BIO FLOW -A Data-Driven Aggregation Cityscape LONDON|UNITED KINGDOM GROUP WORK|THE BARTLETT, 2019
INTRODUCTION London is suffering from flooding and pollution from the Thames River, where floating plastics are affecting the water environment as well. This is a prospective urban design project based on big data, aiming to solve the problem of flooding and pollution near the London City Airport. In the site analysis stage, we explored the site according to relevant datasets by data visualisation and identified certain area most in need of design intervention through data-mining algorithm as a part of design method. In the design stage, aiming at the pollution problem in the Thames River, we decide to recycle the floating plastic in the river as material, and transform it into basic units, and then obtain a structure extending from the river bank to the city through a data-driven aggregation design method. The project build a structure act as a flooding barrier along the river, and we created different functional cityscape to re-energise the site.

FLOODING FROM SURFACE WATER This mapping shows the risk of flooding from surface water in London. It gives an indication of the scale and the distribution of surface water flooding risk in London. And it shows three extents of ground that could be affected by a flooding associated with rainfall which is available for rainfall scenarios with a 3.3%, 1%, 0.1% chance of occurring in any given year.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION
In order to analyse how the flooding would impact the daily urban operation in the city airport site, we combine flooding extent with waterways, traffic and Greenland, including forest and grass area, water bodies, railways, traffic gathering points, parking and so on. According to these overlapped mappings, we could have a general understanding of our site.

MASTER PLAN
In the design part, we decide to use L-System algorithm to create a basic unit to imitate the shape of coral, and then to create a structure that interlocking but porous. In order to achieve our role of controlling the flooding and intercepting the plastic products in the Thames River. In this experiment, we set balloon as reverse space, and then casually drop units on the surface of the balloon, after these units has formed a certain structure, then we burst the balloon, and we got a more interesting structure. These spaces can be used as an urban space for human activities or as a habitat for fish. The figure below shows the experimental results, top and front views.

The functions of the spaces in this structure changes dynamically with the change of water level in a day. With the falling tide, more structures come out of the water and the fish habitat returns to deeper river position. More activity spaces for the users are generated and it allows users to get close to water and talk to water. These section drawings show the gradual changes during the highest and lowest water levels in one day.
As the water level changes, so do the public activity places, plastic containers and recycling centers. During high water levels, the plastic containers and recycling center become larger, while the human activity areas decrease. During low water levels, human activity areas increase and plastic containers retreat to shore as the tide recedes. Functional areas that vary according to water level increase the elasticity of design strategy. The plastic is carried into the site by water flow at high tide, attached to the structures, and left on the structures after low tide for recycling and reprocessing.

WANDERING IN ABSOLUTE FREEDOM - From Chinese poetry to Landscape TIANJIN | CHINA INDIVIDUAL WORK | 2016 Chpater01 Chpater02 Chpater03
尘埃 (A speck of dust) 鲲鹏 (Swing at highest point ) 朝菌 (The Pandora’s Box)
INTRODUCTION This project is inspired by a prose / poem named 'wandering in absolute freedom' by Zhuangzi. The writer uses a series of comparison and analogy to express his persuasion and his understanding about life and freedom. I use landscape language to translate my understanding of the poem. The project is not based on a real site. The poem is beyond imaginative and I want to keep its character and keep the project personal. This is why I chose to do the project without any concern about reality or technical difficulties. There are three different plots pictured in my landscape interruption of the poem. I use Chinese characters in my design explanation to keep the originality of the poem.
[15]
[16]
1
“如尘埃般飘荡” Floating as a speck of dust This scene is set on a lake, which surrounded by endless mountains. People go into bobbles, floating on the water and experience the helplessness of being 尘埃 (a speck of dust).
THE OBSERVER The image depicts a female scholar observing the scene I set. The observer herself is also a speck of dust. When reading at my portfolio, you would also be regarded an object/ 尘埃 in the universe without self-awareness.

“扶摇而上九万里”
This is a plot inspired 鲲鹏 (kun peng). I am using a narrative way to tell 鲲 鹏 (kun peng)'s life story. Visitors would enter the space from water, and climb up to finally reach an extreme height. The swing at the highest point celebrates sense of freedom.
The steps becomes narrower and narrower as you climbing. It becomes so narrow that it only allows one person to pass at a time. Finally you reached the platform with a swing. The whole universe becomes so quite and you are totally immersed in the surrounding landscape - you can not feel anything but the sound of freedom. immersed in the landscape around you and the feel of freedom.
Visitors are invited firstly to the entrance under water - as a metaphor of 鲲 鹏 (kun peng)'s early life. Later on users would climb hundreds of steps to the top of mountain, and then take the swing at highest point - the giant bird.

The Pandora's Box It changes every moment. Every time you come and see something which you will never see again the next time. You miss something and you are not even aware of, like the mushroom and cicada. This installation is a glass box sitting on the center of a lake. The box has a mirror glass from inside and a translucent glass surface outside. Inside of the box the scenes vary on daily basis. They are a collection of beautiful moments inspired by seasonal changes of landscape. The design intention is to provide visitors different experience all the time and encourage them to cherry every moment. Salty and clean, the smell of seaweed embraces you from every direction.

Working model 1. I was using different scales of models to explore the potential spatial arrangement and create different kind of space for users. To understand the design better, I was observing the space at human scale and experience the difference between different compositions. 2. I also explored and tried different material and find out the best tree and hard material which suit the site.
1.Similar to the movable trees in planters, the chairs are movable as well. The furnitures provide more possibilities and flexibilities for social events, outdoor activities and fun.
2.Courtyard space The two small pocket spaces in between the library and two departments were both under used currently because of lack of proper landscape. Lawns, trees and furniture are proposed to bring more active to the space, whilst continuing the same design language as central square.
