Cistercian Monastery Manhattan, Kansas Fall 2018 The main idea for the monastery is to be isolated from the secular world, so without all the distraction monks could be able to learn more about God. Because of the special urban context, it is crucial to containing monks inside the monastery while keeping a connection to the local community. The second idea for the monastery is that it should close to nature, as humble as a monk, they live and work with nature to be close to God.
Located in Manhattan, Kansas. a suburban area with a population of about1,200,000. the site is at the center of the area, surrounded by public buildings, high school on the top left, elementary school on the left side of the site and church on the top. Lots of residential buildings in this area.
The first opportunity is to respect the context, let the conner be a public entry similar to all other three public buildings did. Then establish three front sides of the building and backside of the building.

Green area
The monastery divided into three parts, the green one is the public part of the monastery, it contains lobby, office, and classroom. The red one is the chapel which is for both monks and people from this area. It is a transition between public and private. The blue part is private, it is a place for monks’ daily life.
Nature is important for monks’ daily life. The top left is a space for welcoming the public. The second one is the green space viewed by the church and classroom. The one under that is the cloister. The last one is the small garden separates the library and the outside.
The first element of the monastery is a thick wall separate the religious and secular. On the west side of the side is an elementary school, so it’s typical that parents pick up and sent their children to school. But inside the thick wall, monks have a religious life to dedicate everything that they do to God. It is a strong contrast between this two lifestyle.
West side of the Monastery provide a space for the neighbors to communicate.
Being private is a goo the spiritual world. B about community. So covered space to sem process from individu ing and studying reli

Separated from all the distractions and being in a closed space could help monks focus on spiritual activities. A narrow and tall space with an opening on the top creates a solitary space.
Monks and people from outside share the same wall and natural elements. The roof slope up for welcoming people to site and communicate, the roof on the inside is a plane so space is more contained and private.

Being connected to nature is very important for monk’s daily life, they not only get inspiration from nature, but they also have a strong relation to agriculture such as brewing ales and making wine. The chapel is facing east so that during morning mass, the morning sunlight will penetrate through the tree leaves and bring light and shadow into the inside. The chapel itself has a similar material pallet as the monastery which is simple and clean.
The chapel is the highest building in the monastery and has a different roof to show the important symbol of the chapel The reaching gesture of the roof emphasizes the strong connection between monks and nature.

Ocean view hotel Santa Monica, Califonia Spring 2018 The main task of the design is to take advantage of the site to bring ocean view to every hotel room on the front and make a comfortable courtyard for rooms at the back. It also gives back to the community by creating a garden-like walk space between the inner city to the ocean.
The site is in Santa Monica, a coastal city west of downtown Los Angeles. Santa Monica has a coastal Mediterranean climate, enjoying an average of 310 days of sunshine a year. The courtyard design fits in perfectly with this climate. It opens up the inside and connects it with the outside. Because the site is a long narrow rectangular shape, it is divided into two parts. The front part has a direct view of the ocean. The part in the back has a courtyard to enjoy.
Courtyard was designed to let inside connected to the ocaen and nature. To have to the view to ocean, the front part is an L shape.

City
The site is on the edge of the city so that people staying in the front part of the hotel can enjoy the ocean view. Because of the special condition of the site, the back part of the hotel has an opportunity to be close to the city. A pleasant pathway connects the front and back courtyard. It also connects the city and the ocean.
The first step of the design is to frame the view of each room, all of the room at the front part has the view of the ocean. All the rooms at the back have a view of the garden courtyard.
A pathway connects the ocean and the city through the garden courtyard and the plaza.
Lobby view to the plaza through angled bearing wall
The bearing wall angled to the ocean so rooms on the ocean side have the view of the ocean. These structure walls frame the ocean for residents. Also, it filtered the western sunlight in the afternoon.
Back garden courtyard look
For the back part of the hotel, rooms looking into a garden courtyard. Utilities such as bathroom and storage designed as service bars to create a bigger and free living space. Also, it becomes a sound barrier in between each room.

Axo drawing of the hotel, showing that rooms face to the open space. All of the service spaces, such as storage and stairs and elevators are on the other side. There’s opening in between each service bar so that the hallway can be lit up by natural daylight. The whole building is narrow so that both sides can get a decent amount of daylight.
Spatially the meeting room is the biggest space so that it can hold events for different purposes. The lobby is the second largest space. On the left side of the lobby is the double-height seating space and a cafe on the mezzanine.

Farming implements museum Manhattan, Kansas Spring 2017
The main idea for this project is to use a structure beam as a lighting device to create beautiful light and shadow. As a farm implements a museum, the ordered beam stand for the efficiency of framing machines to show the beauty of power and utility.
Sketch
The original idea for the natural light. Evenly um space. Natural light is more comfortable fo non-structural beam was placed in between th natural light will be diffused into the museum
Light study model
lit space was the goal of the museor human beings than artificial light. A he structural beams as a light diffuser. So m space.
The museum is separated into two services and served two parts, the green part is a service that contains all the utility rooms, the orange one is the museum that offers a better view to the outside and better natural light.
The Circulation is a simple U-shape, people will see everything only walking oneway. And people would not walk into each other. Truck and cars go to a different entry, so they will not interact with visitors
