About Me

Yuhang Lin I consider myself to be a highly motivated individual who enjoys design works to see inspirations and ideas become resolved by creative and technical process. I completed my Bachelor degree in Landscape Architecture with Ecology route. My educational background provides me a more in-depth understanding of ecology and habitat creation. Through the specialist training in ecology, I am able to assist in the restoration of degraded environments and also to understand the wider implications of design proposals on existing habitats. My experience in University of Sheffield provides me wealthy of knowledge. I challenged myself in different projects: exploration and intervention design, technical habitat creation, sustainable housing project, integrated urban design, technical construction and planting design. I have high hand-drawing skills and proficiency in Adobe Creative software, Auto CAD, Sketch Up, and Microsoft Office. Whilst studying I have join variety of events. The volunteer experiences provide me more detailed understanding of how landscape design achieves the diverse social and ecological value in reality, and how planting and construction assist a landscape to be flexible in a dynamic condition. The group work and part time job experiences developed my ability of cooperation and presentation. I enjoy processing information together and interacting with different ideas within a group. I am looking to gain employment of year-out position. I hope to become a valuable member of the team with my skills and hard working attitude.

CIQ Project

The Tunnel

The city is a tunnel. Road lights, advertisements and sign boards, buildings and tree canopies are uprising from the ground. The roads extend to faraway place. Our surrounding expands horizontally and vertically like a tunnel. Everyday people pass through the tunnel of city busily and quickly. The idea of ‘tunnel’ came from the city. The existing steel bars and bricks stand for the past. The clod and flat concrete ground and uplifting glass wall stands for the cities now. And the dream of floating in forest may happen in the future. ‘The tunnel’ of CIQ is an embodiment of the overlap of times, the combination of history, modern and future world. Walking cross ‘the tunnel’, escaping from the pressure of ‘city tunnel’, start a distinctive journey.

CIQ Project

The Tunnel

The open and flat plaza ensures visual permeability of the hub tunnel and allowed different activities to happen such as exhibition and mobile market. The linear concrete paving, brick benches and lights encourage the movement of people and transport them to the center tunnel. There will be two glass steps extend from the glass box. The rotating steel squares, which made from old structural supporting steel bars, creating the architectural and dynamic atmosphere. The cooperation of new and historical materials emphasize the overlap of time. There used to be a derelict factory in the center of the site. The design remains the base of this historical heritage, and build new glass curtain wall over the brick base. Numbers of broken bricks will be inlaid in some glass pieces. The wall of center box is the combination of modern and vernicular, stands for the rebirth and uplifting of the CIQ.

Supplier: Dillmeier Glass Company Precast linear size: 500× 100× 19 mm, with flat cutting edging treatment. Unpigmented clear float tempered glass with linear patterned finish. Higher strength and thickness, and more safety. Linear pattern avoid slipping problem and dealing with the high heels and wheelchair issues. High transparency create the sense of floating.

Supplier: Dillmeier Glass Company. Precast trapezoid sized glass slabs. Length: 1000mm1800mm, Width: 300mm. Thickness: 18mm. Flat cutting edging treatment. Unpigmented highly roughcast finish tempered glass. Rough texture and edging cutting improve safety. Low transparency ensure comfort of people sitting under the steps.

Nottingham Island Site The Drift

Vision

The island site is southern gateway of Nottingham city center, adjacent to large residential space, which brings high potential of social and lifestyle mix. The new island site aspires to cultivate a balanced life-mode by channeling the energetic drift from city centre and peaceful drift from neighborhood community, bringing Nottingham Southern getaway a new culture.

Landscape as Narrative The irragular tree branches and roots emphasize the linear pipe.

The historical gas pipe pass though the tree tunnel, the open, smooth and architectural stem of tree, making contrast with the old broken wall, narrating the stories of the site.

The large open space is designed to achieve multifunction, allow variety of events to happen such as exhibition, outdoor market, and buster performance. The center waving lawn is the landmark of the park, which is the embodiment of the site culture.

A highly enclose space with diverse cliff and repeating ground pattern of drift, which can encourage people to explore. Path though the dense woodland, visitors can find a dramatically steep path, leading to the open woodland on the top of the cliff. The changing of spatial quality enriches the journey and encourages people to find relaxing life though tense life.

The naturalistic place for people to refreshing and slow down. The drift in this space is formed by series of small islands with grassy bank, which have high ecological value for water voles and invertebrates to life. The creation of suitable habitats and solution of habitat fragmentation under climate change provide valuable educational opportunity, and also encourage people to enjoy and learn form nature. The space also provides aesthetic value for adjacent neighborhood due to lower topography.

The Drift

Planting and Key Management

Vegetation is used to create the gradient of characteristics from formal to natural, narrating the journey in the site. There is a mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees in variety form to ensure the vitality throughout a year and vary space identity. Feature trees (Liriodendron tulipifera) are used as circulation cues to enhance coherence and hint the rhythm of spaces arrangement. Bright shrubs such as Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' are used to deliver a sense of energetic living style. Planting is considered to create the mosaic of texture of foliage and vary the enclosure of spaces, which enrich the aesthetic and spatial quality, and improve the legibility of different spaces. The detailed planting design area is in the west and north spaces, which apply gridding and linear trees (principally Populus tremuloides) with clipped shrubs and architectural perennials (Allium) to cultivate formal and urban style.

Year 1

Staking • Apply single skateon the one- third height of bare root trees to allow the stem to sway and thicken. • According to Nottingham prevailing wind direction, stakes should be established on southwest of the trees to ensure the trees are blown away from the stakes. • Adjust tree ties in autumn and spring to avoid constriction of stems. Remove the stakes after two growing seasons.

• Keep 2 metres diameter circles around trees for first 3 years. Apply mulching mats over the circle to avoid weed.

Year 5

Cutting

back and burning

• Cut perennial and grass from March to keep structure and provide food and shelter for wildlife over winter. • Using hand tool or machinery to cut stems close to the dormant top or ‘crown’ of the plant, avoiding the damage of new shoots. • Apply proper mulch and fertilise to assist growth and flowering. • Separate and burn all diseased material to the compost heap.

Watering • Watering newly sown plants with high priority due to their vulnerable to water-stress. • Perennials and alliums need more watering during hot period to boost their performance. • Ensure enough watering of young trees and shrubs.

Year 10 On

• Pruning the tree by removing dead, damaged, diseased shoots at first, followed by lax, weak and rubbing shoots. • Pruning out disease in dry weather, clean the pruning tool after pruning to minimize disease spread. • Continue to prune the aspen trees by removing the side-shoots on lower two-thirds height of main stem in winter. • The shrubs may have grown to their ultimate height, clipping Ligustrum delavayanum regularly to keep ball-shape in different size.

Mulching • Check the covering and thickness of mulches regularly, adding new mulches in autumn and spring when the soil is warm. Laying mulches after new planting and repleacement. • Ensure new mulches layer is about 7 cm thick. • Lay mulches on moist soil after weed control.

Great Crested Newt is Amphibian. It appears black or dark brown skin with bright orange underside. It grows up to 15 cm in length, female newt is slightly bigger than male newt.

Great Crested Newts

Small seasonal flooding ponds with well vegetated margins for breeding. The ponds will be nutrients rich, free of small fish and not too shaded. There will be some burrows, logs and rubble piles in the grassland, wetland and scrubs near the ponds, also the tree roots in surrounding woodland will provide suitable refuge.

Water voles are herbivores, feeding 8 of their body everyday on a huge vari of vegetation, including sedges, grass rushes and common reeds. They a eat tree barks and fruits in autumn a winter. Very occasionally, invertebrat insects and small fish are eaten.

Water Voles are terrestrial mammals, which have chestnut-brown coat and short hair-covered tail. The head-body length is 140-220mm. The water vole population in the UK has a 90-95% loss from 1960s to 1990s and still dramatically today.

Although Great Crested Newts breed in ponds, they spend much of times on land. They prey among grassland, woodland, scrub and wetland. Activities on land occur almost at night.

In summer, the newts may back to pond to feed. The amount of small fish should be guaranteed for them to prey.

Female newts lay hundreds of eggs. The larvae metamorphose to efts, and begin to leave the ponds in August, which last for about 2 months. It takes two to four years for them to reach sexual maturity.

The burrow of water vole can be found by the ‘lawn’ of cropped grasses around the hole. They also dig burrows in steep grassy banks, which may have underwater entrances.

From March to June is the breeding period. Females give birth in burrows, which have more than five litters a year with five to eight babies each.

Water voles can swim and dive very well in water. Water voles will not travel very far from their burrows, which males have territory about twice large than females. 20
