Being a central green space for a business area, the main purpose of this site is to provide a relaxing and enjoyable environment for the office workers nearby. Due to the fact that these people do not have enough time to do some complex activities, this design is focused on creating a place that people can sit down to communicate or take a rest in the nice environment, and help people find a place to forget the pressure in work or just think something alone.

Site Structure

The design aims at provide a green space for people to relax, so the planting design is very important in this site. What the planting design tends to achieve is that no matter stand in any place of the site, people can always enjoy a view of green trees. Section C-C'

WATER PLAN

Stormwater management is a vital part of this design. The plan contains much green space that is in a low position, so the rainwater can flow through the green space and being purified, than all the water can be gathered in the container underground, and the pond in the ground can also gather some rain water from the green roof

9

The main water collecting pond in the site, and the planting bed can purify the rainwater efficiently. The micro-relief design can be seen as a blocking view, it can separate the main road and the green space, which creates a quiet and relaxing area for individuals to enjoy themselves.

green space system along the subway

12

Located in the south of the commercial center and close to the subway and railway, the site has to be seen as an important part of the green space system along the subway.

CURRENT PROBLEM • There is not enough green space near the site, the place nearby is full of commercial buildings, which make the area boring and unbeautiful, and the micro environment is this place is dirty. • The buildings take too much space and residents and students nearby cannot find a place to relax and take a walk. • The transportation of the space near the subway station is disordered, there is not an open space outside the station for people. • The square outside Hual ian commercial center cannot provide a nice scenery for people who pass by, and the seats are not enough. • The street planting does not provide a comfortable view for people, the only planting are the border trees along the street. • The site lays beside the railway, there is no noiseproof structure for people.

CULTURE There are many international students live in this district, so the culture in this area is very complicate. Besides, the pub street is just beside the site, and music is very popular in this area

The aim of this design is not only to create a place to relax and communicate for the residents nearby, but also accomplish the green system of the subway line. Due to this background, planting becomes an important part of this design. Considering the residential district and universities in neighborhood, the park also provide some place for study, such as the specified flower and tree garden for students to have more knowledge of plants, and parent-child activity area that provide a place for children to show their paintings or other works of the park, which makes residents interact with the landscape in park. Because of the complicated culture in the district, the design is inspired by the classical Chinese garden but built in a modern way, like the using of blocking view, 15 opposite scenery and enframed scenery.

INSPIRATION

Summer Palace

Beihai Park

The design focuses on the feeling of people, and solving the problems. In the design, the site was covered by trees and flowers, which make the micro climate nearby much better and provide a nice view for people who pass by. The whole design was inspired by classical Chinese gardens, so the mountain and water structure of the design is similar to summer place, and the directions of visitor’s line of sight and the position of view point are inspired by Beihai Park. Besides, this design uses many methods of classical Chinese gardens planning, such as the using of opposite scenery, blocking view and leaking through scenery. These methods are beneficial for the building of the landscape.

This garden is inspired by a story of ancient man who gave up rich life but worked hard to make a living by himself in the way he liked. The students are encouraged to feel the happiness of working there. So there is an open stage in the Sunken Plaza for all of the students to show the achievements of their work or just something they like. Besides, being the garden of the studentcenter, there is also some open space for students to get together and discussed. This is a garden of exhibition and communication.

SECTIONS AND PERSPECTIVES Reading garden is located behind the museum and near the library, which aims at providing a quiet place for students to read or relax in a beautiful environment. So there are many seats in the garden and a plenty of trees help a lot in keeping the garden quietly. Fishing garden has main scenery of water, students can get very close tothe wateron the boardwalk, and there are also many fish in the water, students can experience an enjoyable time there. Moreover, storm water management is considered in the design of the sunken plaza of this garden. When the rain comes, the storm water will run through pervious concrete brick paving in the plaza and be collected to the pipe underground. Then the storm water would be reused in irrigation for the lawn and plantings.

Reading Garden

The farming garden is a place to encourage participating in creating the landscape and having more interaction with the campus landscape, which can help them feel better living and studying in campus. Students can have their own space to grow flowers and plants even vegetables in the way they like in these gardens. It is a good way for students to learn knowledge of plants as well as the sense of responsibility. What is more, there is a little plaza in the west of the garden where students can put the seeds they harvest on the wall and exchange the seeds, or just sit down and talk to each other

CONCEPT

Located in the east of Harbin, Daowai District has been always famous for its history and flourishing culture, and the site of the design is the earliest district with the buildings of Chinese-Baroque style . However, after nearly 100 years, the buildings are too damaged to be lived in. Not only is it dangerous for the residents, but also weaken the historical sense of Harbin.

A f t e r a c a re f u l s u r vey t o the people who lives in this neighborhood, we found that many of them have a deep impression of the prosperity of culture of Daowai district in their childhood. The aim of design is to fulfill the necessity of people, so we start from rebuilding cinema and theater of this neighborhoodas to recall the past prosperity. This design includes rebuilding the cinema and theater, creating the public green space and improving courtyard environment.
