Chinese ink paintings, which the interior had been designed with the style of wooden and white colour scheme. Due to the design of the window, small amount of natural will be able to pass in to the room, which the view of the outside will help to increase the beautiful atmosphere while observing.

Plan view

This is the dance exhibition room, which contains a circle interior on the sixth floor. This is a small area which allows artist to present their dance to certain audiences. At the middle of the room, there is a stage that can be increase and spin by control, which can turn the room into a small presentation space for a single art piece or relic object. Due to how this room is separated at the far end of the building, it could be use for booking and work as a payment area, which the audiences will have to buy a ticket in order to enter and see the special relic on the stage. Although windows are set at an angle of the room, but it can be complete blocked if the exhibition is not suitable with sun light.

Plan view

This is the three dimensional projection area, which is located on the sixth floor – the top of the museum building. The height of this room had contain triple the height of each level, which makes it suitable to exhibit 3D projection work. Around the room, stage lightings are located on both the walls and the roof. These can all be adjusted inside the control room at the corner. These contains different colors and could be adjust for different performances. On the other hand, audio and music can be play out from the speakers. The audiences could stay at anywhere in the room, in order to feel the exhibition in different angles, while themselves also become a part of the projection art.

Plan view

The side of the building facing the sea, is designed as a small terminal for transferring storage and relics from shipping, which is why the surface is flat and smooth compare to the other sides. From the exterior to the interior ground floor, there are three gates which had been set at different angles. These had all contain a suitable height, which allow large scale of relics and art to be send into the building. On the other hand, machines and electricity control are locate in this staff area, which the visitors will not be able to access.

Plan view

The image above shows the restaurant area at the outdoor, which are placed over the layers of wood floors. There are two doors near the building which allows both the staffs and the victors to bring the food from the cafĂŠ to the outside, depending on where they want to sit at. In bad weather situation, the tables and chairs will be covered with the wooden floor, so that they can stay in the same area without being damage. This reduce the time of setting them up again and again.

Natural grass are located near the building, which had been spread out into a similar form of a Chinese fan, representing the ideas of the cultures in Hong Kong. Plywood and oak wood had been used on the stairs near the grass, since they can create two shades of brown to the environment. On the other hand, trees are only planted near the entrance, in order to reduce the possibility of being damage by wind and sea waves.

Since the original location is formed by flat land and grass, I believe that it is important to reapply these features around the museum. This provides a more ecofriendly environment near the sea, while the functions of the museum will still work suitably. The long structures which separates the different types of grass, had been designed as the bone of the Chinese fan, which the visitors can sit on them just like benches in the park. This creates solid functions which won’t be affected by the strong wind, since it is directly linked to the surface of the location.

These images shows the comparisons between the concept and outcome of my final design. Although there are adjustments made through the process of designing, but the outcome had still follows a similar shape and form at the end. The whole process of designing had follow the theme of layers and intersection of lines, which makes the design to follow a related style. The biggest changes are between the use of materials and decorations, due to the suitable cost and reliability for the location. However, by reducing the complex and difficult forms in the building, it allows me to think about how spaces can be use more suitably, which at the end, all the rooms had contain a sensible use. This also means that there are less amount of waste through the use of spaces. There for, I believe that the final outcome is more suitable and useful for the purpose of a museum.

By evaluating on the whole project, I believe that I had completed a large success through the improvements of hand drawing, exploring models with different materials and learn how to create CAD models with suitable forms and interior. The design of this museum had fit all the needs from my design brief, and also suitable for the location which I had chosen. Compare to the projects from before, I had think more about the needs of the audiences and how the building could be combined with its environment, while applying the use of layers and intersection of lines as the decoration theme. The design of the exterior had shows the strong concept which had been developed from the other models, while the use of layers had presented well as different levels of the building. Inside all the elements through my designs, I believe that the use of curves which had been adjusted base on the onion rings and wood models, had become the visual representation of the theme. This had work well with the design of space, while the decoration creates shadows of lines that intersect with each other – I like the idea of how these details will change depending on the amount of sunlight and weather, and this allows the building to become a part of the atmosphere. On the other hand, the use of Chinese traditional ideas had been applied through the design, including the letter of Hong Kong, the use of wood features, and also the form of the Chinese fan landscape, these all represent a relation between the museum and its location at Kai Tak, Hong Kong. Through the process of designing the interior, I believe that the most difficult part is to organize how each spaces and rooms would be suitable for the needs of function, while adjusting their location and sizes through the process of designing. Also, I found that the use of colors could affect the audiences feeling, such as the colour temperature and the use of light or dark shade; this is important depending on what relics are being shown in the rooms of the museum. Except from this, the use of materials can also be use to represent the culture of certain location, just like how the use of wood and bamboos shows a direct idea to the historical buildings of China. This is why I had designed certain of the rooms with the use of wooden materials. As a differences to my other units, this is the first time for designing a building with this amount of floors. Due to the amount of rooms and the scale of exhibition halls, the process of designing takes a longer amount of time to think and present all of the ideas. The importance of balance and connection between each of the floors becomes one of the main focus when designing, in order to make sure that the visitors can travel to other areas without wasting their time. I had decide to produce this outcome as a CAD model, since it can provide me a high quality model with both the exterior and interior. This allows me to actually think about how the audiences will be feeling when they are inside the space, since it is very important to understand their needs and thoughts. This had help me to produce a space which is suitable for present and communication, a place where both artists and the audiences can talk about the work inside each exhibitions. Overall in this project, I had developed the techniques of drawing accurate lines and plans, which can be use to present the design ideas. The quality of the CAD models had also been strongly improved, in order to express the spaces with a suitable theme and functions. The most difficult part in this project, is mainly on the relationship between the exterior and interior, since I want to create a museum which both looks interesting on the outside, but also useable for the needs at the inside. In order develop this project in the future, I can think about the needs of functions such as car parks and bus stops which are near the building, in order to fit better needs of the audiences through the use of transportations.
