Been colonized
by Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, Tainan grew up with lots of different cultures, which made a complexity about its urban texture. Composed with 5 main roundabouts and the Grand Tainan Canal, Tainan city holds its struct with its alleys and paths casually growing from the old times. With merely 19 millions of people living in 854.917/km2 land, every action taken place here affects a huge amounts of people--especially architecture. How to deal with the city remain my concern in every project. 1

Step 1_ select proportions. Step 2_ Cut & fold. Step 3_ grouping, make units. Step 4_ combine units into clusters.

The most charming part of Tainan is its numerous, unplanned lanes which set up/being set up by the residant’s daily life. Sunlight leaks through low-rise dwelling buildings and enclosures, representing the dynamics of a sundial. Serpentine paths lead to the way home, that every turn is how Tainan residants memorise their hometown. I took Tainan city as origin model, recreating places like alleys/public squares/terraces/enclosures into constructure. Superpose those units to make a vertical growing space. Another thing I tried to represent in this project is the sundial-like lighting changes. I set each cluster one light well, which also enabled plants to grow.

Represent lightness/warm/nature, and give a tranquil sense of smell. The wooden part is structurely seperated from the others, which provides a large span possibility.
The heavy part, contained office/ storage/toilets/elevators and so on. The concret wall becomes a gap between human socialty and buddhist region. concrete

During 2014-2016, I visited more than 100 ruins in Taiwan. As a modern citizen, I have long lost the sensity of existence-- Which ruins expressed purely. Times in here are visible and touchable. This photo was taken at an abandoned Clay-Factory in deep mountain, with the other half of it has already became some part of the local temple. 2016/07
