Abstract In this project, student are required to reformulating a 9 hole golf course on an eroding landscape in Winnipeg, and link the Canoe Club Golf Course land and its neighbourhoods with intercultural gradens as a pioneer project for a New Garden Urbanism. The project is based on the assumption to bridge the Red River in order to connect the communities and facilities on both sides of the riverbanks. The concrete motive for this study project is the contact established with Heather Eckton who is a Winnipeg based scientist, an educator and an public advocate for the vision "to secure the Canoe Club Golf Course green space for generations to come as an important urban outdoor natural learning space for children and youth in land-based education" (H. Eckton, email cprrespondence 2017). From the Brief by Dietmar Straub 1
Canoe Club Golf Course is a 100-year old city-run golf course located at 50 Dunkirk Dr., St. Vital, Winnipeg. To the west, the Red River and the remnants of a riparian forest form a natural boundary. Common Winnipeg suberban residential developments surround the area in the other three directions. A network of public educational and recreational facilities is situated around the green space like Windsor School, Bonivital Soccer Club or the YWCA of Winnipeg - South Branch. (From the brief)

The red river is a North American river originating at the confluence of Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail rivers between Minnesota and North Dakota. The river flows northward through the Red River Valley, forming the border of Minnesota and North Dakota and continuing into Manitoba, Canada. The river then empties into Lake Winnipeg, whose waters join the Nelson River and ultimately flows into the Hudson Bay. On its trip to lake Winnipeg, the red river falls to a depth of 70 metres. The river is about 885 kilometres long, of which about 635 kilometres are in the United States, while about 255 kilometres are in Canada. Following harsh winters and heavy snow falls in Winnipeg, spring melting and breaking up of the river's ice presents an overwhelming river dynamic. This dynamic has resulted in water level rises that have led to major floods in 1776, 1790, 1809, 1826, 1852, 1950, and 1997. The fluvial dynamic of the river also results in erosion of the river banks. Planting and seeding are permanent erosion control practices that reduce rain drop impact, minimize runoff, and stabilize soils by means of extensive root systems. Despite the effectiveness of the aforementioned erosion controls, $110 million for erosion control seems expensive. Landscape designs can provide cheaper and effective means for erosion control/riverbank stabilization. Through this studio, landscape designs for erosion control would be explored and tested. include permeable blankets/matting, and plant and seeding.

Riprap is a protective layer of rock used to armor areas of bank erosion and scour. Riprap comes in a variety of sizes, from small stones to large boulders. Its angular and irregular shape helps to hold rock in place and resist the force of moving water. The installation of riprap can include the placement of rock both above and below the waterline.

Permeable blankets/matting Erosion control blankets/matting is made from synthetic or natural fiber and used to temporarily protect a slope from raindrop impact and surface runoff. Matting may be synthetic and used for turf reinforcement, or made of jute, straw, paper or coconut fiber and used as a mulch netting to protect seeded areas during the establishment of permanent vegetation.

Edge[scape] The group site analysis and the Canoe Club Golf Course open house hosted by Councillor Brian Mayes, resulted in a group decision to retain the existing 9-hole golf course. Retaining the golf course birthed the "edge scape" concept. The concept focuses on working with the Red river edge of the site, as well as the Dunkirk Dr road edges, and Cunnington Avenue street edge. The group's proposal pays attention to a potential bridge that connects the wild neighbourhood to the Canoe Club golf course. On the river edge of the site, the group’s proposal includes a bridge landing, a limestone beach, a look out area, a blooming pasture, a play/picnic area, and a tree densification of the road edges. The tree densification blocks views of the vehicles on Dunkirk Dr and restores some Oak, Green Ash, Manitoba maple, Cottonwood, and Basswood tree species.

With the community garden, the group aimed at providing individual garden plots for rent. Individuals are responsible for planting and maintaining their own plot. Additionally, a path runs through the river edge of the site as well as the road edges of the site. This path creates a pleasant run/walk in nature as visitors are embedded into the densely treed area on the edges of the site. The proposed tree densification frames the site and embeds visitors within the site as they block views of the vehicular traffic on Dunkirk Dr.

The limestone beach is designed to give visitors direct access to the Red river, while a proposed look out creates an elevated river front view for visitors of the Canoe Club Golf Course. Blooming pasture provides a pleasant colorful natural landscape that contrasts the forested area riparian river edge. With the open class room/play area, the group aimed at creating an important green space for people in the neighbourhood. For example, St. John's Ravenscourt, the Wildwood Park Community Centre, the YMCA, and Windsor school can utilize the space for the benefit of the youth in this area as for due to close proximity to this natural environment.

With the designed limestone beach, the group incorporated limestone on the riverbank of the designated area for the beach. With the placement of the limestone, the muddy and eroded river bank is stabilized and visitors are given a pleasurable access to the Red river. Additionally, the group chose a steel sheet pile material for the design of a "ramstairs" that guides visitors from the golf course and the existing riparian area to the limestone beach. "Ramstairs" consists of sheet piles with a height of 0.45 meters from ground level that allow for pathways and manicured lawns. The paths can be run up and down by kids and accessed through a wheel chair. While, the soft manicured lawn is large enough to occupy children, adults, and the elderly population of the neighbourhood.

C[ ]RVE TO THE WATERFRONT
individual Instructor: Prof. Jean Trottier Winnipeg, MB Fall 2018
Abstract The design studio will explore the currently under-exploited potential of Winnipeg's rivers, in particular for human transport, and, in the process, revisit, expand, and improve the network of river access location. Students are required to work on a small scale: 1200m2. The site can be randomly chosen along the core area of Winnipeg Red River. Students need to work with existing water taxi dock and/or proposed new water taxi dock and new river access. Those locations will be considered not only as components of the public and recreational transportation infrastructure but also as significant footholds and transitions between the city and its rivers in all seasons.

The site of the project located in Exchange district, in front of Mere Hotel, and just beside Alexander Docks. The main design intention was developed in different dimensions. Firstly, a riparian forest was rehabilitated in order to keep the continuity of the riverfront green corridor, reconnect the Stephen Juba Park and Fort Douglas Park. The recovered riparian forest will also serve as a natural filter between the city and the Red River, bring people a new access point to the waterfront, reconnect people with the river not only for functional aspect as a new water taxi dock but also emotionally give people a chance to leave the modernized city and reconnect with nature. Also, as the special feature of the Red River, which actually curves into the landscape, exposed riverbank make the Red River even more special than other rivers around the world. The design intention also aims to emphasize the special feature, give people a chance to touch the soil, smell the soil, observe the ground, look closet to the plant roots and the insects, feel the endless happiness in nature.

Rounded sunken sitting made of timber and corten steel was designed. Each sunken seating will be 700mm sunk into the ground, topography was changed to accommodate the intervention in order to provide better seating experience. In the largest rounded sitting area, bonfire place designed to warm people at night as well a providing different atmosphere from day to night. In the platform area, a curved seating made of timber and corten steel which have the same design elements with the rounded sunken sitting was designed to provide people who waiting for water taxi a place to relax and enjoy the river view. Path with a water taxi dock was designed to serve as a river access point. In order to better accommodate with the existing condition, less influence the strong geometric shape from the existing site (Mere Hotel, Cibo Waterfront Cafe, Alexander docks), the path was designed in organic shape and soft the edge of the river. Together with the recovered riparian forest, try to bring back a more naturalized appearance. As the trail and the platform are made of asphalt, a part of the platform was made of timber to emphasize the riverfront lookout place. Direct view of the Winnipeg landmark, the Human Right Museum can be seen from the site.
Lighting Strategy Plan
During winter seasons, when the night is warm, people can buy wood from the hotel or the cafe for the bonfire and enjoy a lovely warm winter night.
N 4m
Topography was modified to provide people with experience of sunking into the ground. When modifying the contour lines, attention also needs to pay on the accessibility. On the right-hand side of the path, the maximum slope was no more than 8% with a landing area. People with disability are suggested to use this way. However, on the left-hand side, a relatively steep slope was created to provide a different experience from other parts of the path, which might make the path a single way path for people with disability. However, as the right-hand side path is closer to the existing parking lot, a single way path should functioning well for people with disability.
For the lighting strategy, most lights should be ground light with the distance of 5-7m between each. LED lights should install under the seating to illuminate the place at night and keep people feel safe while less influence the forest. Light pollution should not appear in this area.

As recovering the riparian forest is one of the main intentions of the project, plants selection is of great importance. In order to recover the river bottom forest, careful investigation and observation need to be done before choosing any plants. In order to connect the Fort Douglas Park and the Stephen Juba Park, trees species should generally remain the same. Deciduous trees and Everygreens including Manitoba Maple, Scots Pine, Cottonwood, Ohio Buckeye, Poplar species, Laurel Leaf Willow, Silver Maple, Bur Oak, Prairie Horizon Alder, Manchurian Aler were selected. Those trees shall be functioning well together as the river bottom forest. Acting as an effective filter between the city and the river, bring human fresh air and create more habitats for animals. When distributing the trees, the contractor should use cottonwood as anchor tree, installing them first with the distance of 10-15m between each. Then the medium size trees and small trees shall distribute with the space of 5-7m in between depends on the existing site situation. Other than "buffer zone", the entrance of the riverfront path and the area front of Mere Hotel shall create a sense a welcoming atmosphere. Tree assigned to plant in this area shall be small to medium tree, and have certain ornamental value. For example, crabapple was selected based it's showy flower and various leaves colors. Japanese Tree lilac was select based on it's attracting scent that gives away. Russian Olive was selected because of its silverish leaf color throughout the year. Also, shrubs with strong adaptability and with a massive suckering system, such as dogwood; wolf willow; snowberry, were also designed to plant along the river bank to play the role of erosion control and better stabilizing the river bank. As for the rounded sunken seating area, Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass chose to plant around. This reed grass provides wonderful contrast with the corten steel and gives a wonderful year-round experience. Sways gracefully in the lightest breeze was mainly the chosen reason. As the previous site condition of Alexander Docks, the soil around is compacted and contaminated. In order to let the trees grow happy and healthy, soil needs to be replaced for each of the tree roots.

WATERFRONT RENOVATION PROJECT
individual Instructor: Prof.Richard Perron/Ryan Coates Ottawa, ON Winter 2019
Abstract This is a competition organized by the National Capital Commission (NCC) that invites students from cross canada to gather ideas for key riverfront parcels in Canada's Capital Region. The NCC is challenging students to propose ideas that create vibrant, animated, inspiring and accessible public spaces along the Ottawa River shoreline. Participants are asked to focus their ideas on one of two riverfront sites, which are Jacques-Cartier Park South (Ottawa River north shore) or Parkdale Node (Ottawa River south shore).
18
Pedestrian circulation Cross-country ski circulation Cycling circulation
Proposed tunnel circulation
The site I've been working on is Parkdale node which locates in Ottaea River south shore and marks a transition from the urban character toward the more natural setting. It offers beautiful views of the Ottaea River, the Capital corearea and th Gatineau Hills to the northweat. The south and weat of the siye is the Tunney's Pasture which is an ongoing developing federal employment area. As illustrated in the project outline and boticed from the site visit, the biggest challenge of this area is that the parkway become a barrier to safe access to the shoreline, un-protected fro mthe cold winter wind as well as large piece of green space are under-utilized.
The main design intention of the project is working with the existing traffic flows, by carefully considered landform along with strategic placement of vegetation to create comfortable microclimatic patches and places for meaningful experiences. And bring a vibrant atmosphere to riverfront by create connection between the local community and the riparian zone.
Existing traffic circulation
Landform
The design strategy focus on retaining the traffic loop within a constructed tunnel condition, while building up the central circular area through earthworks. Meantime, the mounds create protection from the cold northwest wind and creates diverse outdoor spaces including a meadow garden and children’s playground. Grass is planted on portions of the berm to provide opportunities for casual viewing of the Ottawa river and the city. The site-lines have been opened to the west allowing for a beautiful sunset view of Ottawa.

Grass is planted on portions of the berm to provide opportunities for casual viewing of the Ottawa river and the city. The site-lines have been opened to the west allowing for a beautiful sunset view of Ottawa. A water plaza has been designed in the core area to allow people to be part of a shifting interactive experience (spray, mist, and glassy stillness).
21
Also, the undulation of the landform provides a diverse range of spatial experience (direct sunlight, shade, slight breezes). When entering from the tunny’ pasture side, options have been given to the visitor whether they wanner coming from the stairs or the riser up landform. Trees have been planted on side to block the noise of the traffic while providing shades.
1. Site entrance condition
The tunnel’s surface was designed as an interactive sound space. Circular shaped, coloured glass windows reveal muted rhythmic traffic sounds while providing a better and more interesting light condition within the tunnel itself.

The overall design pays attention to all-season recreational opportunities and allows for a range of experiences for people of all ages. Those two sections show the winter use of the space. During winter, the mounds can be interesting space for cross-country ski and the water plaza will be suitable for skating.
As u can see from the section. By placing the trees and the shrubs from small size to large size, cold wind from northwest can be blocked effectively. Also, the tunnel and the mounds structure together aim to create more comfortable outdoor spaces for people during winter.
