01 Underneath The Central Aixs
Public Space in the Urban Context of Beijing Axis
A series of space combination- every architecture with an open spcae- are grouped into a continuous axis in Beijing, which represents hierachy and order- the symbol of the ancient Chinese absolute monarchy. With the ancient Chinese imperial architectures and reidential areas built and planned symmetrically on either side, the central axis acts as a spine of Beijing city through history. On the open space between the Bell Tower and Drum Tower, a market is planned on the axis to solve the inconvenience for residents in community when making their daily purchases.
The aim of this project is to explore how to create a market space typology that meets residents’ demand for space use within a strict urban historical context.
In order not to disrupt the continuous and sequential spatial character of the central axis and the hierarchy of the two ancient buildings on the site, the entire market building is concealed underground, leaving the ground level space available as a pedestrian square. Based on the daylight considerations, courtyard is proposed as my strategy to organise the space. With staggered openings on different levels, the building met the needs of urban historical context on ground level and market use underground level respectively. Besides, the underground atrium carrying certain urban activitie enriches the spatial layers of these public activities.

The axis is like the spine of Beijing city texture, which organised roads and residential areas in a symmetrical form. The Ancient Chinese Imperial Architectures were built and planned symmetrically on the axis as well.
The spatial pattern of Solid - Void - Solid symphony, is grouped into the axis with many changes. The Void part make the axis continuous on an urban scale, and also allows people to enjoy the buildings.
The central to official timekeeping in China in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
The permanent market structure was first constructed for mass people gathering and became a nucleus of Beijing northern city.
In Republican Era, the brown space became an informal square where county fairs were hold regularly.
Out of historic landscape protection and public acitivities needs , Zhonggulou Market was moved further north to make way for a civic square
Scattered Supplies Stores appeared after the demolition
Private and temporary stalls started to appear in hutong and siheyuan to meet citizens’ daily purchases by trying to replace the Zhonggulou Market. Howerver, those self-growing stores didn’t solve the inconvenience for their scale, instead they have had bad effect on ancient architectures and city appearance
ground central axis
To keep with the symmetry and symphony of Beijing’s central axis, the external form of the building must be symmetrical and not protrude from the ground - i.e. the main space of the market building should be located underground. Out of consideration of daylight and local residential housing form siheyuan, I chose courtyard as a unit to organise the market space. Through the different openings of two levels, the building not only keeps the ground level symmetrical and void but also avoids the homogeneity and monotony of the underground market space.
The entrance in the form of a three-circle ramp and the lift supported by a separate structure in the middle take into account the needs of special groups - elderly or disabled people. At the same time the ramp adds to the spatial interest of this courtyard, attracting children who make the courtyard full of vitality. In consideration of safety issues, the width of the ramp cannot be changed, so the upper and lower openings of this courtyard are basically the same
The dense residential buildings surrounding the site leave the area lacking a green space. In this courtyard greenery has been planted. Sunlight penetrates through the leaves of the plants to create a relatively soft natural light inside. The railings and support bars are specially arranged with wire mesh for plant growth, which prevent the roots and moisture of the plants from eroding the structure. The green courtyard attracts birds and pets in the area and provides a quiet and contemplative place
This courtyard is the largest and liveliest of all the courtyards. In order to carry the weekly fair of the market, under supporting limits, the area of the courtyard is as large as possible to accomadate rich activities and a great number of people. With entrances are arranged around the yard, the space becomes flow and open. The structural columns protrude from the ground to support a light-transmitting shade net, under which enough tables and seats are set for people to sit, chat and eat.
Fujian Tulou (China),multi-storey earthen houses built between the 12th and 20th centuries over 120 km in south-west of Fujian province. They house up to 800 people each. Built for defence purposes, they have been in the World Heritage List since 2008. However, due to people's lifestyles changing and the hollowing out of villages, most of Tulou buildings are gradually deserted, except for few famous ones on the UNESCO list. The good news is that with the government drawing up to revitalise traditional villages by developing tourism, and the problem of deserted earthen buildings in Fujian is being taken seriously. This project is located in the center of Nanjiangcun. As a significant node of a planned tourist route for the traditional village, it aims to adapt Tulou structure to mordern public space use to protect the regional culture and building heritage. By demolishing part of the exsisting new structure constructed by villagers themself, the earthern structure is exposed. The site is re-organized and programed to meet the masterplan and surrounding natural environment. A series of renovation and extension that specific to exsisting building conditions is implemented to make the site full of vitality

Tulou Structure and Space Research
The building is built over 120 km on a stone base with raw clay as the main material, with bamboo and wood as wall bones and anchored by wooden shaped anchors at ding crossings. The enlosed courtyard space form is depended on the geographical location and the demanded intensity of defense.
Masterplan of Nanjiang Traditional Village Conservation and Development
From the planning structure, the site is situated at the center node of the village and tourists track. The new Cultural Experience Center accommodates tourist center, local products shops, exhibition, institute of cultural conservation, hotel, viewing tower and flexible outdoor event space

The lower part of the newly-built viewing tower adopts steel truss in the centre as support structure, hidden under external solid raw-clay walls. By contrary, the upper part is supported by wooden structure covered by transparent glass. The wooden structural connection is inherited from traditional constrcution techiniques--wooden shaped anchors at ding crossings. In this way, traditional material and structure are showed clearly and the new high-rise tower exists in harmony with surrouding architectures
03 Valley View Tour
Public Space in the Alp Mountain Range
A mountain hut is proposed on the roadside of the Julier Pass mountain pass, which is highly visited by tourists and locals beacause of the unique landscapes that it crossed. Located at the point where the borders of Switzerland’s largest national park--Parc Ela, it is a delightful passage for visitors to watch the fantastic mountain pass scenery after the hiking tour in Parc Ela.
This project aims to magnify the surprise brought by the stunning scenery of the the fascinating valley view after trekking through the mountains, and at the same time, to provide visitors and tourists a place to have a rest after their long jorney.
By using triangle faces to comprise the interface of the key space, I created an artifitial hiking path to extend the unique landscapes on the hiking trail ways in Parc Ela and to control the infiltration of valley view on the way. And also, building programmes are path-centered and intertined to make sure all the space in the architecture obtain changing valley views.

04 A Climbing Stroll in the City
Continuous Linear Space Responding to Surroundings
The project is the latest development in the area around Tongji University after the establishment of a series of estates and commerce spaces from 1970 to 2000 -- the age when messy city planning happened frequently in China. Thus, the chosen site is around with buildings of different forms and heights and It’s a difficulty how the public building will respond to the such complex surrounding urban context as a wholeness. Also, despite of high population density and a complex flow of people, there are no public squares in the area for them to gather.
The project aims to provide the maximum amount of public space for the surrounding community as an open building while managing the relationship between the activity space and the complex urban environment and the functional space of the library
By extending a continuous upward climbing ramp, which carries the public activities, from the corner of the city street, I extended the urban space to the maximum. The ramp climbs in a zigzag fashion so that the building has different forms and corresponding activity in different orientations to respond to the complex surrounding environment. The interior reading space is similarly organised in a linear spatial mode. By changing the geometrical relationship of the spactial line , the indoor and outdoor space is flowing and well-organised.

Rash urban plannig with a haphazard roads network and high density of residential real estates was implemented outside Tongji University duiring the period of 1970-2000, leading to the area a large population and a complex flow but little outdoor public space
