Just married! Burlap decorations are a big trend for weddings this year, so hang up this bunting to add to your vintage-rustic styling. By Sarah Heys This beautifully simple bunting uses squares of hessian and a pared-down colour palette to create a folksy banner that’s perfect for a laidback wedding theme. The cute bride and groom ladybird at either end of the letters are a sweet touch if you’re nature lovers who might be planning a woodland wedding or an outdoor day! If you’re want something other than hessian, try stitching the lettering on plain or coloured aida or evenweave instead. If you’d like a longer string of flags, add different motifs at the ends, or even try adding some patterned squares and different coloured ribbon. This bunting would make a wonderful hanging above the cake or top table.
YOu will need MEDIUM WEIGHT HESSIAN (11 SQUARES PER IN) THREADS AS SHOWN IN KEY NEEDLE LENGTH OF RIBBON (TO HANG)
HOW TO MAKE THE BUNTING Step 1 Cut approx. 12cm (4¾in) squares from the hessian fabric. Find the centre of your chart and fabric by folding in half in
both directions. Start stitching from this point. Carefully follow the chart and key. Step 2 Trim to 11 x 11cm (4¼ x 4¼in), although this size may differ if you have chosen different count hessian. While cutting, make sure the motif is central and leave 5cm (2in) seam allowance at the top. Step 3 Fray the side and bottom edges of the hessian squares by removing one or two strands around the edges using the tip of a needle to separate the strands. Step 4 To string the flags together you can either use a length of matching or contrast ribbon, or make your own cord by twisting two pieces of the thread that you used to stitch the design together. Step 5 Turn over the top edge encasing the cord and, using running stitch, sew along the top 1cm (¼in) from the edge.

Printing onto good quality paper will give you a better finish. Choose an area of text that includes the words ‘love’, ‘cherish’ or ‘adore’. Favourite song lyrics or text from a much-loved book would also work well.

Ethereal hair vines are such simple, understated bridal accessories and will really come into their own for summer weddings. The pretty combination of wire and beads creates a delicate headdress that can be worn with or without a veil. The twisting technique used to make the vine has three levels of difficulty so if you’re a beginner, then just add beads and pearls as single strands or learn the more advanced, three-leaf motif to create the fabulous design you see here. To make adding the beads as easy as possible, buy your seed beads by the hank and ivory pearls in strings. Once you’ve mastered your own hair vine you can experiment with variations to make them for your bridesmaids too, and of course you can try all sorts of different beads too – just remember that they need to be small and light! HOW TO MAKE THE STAR Step 1 Cut two 2m (2Ÿyd) lengths of 0.4mm gold-plated wire. Pick up 216 seed beads onto one length of wire. It’s easier to string beads straight from a hank, feeding the wire through the beads alongside the carrier thread. Alternatively, you can pick up by hand or use a bead spinner. Step 2 On the second length of goldplated wire pick up alternate 4mm and 3mm pearls, adding a single large pearl and then three small pearls. Repeat eight times. Twist the ends of each wire into a small loop to prevent the beads falling off. Step 3 Hold the two wires together with all beads on the right-hand side and with the 4mm pearls to the left of the smaller pearls. *Twist both wires together for about 1cm

You’ll find that you’ll make neater twists if you hold the wires as a ‘v’ shape while twisting. Step 4 Drop the first 4mm pearl down towards the twisted wire. Fold the wire down each side of the pearl to make a 1cm (½in) stem. Hold the pearl and twist until the stem is twisted all the way down to the main vine. Twist the two wires together again for 1cm (½in). Step 5 This time bring three 3mm pearls down towards the main vine. Fold the wire
to make a group of three pearls and a 1cm (½in) stem. Twist, holding the pearls to make the stem. Twist both wires together for 1cm (½in) again, finishing with the seed bead wire on top. Step 6 Drop nine seed beads down towards the main vine. Fold the wire over so the seed beads are evenly around the bend and the untwisted stem is 1cm (½in). Cross the wire tail over about 0.5cm (Ÿin) from the main vine. Twist to make a leaf shape, only twisting the wire together for 0.5cm (Ÿin) below the leaf.

Step 7 Drop another nine seed beads towards the first leaf. Fold the wire over so that the seed beads are evenly around the bend and the untwisted stem is about 0.5cm (¼in). Twist to make a leaf shape and short stem. Make a second leaf shape. Step 8 Repeat step 7 to make a third leaf with a short stem and then hold all three leaves and twist to twist the short main stem down to the vine. Repeat from * (in Step 3) until you have eight groups of leaves with pearl stems in between. Turn the wires around and pick up 189 seed beads on one wire. Step 9 Pick up the pearls on the other wire, beginning with three 3mm pearls and a 4mm pearl. Repeat six times. Make a second length of vine in the same way. Hold the vines together so that the groups of leaves are staggered and twist together. Step 10 Arrange the leaves so that they are flat out at each side and the pearls are standing up randomly down the middle. Fold the tails over at each end and twist leaving a loop for the ribbon. Trim all wire ends and add a 1m (1yd) length of ribbon to each loop to finish.

If you’re a crafty bride, then this gorgeous sash will be right up your street! It’s a beautifully stylish way to customise a hand-sewn wedding dress, or a plain one bought from the high street. Dorothy shows you how to make two types of flowers from organza and satin ribbons – a simple twisted rose, softened with tulle, plus stunning Kanzashi flowers made using a Japanese folding technique. The textures of flowers made from organza and satin ribbons look quite different and give you lots of opportunity to make each design unique. As well as making one for yourself, you could also sew sashes in complementary shades for your bridesmaids or flower girls.
HOW MAKE THE CORSAGE SASH Step 1 To make the roses, cut 50cm (19¾in) lengths of cream satin ribbon and tulle. Tie the two different ribbons together with an overhand knot. Cut two 4.5cm (1¾in) circles of felt and snip a small hole in the middle. Tuck the tail of the knot into the hole. Step 2 Twist the two ribbons together, wrapping them around and around to create the rose shape. Stitch the ribbons down as you go (alternatively, you could use a hot glue gun). Secure the ends of the ribbon on the reverse side. Make a second rose. Step 3 To make the Kanzashi flowers, cut the 5cm (2in) wide grey satin ribbon into 14

squares measuring 5cm (2in) each. Thread the needle and tie a knot in the end. Fold one square in half diagonally. Fold each of the side points down to the bottom point. Step 4 Fold the side points under, one at a time, so that the points touch at the back. Now fold the folded ribbon in half to trap these little triangles inside on the reverse. Step 5 Use the needle and thread to stitch through the layers and the back just above the raw edges, and then stitch across to the front and secure with a couple of stitches. Repeat to make seven petals in total. Step 6 Trim each petal across just below the stitching. Sew through each petal in the middle near the stitching and pull up into a circle to make a flower. To stabilise the flower sew around on the reverse side further out, then sew in the ends. Make a second grey satin flower in the same way. Step 7 Cut 27 squares of grey organza ribbon measuring 4cm (1½in). Make the
organza ribbon petals in the same way as the grey satin ribbon flowers making nine petals for each flower. Make three Kanzashi flowers. You may want to apply iron-on interfacing to the ribbon sash length at this stage.

HOW TO MAKE THE INVITATIONS Step 1 Print your wording on the white linen paper and cut down to size. The sizes should be as follows: • Guest information: 21cm high x 10.5cm wide with ‘Guest information’ printed at the bottom

Step 3 Place the guest information wording on top of the white card. Put the invitation panel on top and then lay the watercolour paper over all three sheets. Line up the top edges of all four pieces so that you can see the titles of the guest information panel and invitation panel showing below the watercolour paper. Step 4 Use your hole punch to punch two holes at the top of the invitation, about 1cm from the top and 2.5cm in from each side. Use your eyelet setter to secure an eyelet in each hole. Step 5 Cut off about 40cm of hemp cord. Starting at the back, keeping about 5cm of cord in your hand, thread one end through the eyelet. Thread back through the other eyelet so that it’s at the back of the card again. Repeat this two more times so that you have three lines of cord running across the front of the card. Carefully tie a double knot at the back of the card and cut off any loose ends. Step 6 Cut off a piece of hemp cord about 15-20cm long. It’s useful if you cut it at an angle so that the cord has a pointy end. Take your heart button and thread one end of the cord through one of the holes; thread the other end of the cord through the other hole. Tie a neat bow in the front of the wooden heart. Step 7 Trim the loose ends of the bow so that you have a nice neat bow sitting on top of your heart. Use your hot melt glue gun to carefully glue the wooden heart in to place on top of the hemp cord at the top centre of your invitation.

HOW TO MAKE THE FAVOUR BOX Step 1 Assemble your blank favour box and fill it with the items of your choice. Put the lid on and you’re ready to go. Step 2 Measure your box and cut a piece of paper that’s about 1cm larger than double the width and long enough to wrap all the way around your box. (If you choose to use one of Imagine DIY’s favour boxes you will need to cut a section of paper about 13x21cm, but you’ll need to take your own measurements for any other boxes or items that you’d like to use.)
Step 3 Place your box face down in the centre of the paper. Run a line of tape along one edge of the paper and wrap it around until it covers the box and the paper is stuck together along one edge. Step 4 Turn the box to one of the sides that’s currently open. Pull the bottom of the paper up towards the top of the box and hold it in place. Fold in each side of the paper until it touches the box. Make a crease along the paper so that you have a point that can be folded down and stuck in to place. Repeat this process on the other open end. Step 5 Cut off about 1m of hemp cord. Starting at the back, holding the middle of the cord, wrap both ends around and around the box four or five times, each time crossing it at the top and bottom. Pass the loose ends back to the top of the box. Step 6 Cut the loose ends of the hemp cord at an angle so that it has a slightly pointy end that will easily thread through the wooden button. Take your folk heart button and thread the top end of the cord through the top hole of the button. Take the bottom end of the cord and thread it through the bottom hole. Tie a neat bow in the front of the wooden heart. Trim the loose ends of the bow so that you have a nice neat bow sitting on top of your heart. Step 8 Using your computer, set up your wording so that it prints in a booklet format onto A4 sheets. Once you’ve printed it, use your paper trimmer to trim about 0.5cm off each edge of the paper. This will help it fit inside the cover neatly. Step 9 Once you’ve printed out the order of service sheets and cut them down, you can use a long arm stapler to secure them in place. Alternatively, you can punch holes in the crease and hand tie them in place using hemp cord.

facing, and sew around the two sides of the triangle, leaving the top edge open. Repeat until all flags are sewn. Step 3 Trim off the excess seam allowance and snip across the bottom point to make turning easier. Turn the flags right sides out and press. Step 4 Fold the bias binding in half along the length, and press, creating a channel to
pin in the flags. Pin the flags at 3.5cm (1½in) intervals. Sew in place and press. Sew a length of ribbon to either end of the bias binding for hanging.

Add touches of vintage magic to your wedding space with these simple-tomake tealights that will dazzle your guests. They make such beautiful table decorations and can be personalised with a special scent. If you’re making a lot, it might be worth a small investment in a double boiler and don’t forget to ask friends and family if they have any old teacups hidden away – hairline cracks or minor chips are fine! You might find a selection on eBay, or build a collection from carboot sales and charity shops. After the day, refill with wax and give as sweet gifts, or recreate that romantic warm glow at Warmly home, just the two of you.

Step 5 Pour a small amount of wax into the bottom of the teacup and pop the wick tab into it, making sure it’s upright and central in the bottom of the cup. This fixes the tab in place. Once this small amount of wax has dried (this usually takes about 15 minutes), pull the wick upright, being careful not to pull too hard and dislodge it.

HOW TO MAKE THE WRIST CORSAGE Step 1 Roughly cut out four circles of fabric measuring 10cm (4in) in diameter. Continue to cut out rough circles of fabric lace and hessian in different colours and textures, in slightly smaller sizes until you have around 18 layers of circles going from large to small. The last small circle should be approximately 3cm (1½in) in diameter. Step 2 Now take a circle of fabric made of synthetic fibres and hold it down with a long metal object such as a pair of scissors or long tweezers. Use the heat tool to gently heat the fabric in places to lift and crinkle it. Don’t stay in one place for too long or it will create holes in the petals. Step 3 Continue with all of the synthetic layers. Now take a natural fibre circle and scrunch up and roll it between the palms of your hands, quite vigorously, until the edges are frayed and the fabric is crinkled and scruffy looking.

Throwing confetti on the happy couple is an Italian tradition that has become a firm fixture at weddings, and these music-themed cones are a lovely way of presenting it to guests. If you plan to throw confetti after the ceremony, we advise checking with your venue first to make sure that it allows it, as not all do. If this card-type of confetti isn’t permitted, then you can fill your cones with rose petals instead, or forgo throwing it and sprinkle it over the tables. HOW TO MAKE THE CONFETTI CONES Step 1 Source a copyright-free image of sheet music. A lot of vintage sheet music is now free from copyright as well as being free to download, but check any permissions carefully. Ours was sourced from www.thegraphicsfairy.com. Step 2 Using a graphics programme on your computer such as InDesign or Photoshop, or free downloadable software such as PicMonkey, darken the image with the Colours settings to age it, and scale the image to make it fit a sheet of A4 card.

Step 3 Print the image onto both sides of the card. Trim any white edges. Wrap the card diagonally to create a cone and stick the edges in place. Step 4 To make the confetti, print the music pattern onto both sides of a piece of card. Punch tiny hearts from the sheet music and red cards. Place the confetti in cellophane bags and tuck a bag inside each cone.
Top tip! Source punches in different shapes so you can have a selection of confetti. Stars and lowers will work really well.

Step 2 Stir the granulated sugar and salt together in a bowl. Place the egg whites in the clean bowl of a freestanding mixer. Whisk the egg whites on a low to medium speed until frothy. Still whisking, gradually add the sugar and salt by the teaspoonful. Beat until soft peaks form, then increase the speed of the mixer to high, and whisk the mixture until it is very shiny and stiff peaks form. Add a few drops of food colouring and beat briefly mix it in.

Step 3 Take a third of the almond/sugar mix and fold into the egg whites using a rubber spatula. Fold in the remaining dry ingredients. Maintain the gentle folding motion until the mixture falls off the spatula in a thick ribbon. As soon as it reaches this stage, the mix is ready.
MAKES: 15 MACARONS

Step 4 Use a little of the macaron mix to stick each corner of the parchment to the baking sheet. Spoon the macaron mix into a piping bag fitted with a round tip, 7mm wide. Pipe circles onto the parchment. Step 5 Set the macarons aside until they are no longer sticky to the touch (about 30
minutes). Meanwhile, pre-heat the oven to 170°C, 150°C Fan, Gas Mark 3 and put a shelf near the bottom of the oven, and one near the top. Place an empty baking sheet on the top shelf to prevent the macarons from over-browning. Step 6 Place the macarons on the lower shelf in the oven and bake for around 18 minutes, until they have risen and have a frilly foot. Remove from the oven and leave them to cool. Step 7 To make the buttercream, beat the butter until very soft. Gradually incorporate the icing sugar, then add the milk, orange blossom water and food colouring and beat for a few minutes until very fluffy and pale. For the chocolateorange buttercream, melt the chocolate and leave it to cool before incorporating it into the buttercream. Step 8 Spoon the buttercream into a piping bag with a large round tip. Pipe small amounts of filling between pairs of macaron shells (one chocolate and one orange) and sandwich together. The macarons will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

You can serve these delicious jellies in flutes as pictured or give your sweet treats a vintage twist by putting them in mismatched teacups. The secret to keeping the bubbles is to give the mixture a quick whisk before you pour it into the glasses.

Set the pan over a low heat to dissolve the sugar, bring to the boil, simmer for 30 seconds, then remove from the heat. Cool at room temperature for 1 hour to allow the mint to infuse with the syrup.

Step 2 Add 100 ml of water and set the pan over a low heat to dissolve the sugar. Bring to the boil, reduce to a gentle simmer and continue to cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and leave the infusion to cool and infuse at room temperature for at least 2 hours. Step 3 Soak the gelatin leaves in a large bowl of cold water for 10 minutes until they are softened. Step 4 Strain the lime and mint infusion through a fine mesh sieve into a clean pan. Bring back to the boil, then immediately remove from the heat. Squeeze out any excess water from the gelatin and add to the hot syrup. Stir until melted and smooth. Step 5 Carefully open the bottle of Prosecco. Pour the gelatin mixture into the large measuring jug and very slowly, pouring down the inside of the jug, add one-quarter of the Prosecco. Mix to combine, then slowly (to prevent it fizzing up) add the remaining Prosecco.
Step 8 Soak the gelatin leaves in a bowl of cold water for 10 minutes until softened. Bring the syrup back to the boil, remove from the heat, strain into a clean jug and make the liquid up to 200 ml with extra water.
Step 9 Squeeze out any excess water from the gelatin and add to the hot syrup. Stir until melted. Leave to cool completely or stand the jug in a bowl of ice-cold water and, using a bar mixer or hand whisk, beat the syrup furiously until it cools and foams up into clouds of minty lime bubbles. Step 10 Spoon a little foam on top of each jelly and return to the fridge to set for about 1 hour before serving.

HOW TO MAKE THE BLACK FOREST FANCIES Step 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/ Gas Mark 4. Step 2 Cream the butter with the caster sugar and soft light brown sugars in a stand mixer for 3 to 4 minutes until pale and light. Scrape down the bowl with a rubber spatula and gradually add the beaten eggs, mixing well between each addition. Add the vanilla extract and mix again until the mixture is well combined. Step 3 Sift in the flour, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder, and add the salt. Mix the cocoa powder with 3 to 4 tablespoons of boiling water, then add to the mixture with the milk, and beat until smooth. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake pan and spread level with the back of a spoon. Step 4 Bake on the middle shelf of the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Cool in the pan, then turn out of the pan, peel off the baking parchment, turn the cake the right way up and leave to cool completely on a wire rack. Step 5 To prepare the vanilla and Kirsch buttercream, beat the butter until very soft, pale and light. Gradually add the icing sugar, mixing well between each addition and when it has all been incorporated add the Kirsch and the vanilla bean paste. Mix well again. Step 6 Using a serrated knife, slice the rounded top off the cake to give it a totally flat and smooth top, then cut the cake in

half horizontally. Carefully lift the top half of the cake off and set aside. Using a palette knife, spread half of the buttercream in a smooth layer on the bottom cake layer. Top the buttercream with half of the cherry jam and replace the top cake layer. Gently press together, then spread the remaining cherry jam on top. Step 7 Lightly dust the work surface with icing sugar and roll out the marzipan to a 20cm square. Carefully lift over the cake, covering the jam. Using the serrated knife trim the edges of the cake, then cut the sponge into 16 squares. Step 8 Spoon the remaining buttercream into one of the piping bags and carefully pipe a small mound of buttercream on top of each square. Step 9 To make the chocolate fondant, sift the fondant icing sugar and cocoa powder into a mixing bowl, and whisking constantly, add enough water to make an icing that coats the back of a spoon. Step 10 Taking one square cake at a time, spear it onto a large fork and spoon the fondant over the top and sides of the cake allowing any excess to drip back into the bowl. Gently tap the fork on the sides of the bowl to allow any excess icing to run down the sides, then carefully slide the cake off the fork onto a wire rack set over a sheet of baking parchment. Repeat with the remaining cakes, then leave them to dry for around 1 hour. Step 11 Drizzle the melted white chocolate over the cakes and leave them to set before serving to your guests.

Handmade paper flowers are enjoying the limelight right now and these showstopping crepe roses are perfect for styling all-out romantic, natureinspired weddings. They’re sure to wow your guests, plus they’re a real joy to make as florist crepe paper has lots of body that holds its shape well, perfect for forming the rose petals. We adore the girly pink shades, but if this doesn’t fit your wedding theme, just pick a different colour, vamp it up with black flowers, or dye white crepe yourself and embellish how you want. To make one on-trend oversized rose, just enlarge our template. HOW MAKE THE BOUQUET Step 1 Using the template on page 125, trim all petals and leaves. Use a pink ombre paper for the petals, and shades of green for the leaves. Step 2 Stretch the centres of the petal shapes to form cups. Step 3 Bend the tip of a wire down 25mm.
Step 4 Wrap the smallest petal around the wire and glue it into place. Step 5 Glue the other small deep pink petals around the centre. Step 6 Next, glue the next five petals around the bud. Step 7 Glue the next six petals around the base of the flower. Step 8 Glue the final six pale pink petals onto the stem. Step 9 Gently pull the top edges of the petals to ruffle the edges. Step 10 Glue the green base (forming the calyx and sepals) around the wire. Step 11 Starting at the base of the calyx, wrap the florist tape around the wire stem for about 25mm. Step 12 Add two leaves into the florist tape wrap, as shown in the photograph.

Step 13 Cover the wire with florist tape and arrange the leaves. Step 14 For extra leaf stems, glue two leaves at the top of the wire. Wrap with florist tape and add the third leaf. Step 15 Ensure all the stem is covered with florist tape. And you’re done! Repeat all the steps until you’ve made enough roses for a beautiful bouquet. Enlarge or decrease our template to make roses of differing sizes to get a glorious, natural effect.

Combining the soft, pink-tipped flower heads of hydrangea with three roses in complementary shades is a match made in floral heaven! This heart-shaped hanging is super easy to make, and you can easily have one finished in an afternoon, even if you’re new to floristry. We think it would look gorgeous when hung over the ceremony table, so there’s a heart above you as you say your vows. You could also craft several and use them to adorn the ceremony or reception space. HOW TO MAKE THE HYDRANGEA HEART Step 1 Give your hydrangeas a really good drink. Soak the Oasis heart by dropping it into a sink or bucket of water and allow it to absorb the water for around 10 mins or so. Do not push the Oasis into the water as this will create air pockets inside the material and prevent some stems from getting water. Step 2 Remove the Oasis from the water and round off the edges by rubbing gently or trimming with a sharp knife. Attach a loop of ribbon to the reverse of the Oasis heart using a couple of moss pins.

Step 4 First create a border of hydrangea around the edge of the heart, by simply pushing each clump firmly into the Oasis. Next add a line of hydrangea across the middle of the heart and down the centre, effectively splitting the heart into quarters.
Now fill in each quarter of the heart with more hydrangea, placing the clumps close together to give it a really full look. Continue until the heart is filled with hydrangea and the green Oasis is completely hidden. Step 5 Trim three pink roses so their stems are around 2.5cm (1in) long. Push them into the Oasis in a cluster in the top left side of the heart as shown, to finish.

Turn heads in this utterly romantic, nature-inspired lace crown, made by milliner Ann-Marie Faulkner in conjunction with Most Curious Wedding Fair. Choose lace with big floral motifs that are easy to cut out, then all you need are some basic sewing skills to create this wonderfully lightweight accessory, perfect for a bridal starlet on her special day! As the headpiece is too beautiful to keep hidden away after the wedding, you could still carry this off at your next bash – just dye it or add some embellishments to give it a refresh. HOW MAKE THE HEADBAND Step 1 Pick out your lace. We used guipure lace because of its bold pattern, but you could also use corded lace – just make sure it’s heavy enough to cut out and hold its shape well. Step 2 Cut out your chosen part or parts of the lace pattern using small embroidery scissors. You can choose the size and shape you wish.
Step 3 Mix up your fabric stiffener according to the pack instructions. Step 4 Lay your cut-out lace on a piece of plastic or paper and, using your paintbrush, generously apply the stiffener to the lace. Step 5 Leave the stiffener to dry as per the pack instructions. Step 6 Once dry, give the lace a quick iron on the reverse to further stiffen the fabric edge only, using whipstitch and matching natural white thread. Step 7 Arrange the lace on the alice band. Hold in place using pins and remember to check how it looks on yourself in the mirror. Keep adjusting the lace pieces until you’re happy with the arrangement, then pin. Step 8 Once you’re happy, sew into place using matching thread, making sure to keep your stitches really small and almost invisible for a professional finish. Step 9 Now let’s add some beading.

Scatter a few small bugle beads over some of the lace, highlighting elements as you wish, and stitch into place. Step 10 As our motif is floral, we decided to add some beaded stamens – to do this, secure your thread in the centre of a flower then sew through the middle of a long bugle bead. Step 11 Take a seed bead and sew through the centre. Now go back down through the centre of the long bugle bead and back through your fabric. Make sure your thread is pulled all the way through securely. The seed bead will hold your thread in place as well as holding your bugle bead up vertically. Repeat all over your lace, or in selected areas, until you have a finish you’re happy with. Step 12 Carefully check your piece over for any loose threads or untidy pieces of lace and trim anything that needs neatening up. Wrap your beautifully crafted headpiece in tissue paper to protect it until your big day.

If you want to secure it, pop a little glue at the back or another glue dot. Step 3 Fill with your favourite summer flowers from your garden or local florist. Mix up different blooms or go for a single oversized one in a jar on its own. Step 4 Gathering several jars together makes a statement display on your table or mantelpiece. Don’t forget to keep the flowers fresh by trimming the stems and changing the water before the big day.

HOW TO MAKE THE IVORY FLOWER Step 1 Take two different types of fabric in the same colour, and using the flower templates on page 125 cut a total of four large flower shapes and four small flower shapes for your corsage. Step 2 Lay the two large flower shapes in the same fabric on top of one another alternating the angle so there are no gaps. Step 3 Next lay the two remaining large flowers in different fabric on top of one another, again alternating the angle so there are no gaps. Step 4 Lay all four smaller flower shapes on top of the large shapes in the same way. Hold all layers together with a pin. Sew a circle in running stitch in the centre of the flower, going through all layers.

MAKING UP THE HAIR CLIP Step 1 Using a hot glue gun, glue the vintage-style pearl beads to the centre of the flower, being careful not to overload on glue. Make sure you use a range of sizes to add to the eclectic vintage style. Step 2 Cut 18cm (7in) of 2.5cm (1in) wide blue ribbon and lay it in an upside down ‘V’ shape. Using some vintagestyle lace, cut a leaf shape, again arrange ribbon and lace together to create a leaf shape with ribbon at the back. When you’re happy with the shape sew it to the centre back of the flower.

Step 5 To give the flower more shape, use very small dots of hot glue, in areas that

Bake for approx. 25 minutes, or until the sponges are risen and spring back when touched. Cool in tins for 5 minutes, transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely. Step 3 Repeat with remaining ingredients,

Step 5 To assemble the cakes, trim the sponges to approx. 1.5cm (½in) deep. Use a 5cm (2in) round cutter to cut out seven circles from each sponge. Take a circle of the palest sponge and place it cut-side down on a chopping board. Pipe a swirl of buttercream on the surface facing you, then top that with a circle of the secondpalest sponge, cut-side down. Continue, with two darker sponges. The bottom-side of the darkest sponge should now be on top. Pipe a small amount of buttercream onto it to help it stick to the jar. Take a metal spatula, slide it under the cake, place the jar over the top and flip it over. If the cake is off-centre, use a metal skewer to push it to the middle. Top the cake with a swirl of buttercream and screw on the lid. Tie a wooden disposable fork to the jar using bakers twine. Repeat for all cakes.
Top tip! Instead of using them as favours, these bakes in a jar could double up as place tags and pudding – just add a label to the twine.

Chinese fortune cookies are a fun way to get tables talking, and making your own will not only produce delicious vanilla biscuits, but also the chance to write personal fortunes for each guest! Or how about titles for charades?

HOW TO MAKE THE FORTUNE COOKIE Step 1 Preheat the oven to 170°C, 150°C fan, Gas Mark 3. Line a baking tray with the silicone mat. Write fortunes on pieces of paper about 6 x 1cm (2½ x ½in), or download and print them from the internet. Step 2 Sift the flour and cornflour into a large bowl then add the sugar and salt and mix well. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the oil, egg whites, water and vanilla and almond extracts. Place scant tablespoons of the mixture onto the silicone mat and use the back of the spoon to spread the mixture into 10cm (4in) circles. Leave space between each cookie as they will spread a little during cooking. You will get about

four cookies onto the baking tray so will have to cook them in batches. Bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes, until the outer edge of each cookie has turned a light golden brown colour. Step 3 Remove from the oven and, working quickly while the cookies are still pliable, fold them as follows: place a fortune in the centre of the cookie and fold the cookie in half over it. Next, gently fold the cookie in half again by pulling the two corners of the semicircle together. Step 4 Place the cookie in an egg cup or shot glass, with the two corners you just folded together facing downwards. Leave to set while you bake the next batch of cookies. If any of the cookies cool too much and become too brittle to fold, place them
back in the oven for 1-2 minutes until they become pliable again. Step 5 Once the cookies have set, you can decorate them with the melted chocolate mixture. Hold the cookie by placing your thumb and forefinger either side of the central fold, then drizzle the back of the cookie with chocolate. Place the decorated cookies in the fridge for a couple of minutes to set the chocolate. Leave overnight or package straight away in recycled jars topped with craft tape, or ribboned boxes.

If you’re looking for a fun favour idea, these sweet tarts make the perfect loved-up bake. With flaky, buttery pastry filled with oozing cherry centres, they’re guaranteed to be a winner! HOW TO MAKE THE CHERRY PIE POPS Step 1 To make the pastry, put the flour in a large bowl and rub the butter into it using your fingertips. Once the mixture has reached the consistency of coarse breadcrumbs, add in the lemon zest, egg yolk and enough cold water (about 4-5 tbsp) to create a dough. Knead the dough briefly, wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for at least an hour or overnight. Step 2 To make the filling, drain the cherries (reserve the juice) and place them

These simple yet effective lanterns will instantly add atmosphere to your venue, whether they’re strung up across a marquee or clustered on a table. The sky’s the limit when it comes to the design you use – you could make a monogram of your initials, pick out a motif from your invitations or keep it simple with geometric shapes. Just add a battery-operated tealight or real candle to complete. Cool beans! Step 1 Remove the label and any blobs of glue from the can. Pack the can with sand, top up with water, and freeze overnight. Step 2 Draw your design on a piece of paper to fit the size of the can. Tape in place. If you’re drawing your own design, ensure that the gap between holes is at least as large as the diameter of each hole. Step 3 Place the can on the sandbag. Punch holes in the can. Place the can in the freezer for about 30 minutes after each 10 minutes of work to ensure the can remains solid. If you’re making several lanterns, work on them in rotation.
Step 4 Once your design is complete, punch a pair of holes opposite each other 1cm (3/8in) below the top of the can for fitting the handle. Remove the sand. Step 5 Cut a piece of coat hanger wire slightly longer than the final handle size. Use ring-bending pliers to make a tight curve in the middle of the length of coat hanger wire. Use your hands to bend the ends into gentle downward curves. Put to one side. Step 6 Fill the can with newspaper and spray-paint it evenly. Make sure you work in a well-ventilated area or outside. Step 7 When the can is dry, bend the wire ends of the handles at right angles and trim these to about 3mm (¹/8in) with a small pair of bolt cutters. Squeeze the handle to

compress it slightly, then fit the ends into the holes in the can – the handle should hold in place by natural spring action.

The sight of it is enough to turn your thoughts towards a party, so what better way to get your guests as excited as you are about your special day than with this oh-so jolly wedding stationery? We’ve chosen complementary papers from the range available at Imagine DIY. However, bunting is so versatile you can mix and match any offcuts that you have to hand. Choose particular patterns and textures to suit your wedding theme or give each guest their own unique invitation, using papers that you know they’ll love. HOW TO MAKE THE ORDER OF SERVICE Step 1 Cut a piece of matt white card measuring 14.5 x 29cm (5¾ x 11½in). Score and fold in half. Step 2 Use your alphabet stamps to stamp ‘order of service’ on to the top right of the card. To get the feel of how much pressure and ink to use with your stamp, practise on some scrap paper before you start.
Step 8 Use double-sided tape to stick your wording inside the order of service cover. If you have lots of wording (more than will fit onto the two inside pages of the card), print it on to matt white paper, cut it down to size and use a long arm stapler to secure it inside the cover to give a professional finish.

HOW TO MAKE THE FAVOUR BOX Step 1 Assemble your favour box, making it yourself, or them in bulk. Step 2 Take your offcuts of paper and cut bunting-shaped triangles that will fit on to the lid of your box. As before, you can make a template from card so your triangles are the same size. The top of the bunting shape should be smaller than the two sides. For our favour box, we used the following dimensions for our triangles: 2cm (¾in) across the top and 2.5cm (1in) for each side. However, depending on the size of your box and lid, you may need to adjust the size accordingly. Step 3 Once you’ve cut enough triangles, stick them in place along the top of the box lid using double-sided tape. Make sure each side has a line of bunting (at least three on each side). There, it’s as easy as that! Why not get your friends involved to help make more of these sweet stationery sets? You’ll have them done in no time!

Set the scene for your wedding feast with this magnificent tealight table centre. Let your imagination run riot with how to dress it – pretty coloured glasswear, votives, flowers and shells will all look fabulous. Or, go all-out kitsch with retro figurines, found curios or ornaments from your childhood! Position your tealights randomly as we have, or in a straight line if you prefer.

HOW TO MAKE THE WOODEN TEALIGHT TABLE CENTRE Step 1 Tidy up your piece of wood by sawing the ends straight and sanding down any rough areas. Keep in mind whether you want a rustic look or a neat finish to decide how much you should neaten it. Step 2 Arrange tealights along the length of one side of the piece of wood. You can easily do this by eye, but if you like to be precise then measure the distance between each tealight. HOW TO MAKE THE INVITATION Step 1 Print your wording on to the matt white paper and cut to size. The finished size should be 12.5cm wide x 17.5cm high (5 x 7in). Keep the wording set in the top half of the page with the bottom half left blank – this is for your flowers. (You should be able to print two invitation panels on each sheet if you use a landscape format).

Step 5 Peel off various sized self-adhesive pearls and stick them in the centre of each flower. To add a lovely finishing touch, scatter a few of the pearls around the flowers. You can also use sequins, gems or any other sparkly embellishments that you have to hand. Your gorgeous invitation is now finished!

Step 7 Use your glue gun to stick the large pink flower to the top left of the card (you only need to put glue in the centre). Stick the turquoise flower on top and finish with the small plum flower. Add a self-adhesive lilac pearl to the centre. Step 8 Carefully lift up the bottom right of the pink flower (the part that isn’t stuck down). Fold the loose edges of the strip carefully around to the back of the menu and use double-sided tape to stick it together. Remember to glue the strip so that it forms a wrap but take care not to stick this on to the actual menu or you won’t be able to remove it. Step 5 Use your Sizzix machine and die to make the following flowers: 1 large flower in plum, 2 medium flowers in turquoise, 2 small flowers in cerise and one small flower in plum. As before, you can cut the card into squares slightly larger than the shape of each flower to maximise the amount you can get from each sheet. Step 6 Use your glue gun to stick the large plum flower to the top left of the wrap (you only need to put glue in the centre of the flower). Stick the turquoise flower on top and finish with the small cerise flower. Add a self-adhesive lilac pearl to the centre. Step 7 Tuck your medium turquoise flower slightly under the bottom right of the large plum flower to create an overlapping effect. Give your wedding an instant fiesta feel with a collection of blooming desert plants in super-colourful tin cans. They’ll look stunning when grouped together as a centrepiece on each table, as well as being great to decorate other areas of the venue such as the cake table and gift area. These little plants can also double up as quirky favours for guests to take away as a fun memento of your special day. Step 1 Make sure you clean the tin cans thoroughly before using. Drill some drainage holes in the bottom of each can with an electric drill. You can wrap masking tape around the handle to prevent the drill slipping in your hands.
Step 2 Add a layer of drainage material, such as hydroleca or gravel, to the bottom of each can. Good drainage is vital so that the roots don’t sit in water and rot. Step 3 Mix up a free-draining gritty compost from John Innes No. 2 and horticultural grit in 3:1 proportions. Remove plants from their pots and gently break up the root ball, teasing out the roots and removing soil. Take care not to damage the roots. Step 4 Place plants on a layer of compost and then fill in around the root ball, working in the compost with a dibber to reduce air pockets. Tap the container on the work surface to distribute the compost evenly. Top with a layer of decorative gravel. Place on a saucer or similar if you need to protect the table surface. Step 5 After the wedding, repot the plants into large containers when roots start to show through the tin’s drainage hole. Repotting is best done in spring, and
watering plants a couple of days before keeps roots moist. Cacti and succulents need a sunny site and warmth to thrive. You can leave them outside in summer, as long as there is adequate protection and shelter from rain. Bring them inside during the colder winter months and place on a sunny windowsill in a warm room. The easiest way to water these plants is to place the tins in a shallow container of water, leave until the surface of the compost is moist, then lift out and leave to drain. Water regularly in the growing season – every 10 days or so – and add a diluted liquid feed to the water during spring and summer. It’s best not to feed or water the plants in autumn and winter.

A colourful wedding needs a vibrant pudding, so complete your wedding breakfast with these yummy trifles where a flurry of freeze-dried strawberries adds a pop of colour. They taste as good as they look, too, combining a strawberry and redcurrant compote with a topping of crushed amaretti biscuits and alcohol-infused crème pâtissière.
Step 4 To make the caramelized almonds, tip the caster sugar into a small, nonstick frying pan, add the flaked almonds and cook over a low–medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar has caramelised and the almonds are golden. Tip onto a sheet of baking parchment and leave to cool and harden.
Step 2 To make the sherry crème pâtissière, heat the milk with the vanilla pod in a small pan set over a low heat. Bring slowly just to the boil, then remove from the heat and leave to infuse for 15 minutes. Meanwhile beat the egg yolks with the caster sugar and cornflour until pale and light. Reheat the milk until just below boiling, then, whisking constantly, pour into the bowl with the egg mixture. Continue mixing until smooth, then return to the pan.
Step 7 Spoon the remaining whipped cream into the piping bag fitted with the star nozzle and pipe swirls on top. Top with the caramelised almonds and a dusting of freeze-dried strawberry powder to serve.

Get the celebrations off to a fun start with an explosion of sparkly confetti. Forget pastels and ivory, think a rainbow of colours and even neon! Play around with papers you have to hand – try packaging and magazines, too.
HOW TO MAKE THE CONFETTI POP Step 1 Decide which colours work better together by placing them in cupcake tins. Step 2 Here’s an easy way to make your own confetti. Take the same shimmery plastic ribbon used to tie balloons (from party supply shops) and cut into miniature squares using scissors. Step 3 Cut strips lengthwise from coloured paper. You can use a pair of fringe scissors to make it easier. Then cut the paper strips vertically along the fringe. Cut them as wide as you’d like to make smaller squares or longer, rectangular-shaped pieces. This makes wonderful confetti with supplies you may already have in your craft room. Use as many colours as you’d like. Step 4 Using a paper punch helps cut more shapes in a shorter amount of time. Pick
different shapes to create unique confetti – we used a polka dot circle and pretty gold shimmery paper. Remember that the papers don’t need to be the same texture, colour or thickness. Step 5 Now it’s time to fill up your push pop. Pack it in for extra fun! Step 6 Decorate the push pop with a paper punch and an embellishment using a glue dot. You can even personalise them if you have a themed wedding. Have fun!

How to cross stitch
BEGINNERS START HERE...
It’s so easy to cross stitch – just follow these simple steps to make the bunting project on page 10.
WHERE TO START The dotted central lines on the chart should be matched with the centre of your fabric. Fold your fabric in half and then into quarters. Where the fold lines cross is where you start stitching.
READING THE CHART The charts are charted on a squared black and white grid. Each coloured square and symbol represents a different thread colour.
THE KEY All symbols that appear on the chart are listed in the key with their corresponding thread code alongside it. The key also tells you the different stitches used in the design.
COLOUR MATCH In the key (below), the closest column of thread codes listed next to the chart symbols is always the thread brand used in the cross stitch design. Similar colour matches are listed alongside it.
GETTING STARTED
CROSS STITCH
The loop method is the neatest way to start stitching, but can only be done with an even number of strands. Cut a 40cm (16in) thread length, then fold one strand in half. Thread the needle with the ends, forming a loop, and bring the needle up through the fabric. As you take it back down, pass it through the loop and pull irmly to secure.

You’ll need to make a whole cross stitch for each coloured square on the chart. Bring the needle up at the bottom left corner of a square and down at the top right corner. This is called a half cross stitch. Bring the needle up again at the bottom right corner and back down at the top left to inish off the whole cross stitch.

Backstitch is shown by a coloured line and is added to stitching to create detail. Work the backstitch over individual blocks on aida, or pairs of threads on evenweave. Bring the needle up through the fabric at 1 and take it down at 2, up at 3 and so on, so that you are working back on yourself.
Once you’ve inished stitching, inish off your threads by running your needle through the back of several stitches that you’ve already completed. Snip off the ends neatly with a sharp pair of embroidery scissors, as close to your fabric as possible.

CHAIN STITCH (CH) Use this stitch to make your foundation chain

Hold the hook in your right hand, and both the yarn end and the working yarn in your left hand. Move the hook under and over the yarn to wrap it around anti-clockwise.

Pull the hook towards the slip knot, catching the yarn in the hook, and pulling it through the slip knot loop. This forms your irst chain (ch) stitch. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to form a chain.

This is what your row of chains will look like. Hold the chain with your left hand near the hook, to keep the tension. Keep going until you have the number of chains stated on your pattern.

Each chain or loop counts as one stitch. Never count your first slip knot or the loop on the hook (called the working loop). So that you can be accurate, make sure the chain is not twisted and that the front is facing you.
DOUBLE CROCHET (DC) One of the key stitches in crochet, doubles are simple, compact stitches that form a dense fabric

To make a double crochet stitch, insert the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch on the previous row.

Wind the yarn around the hook (yrh).

Pull the yarn through the stitch, giving you two loops on your crochet hook.

HALF TREBLE CROCHET (HTR) A stitch that’s between double and treble crochet in size

To make a half treble crochet stitch, work to where you want the htr and then wind the yarn round the hook (yrh).

Insert the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch in the previous row. Wrap yarn around the hook again (yrh).

Pull the yarn through the stitch only (3 loops on hook).

Yarn round hook again, pull the yarn through all 3 loops. You’ve made a half treble crochet. Continue working htr into next and following sts to the end of the row.
TREBLE CROCHET (TR) One of the most popular stitches in crochet, this simple stitch is twice as high as a double crochet stitch

To work a treble crochet, start by winding yrh and then insert the hook under the top two loops of the stitch on the previous row.

Wrap the yarn around the hook (yrh), and pull the yarn through the stitch only.

You will now have 3 loops on the hook. Yrh again, and draw the yarn through the irst 2 loops on the hook.
